Hello great people,

I will be going to New Orleans, Louisiana but my ticket has a 15hr layover at Newark, New Jersey before connecting with united airline to New Orleans

1. Will I have to Pass through immigration at Newark before connecting with united?

2. Where will I spend the 15hrs?

3. Where will be my POE?

Thanks for your nice anticipated responses
Yes you will clear with immigration at Newark.
I guess You will spend it anywhere you want in the US because you would have been cleared and stamped in by the cbp. But it will be good you stay in the airport so you can make your connecting flight. Remember you will still have to check your luggage in all over again for your United Airline connecting flight
Your POE is Newark.

Hello house!
My sevis fee receipt expired 24th July but i used it at the consulate before it expired and no issues were raised or whatsoever. I hope there won't be any problem at the POE?
This could be a problem.
Quickly send email to your school dso to be sure that your sevis is active.
If your sevis is not active, they will have to create a new sevis account and generate new ID for you. And probably you will have to pay another sevis fee and possibly get another I-20.
Anyhow, contact them sharply. It is a big deal

My F1 Visa Transcript @ Lagos US Embassy
The Interview proper went thus:
(I took a little while before I approached him and He was smiling to me here cause of the drama I saw between him and an applicant who he just denied visa, and how the guy refused to go and insisted that the VO should tell him what to do or school to choose or even course to apply for)

VO: Good Morning, how are you?
Me: I am fine Sir thank you, Good Morning and how is work going?
VO: Very fine. Pass me your documents
Me: I passed him the document very slowly
VO: Which school are you going to?
Me: Loyola University Chicago
VO: What Course?
ME: MSc Bioinformatics
VO: How many schools did you apply to?
ME: 4 Schools in all. And they are Loyola University Chicago, University of Memphis, Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, and Virginia Commonwealth University at Richmond
VO: How many admitted you?
ME: All 4 schools admitted me.
VO: So why did you choose Loyola
ME: Well, I chose Loyola mainly because of the perfect research fit i have with my supervisor whose work on prediciting gene regulation across diverse population is a specialised extension of my bsc project. Secondly i got full scholarship that covers all my expensis; that is, full tuition scholarship, full health and dental insurance coverage and a very generous stipend.
VO: Tell Me about your BSc Project?
ME: I worked on targetting the 16srRNA, dupA, and ureA genes in H.pylori, and by extension to develop a method that could be used for diagnosis of H.pylori and ulceration in paediatric population ( He Seemed Impressed here with a smile and cut me short)
VO: What year did you graduate?
ME: 2015, from the University of Lagos. I studied Cell Biology and Genetics
VO: I know you did NYSC? What year did you finish the NYSC? And what have you been doing since then?
ME: Yes in 2016. I served in a Village secondary school where i taught chemistry and physics to ss1 to ss3 students. However, after service i stayed back to see my ss3 students through to their waec and neco, and the principal and the village community were very supportive of me. After that, I came back to Lagos and took a Job with a pharmaceutical company as a medical sales rep. However i resigned few months later to ready my applications for my msc academic pursuit, I also continued private tutoring for students.. (Then He cut me short)
VO: Did you write any test?
ME: Yes, I wrote GRE and TOEFL
VO: What are your scores?
ME: Well i wrote GRE twice actually and I got 304 and 306. On TOEFL i got 103. (He Looked very impressed here too, and kept giving me glimmer of smiles)
VO: How much is your stipend? ( He asked is it 1500$ per month?)
ME: No, it's 2000$ per month ( He smiled again, I was also smiling too)
VO: So what will you be doing to receive this stipend?
ME: I will be working as a research assistant for my supervisor. So i will be assisting in carrying out genome sequencing and analysis, and also tutoring undergraduates in the Lab.
VO: Have you travelled out of Nigeria before?
ME: Yes, I have been to University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus for a Summer School on a Commonwealth scholarship. The scholarship was awarded to me because of the essay I wrote on the prospects of transgenic technology in solving world food crisis. (He kept flashing smiles and looking impressed)
VO: So what will you do after your studies?
ME: I will return back to Nigeria to take up lecturing and research position in my school. My department has plan underway to create a bioinformatics unit that will be charged with genomic data analysis, I will also be working and consulting with several research institutes in Nigeria (He cut me short again)
VO: So you do not want to go for PhD after your MSc?
ME: Well, because of the changing nature of the field of bioinformatics as it is relatively new, research questions will also be diverse in the years to come. So i will like to work in order to determine that research question I want to answer before considering PhD.
VO: So you are saying if Loyola gives you fully funded PhD that you will not take it? (He was smiling at me here)
ME: I will like to return back to Nigeria (He cut me short and laughed at me plus smiles)
VO: well it is not bad for you to go on to PhD.
ME: Yeaaaaaaa (Me Smiling too)
VO: Your Visa has been approved. (He cirled the Muri Okunola address for my pick up, Then I smiled and brought my ear closer to hear all he was explaining. And he also had this excited expression on his face as he was instructing me about my I-20)
VO: Remember to have your I-20 on you when you are travelling or else they will send you back at the POE (I laughed here, and he smiled too and advised that I should travel before class starts on 27th August)
ME: Thank you and do have a great day.

Very special thanks to Walspring009 for also assisting in paying my sevis fees.
Thank you very much ProfOjah1234 for all the Ginger and help. And bobority I appreciate.
And Much thanks to Learner007 for the numerous mock interviews you had with me. Boss I appreciate greatly.
Boss Bigfrancis21 thank you very much for the supports your are giving me.

All Thanks be to God Almighty!

mayd16:
GOOD MORNING PEOPLE, PLEASE HELP IN REVIEWING MY PROPOSED TRANSCRIPT, MY INTERVIEW IS TOMORROW MORNING, THANKS

VO: Good morning ma'am, pass me you I-20, passport please.
Me: Good morning. Sure, here they are.
VO: What are you going to the US to do?
Me: I am going Jamestown community college for a certificate in network and systems administration This Certificate program can be a very hard stuff for you to sell
VO: What is your highest degree?
Me: Bachelor of Biochemistry
VO: What year did you graduate?
Me: I graduated in 2013
VO:Why are you going for an associate degree why not a bachelor degree
Me: I want a degree that will take me just two years and considering my sponsors budget, university is way more expensive. This response here is not the best. You already have a degree, and If cost will be an issue; the vo could ask, why not do the certification in aptec or NIIT. Why waste fleight ticket money that can be used to gain this same certification in Nigeria? This is a question you should ponder.
VO: Why are you switching career
Me: My first job in the IT firm was an eye opener for me but jobs were not assigned to me because I do not have a degree related to the IT industry So you have just clearly stated it here now that jobs were not given to you because you do not have a degree in IT. So why aren't you going for a degree in IT then. Why waste your time and money on a certificate or associate degree course that will probably not land you any serious jobs since you not have a degree in IT. A course that you could probably do online for a price far cheaper than your air ticket to USA and also probably cheaper than what aptech may charge you here in Nigeria?
VO: why this program
Me: My goal is to support organizations by ensuring a smooth running computing infrastructure, so getting a degree in this program will give me the practical and theoretical knowledge to achieve this goal and also it will not limit me to my place of work. You just said your course is a certificate course or even an associate degree. SO it is not qualified to be called a degree!
VO: How much school did you applied to
Me: 4 other school, Kansas city CC, Jefferson CC, Metropolitan CC, and Houston CC.
VO:How many gave you admission
Me: 3
VO: Why JCC
Me: Of all the school that gave me admission, Only JCC introduced business as part of the curriculum for my course of interest which was a side catch for me and also the department provides one on one mentoring by major professors like professor Williams and Mr. Jeffery.
VO: What have you been doing since then?
Me: After my NYSC in 2015, I got a worked in an IT firm as a customer support (training and implementing hospital software, then in 2016 I got a job in my current place of work as an IT consultant where I support and monitor the IT operations) Ask yourself, How can someone work as an IT consultant when they have clearly stated that they were a complete novice when it comes to IT, and you already stated that your first place of work could not assign jobs to you in your current state.
VO: Who is paying for your studies?
Me: My place of work will be sponsoring my studies Why will your place of work sponsor you to study for a certification or Associate degree in IT when you are a novice in the field, and keeping in mind the huge cost of living and studying in the USA, why will they gain by sponsoring you?
VO: Why are they sponsoring you?
Me: I have been able to improve the hospital operations by introduce the use of hospital software to run our operations Where did you learn the skills to do this? and how did you exactly improve there hospital operations. Remember you had said your place of work is an IT Firm.
VO: Do you have any children?
Me: No ma'am
VO: Are you married?
Me: No ma'am
VO: You qualify for a Visa ........
Me: Thanks
In all sincerity, I feel with all these points I raised, It maybe difficult for you to sell a good explanation to each of them.
If you could, I will humbly suggest that you cancel your interview and visa application and do not appear for the interview. Please do not use this application to stain or jeopardize your record in-case things go south
Probably an Agent may have done this package for you; But I must tell you that this could be a tough sell.
It will be better you go through this USA thread from Page 0 and study to master the process and then apply for suitable qualification. It could still be something in your Biochemistry with some touch of IT.
This journey is not something your undertake in a haste, else you could make things unnecessarily difficult for you.

Best!

Well from your list of admits...
Loyola is the highest ranked school there, followed by Kennesaw.
Did you get any form of funding from of any of the schools mentioned.
Let Funding guide your choice here... with research fit, funding is the next major reason to chose a school.
Also I know Loyola Chicago computer science program to have active and outstanding professors who are great in their field. Also the Campus is beautiful, if that sort of thing attracts you too.

Tee94:
Hi everyone. I need help deciding on a program...

I got into a few programs in the US for MSc Software Engineering & MSc Computer Science with Software Engineering track. I have tried over the past few days to decide on which one to attend, but I'm not making a headway. I have done a ton of research, read reviews on reddit, rate my professor and so on. I just want input from anyone who is or knows someone currently enrolled in one of these schools to provide me with more "real" information, you know, what It's actually like attending any one of these schools, particularly as a Nigerian student.

The schools are :

Bradley University, Peoria Illinois.

Kennesaw State University, Georgia.

Loyola University, Chicago.

University of Houston- Clear Lake

Towson University, Maryland.

Thank you.

It took a lot of courage to post your low GRE score here, given that most scores posted here are usually above 300 and some getting close to 330.
The truth I want to tell you is that, the GRE is a tough exam and one is most likely to come out with an abysmal score if they prepared in a month or less. Also, preparing with technically insufficient materials is another straight way to scoring well below 300.

That been said, I want to encourage you to write another GRE test, and to give yourself at least 3 months for intensive preparation. Remember the Fall 2019 cycle you are targetting is still far; the applications become active from around October.
You also need to prepare with adequate materials; and so many have been mentioned in this thread.. Thus you will need to search for them.
Materials like
Manhattan 8 strategy series
GRE official guide
NOVA GRE Bible
Magoosh videos (which the link has been shared here, please search for it).
And other materials you will come across in this thread.
Do a lot of timed practice tests online.

Please endeavour to read this thread well for study guides, strategy and materials.
You could check all posts by Scholastica16, Akatovic, Time2smile etc.
I am confident that with enough preparation with good materials, you will score well above 300 in your next try.

Another advice; in this pursuit for US Admission, you will have to do a lot of personal research and use peoples experiences shared here and else where. Browse and research very well about your schools of interest; lookout for faculties of interest that works on your area of interest; call the program coordinator of the course you want to know more about and also do not hesitate to call any faculty you like his or her work on the phone.
You should send emails for enquiries or to show interest; but always follow it up with a phone call. You can also call first. Whenever you call, if the call goes to voicemail, do not be shy to leave a short voice mail on why you called and nudging them to reply your mail.

It's a tough process; but you will end up loving the experience.
You have my best wishes

Thank you.

Yes I am still expecting from Uni. of San Francisco
Okay that's very good.
I think you should stall a bit before accepting Claremont; then use this week to reach out to San Francisco and see where they are with your application.
Also you could ask Claremont to consider you for Fall 2018 if that can give you more funding package or more time and opportunity to seek out other sources of funding.
You are already making good progress in the process. Good news and offers attract more good news and offers too.
Good luck in your pursuit for success and career advancement.
