When you guys attacked her gender without having a concrete evidence, did you apologize to her?

She went as far as proving you guys wrong. The same guy who was critized about his write ups, already graduated and he had a distinction.

Some people write incorrectly online but in real life, they write pretty well. Of course, she has already taken corrections on that.

Please I don't wanna talk about this again. Do not ask me to apologize to you if you do support "cyberbullying".
Who are the "You Guys" you are referring to, did you see my moniker among them. You should read carefully before you start writing out of context. I don't indulge in senseless and stupid arguement especially in a faceless forum.

In our attempt to be humble n admit we didn't do well in the GRE, sometimes we r quick to write off the possibility of admission with a low GRE score. Fine, it is good to anticipate and actually do well in the gre but really it's not d ultimate. Even with a good gre score, you of ur own will cannot guarantee anything, so please stop giving urself unnecessary stress. I know a colleague that got admitted for Masters of Engineering Management at Dartmouth College (an Ivy league school) with funding n a gre score <300. I know it's grace but also don't give up on urself @ no time
Thank you for writing this. People don't know that admission is politics. Have you ever wonder why Asian Faculty mostly have MS/PHD student also from their regions.

Thanks a lot!

However, I became worried when I noticed they were being evasive while talking to them on the phone on Friday and Saturday. They were using gimmicks like feigning not being able to hear you properly when you're demanding answers to certain questions, and also cutting calls in the middle of conversations; but the moment you say "stop pretending, I know you can hear me, so just give me answers now", they now reply you, saying "no sir, I'm not pretending, network is bad here", and you now begin to wonder how come they were able to hear that part clearly. I experienced that with two of their staff I spoke with.

At a point, I had to threaten to visit their office with Mobile Police officers first thing in the morning on Monday (yesterday)- which I was really willing and ready to do, as I had gotten in touch with some of my friends who are Mopols and a relative who is a military officer at Ikeja Cantonment- when I noticed that the staff that processed my registration was making contradictory comments, and also sounding evasive. She said the issue would be sorted out this week, as her boss would be in town on Monday (yesterday). I then gave her a timeline for resolution, after which I would get them arrested (and I meant it).

Later that day (Saturday), I got a mail from ETS, and to my surprise, the mail indicated that the outstanding balance of $225 had been paid. So this made me feel more uncomfortable about those guys (B.Y. Mafit). Why did the lady say it would be sorted out upon her boss's arrival this week when it could be sorted out the same day?

I narrated this experience to a friend of mine who has done GRE in the past, and he said he hadn't heard about B.Y. Mafit before and couldn't say anything about them, but he advised that I be careful of GRE registration agents, especially the ones that offer discounted fees, as he once heard that some of them make use of fake/ stolen credit cards, which would eventually make ETS cancel test appointments or even withhold test results. That's why I felt I should share my experience here in case there are people who have experienced such and would be able to advise accordingly, so I don't lose out at the end of the day.

Thanks, and I'm expecting more comments, people!
When she told you it will be sorted out you should know that there is every possibility that she doesn't have the power to act all alone without the consent of her Boss. Good it was sorted out.

Good morning and a happy Sunday to everyone. Want to ask especially for those that have submitted applications in the past for masters or PhD(whether successful or not).
How long does it usually take to hear back from schools one applied to especially as an international student?
Thanks
Varies from school to school, just check the admission timeline/application process. Some will say "allow 4-5weeks" after deadline.

Morning guys. I want to raise an issue concerning WES. Is it compulsory I do WES or any form of conversion? Most schools ain't asking for it. My gre is in 7 days... Nervous!!!
Depend on what the school is asking for. Some schools require you to send your transcripts to an evaluation body, to evaluate it to US 4point scale system, why others do not.

Chairman since you are interested in Postgraduate, what you should do immediately is to start contacting Professors.
The most effective approach is to use google to seek profs that need RA/GA or that have multiple positions for MECH/CHEM
use the phrase below to search "I am looking for self-motivated Ph.D students Mechanical"
you can thank me later.
Create a simple mail. make sure you follow the instructions on the profs personal page. (this is the most effective approach)
Simple as that!

Good day house. I've been following this thread for about 2-3 months now and I must say, the information I get from here are invaluable and priceless.

I'm an undergraduate of Economics and Statistics (in my finals), currently on a CGPA of 4.09/5.0, I however estimated my CGPA to be around 4.0 after graduation.
I intend to apply and sit for the GRE immediately after my last exam next year June or July, then start working on my pursuit of a funded PhD program for either GTA or GRA.
1) In order to boost my chances of getting admitted for a PhD program, I'm thinking of meeting one of my lecturers here as regards working on a research work with him or any of his colleagues. But I sincerely do not know how to approach him sad , maybe it's because of my inability to build a personal relationship with any of them. undecided
2) Although I'm yet to make any constant decision pertaining to the area of Economics I'll be specializing on, but I'd love the experienced folks in the house to please help me out with some safe institutions where a potential Economics/Statistics Phd student would not only be admitted but also get funded easily.
3) Is it possible for a CGPA within the range of 4.0-4.1 to be evaluated to 3.5/4.0 by WES ?

Lastly, I've started working towards obtaining an amazing score from the GRE especially the Quant aspect. Downloaded about 90% of the required study materials, silently following this thread, quora, magoosh site, plus studying the official GRE texts ( at a very slow and steady pace for now tho).

I thank you all once again as I earnestly expect your answers to my seemingly "naive" questions. embarassed
1). Have you gotten a supervisor yet, if YES, summon the courage to work up to him and discuss your plans (you may not tell him that you r going to the US for a PhD after graduation for now) with him. Tell him/her that you will like to publish some papers with him/her in order to gain research experience.
2). No idea
3) Your 4.0GPA should be somewhere 3.4/3.5.

The GRE isn't the greatest admission requirement. A 'bad' score would hurt a good profile tho. cry

What is a bad score?
I don't understand them honestly, except they are just typing for typing sake. People with 320+ still gets admission rejects.

Would be helpful for my school selection.
Put it like this on google: name of schools/usnews ranking
Top Tier University are universities that are rank nationally i.e among national universities.
Why Regional University are ranked regionally in their respective regions.

The Top Tier Universities are usually the elite Universities.

Thanks happyday.. God will bless you..

If I had known that Brown university is a top school, I wouldn't even have mailed the Prof.. I thought its one of this "yao yao" school that can easily give admission with fundings.. I just discovered that a day prior to my skype interview date.. I have all the prerequisites and but CGPA is very low and getting 320 on GRE is "eehhnn" (Though there is no stated GRE score on the website and the Prof just said "just do well in your GRE ).. But I can promise my destiny of getting 300-310 cos me I be olodo and I dey work full-time but am improving ever since I've been utilising my free hours to study..

Thanks for yesterday bro..
You do not know what you are about to get that is why you are talking like this. Let me tell you something, a professor have an absolute say of who and who not to admit to work in his/lab at PhD level. Just try to meet the minimum graduate school requirement, you will be fine. I personally think he has accepted you already stay positive.

SirRiddy, Happyday, Pennstate et al, I need an answer on this issue: what weight does published papers carry in the admission process? I am wrapping up my MS in Nigeria and I am trying to publish my research, however, the publisher (a top ranked peer-reviewed one) doesn't want to accept my work due to a myriad of factors; the reviewers are questioning every detail in the paper and the response I have given isn't impressing them. I want to ask you guys if you published your undergrad/MSc papers in reputable journals when you were studying in Nigeria. Is it really compulsory to publish in reputable journals for the sake of seeking admission to US schools (especially PhD)?

Thank you all as I anticipate your responses.
Yes it is good to have publish paper(s) especially for PhD admission it gives you an unseen advantage (most people if not all still gets admission without published papers, but it is yourself you know about). I remember when I was presenting a seminar during my MS all my colleagues back then where having issues with writing and referencing I never had such problems because I had writen some papers before I went for graduate studies. Some PhD Programs is focus on Research and Publications while some is on Mentorship, if you happen to find a school that is focus on research and you want to be in that school, how do you prove to them that you are a research guy-it is through your publications.

Let me ask, was it co-authored along with your supervisor or just you alone. Was the details (being questioned) pertaining to citations, methodology, sampling, structures, presentation or results etc It will do you a lot good if you publish your first paper with an experience person in your field of study, that way you will have absolute confidence.

Having said that I will give you a story pertaining to what you are feeling-Most times some reviewer are so clueless (especially Nigerians: because when you send a paper to any journal, what they do mostly is that they look for people in that same field in your country and then they send your paper to them for review ). The second paper I did with my Prof, we had sent the paper for publication to one journal, eight months on we were still correcting and rearranging, the reviewer was so clueless that the BASIC (FIRST) PRINCIPLE OF HYDROGEOLOGY He/She didn't know, we were so embarrassed to the extent that we started quoting so many author-gurus in the field, yet He/She was still adamant.
What we did is that, we quickly withdraw the paper and send it to another journal within two months, the paper was published.

There are a lot of peer-reviewed journals all over the places it doesn't matter how they are ranked (My Opinion) when you look at some of the journals some professors in Nigerian University publish in you will laugh-you dont want to be like them though, you are a young researcher with years ahead of you. To publish a paper is not like cooking beans. If you are satisfied with what you have done withdraw the paper and sent it to another journals. The main issues I have come across in the cause of getting a paper published are as follows: merge your diagrams, too many diagrams, too many tables merge some, take away this and that, citations in work but not referenced and typo error which is pretty basic, check line 5 and line 14 etc.
My MS Thesis was publish in a peer-reviewed journal.

Good luck to you.
Sorry for the long epistle
