The Osun State Internal Revenue Service on Wednesday sealed off the main gate and administrative block of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife over an alleged non-payment of about N1.8bn tax.

Concise News learnt that the officials of the agency and some security men stormed the school after securing a court order. 

“Officials of the Osun State revenue agency sealed off our main gate and the secretariat and the other places this morning. They came together with armed policemen and civil defence operatives," an official of the school who craved anonymity told Punch. 

“They closed the main gate and some members of staff, commercial bus drivers and business operators, especially food vendors and others became agitated and this led to a serious crisis. The gate was eventually opened but other places remained closed.”

The Vice-Chancellor Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede confirmed the development, saying, “It is true they sealed off the place. The truth is that there was a backlog of 2015 and 2016 and we have agreed to be paying N5m every month. We paid N500m and agreed to be paying N5 m every month.

“But from January 2017, we have been paying our normal PAYE deductions every month which is thirty something million, we have been paying. So, we are going to negotiate with them again on it.

“The backlog was caused by under-deduction of PAYE. We have not reneged on any of our obligations since 2017. I am confident that this issue will be resolved.

"The Governing Council of the university met with Governor Rauf Aregbesola in March on the same issue and he understood the reason and our pledge to pay it every month.”

This is not true. The bank has released a statement to that effect. Check their social media handles for confirmation.

Over 400 students of the University of Ibadan have been advised to withdraw from the school due to failure to meet up with academic requirements. 

It was gathered that the decision followed the meeting of the Senate of the institution where results of graduating and non-graduating students were considered and approved.

According to report, most of the affected students were admitted to the school when the post-UTME test was not conducted due to opposition to the exercise in the 2016/2017 year.

Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof. Adeyinka Aderinto told the press in Ibadan that the school will not lower its standard because of its present economic challenges. 

“The University of Ibadan will continue to uphold its standards despite dwindling funding to the university, by adhering to global standards," the Vice Chancellor added. 

“I call on parents to monitor their children to ensure that those who have been asked to withdraw from the university do not lie and continue to extort money in the name of being a student at the university.

“The conduct of UI Model of Post-UTME screening has helped to separate men from boys and helped the institution in maintaining its historical standards as a global brand.

“Being admitted to the UI is a privilege that requires students to be up and doing in their studies.

“There are minimum academic requirements a student must meet at the end of the session and those who fall short of that would have to leave the university.

“UI has been able to invent its own model of screening applicants and it has shown that those who we screened performed far better than those not subjected to our screening after taking JAMB.”

The Kaduna state Government has sacked the newly-recruited teachers who replaced the ones that failed a competency test.

Commissioner for Education Ja’afaru Sani revealed this in a briefing on Tuesday, stressing that the teachers got the employment via dubious means.

According to Sani, some of the teachers could not write acceptance letters which led to the organization of screening for them.

“At the end, 4,562 incompetent ones, believed to have found their way into the final list illegally, were fished out, leaving 11,335 competent ones," Sani said.

“The 11,335 newly-recruited teachers, predominantly degree holders, including a few with Master’s degrees, have already been deployed to over 4,000 primary schools.

“This was after they had undergone vigorous induction training, along with the remaining old teachers, to equip them with modern teaching techniques and effective classroom management.

“We are hoping that between now and next month ending, we will be concluding the recruitment process of the balance of 13,665 teachers.”

The Chief Executive Officer of Nairabet Akin Alabi has declared his intention to run for a position in the House of Representatives in 2019.

In a statement on his website on Wednesday, Alabi revealed that he wants to represent  Egbeda/Ona Ara Federal Constituency under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He wrote: "I have decided to run for office in 2019. I am considering contesting for a seat in the Federal House of Representatives.

"I am from Egbeda Local Government in Oyo state which means my Federal Constituency is Egbeda/Ona Ara Federal Constituency. I am a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

"Intra party activities have begun. About 10 of us have signified interest within the APC already. We will all jostle for the ticket at the primaries in a few months time."

Depending on how fast you're at learning, such skills can be mastered in less than three months.

You can check  your area for 'barbing' salons and discuss with them that you want to learn and they'd surely give you the necessary criteria peculiar to them.

And for making hair,  with dedication and willingness, you can master how to fix wigs, do simple weaving among others, within a six-month period.

After picking one of the skills for students awaiting admission, NYSC,  there are two ways to work. It is either you work for someone or set-up your store.

The former involves sharing your daily profit with the owner of the saloon who provides the needed tools for the work.

On the other hand, if you have the cash, you can rent a space, buy your tools and be your own oga. With about N100, 000 - N500,000, depending on the location, you can have your shop ready.

Phone/Laptop Repair


Data from the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) reveals that there are well over 200 million phone lines in the country.

That shows a huge market for any one who would pick up phone repairs.  The beauty of this is that picking up the skills is not hard and does not take a long time. Same also with laptop repair.

And so, in  about three to six, with commitment,  you can pick up one of the skills for students awaiting admission, NYSC.

It is even easy to start: it requires no shop as you can do it anywhere; tools are cheap to acquire and thus will not put a hole in your pocket.

The same can be said of laptop repairs.

Graphics Design


Although this requires a continuous learning, you can get the fundamentals and grow on the job with time.

Like I noted earlier on, the internet has opened up opportunities to make money. People now have e-flyers for their programmes.

They write ebooks and thus need a book cover. People celebrate birthdays, child dedication, marriages and weddings.

That’s a huge reservoir of opportunity to tap into and make some cash if you have knowledge of graphics design.

There is no limit to how much you can ear. It only boils down to how fast you can deliver your job with quality and professionalism.

Cake/Pastry making

You can never go wrong in learning how to make pastries from doughnuts, egg roll, and the rest. It will actually take you some dint of commitment to acquire the skill.

The good news about this is that the market is there; there are many willing to pay for your services for birthdays, weddings, parties and a host of other social engagements.

Digital Marketing/Social Media Mgt


Instead of wasting money on data plus your time shuttling different social media platforms, you can get trained in social/digital media management.

You can learn this skill in three months and with your smartphone, earn money while flipping through different social media accounts, 'slaying.'

Photography


Even though the advent of smartphones seem to have made photography less lucrative, students are crazy about capturing precious moments in school – matriculation, birthdays, seminars, convocations – the list is endless.

If you know your worth, good at what you do, then pick up your camera and head go to event centers, take those fine shots and have some cool cash in your pocket.

Find someone a photographer, tell him to show you how to handle cameras even as you utilize the power of the internet to scale up this skill.

You can then save up money; ask your parents to get a camera for you and you are good to go.

If you grab this skill, it would be a game-changer for you. Moreover, starting off is not pretty hard as you don't need a shop, at least from the onset.

And then, you can use social media to promote your product, attracting potential buyers in the long-run.

Former Minister of Aviation Femi Fani-Kayode has described Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby as President Muhammadu Buhari's "new-found bride."

Ali Madaki, father of deceased Nigerian singer Zainab Ali-Nielsen, aka Alizee, has revealed that her daughter’s husband Peter Nielsen Schau began fighting his wife late last year.

The Dane has been arrested in connection with Alizee and her four-year-old daughter’s murder Thursday at their residence in Banana Island, Lagos state.

Alizee’s father said the Danish has been of “good character” since he knew him over seven years ago.

“I have known my late daughter’s husband for over seven years now. At the outset, he was of good character but last year, he started fighting his wife,” he told a national daily.

“Last November, a case was reported at the police station when he beat her to a coma. He then wrote an undertaking that he would never batter her again.”

In addition, Madaki said: “On Thursday morning, he called me; I was in Abuja. Since I missed his calls, I called back and he told me he saw my daughter and granddaughter on the floor in the kitchen.

“I asked what went wrong; he didn’t say a word and dropped the call. One of my two daughters staying with them called their mother and broke the news. We took the next flight to Lagos and found out she was dead truly.


“I didn’t even know my grandchild was dead too. I told my daughter to get Petra for me and we should go, then she told me she was dead too.

“I was shocked. The husband claimed it was gas suffocation that killed them. We know that gas doesn’t kill people that way. In the pictures, you would see bruises all over their bodies. They were strangled to death.

“I strongly believe he did it because their compound is highly secured. Whenever I visited them, the security operatives had to confirm my visit with them before I would be allowed in.”

Alizee’s father said, “I don’t know if he has a history of being an alcoholic or drug addict. She once came back to our house in Abuja after being battered by her husband.

“She was there for almost a month. The man came and started begging that he was drunk. He said he consumed too much alcohol on the fateful day he beat her.

“Since they had been together for a while and he had never misbehaved, I accepted his plea and allowed Alizee to return to Lagos.”
