That is because the objective of marriage as it is meant to be, has been defeated.
Marriage was meant to be the union of a male and female coming together to become one, and become a creator. You become bonded in flesh and in spirit.
You become one spirit in two vessels.

What we have this days is civil union, because marriage is far deeper than what is going on this days.
I agree with you.
Thank you for the explanation. smiley

Where I like in this post is where it was said when kids show up, they take up their father's name. This settles the dust
Exactly my view too.
I will not really care much if my wife takes up my surname. I will not object if she chose to answer her father's name only.
My main contest will be for my Children to bear my Surname only. They are free to fill their mother's maiden name when asked in a form.

The world is Patriarchal.

When it gets to the stage that children have to bear both their parents name; then their will be no need for ceremonious marriages as we have it today. What will be obtainable is for two people to come together to procreate and co-parent their offspring.

Still I often feel the concept of Marriage is unnecessarily overrated and over-demanded for... I think it serves no other purpose than to maintain the prevailing social structure.

Procreation, fertilisation, and reproduction occurs when a viable sperm meets a fertile egg.. it has nothing to do with ceremonies or legal agreement or traditional binding.

Am open to better expose though.

Nice one...she is working sha...a homecare worker, earns 41k usd. She works 2 jobs (same type of job, different agencies) and sometimes strech to 24 hours non stop working ( sometimes 48 hours). She says she needs a working man to help pay bills so she wont have to work long hours. She also says i can remain in middle east until paper is sorted so i can be able to work. (Is that possible?)
Me really no mind marry her for real. Naija matter weak me. As far as i live and work legally in u.s and working towards citizenship, i no too mind who i come home to everyday (as far as she isnt violent or sick). Macron's wife is 24 yrs older than him and she no even fit give Macron any kids. So a high flying guy like him cant even leave his legacies to kids cos of who he marry.

If u ask me to choose btw living in nigeria and marrying a sexy Nigerian girl my age for d rest of my life or living in u.s and marrying an older fat lady for d rest of my life....i will choose the later

However am open to advice and suggestions smiley
Brother I just had to comment so as to pitch my observation and advice to you.
I have been reading your comments and I want to believe that I understand you very well.
However, I feel you have unknowingly made up your mind already... and will cite any case that supports your decision to marry the lady.
I want to humbly suggest that you take another look at the whole marriage thing you are planning to have with her. I feel you should not get yourself entangled with this particular lady.
Although you want to get permanent resident and possibly US citizenship, I believe the option of falling in love with this lady and then marrying her is not the best pathway for your goal.
Please calm down and think it through.

Pls advise me. I had a terrible GRE Score on verbal, 136,and with my current financial capacity i can only rewrite the GRE or register for TOEFL.

My course requirement favours Quants score more than verbal. I.e Finance and Economics. I also had 3.5 in AWA.

Your candid advise is appreciated. Thanjs
Bro 136 verbal is really very low.
That's about 4 percentile. And verbal score is not easy to Increase even after a retake. Increments is hardly more than 5 points.
Well, for you to get upto 3.5 in AW, I feel you may have made so many mistakes during the verbal test, which is common. And you may have prepared with inadequate materials for verbal.

I think you should rewrite the GRE, but give yourself more time to prepare. Maybe you can write first week February. However, this will affect your Fall 2018 target as you will miss many deadlines.

It is hard to suggest what to do exactly.
You can contact the program coordinator of your course and seek his or her opinion.

Pls house,
I need schools in the US with january deadline that offer funding for Chem Engr. PhD or MS. I dont think I can meet the December 15th deadline of most schools. My GRE is next Thursday and I'm yet to write TOEFL.
My UG CGPA is 4.83/5 (ChE).
Your GPA is so high...
Do your best in your coming GRE.
You can use this weekend to browse the internet extensively to search for schools.
You can use www.usnews.com or www.4icu.org to search for schools in USA state by state. Taking into account the program requirements, application fee, deadline, faculty research interests...
Is important you do this search this weekend so you can shortlist atleast four schools you will send your GRE scores to immediately after the test.
If you have additional money, is good you register for TOEFL too.

Great!!
Thank you for the swift reply, Much appreciated.
I studied Geography and Regional Planning in the University of Lagos Right now I'm on a 2.92 but my 2nd semester results although not been released has been very good, over 3.0 is a guarantee (Class 2017 as aforementioned )
About the schools i sent my scores too, i honestly have no interest in them i just copied from people i met at the centre, thats why i want to start anew
Syracuse
Mary Washington
Baylor university
Rice university
Honestly , I'm one bad procrastinator as I've skipped writing the Gre 3 times this year, until my sister just got angry and paid (I only had to do it because i no wan waste her 50K )
Now, i plan on applying for masters in Geographic information systems, population, transport or geography related courses. i believe i have a chance to apply to new schools but i'm of the notion that I cant get a full ride of at least an assistantship because My people at home cant afford it.
This is all me with a new beginning...
I just saw someone write about auburn, for me any good school is okay, im not so witty to be picky.
Finally, i apologise for my long post.. im not really a gragarious fellow so my writ says my mind.
Awaiting your reply, thank you.
Cool
I know some people that finished from your faculty. URP is a nice course.
I think you have done very well already. The schools listed above are great choices and you are free to add more as long as your pocket can carry the application fees and other fees such as ets score report fees.
What you need to do now is to check if these schools have your desired course GIS, check their individual department requirements and application deadline. It may also be good for you to contact some of the faculty (lecturers) that share same research interest with you, ask for opportunity to work in their group. Also contact contact the program coordinators as well; make your enquiries from them.
Note: by contacting I mean you should send them e-mail, and if after two days they have not replied your e-mail, find their number on their page and call them one by one and make reference to the e-mail you sent them.
Also if your sister have some more money to throw your way, try to write TOEFL as well. This is a more simpler test that you can prepare within two weeks and perform excellently well in it. Also if you are writing the TOEFL, DO your best to score 26 and above in the speaking part while you also maintain a score of nothing less than 25 in the other sections ( reading, listening, writing). You can download free baron and ets TOEFL software online.
Do your best to finish all these before End of December.. also note that the application process will require you to get recommendations letter from your lecturers.

You can ask more questions on whatever you do not understand.

hello People, good day to y'all ...
Although I've been reading this thread and following religiously for a while, i just registered for it today (I'm still unfamiliar with its usage)
I have a few questions to ask, better still i need your input even if my questions seem banal.
I just graduated from unilag about 2 weeks ago and wrote the gre last week..
My scores were not so good, as i wasn't really entrenched in my studies as i was still working on my project.
I got a 315 , Quant 158 Verbal 157 (i plan on writing another exam in january, i didn't really read for this one i guess scores were fortuitous )
My questions are:
1. I graduated with a Gpa of 2.96 (terrible i know), but what are my chances, if any, of getting a scholarship..
2. I applied to random schools on that day, because the test was paid for by my Sister a week before without my prior knowledge and I didn't really Check it proper , what schools can i now apply to?
3. As I have no chance of getting my transcript till early February , do i still have a chance of applying for 2018
4. Please I'm in need of a mentor if possible to put me through, i may sound Ingenious, but please help my cause..
Waiting on your auspicious responses, God bless
You have nice scores.
I think myself and others here will like to guide you but you have to provide more information about you.
Like the course you studied, schools you sent your GRE scores to, the course you want to study in graduate school.
Also you really don't have to wait till February before you get your transcript.
In short, you can get admission with what you have at the moment.
Answer the questions above and people here will guide you.

Ok, let me give back to the community who has given me so much info. After barely a month of preparation with interruptions by job interviews ( plus films wey I watch till early this morning),I wrote my GRE today in Abuja after I had to postpone it once(see how money miss angry angry).I had to leave my house early as I did not know the venue and it was worth it because I miss road but later arrived at the venue few minutes to 10. I was still unsettled and I was a little worn out, but man must survive. Inspired by God and threatened by paying another 50k I took the test. The analytical tried to show me pepper but I said even if na to form story I must write something.God really answered my prayer as Quantitative was the next section that means , my test took this pattern QVQVQ.By the break I needed water because I was really thirsty and I also took that opportunity to discuss small. But the break taught me that 10 minutes is really a short period of time. After the break, I started with rigour but later noticed I was flagging, I was getting slower, started to use the onscreen calculator and didn't have time to revise. At the end of the test I just wanted the whole exercise to stop (maybe because I didn't practice a full length test with the power prep software).
However my result came out thus
AWA- waiting
Verbal- 157
Quantitative-166
I was unhappy and disappointed and I feel I messed up because I expected more(when MIT is drawing you wetin you go do na), however in all things I give thanks. But one thing I learnt is to prepare better
I had to change schools like MIT and introduce plan B schools like;
University of Texas Austin
Texas A and M university
University of Notre Dame
Colorado School of Mines ( na confusion make me add this one)
My profile goes thus;
School: One big school like that for eastern Nigeria
Discipline: Mechanical Engineering
Target: msc/PhD
CGPA: 4.53
Now let the writing of Statement of Purpose begin , I can not come and be going at the same time
Please your advice will be appreciated by me and I trust God to take us there in Jesus NameM

Congratulations bro. Great scores you have got.
And your quant is quite high. I love it.
Success in your applications..
Please what did you do or study specifically for the quantitative part?

The rumors about his Igbo origins are quite strong. It is often said that thousands of Igbo kids were adopted and flown out of Nigeria during the Biafran war and majority of them never came back. Here is what this person had to say about him:

His middle name, ondimba, may have an Igbo meaning if it is truly Igbo, who knows.

Could actually mean "Foreigners" if loosely translated in Igbo (using my Igbo dialect though)

MY GRE EXPERIENCE

I told myself that whether or not the result is a 'good' result. I must give an account of my experience. I must say, initially there was this feeling of 'my story is not inspiring , why share?'

I got to the venue quite early, like 45 minutes before the scheduled time. You get checked in as soon as you are ready and so you may start earlier than your scheduled time just like it happened to many of us. i Planned to got to the venue with banana, nuts, snacks and energy drink grin grin but only ended going with lucoz.. and that was enough. Although, i noticed my verbal section was getting ready to start probably because i didn't choose to go for 10 min break. it is important to take everything said on this platform seriously.

it was VQVQV. it really was not important spotting which of the sections is the experimental. the first quantitative was a roller coaster. Second quantitative however, was not joy all through. i got stuck with the DI, could not interpret the table. I lost my composure and had to guess 3 questions, that was a very bad thing to do and that i thought was my greatest undoing. The problem was pacing, and not creating enough time for the later part. I got complacent, not very mindful of my pace and i got punished.
Verbal on the other hand - during Prep i discovered late that my RC improved and the nuances in TC was a latent problem. especially three blanks types. I used to get like half of the total number of TC questions. Therefore I was not expecting so much from verbal, just hoping to be lucky. grin shocked

Prospective test takers should be methodical in their preparations. you must be able to track your progress, have a separate note from the one you work and scribble on. After that taking a full length practice test, a thorough review must be done make sure the problems are addressed.i did not do all that, not because i did not want to but because of work schedule. i get home tired everyday.

LASTLY, IT IS BETTER TO KNOW THE CODE OF THE INSTITUTIONS YOU MAY WANT TO SEND YOUR SCORES TO, I ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM WHEN I SAW UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE AND not UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE, KNOXVILLE, BEARING IN MIND THERE IS UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE CHATANOOGA and other ones. AT LEAST you may not have to pay for that should you apply to that school later.

In the end, it was V:154 Q157 i saw after reporting the scores. BELOW MY EXPECTATION REALLY BUT ALL PRAISE STILL BELONG TO THE ALMIGHTY. I WILL TRY APPLICATIONS WITH THIS AND I AM QUITE HOPEFUL.

PROFILE:
GPA: 4.35/5.00 (3.62/4.00 WES EQUIVALENT)

5 YEARS PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE.

MS/PHD- ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

MASDAR INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, ABU DHABI
COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY FT COLLINS
UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE
SIUE

I SINCERELY HOPE THE GRE WILL BE DEEMED GOOD ENOUGH TO MERIT FULL FUNDING.

NOTE:PLEASE IF YOU HAVE BENEFITED FROM THIS THREAD IN ONE WAY OR THE OTHER, THE LEAST YOU CAN DO TO GIVE BACK IS SHARING YOUR EXPERIENCE. YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE.

Congratulations bro..
Great scores...

athorello:
So I took the GRE 28th of last month here in PH.
Results summary:
Verbal: 157
Quant: 160
AWA: 4

Shockingly, I scored exactly 317 on my second powerprep test 3 days to my test date. I was only able to increase my score by 7 points from my first diagnostic test. Anyway, it was only God who helped me pull through because after totally breaking down for two weeks and getting better two weeks to test date, I discovered that I've lost some things. I just couldn't answer some question types like inferences and logic. Hmm! Including mixing up some subtle maths concepts. OK... What did I do? I gave up on relearning anything. I made a decision to work on my speed and tested that with the 2nd powerprep test. In the end, I scored 156 in verbal and 161 in Quant. While reviewing, I found out that most of my first gueses that I changed in the verbal were actually right (but I always have the challenge and fell for three trap in the actual test). In the quant I got all 20 questions right in the first session and 15/20 in the 2nd.
I had a funny run down to the test.

But my advice...
1. Please try as much as possible to eat something (my first mistake)
2. Take any medication you have to take for any challenge or pains (I went with my drugs but couldn't take them cos of doctor's warning not to take the medication without food)
3. Get as much water (I had finished 2 sachet and almost 1 Eva bottle before check in. Had to beg them to let me go outside the gate to get more water)
4. Pray it doesn't rain all day... Lol
5. Try to be as fast as possible. I was able to go through and review all my verbal answers with speed. I had 3 quant sessions. In two of them, I had 5 and 3 mins left respectively to review my responses and I was sure of not failing more than 1-2 questions per session. For one of the quant sessions, my time expired just before I will submit the answer to number 20 so no time to even review the questions I marked.
Finally, village people almost entered the hall but God pass them. I was noticeably the only one with challenges. Back pains and general body weakness that I'll always rest flat on the desk every second I had to rest before and during the test. My system froze like 4 times during my last two quant sessions. The system was restarted, I was logged back on and the next time it will freeze the screen displayed an Error message so they had to assign a new system.
But when I saw my final scores I was just laughing and smiling. God pass them.

Anyway....

My head hurts. No, I am not thinking about the present situation of the country, the recent NNPC scandal, the fact that we have not had light for days, I have just written my GRE exam. After months of on and off and off and on and off and off and off and off and on preparations, I can now call myself GREat. Lol.
Having finally written the GRE, I feel I'm in a position to advise potential test takers. It goes without saying that in order to obtain high scores, one needs to practise. Take as many practice tests as you can and keep working on improving your scores. Infact, the practice tests are coterminous with the actual exams. My experience today proved that. In addition to preparing for the exam, you should also be preparing yourself mentally. You should be googling stuff like "how to keep your brain active for four hours", "How to detect the experimental section in the GRE exam", "How to read 600 word Reading comprehension passages in 2 -3 minutes".
I did not have as adequate a preparation as I had wished. Work was so demanding and I couldn't find the time. Still, I studied whenever I could; on commutes to work reading articles from Aldaily, using the magoosh vocab app, memorising words from a list I had earlier created on quizlet (Studying GRE PRACTICE on Quizlet: https://quizlet.com/202373358/gre-practice-flash-cards/ ) - this was especially helpful as associating words with pictures ensured I remembered them. For the quant, I watched the magoosh videos and skimmed through the Manhattan sets.
Serious preparations however began 2 weeks ago. I digested the whole ETS guide in one weekend and took the practice tests (158Q, 154V). No other material can substitute the ETS official guide in my opinion. That same weekend I took the powerprep and had (158,152) and I was like hay God! Is this my destiny? I hurriedly went through the Manhattan 5lb for quant and princeton review for verbal. In hindsight, I regret the haphazard manner with which i read the Manhattan 5lb. It is another great resource to ensure a good quant score. Took the second powerprep and the free crunchprep test yesterday and was averaging Q162, V158. Na so I close shop. What else could mans do? I was just hoping that ginger go enter my body today which would cause my scores to miraculously shoot up. Lol.
Got to the center and was shown my desk. It was when I sat down that I realised I had not brought any snack. No water. Nothing. And Nairaland people advised me. How could you forget son? It was gonna be a long four hours. I got the VQVQV format. The first Verbal Section no be here o. I was tempted to walkout and go and pick masters form at Unilag. The 2 quant sections on the other hand were not bad at all. I was able to answer most if not all of the questions correctly , at least from my own perspective. Lol. The remaining verbal sections were fair. I did not encounter any strange words. The bulk of my time however was spent trying to decipher those arcane and convoluted RC passages. My advise, tackle the TCs and the SEs first, then the paragraph arguments before dealing with the RCs. That way, you are left with enough time to deal with the RCs.
Reported my scores and was not surprised. I was just hoping for more. Sent to my preselected four schools and left the building to go find food and water.

Profile:
CGPA: 3.64/4.00 (WES unofficial score)
GRE Score: 321
Quant: 163
Verbal: 158
AW: Check back in 2 weeks.
Applying for MS Electrical Engineering. #fall2018

This thread really helped a lot and it's only fair that i repay by giving an account of my GRE experience so that prospective test takers may glean from it one or two stuff like I did from reading others' experiences on here. I don't think I would be rewriting the exam. I don't think I can subject myself to that amount of mental drudgery again. Schools will have to accept me with that score whether they like it or not. Lol

Congratulations bro...
You did great.

That's interesting. I just glanced at my own evaluation from 4 years ago and it was not included. I guess they have started including the SIWES nowadays. Even my undergraduate university does not include SIWES in our CGPA calculation.

My own evaluation is from 2 years ago.
I guess it didn't appear in your report because your undergraduate school does not include SIWES in CGPA calculation.
Probably WES only calculates CGPA with the courses the originating school uses...
It may interest you to know also that GST courses was not included in my CGPA calculation both in my undergraduate school transcript and WES report. GST courses are graded Pass or Fail in my school, and that was how it appeared in my WES report.

One other thing I forgot to mention earlier is to not include your IT (SIWES Industrial training) in your GPA calculation. Due to its heavy units (as high as 10 units in some universities), WES does not include it in their GPA calculation. So if you did, take it out and recalculate again.

PS: to others evaluating their transcripts themselves, please exclude your IT/SIWES from your GPA calculation. WES does not include it in their official evaluation, so that you get an accurate GPA after calculation.

Boss In my WES evaluation report.. SIWES as well as Project were included. 6 and 4 units respectively.

One, No school would give you an admit for fall to begin in spring. Two, the scholarship is not binding on Spring and would still be available for fall if I do not use it now.

Fall 2018 resumption is somewhere between 10 to 11 months away. Not that I cannot spare the time but sometimes the euphoria of getting something that feels unlimited like the PTDF could make one lose sight of what truly matters in the grand scheme of things.

So let us say I stall and get into UTAustin in fall 2018, will the concomitant benefits of getting into UT Austin escape someone else who went to Arlington? I doubt it.

I know 2 graduands from both schools working in Chevron who got in about the same time. I know someone else who went to Cornell and Austin who had to come back to Nigeria before securing an IOC job. Sometimes one has to weigh the expected benefit with the time sacrifice that might go into it.

And the schools I am still looking out for are not as unequally yoked as I did with Austin and Arlington above. University of Maryland, College Park for example has thesis-based option for MS chemical engineering and I think Delaware has too. Those are definite top 20 schools for my program and are great fits without being MIT, Berkeley or CALTECH (that are need blind schools for my discipline anyways).

Need blind meaning, they don't care to see if you have the money to pay before admitting you. If you don't have the profile they are looking for, they would simply say no PTDF or not. A true story is of the 4.96 Unilag guy who had between GRE 320-325 GRE and was fully funded by GAtech and Austin yet MIT and one of the schools I mentioned above gave him a cool...fat...regret mail.

Thanks for the congratulatory message.

Bro I understand you very well, and I am confident that you will make the best choice. Surely excellence is truly yours.

It blows my mind that just one person could be this adept and dextrous with this much brilliance and intelligence.

The way You and dremanuel approach and analyse things here is on another level.

Please when the heat is over, I will really love you two to review, critique and correct my SOP., I already have a draft.
Tried Fall 2016, but got flat rejects from all five schools.
Would love to have a go at it again.

Thanks for your contributions so far in this thread... May the almighty continue to smoothen your paths.

Since I became addicted to masturbation I'm no longer desperate for sex and I stopped begging gals for sex. Result I'm happier and less stressed. Even better being single I always have money and can afford to treat myself nice.
The funny thing is when I started to tell gals to f*ck off they started being interested in me. Lol. I can't take shit from a gal when I self-service to gals that are 100 times hotter than her. NO WAYS.
I'm happy and never fear of getting aids.
Women hate it when men love porn coz porn like prostitutes and sluts all make sex lose value and take control from women. For women to rule the world men must always hunger for them.when they stop women know they have a big problem. That's Y even women who will never give u sex will diss and shame u for masturbation. She wants u hungry for sex so she will use that hunger to friendzone u and get stuff from u while denying u sex. Its the reason why women hate it when another woman is too easy to sleep with. She is cheapening the product between her legs.
My Nigga grin cheesy

I have really been busy and I would still be... till the 15th atleast. I am grateful for all the congratulatory messages and I would endeavour to respond to each and everyone of them in due time.

Kakashi12, I responded to your message. Check the email you used to register on NL as I have responded twice even.

I would respond to the rest of the enquiries here when I am chanced.

DreManuel is right; most heavies do not have Spring admission for my course of choice so I am scouring the net trying to find good schools, for MS Chemical Engineering (Thesis-based option), with reasonable deadlines (most are September 15-30 undecided).

So far I have found 4. I would have to get everything done in record time whilst still travelling to Abuja (12th-13th) for the Induction and getting documents signed etc. It is not easy but it is worth it.

Like I said; I would be myself by the 15th. Please bear with me.

PS; Fall of next year is too far for me.
Boss Congratulations. Am so happy for you.

Please if the scholarship will still be viable by FALL 2018, I would advise you to target it.
Unless the scholarship condition is that you must use it before February next year.
But even so, I think some US schools FALL applications have opened and it's even possible to get the admission before December. .. which you can then ask for grace to resume in Spring with this FALL Admit.

Am just permutating, don't really know if this is practical but what do you think.
