I plan to write the GRE early next year whilst in my nysc period.
I have obtained my HND in Electrical Engineering with a 3.08/4 CGPA

,checked online to find out the duration of a post graduate program but stumbled on a post that says postgraduate study falls into three categories

1. Professional masters for employment after the program
2. Academic masters for further studies
3. Doctoral degree


Meanwhile a source told me I'll have to obtain a post graduate degree before applying for a master's program.
Don't understand the logic here

Don't over complicate issues, bro. We call it postgraduate program here in Nigeria. They call it graduate program in the US.

I need to ask: Are you planning to apply with your HND?

Most schools require that you've a baccalaureate degree in your proposed course. That's equivalent of a Bachelor's degree.

But, don't take my word for it.

Look for your desired course, and Google any TWO schools offering the course at the graduate level.

Next, find out the contact email of the coordinator (there's always someone to contact, if prospective applicants have questions and inquiries).

Contact the individual for the two schools. Let your email be short, straight-to-the-point and brief.

AFAIK, schools offer a. M. Eng. b. MSc and c. PhD

M. Eng. pretty much applies to those who would want to come in from industry, for graduate study.

MSc is for preliminary research. Think of this as the NEUTRAL gear while driving. You go for MSc if you want to test the waters, if research is your pot of soup, or not.

PhD is the highest point of academic research - research zenith. You bring so many skills to bare here. Your creativity, perseverance, resilience and determination will go far than any other thing. Any other thing like your talent, GPA or GRE scores.

Also, SirRiddy (and the house in general)..... 1) with good GRE scores, SOP and references, do i realistically stand a chance of going for a PhD in my (original) Geophysics field? 2) can i get admission with GA/TA funding into a MSc Geophysics (with this cgpa/wes evaluated GPA)? ... pls don't mind my questions o! just trying to make well-informed decisions!....... That seems to be the OT this days, the VO also asked me 'what is financial economics' . abeg if you are going to embassy you better be grounded in your field or have a general idea.

I will tell a simple story that happened at Abj like 3 years ago, a younger cousin went for an interview, the VO was impressed about his quantitative SAT score of 780, he was about to issue the Visa but on second thought the guy asked for the guys WAEC certificate, he had an F in Mathematics, the guy asked him how can you get 780 in Qtv and get an F in WAEC. The man wrote a polynomial on a shit of paper and asked him to solve it, he couldn't, he was flagged for fake docs because he went there on 2 subsequent occasions and was denied, he later confessed to using a 'miracle centre' . I learnt 2 lessons 1. Vo's are not idiots 2. If you must lie you better be good at it but ultimately it pays to be truthful

So I wrote my gre exam today, and it was worth d experience. I tank GOD cos I think my score wasnt so bad afterall (307). Just encouraging others not to be scared, cos if I can, then u can.

Good advice. I did similar. I also checked wikipedia. They have a list of all the research universities in USA. And I went through the websites of about 200
g schools. It was a very time consuming (2 months) and sometimes frustrating process, but it helped.
