I dreaded contesting against IBB -Jonathan

The Tribune Online
Written by Dipo Laleye,
Minna: Thursday, 24 February 2011.

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan, on Wednesday confessed that he became “very weak” when he thought he would contest the presidential primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida.

Jonathan, who made the confession during his presidential campaign in Minna, the Niger State capital, said he became weak because “General Babangida is like a father to me.”

“Babangida is like a father to me, even in my days as a deputy governor and later as governor of Bayelsa State, I used to consult him. So when it came to the option that I might contest with him, I was very weak, but God knows why and God interpreted it and we never contested the primary,” Jonathan said.

President Jonathan expressed gratitude to the former military president “for congratulating me when I emerged as the standard-bearer of the PDP at the end of the primary” and said General Babangida was absent at the rally on Wednesday because “he had to travel out of the country.”

The president also commended the courage of General Abdulsalami Abubakar for handing over to a democratically elected government in the country within the shortest time possible and despite the pressure mounted on him to extend his tenure.

“We remain grateful to the people of Niger State for giving us a son that has made history in Africa, a son that had the opportunity to continue in office for at least four more years and nobody in the world would have stopped him, if he had come up with a transition programme that would last another four years,” the president said.

Jonathan, who recalled that in 2007 during the presidential rally in Niger State that he stood in for the late President Umaru Yar’Adua, who was in Katsina State for the burial of the Emir of Daura, said he was also alone in Minna for a similar event on Wednesday, because, as the ‘senior,’ he asked the vice-president to preside over the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council in Abuja.

“Now I have no excuse. I am in charge. When I addressed the rally in 2007, I was the second in command, now I am in charge. So anything I say I must do it. I will have no reason to give anybody excuses.”
The president said his administration would not discriminate against anybody, either on account of tribe or religion, adding that “we will run an open government.”

He maintained that for Nigeria to change and be among the comity of industrialised nations of the world, “we must create wealth,” saying this would be achieved by stabilising the country’s energy sector and revolutionising agriculture.

“We must work hard to create wealth because if we do not in the next few years, we will create a huge population of destitutes in the country.”

Earlier, the Niger State governor, Dr Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, had said that the state had put the PDP presidential primary behind it and that those still nursing the wound of the primary were bad losers.
He described President Jonathan as a “man of sense and justice,” assuring him that the state would vote for the Jonathan /Sambo ticket.

Other speakers at the rally were the acting national chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Haliru Bello Mohammed, the Minister of Agriculture, Professor Sheikh Abdallah, former governor of Kano State, Aminu Isa Kontagora, among others.

PoliticsJonathan Plans To 'bribe' Opponents With National Awards! by Pataki(op): 9:25am On Feb 23, 2011
Saharareporters has learned that Goodluck Jonathan has told associates he plans to include some of his high-profile political opponents in the roster of recipients of national honors for 2011 as a way of neutralizing the opposition.

“President Jonathan wants to use the award of national honors to secure the support of dissenting members of his fractious party,” said one source. In pursuit of this goal, Mr. Jonathan has instructed the minister of special duties to forward a list of "worthy Nigerians" to be endowed with national honors before the end of March.

A directive from the presidency, which was seen by Saharareporters, asked the minister of special duties to expedite the process of granting national awards to ensure that Mr. Jonathan can bestow the honors by the end of March 2011.

The directive was issued to enable Jonathan to use the discredited national awards to woo some of his adversaries. “The president is especially interested in using the instrument of national honors to pacify prominent Northern political elders with whom he has engaged in negotiation in recent days,” said a source close to Jonathan and the deal.

Our source said some of Jonathan’s northern advisors had proposed that he use the bestowal of national awards as part of his bargaining chips with disaffected party opponents.

In recent days, some of Jonathan’s aides have accused Abubakar Atiku, who lost to Mr. Jonathan in a contentious party primary, of grandstanding. They claimed that Mr. Atiku was asking Jonathan for oil concessions before he can fully declare support for him.

A senior campaign staffer to Jonathan said the president was panicked over recently released voter's registration figures which show that the northwest section of Nigeria, where Muhammad Buhari (rtd), is extremely popular, and the southwest, where the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) party holds sway, have the largest number of registered voters.

A political analyst said Mr. Jonathan “can only count on carrying some south-south and southeastern states.” The analyst noted that Mr. Jonathan’s popularity in the south south, which has approximately 8 million registered voters, is undercut by his poor electoral prospects in Edo State, which has 2 million voters. In addition, the analyst said that Mr. Jonathan remains unpopular in parts of Rivers State.

Where are the better roads? Where is the greater security? - Can you decide as a person today to live in Jos because Jonathan has provided greater security? Greater security and yet we witnessed loss of 20 lives with Jonathan's campaign election in Port-Harcourt. Greater security and yet murders undertaken within PDP 12 years of mal-administration cannot be explained or solved. Where is the electricity - please kindly tell me.

Do we want to talk about lawlessness in Nigeria under Jonathan's administration - look no further than Ogun State House of Assembly, OBJ/Olurin doing their own governorship campaign - OGD/GNI doing their own separately. I desire for a corrupt free Nigeria. I desire for a Nigeria, where the Nigeria policeman once again carries respect, honor and value. Where a policeman is not ridiculed and aims to shoot at fellows citizen just because he cannot get his twenty naira. Buhari/Bakare have the sheer discipline, tenacity, vision and passion for restoring the glory of Nigeria to where it should have been!

I desire a Nigeria where all people are accountable for their actions. No more of senseless murders that the PDP government have caused. Harry Marshall, Bola Ige, all come to my mind easily. Even the recent Port-Harcourt stampede, no one has been made accountable for it.

In my State, Ibikunle Amosun is contesting for Governorship position, he is a muslim. I will gladly vote for him. Does that equally bother on me having ethnic and religious undertones? Get it straight dude - anything PDP is a DISASTER! 12 years of sheer malady, frustration, murders, anger, corruption, wanton looting of the national treasury, irresponsible house of assembly leaders is enough. 12 years of promising power supply, good roads, good education, safety of lives and property. Most pple haven't a clue, they just want to replace one corrupt government with another one.
If you ask me PAT UTOMI, is the only politician I have ever heard making sence, he talks in terms of real development I can relate to,
not free busses, free health care, few tarred roads here and there, free education, buying trash cans, all cosmetic rubbish

Reasonable leaders should state strategies that would lead to real depth in the manufacturing sector, strategies to achieve structured urban development vis a vis electrical power distribution, intelligent talk,
I repeat that I have not heard any of the major contestants talk this way, except for Pat Utomi, but he doesn't have the grass roots support across the country and cannot win now, even in a free and fair election.

So what is the essence of shouting GEJ down when you are not proposing betterhuh
Before I begin, I kindly implore you to honor me in your next post here with evidential facts as to Buhari being a JIHADIST.

In a realist and ideal world, Pat Utomi might be ideal. But in the present Nigerian dispensation, we want someone who would be dogmatic, bold and fearless. None other fits that shoe except Buhari at the moment.

Pat Utomi preaches what I call: ''cosmetic politics''. So much of fanciful talks, but we all know corruption would not allow his ideas see the light of the day.

In my honest opinion, I want someone who will give power to the people. Have a sense of discipline. Enable people to invest in their ideas, give Nigerians a reason to think outside the box of corruption and government positions as a means of living comfortably. Someone who has tasted power and yet, has no corruption charges leveled against him or his Vice. A man who has been at the helm of affairs and certainly knows what it means to fight down corruption. No other person than Buhari. I am tired of saying the same thing over and over again here; that Nigeria has corrupt leaders. Jonathan is no different, even though I initially thought he was different.

I am tired of a Jonathan and the PDP of twelve years. A PDP that has shown time and time again, they are only there for their pockets. I live abroad, my flatmate is from NigerDelta, one of his brothers is a current Minister under this Jonathan's administration. When I discussed about the death of Nigerians recently at Port Harcourt with him; his response was ''people must die'' while he was laughing. I weep for Nigerians, because his opinion expresses a microcosm to the kind of mindset of leaders we have in Nigeria and we have had in Nigeria under PDP.

It is easy for presidential contestants to deliver fanciful speeches about what and what programs they would implement once they get into power. However, my bone of contention with Nigeria presently is CORRUPTION. This monster is destroying Nigeria, and the only person sane enough to attack this and set Nigeria right presently is Buhari.

Once again, if you have any evidence to Buhari leading or sponsoring any Jihad war, please tender it. Afterall, the IBBs and Dokpesi linked with the October 1 bomb blast are now part of Jonathan's campaign train.

I await your response.

That's dictatorship?
A bigoted and myopic masterpiece, I personally consider it as.

MY ARGUMENT:
I can choose to view WOLE SOYINKA (the author of that write-up), as a cultist who has contributed immensely to the high cultism and student killings in the Nigerian tertiary institutions of today, OR I can view him as a man who is an activist, an intellect with a nobel laureate award to show for it. Which would you prefer I hold of him? Therefore, if a Chinua Achebe arises today, and writes a ''masterpiece'' on Wole Soyinka and his young juvenile misguided cult days, should I then judge him (Soyinka) based on the article? Or I rather consider his exemplary lifestyle which makes him fit for leadership as at when needed. Please let us be objective once in a while!

So also I view Buhari. A man who shows with his exemplary lifestyle that he is above the debacle of corruption entrenched with our leaders in Nigeria even from his youthful days! A Buhari who does not regard one religion as superior to another. A Buhari who is NOT a JIHADIST, a Buhari who carries the burden of the nation at heart, a Buhari who is a DEMOCRAT!

Why must their gathering always be in Ibadan or Ogun State? How I wish by May 2011, these idiots and thieves are not only sentenced to long term jail, but openly flogged in public once a month while serving their jail terms.

Nigerians VOTE and kick out these tribalistic buffoons in the April elections!

Nigeria should have advanced beyond this tomfo000olery being spewed and read on the internet.
