The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called off its seven-day warning strike to press home its demand for the implementation of the new minimum wage. This was according to a statement from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Ayuba Wabba. He said the strike is being called off as a result of the firm and formal assurance of the Federal Government to reconvene the tripartite committee on the new minimum wage. alo was part of the Nigerian team that played at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Image: Goal Nigeria When Super Eagles Eagles coach Gernot Rohr named Odion Ighalo in his team to face Seychelles in a 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifier, it sparked debates among football fans in the West African country. The Changchun Yatai who was largely bashed for this unimpressive showing for the team during the 2018 World Cup, now has another chance to redeem himself. Taking China By Storm Ighalo, since he returned from the World Cup, has bagged eight goals in as many games for his club – making him the most in-form Nigerian striker. This year alone, the former Watford man has scored 16 goals in 27 games in the Asian nation. Eagles, Seychelles Clash Perfect Redemption Opportunity For Ighalo Odion Ighalo moved to China in a 20 million pounds deal during the January transfer window. Credit: Skysports Last season, he recorded 15 goals in 27 games. Prior to his call-up by Eagles in 2016, Ighalo was instrumental to Watford’s promotion to the English Premier League during the 2014/2015 season. The following season, he scored 15 goals in 37 appearances for the English side. In fact, he was a hero, netting 25 goals in the 2015 calendar year (a record unmatched across all strata of English football). Ighalo: Firing Blank For The West Africans However, the former Hornets’ player has largely failed to provide such firepower when in the green and white colors of the West Africans. Since his call-up to the Nigerian team, Ighalo has only found the net four times in 21 matches. Barring his strike against Cameroon in a friendly encounter in October 2015, and a 2018 World Cup qualifier in 2017, Ighalo netted his other goals in wins with teams which many do not consider as tough enough – Chad in June 2015 and Luxembourg in May 2016. On the whole, he has an average of 0.19 goal a game; that is one goal in every 5.25 games for Nigeria. Bashed For Fluffing The Lines In Russia Following his misses in Nigeria’s last group game against Argentina at the World Cup in Russia, Ighalo was the subject of criticisms by Nigerians. Age, Competition Not On His Side Ighalo was a former Watford striker/Complete Sports The 2-1 defeat meant the team crashed out of the competition when they needed just a draw to secure passage to the round of 16 in Russia. He admitted his failure to take chances against the South Americans during the World Cup encounter. “I take responsibility for this game because if I had taken those chances I had, that would have made it a different ball game now,” the Edo-born forward said after the team’s ouster at the competition. “I missed a couple of chances that would have finished the game but that’s football because sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.” Rohr Keeping Faith With The Ex-Watford Hitman Nigeria’s head coach Rohr has, however, stood to the defense of the striker after he released the team list for the clash with the East Africans on Saturday. Eagles, Seychelles Clash Perfect Redemption Opportunity For Ighalo Rohr still believes in the former Julius Berger man. Image: Abia Fact News “I want to give him the opportunity to prove to the fans that he can still score the goals,” the German coach said. “He was scored a lot of goals in China and he scored again last week. “I want to give him the opportunity to show to all his critics that he is still able to do well with us and to score the goals.” Not Many Were As Lucky As Ighalo With The Eagles The Ajegunle-raised man is lucky enough to get a recall to the fold after fluffing the lines against the Abiscelete in Russia. At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Yakubu Aiyegbeni side-footed a goal-bound chance against South Korea. Image: AP That was the end of his career with the Eagles, just as Godwin Odiye who netted an own goal that cost Nigeria a berth at the 1978 World Cup. Age, Competition Not On His Side At 29, Ighalo does not have the luxury of time and his case may well be compounded by the young players on hand to take up the job in the Eagles team. After failing to find his rhythm in the 1994 African champions’ first game against Croatia at the 2018 World Cup, Rohr went for the attacking pair of Kelechi Iheanacho and Ahmed Musa. Iheanacho, 21 and Musa still 21, means they have more time on their side. The latter did not fail in delivering when it mattered – he grabbed two goals as Nigeria mauled Iceland 2-0 in their second game at the competition. Musa finishes off a delightful second after using his pace to beat his markers (photo credit: Getty Images) Iheanacho has had a more impressive showing in goal for the West Africans. He has scored in every 2.5 matches for the three-time African champions. Although one could argue that he began his Super Eagles career late, it is perhaps the more reason he needs to step up his game and fill the gap left by Emmanuel Emenike since his bow from the team. Having taken the Chinese Super League by storm, one expects that Odion Ighalo transfers that same light to lead Nigeria as they run for a place at the next Afcon in neighboring Cameroon. With 16 goals in 21 games in China since the turn of the year, Ighalo is undeniably Nigeria’s most in-form forward. But to regain the faith of the team’s handlers and the fans’ deflating confidence means the former Granada man needs to bring his A-game on board to the Eagles against the lowly-ranked Pirates. As Rohr noted, Ighalo must show in Seychelles that he “can score the goals” for the Eagles. Anything short of that in Victoria, the striker might just be bidding farewell to the team. https://www.concisenews.global/2018/09/08/eagles-seychelles-clash-perfect-redemption-opportunity-for-ighalo/

Senate President Buokola Saraki on Thursday declared his intention to run for the presidential post in the forthcoming 2019 elections. The former Kwara State Governor declared his intention to run for the post, just a day after Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso joined the race. Saraki had defected to the Peoples Democratic Party from the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside his successor Abdulfatah Ahmed recently. He would also vie for the PDP’s ticket with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar among others. Concise News looks at five (5) reasons Saraki wants to replace President Muhammadu Buhari at the Aso Villa: DOGGED FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION VIA STRONG INSTITUTIONS One of the reasons Saraki declared for the seat is to fight against corruption by building strong institutions. He said, “Ours will not be a selective fight against corruption. The emphasis will be on strengthening institutions, with a particular focus on deterrence. “We cannot afford to compromise our institutions with proxy wars against perceived political opponents. We see the fight against corruption as crucial to Nigeria’s economic development.” RESTORATION OF NIGERIA’S ECONOMIC FORTUNES According to the former Kwara State Governor, “Our economy is broken and is in need of urgent revival in order for Nigeria to grow. GDP growth rate has declined. “Diversification remains an illusion. Unemployment is at an all-time high. Businesses are shutting down. “Jobs are being lost in record numbers, and the capital needed to jumpstart our economy is going elsewhere.” He added that “Nigeria is perhaps more divided now than ever before. We are increasingly divided along regional, religious and ethnic lines. “Nigerians are also divided by class, a festering gulf between the ‘Haves’ and the ‘Have-Nots.’ “The fault lines of this nation are widening to an alarming degree. We must do something fast, and we must be brave about it.” MAXIMUM SECURITY FOR NIGERIANS During the declaration, Saraki vowed to “ensure the security of lives in Nigeria. As things stand now, no one is safe in this country. “No one feels truly safe. We must restore the sanctity of the rule of law and strengthen democratic institutions in order to build a just, fair and equitable society for all.” RUNNING TO EMPOWER NIGERIAN YOUTHS, HEED THEIR CALL One the reasons the Senate President declared was to give Nigerian youths a voice and heed to their calls to represent them. “It is widely acknowledged that ours is a relatively ‘young’ country bursting with tremendous energy, ability, and potential,” he said during the declaration. “More than 70 percent of our population is under the age of 40. You are indeed the future of this country. “Ordinarily, such a young population would be the envy of many Western countries that are faced with aging populations, but the dire state of our affairs tarnishes the youthful advantage that we have.” SARAKI BANKING ON EXPERIENCE After eight years as Kwara State Governor, Saraki boosted that he has a “unique blend of executive and legislative experience to push for and implement reforms that will deliver real improvements in the daily lives of our people. “I know what it takes to create jobs and grow the economy. I can make the tough decisions when it matters. “I will spearhead a new agenda that can transform the lives of ordinary Nigerians in real terms.” https://www.concisenews.global/2018/08/30/five-reasons-saraki-wants-buharis-job/

The President Muhammadu Buhari administration may have concluded on Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun’s alleged National Youth Service Corps certificate forgery. In a report, July 7, Premium Times had alleged that Adeosun skipped the mandatory NYSC but presented a certificate of exemption. According to the NYSC law, exemption certificates are issued to Nigerians who finished from polytechnics and universities (both in Nigeria and outside), below the age of thirty. However, the minister, at the time she graduated, did not fall under this group of persons. And it’s been 50 days since the allegation with neither Adeosun nor the Buhari administration saying anything tangible on the matter. Although the NYSC is investigating the forgery claims, the Federal Government had noted it would not make further comments on the matter until the probe is concluded. Concise News gathered that the Minister had over time ignored attempts by the media to reach her on the issue, sparking rumors that she has the backing of Buhari. Adeosun Too Good To Be “Touch[ed]”? It appears that the Buhari administration does not want Adeosun to be touched. The Buhari administration believes that she had done a great job in resetting the economy, notably bringing the country out of recession. This might not be far from what the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) Chairman Itse Sagay (SAN) had recently said. “This woman [Adeosun] is a brilliant and extremely valuable member of this government,” Sagay had said. “A lot of the good things happening now – the welfare that Nigerians are enjoying and are going to enjoy, because it takes time, and the way our economy is booming, how we got out of recession – are due to her expertise, her commitment, her sacrifice.” He added that “If I were President Buhari, I would never, ever touch that woman because she’s damn good.” Buhari Plotting Pardon For Minister To make the allegations die down and save face, the Federal Government plans on giving the minister a pardon, Guardian Nigeria quoted sources close to her as saying. Furthermore, Adeosun is said to be ignoring calls for her to speak on the allegation so it can die off naturally. The approach, against her simple and easy-going nature, is said, according to her minders’ position, to make her look unbothered by the weighty allegation. Legal Battle Rages The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) had sued the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Brigadier-General Sule Kazaure over the development. SERAP noted that it is seeking “an order for leave to apply for judicial review and an order of mandamus directing and/or compelling General Kazaure and the NYSC to urgently provide specific documents and information on Mrs Kemi Adeosun’s application to the NYSC for Exemption and to publish widely including on a dedicated and on the NYSC website, any such information.” https://www.concisenews.global/2018/08/26/50-days-after-buhari-adeosun-mute-over-certificate-scandal/ MYND44, Lala

The Super Eagles will be playing Argentina for the fifth time in six appearances at the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia. Both teams were drawn in Group D of the soccer fiesta that will begin in June 2018. Since making their debut in 1994, the three-time African champions have met the South Americans in all but once at the group stage of the World Cup. Overall, the teams have met eight times at the senior level. The odds favour Lionel Messi’s side. They have won five, lost two and drawn 1. Recently, Nigeria mauled the South Americans 4-2 in an international friendly in Russia. Let’s take a historical ride on the rivalry between both sides at the World Cup. USA 1994 (2-1) Coming as African champions, the Super Eagles took on the La Albiceleste at the Boston Foxboro Stadium on 25 June, 1994. They were in Group D with Greece and Bulgaria. Samson Siasia gave the Eagles the lead in the 8th minute of the game. However, Claudio Caniggia’s brace in the 21st and 28th minutes condemned the Eagles to their first World Cup defeat. Nigeria still made it to out of the group having spanked Bulgaria 3-0 in the first game and then bashed Greece 2-0 in the last match. They lost went on to lose 1-2 to eventual finalist Italy in the second round. Korea/Japan 2002 (1-0) After reshuffling the team following a failed attempt at winning the African Cup of Nations in 2002, Nigeria were again paired in Group F alongside Argentina, as well as Sweden and England. In the opening game, Gabriel Batistuta’s 63rd minute goal gave the two-time world champions the win. Nigeria later lost their second game 2-1 to Sweden before playing a goalless draw with the Three Lions of England. However, the South Americans did not make it past the group stage as they ended with 4 points. South Africa 2010 (1-0) Lars Largerback took the team to the first World Cup on African soil. They were again housed in Group B with Argentina. Other teams in the group were South Korea and Greece. The Eagles lost the match 1-0 courtesy of Gabriel Heinze’s 6th minute header. They failed to make it to the second round having lost to Greece and played a 2-2 draw with South Korea. On the other hand, the South Americans got to the quarter-finals before Germany mauled them 4-0. Brazil 2014 (3-2) Going into the competition as reigning African kings, Nigeria were once again placed in the same group with Argentina. The group also had debutants Bosnia Herzegovina and Iran. Barcelona forward Lionel Messi gave Argentina the led in the 3rd minute before Ahmed Musa equalised a minute later. Messi struck again just before the end of the first half with Musa leveling the scoreline in the 47th minute. Marcos Rojo then finished off the match for the South Americans in the 50th minute. Argentina then lost narrowly, 1-0 to Europeans, Germany in the final on South American soil. Russia 2018? So, as the clock ticks faster for the football showdown in Vladimir Putin’s country, will the Super Eagles get their revenge?
