Well said @Charles but I beg to disagree. You conceptualize political education as d study of a country's POLITICAL CULTURE. If my knowledge of culture is nt outdated, I think it's referred to as the total way of life of people which spans across beliefs, norms, ideas, thoughts, myths( d list is endless). Limiting political education which is an aspect of our culture to scholastic terrain is tantamount to saying that our beliefs, values, wise-sayings etal. Can only be attained in d university/colleges. Albeit u classify political discussion in d family, media, peers etc under political socialization. But then, I can also vividly assert that one of d major benefits of socialization is to create awareness, education, as well as enlightenment abt events/issues that we have little or no knowledge about.

Maybe you are even oblivious of d fact that this forum as an aspect of socialization has been able to enrich people with zero political awareness abt the sine- qua- non of political practice in Nigeria. Wht then are we fusing abt? Maybe a little bit of digression into d concept of education will present a lucid picture of dis discourse!

I reiterate, EDUCATION IS BEYOND LITERACY!

When u talk abt INSTITUTIONS, it calls for an explicit usage. You talked about institution as if university is not an institution itself. Good you affirmed that institutions have a wide range of meanings. But then, I can hardly differentiate the kind of political education acquired in d university to that which is obtained at military Academy. Both undergo phases of training only that while university training appear more theoretical, military training combines both theory and practical applications. But the question is can this be the only avenue through which political education can be attained? What exactly do we mean when we say POLITICAL EDUCATION?
To me, it cld be an avenue through which pple are made to be politically aware and effective. It's about giving pple d ability to read issues and events politically and this can be thru using their ideas, form of thoughts as well as arguments. Hence, political education shld even focus more on enhancing political ideas rather than knowledge acquires through political institutions. The latter is only necessary once an interest in politics itself has been established. This bring us to the question as to which avenue political education can be attained besides university, colleges, and even military institutions. What happens to political discussion in d family, the media, peers, debates, seminars, sympossium and even forums like this?

Education is beyond literacy and can be acquired through various channels. So is political education.

I'm beginning to love dis thread at least for it educative aspect only that charles assertions in his previous comments appear satirical in nature and I'm not too pleased. We are not here for contest abt which University is best. This will ostensibly douse hatred and tear us apart.

That said, I'll like to pick charles up somewhere in ur argument where u tried to inject the concept of social contract and u delineated it as the product of the state through an agreement. You might be right but I feel ur presentation there was weak. Wen you argue, you have to vehemently consider the audience who are aliens to ur field. Hence, the need for conceptual clarification. We cannot also neglect the importance of tracing concepts back to its etymological connotations. This will enhance an understanding that is effectual and generate a sparking interest among the diverse audience.

The term social contract is not an homogeneous concept. To the best of my knowledge, there are three major proponents of the term aside from the contemporary political thinker ( John rawls). They include Thomas Hobbes, J.J Rousseau and John Locke. I quote u " social contract comes in b/c the state came into being as a result of an agreement" is fallacious. Infact, I can say categorically that u have committed a fallacy of composition. That assertion of yours can only be appropriately attributed to J.J Rousseau. Hobbes' opinion differ so is John Locke. Tho they appear to dance to the same rhythm even tho their ideas differs. But at best , you can say according to Rousseau contractual postulations, the state is a product of an agreement. Hobbes believes the state predates the establishment of government and he calls it the state of nature but the conditions of life in the pre-contract state was unfavorable. Life under the state of nature was solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short. Everything was chaotic. It would be a state of war of all against all( Bellum omnium contra omnes). The desire to avoid such an unacceptable state of affairs made pple to unanimously agree to enter a social contract.

Perharps,I didn't get ur conception of the state. Maybe a better elucidation will do. I got to go now! I typed all dis in the gents. I was engrossed in d discussion and I'll love to be part of it. A lot to debate on!

Akin444: Yes bro...the student affairs stopped d mobilization due to d nysc quota system but biochemistry graduates were told to come for their mobilization as soon as senate approve there result next week. You are very correct on d quota system issue, there is dis my corper friend at DSA unit, he told me the skul will only send 3000 names to Nysc and those who couldn't make the list would be mobilised against Batch 'C'. I immediately informed him to help me confirm if my name was on d list which he did. Infact he told me I'm among the first 30 on d list. I knew my name was there bt I needed to b sure. Most of d grievances that ravaged the Batch A thread were those arising frm omission error and that I can't afford. I'll still make sure I visit that skul bfr they eventually send those names.

OOU can like to determine one's progress!!!

First to wake in my house and often returns home late at night. It's more ardous n challenging than I envisaged bt I'm relishing it! Infact I'm right here in d store doing some filling. It was actually a call frm my colleagues at skul that intimated me abt d released time-table. I had to quickly minimise the transaction page on my boss desktop to confirm d report. I'm more thn elated!
