FoodPrices Of Tomatoes, Pepper Down By 45% In Lagos by PenPrince07(op): 5:45am On Dec 13, 2017
Ahead of Christmas celebration, prices of tomatoes, pepper, and onions have reduced by about 45 per cent in Lagos.

NAN price checks at Mile 12, Whitesand, Iddo and Oko Oba markets in Lagos on Monday, revealed that the drop in prices was due to a bumper harvest of agricultural produce.

The news agency reports that a basket of tomatoes, which previously sold for N15,000 now goes for N8, 000 while red pepper (tatashe) now cost N8000 compared to its previous price of N14,000 a basket.

A basket of chili pepper (rodo) also reduced from N18, 000 to N10, 000 and a jute bag of onions, which previously cost N30, 000, now goes for N20, 000.

A 25-litre of vegetable oil, which previously sold for N11,500, now cost N10,700, palm oil decreased from N11,000 to N10,300, while a measure of garri now cost N400.

However, the price of a 50 KG bag of rice ranged between N13, 500 to N17,000, depending on the brand while a measure of beans cost N1,500.

Mr Femi Odusanya, the spokesman for Mile 12 Market Traders Association, attributed the price drop to the ongoing harvest season for most of the produce.

“Over 20 per cent of the annual four million metric tonnes of tomatoes produced in the country is supplied to Mile 12 Market annually and redistributed to over 400 markets in Lagos and Ogun State and six ECOWAS countries.

“About 200,000 metric tonnes of the 800,000 metric tonnes of tomatoes annually supplied to Mile 12 Market get wasted due to postharvest losses.

“Presently, the supply of the product is more than the demand because farmers commenced harvest in December and there would be a surplus in the market until April when the harvest season would end.

“That is why we have been advocating for increased investment in tomato processing plant to mop up the excess and reduce waste, create jobs and increase contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP),” Odusanya said.

SportsFA Summon United, City Over Derby Fracas by PenPrince07(op): 6:38am On Dec 12, 2017
The English Football Association have summoned Manchester United and neighbors City following their post-game fracas on Sunday.

Reports suggest that the clubs’ players were involved in a tunnel bust-up following Sunday’s derby which City won 2-1.

Both sides’ managers were also involved in the brawl at the Theatre of Dreams.

As a result, the FA have asked the duo to appear before them to give explanation on the matter.

City’s assistant manager, Mikel Arteta, had a deep cut on his head after the incident.

In addition, media reports from England show that United boss, Jose Mourinho, was drained in ‘milk and water.’

It was gathered that this happened after Mourinho took exception to what he saw as an excessive celebration from City after the game.

The fiasco between the two clubs was, however, not a part of referee Michael Oliver’s.

But, the FA are inviting them to render an account of what they know about the incident.

Both sides have until 5pm on Wednesday to respond to the summons.

SportsOwen Feels ‘Sorry’ For Chelsea After Barca Pairing by PenPrince07(op): 5:57am On Dec 12, 2017
Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves feels ‘sorry’ for Chelsea after they were on Monday drawn to face Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16.

According to Hargreaves, the Blues have the worst draw of the English sides in the competition.

He said the game will be difficult for Antonio Conte’s men to win but expressed hopes that the Italian will bring his a-game to bear in the encounter.

“I feel sorry for Chelsea fans obviously [because of] Barcelona, that’s the difficult one,” he told BT Sport.

“For Chelsea, it’s really tough, but Conte is the one manager that, with the defensive tactics that he has, could find a way to get a result against Barcelona.

“For Tottenham obviously it’s difficult. But I think if you’re Manchester United you’re very happy, [and] Liverpool. Manchester City will be the happiest of everyone. Basel, that’s a brilliant draw for them.”

The first legs will be played on Tuesday, February 13 and Wednesday 14, with the remaining teams playing their first ties the following week.

PoliticsBuhari’s APC Has Nothing But Hardship To Offer – Belarabe Musa by PenPrince07(op): 5:43am On Dec 12, 2017
Ex-Kaduna governor Belarabe Musa says the President Muhammadu Buhari administration has nothing but hardship to offer Nigerians.

The National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party spoke at the 54th National Executive Committee of the party in Kaduna on Monday.

He said the party rode to power on lies and empty promises.

According to him, the APC, since taking over power, had not done anything but increased hardship in the country.

Balarabe said the economy had become comatose under the present government. He stated that unemployment has assumed critical proportions.

“As you are all aware, our nation today remains in a very sorry state despite all the lofty promises and flowery speeches made by the ruling government of All Progressive Congress, APC, at the inception of the administration in 2015,” he said.

“The economy remains comatose, and in some sectors, particularly in industry and commerce, it is even getting worse. Monetary and fiscal management has continued to lack coherence and consistency, or even predictability and strategic planning.

“Unemployment, particularly among the youths, who constitute the bulk of our population, has assumed critical proportions and is now, for all practical purposes, a national emergency.”

Continuing, he sad, “this APC administration, which rode to power on the back of false promises to this generation of hapless young men and women, seems to have no answers to this ticking time bomb beyond slogans such as N-Power.

“APC, both at the centre and the states it controls, has proved that it has little or nothing else to provide Nigerians other than further mass impoverishment, frustration and hardship.”

PoliticsPoverty Ravaging Nigerians Under APC Govt – PDP by PenPrince07(op): 2:32pm On Dec 09, 2017
Joblessness and hunger has increased in the country since the All Progressives Congress took over in 2015, the Peoples Democratic Party has alleged.

Caretaker Chairman of the party Ahmed Makarfi said this on Saturday in Abuja at the party’s National Convention.

According to him, hunger is ravaging the land, adding that the price of foodstuffs is now beyond the reach of average Nigerians.

Advertise With Us

Makarfi also alleged that the rate of crime, especially terrorism, ‘is creeping back with greater ferocity’.

“It is therefore with a high sense of responsibility that I seize this opportunity to draw the attention of the government, for, it seems unaware, to the fact that Nigerians are hungry as poverty is ravaging the land,” the PDP chair noted.

“The relative ease with which foodstuff and other essentials were available and affordable to the average Nigerian under PDP governments is now history.

“Insecurity in the North East which was thought to be receding is creeping back with greater ferocity, particularly against soft targets.

“Kidnap for ransom has taken a life of its own, so are the incessant farmers/herdsmen clashes and criminalities so camouflaged.”

Furthermore, Makarfi noted that “Joblessness has never been at such high level in the history of this country, while the education sector is all but comatose.

“It is common knowledge that no society progresses if it doesn’t secure the future of its future leaders. It is therefore necessary that a shot in the arm is applied on the education sector to ensure that we do not toy with the destiny of our children.”

Foreign AffairsN. Korea Tags Trump ‘Mentally Deranged Dotard’ Over Jerusalem by PenPrince07(op): 11:55am On Dec 09, 2017
North Korea has blasted US President Donald Trump for recognising Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, describing him as a ”dotard.”

The hermit state has joined the condemnation of the move and called it a “reckless, wicked act”.

In a statement on Saturday via state media, Pyongyang, however, said Trump’s decision was not surprising.

“Considering the fact that the mentally deranged dotard openly called for a total destruction of a sovereign state at the UN, this action is not so surprising”, a foreign ministry spokesman was quoted as saying by the state-run KCNA news agency.

“But this move clearly shows to the whole world who is the destroyer of world peace and security, pariah and rogue in the international community.”

The Asian nation says it “strongly condemns” the US move to recognise Jerusalem as capital.

It pledged “firm support and solidarity for Palestinians and Arab peoples struggling to win their legitimate rights”, adding that “The US will be held accountable for all consequences from this reckless, wicked act.”

Both nations have made countless threats to each other.

Recently, Trump warned Pyongyang of “fire and fury”, stressing that Washington would “totally destroy North Korea” if it had to defend itself or its allies.

SportsWhy Martins Should Return For World Cup – Udeze by PenPrince07(op):
Ex-international Ifeanyi Udeze says Obafemi Martins’ fine form and experience are enough for him to get a recall to the Super Eagles for the World Cup.

Gernot Rohr is yet to find a suitable attacking pair for the team as they prepare for the 2018 World Cup.

Anthony Nwakeme was tested in Nigeria’s last qualifier with Algeria but failed to impress.

Udeze has, however, said the team needs the former Inter Milan striker who last played for Nigeria in 2015.

“Martins is my option for second choice behind Ighalo and I believe he should be called up,” Udeze told Brila FM.

“He has the experience of playing at the World Cup level and his recent form is hot. Martins is Super hot right now and you can’t be shy about admitting that fact.

“A player who scores important goals and recently contributed to the FA Cup victory in China is one you want to consider when the debate comes up.”

Recall that Rohr had hinted that Martins was in his plans for the soccer fiesta.

“Yes, the door is open to all our best players, including Martins,” Rohr told KweseESPN.

“He is scoring a lot of goals and we need to get competition for all the positions, especially centre-forward.”

PoliticsMinistry Of Happiness: Okorocha Needs Deliverance - Ex-Gov., Ohakim by PenPrince07(op):
Former Imo State Governor Ikedi Ohakim says Rochas Okorocha needs deliverance over his creation of the Ministry of Happiness and Purpose Fulfillment.

Recall that the Imo governor created the Ministry earlier this week.

He also appointed his sister, Ololo Ogechi, as the Commissioner for that Ministry.

However, Ohakim, who spoke to newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday, described the development as an ‘abomination.’

“This is a sort of abomination. How can this man continue to insult the sensibilities of Imo citizens?” he asked.

“Whose happiness are they looking for when salaries and pensions are not paid? Are we looking for the happiness of the Okorocha family and friends?

“I have not heard about such a ministry anywhere in the world, before. It is not in Britain that gave us independence.

“It is not in the United States of America, whose democratic system we copied. It is not in Canada. It is nowhere in West Africa.”

Ohakim added that, “I have searched through the internet and I am still searching to see where it was practised and couldn’t find any.

“Honestly, this is a bizarre creation and I won’t be surprised to see the Governor’s aides struggling to defend this indefensible act.

“Deliverance is what Okorocha needs for his rescue mission. Someone somewhere is mentally challenged. We pray for help before more than one runs amok.”

SportsUdeze Reveals ‘juju’ Experience In Football by PenPrince07(op): 2:09pm On Dec 07, 2017
Former Super Eagles star Ifeanyi Udeze has revealed that he left a team because of ”juju.”

Udeze, who was part of Nigeria’s 2002 World Cup squad, recalled that he went to Ivory Coast for trial and performed well in his first outing.

He, however, said that on the second day, he could not play well. The defender said he noticed pains on his ankle and had to run back home.

“When I went to England, I was at Birmingham with an Ivorian player on try-outs before I eventually joined West Brom,” he told Brila FM.

“Just before training, we were chatting but I noticed he pulled out a set of talisman and tied one on the arm and the other around the waist.”

He also said: “The first ever club I played for was in Cotonou. The first day, I was spectacular in training dribbling everybody down the wing to score.

“Shocking thing was the next day I couldn’t pass the ball or even hold on to it.

“The Coach who took me there then drove me to his house where he hit my aching knee with some substance and I felt a sharp pain and something like a pin fell through it.

“I packed my stuff that day and ran back home.”

TravelMotorists Lament As Fuel Scarcity Worsens by PenPrince07(op): 1:01pm On Dec 06, 2017
Motorists have complained about the latest round of fuel scarcity, alleging it might be a ploy to increase the product’s pump price.

Fuel queues, which started emerging in some parts of the country on Monday, were seen spilling onto some roads in Lagos and Ogun states on Tuesday, causing gridlock.

Many of the private depots in Apapa, Lagos, where many marketers get petroleum products for distribution to other states, did not have petrol while those who had were loading skeletally.

It was gathered that many depots in Apapa did not have petroleum products on Tuesday, while the few with products recorded low activities.

The ex-depot prices charged by the depots for PMS ranged from N139 to N143 per litre, compared to the official ex-depot price of N133.28.

In some states, the fuel scarcity has yet to be felt in the metropolis as all the filling stations are still selling at old petroleum products to buyers at the government regulated prices.

Motorists also wondered why the latest crisis was happening at a time Nigerians were preparing for the Christmas and New Year festivities.

According to reports, consumers were seen fighting to get to the pumps, while fuel attendants and ‘area boys’ made brisk business from desperate motorists who wanted to jump the queues so as to be serve quickly.

Despite the development, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) described the situation as panic buying, insisting that it had sufficient products to cater to the needs of all consumers.

The Group Managing Director, Maikanti Baru, who returned to the country after queues surfaced at filling stations, said the corporation was doing everything within its reach to address the matter.

Baru was quoted in a statement issued on Tuesday by the corporation’s spokesperson, Ndu Ughamadu.

PoliticsWe Packed Dead Bodies In Libya – Nigerian Returnee by PenPrince07(op): 12:41pm On Dec 06, 2017
A Nigerian migrant who recently returned to the country has narrated what he passed through in Libya while seeking passage to Europe.

Over 250 Nigerians landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Wednesday.

They arrived a few hours after 144 of their compatriots voluntarily returned from the Maghreb nation.

The returnees were said to have arrived aboard a Libyan Airlines aircraft at the Cargo Wing of the airport at about 1.30 a.m.

One of the returnees, identified as Omoburo, said he was in a Libyan detention camp for nine months.

“They used us to do all sort of things, to carry bombs, to carry ammunition, even to ‘pack’ dead bodies,” he told AFP.

Another returnee, Franklin, confessed that they went through hell in the Maghreb country.

“It’s good to be home, because I’ve been in hell in the land of Libya,” Franklin said. “I’ll start a new life in my country.”

LiteratureRe: How Can I Be A Proficient Writer? by PenPrince07: 3:25pm On Dec 03, 2017
Well, being a proficient writer is not a day's job. However, I commend your determination. There is no hard and fast rule to being a better word cobbler but there are basic things you must take cognizance of:

1. Read! Read!! Read!!!

It'd sound cliched but that's the most basic way to become a better wordsmith. As a writer, you'd deal with words and it'd be laughable if you don't read to: (a) expand your vocab (b) know the styles of writing (c) expand your mind etc.

Subscribe to writing blogs, read about grammar, writing and all things, as much as you can.

2. Practice The Craft

Depending on your genre, writing often is a way to build your muscles. Like the saying, 'practice makes perfect', writing often, makes you a better pen master.

You'd start with 200-300 words daily and as time goes, increase it. Also, note that it's not just about writing but when you write,be intentional; identify your errors and correct them in subsequent ones.

If you don't have a platform, social media - Facebook, Nairaland, Medium, etc - are readily available for free. Publish your thoughts on these platforms daily and watch your craft grow.

3. Join Writers' Groups

Here, you'll see people who are like-minded. They'd give you advise, encourage you, even share opportunities when they come. They are many of them on social media and even offline. Search for them and join, but ensure you're not an onlooker - participate.

In sum, while others are born with innate writing skills, there are those who mastered the craft by committing to continuous learning. You might be discouraged at the onset but just keep on writing. Don't forget to also fine ways of monetizing it - it's essential.

I wish you the best in your new-found love. May your ink flow ceaselessly!

TravelReturnee Migrant Says He Drank Fuel To Survive En Route Libya by PenPrince07(op): 4:00am On Dec 02, 2017
They were 41 that left Kano to Libya en route the Sahara Desert from where they would get to Europe but only 10 of them made it to the Maghreb nation.

That is the story of Kelvin Sunday who had saved up N965,000 to embark on the journey after a friend who made it to Europe through Libya had convinced him.

However, Sunday, like many other migrants who are reportedly being sold into slavery in Libya, had a different story to tell after he was repatriated to the country recently.

According to him, the sad tale began when their truck broke down in the desert.

“We were in the desert for three days without food or water. We were drinking our urine to survive,” Sunday told Punch. “It got to a point that when there was no more urine to drink, we started to drink fuel.”

He said on getting to Libya, he was kidnapped by traffickers but later was able to escape.

Sunday said: “When we got to Libya, I was working in my burger’s house. I spent two weeks there before I went to the seaside (in Tripoli) where we would cross. From Sabha to the seaside in Tripoli, I spent two weeks.

“On the way, some traffickers kidnapped us. They beat and loaded us into their Hilux van, but few of us jumped down and I broke my leg. I managed to escape as they were shooting.

“We spent two days in the desert again after that escape. We later saw a motorist whom we begged to help us get to the seaside.

“We were camped at the seaside for three months without any opportunity to cross through the seas. People trying to cross the sea told me to avoid Nigerians helping Libyans to sell people. But later our camp was raided by soldiers, who took us to prison.”

However, luck smiled on him after spending four months in the cell. IOM officials were able to effect his return to Nigeria.

SportsNigeria – Argentina Head To Head At The World Cup by PenPrince07(op):
For the umpteenth time, the Super Eagles will be playing Argentina at the Fifa World Cup.

Both teams were drawn in Group D of the soccer fiesta that will begin in June, 2018.

Since making their debut in 1994, the three time African champions have met the South Americans in all but one of their group stage outings.

Overall, the teams have meet each other eight times at the senior level. The odds favour Lionel Messi’s side. They have won 5, lost 2 and drawn 1.

Recently, Nigeria mauled the South Americans 2-4 in an international friendly in Russia.

USA 1994 (2-1)

Coming as African champions, the Super Eagles took on the Albiceleste at the Boston /Foxboro Stadium, 25 June, 1994.

They were in Group D with Greece and Bulgaria.

Samson Siasia gave the Super Eagles the lead in the 8th minute of the game.

However, Claudio Caniggia’s brace in the 21st and 28th minute condemned the Super Eagles to their first World Cup defeat.

Although Nigeria made it to the second round of the World Cup before bowing out.

Korea/Japan 2002 (1-0)

After reshuffling the team following a failed attempt at winning the African Cup of Nations, Nigeria were again paired in Group F alongside Argentina, Sweden and England.

In the opening game, a Gabriel Batistuta 63rd minute header gave the South American the win.

Nigeria later lost their second game 2-1 to Sweden before going for a goalless draw with the Three Lions of England.

South Africa 2010 (1-0)

Lars Largerback took the team to the first World Cup on African soil. They were again housed in Group B with Argentina.

Other teams in the group were South Korea and Greece.

The Eagles lost the match 1-0 courtesy of a Gabriel Heinze 6th minute header. They failed to make it to the second round having lost to Greece and played a 2-2 draw with South Korea.

Brazil 2014 (3-2)

Going into the competition as reigning African kings, Nigeria were once for the fourth time placed in the same group – Group F – with a Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina.

The group had debutants Bosnia Herzegovina and Iran in contention.

Barcelona forward, Lionel Messi gave Argentina the led in the 3rd minute before Ahmed Musa’s equalizer a minute later.

Messi struck again just before the end of the first half with Musa leveling the scoreline in the 47th minute.

Marcos Rojo then finished off the match for the South Americans in the 50th minute.

Russia 2018?

So, as the clock ticks faster for the football showpiece in Vladimir Putin’s country, will the Super Eagles get their revenge?

PoliticsSupporting Buhari Best Bet On Igbo Presidency – APC by PenPrince07(op): 5:02am On Nov 30, 2017
Stalwart of the All Progressives Congress in Anambra state Tobby Anumaka has urged the Igbo to vote President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019, should he seek reelection.

Anumaka believes by voting for Buhari in 2019, the Igbo would have brightened their chances of producing a Nigerian President of Igbo extraction in 2023.

According to him, the Anambra Governorship election showed that the Igbo have accepted the ruling APC.

Anumaka said the defection of Emeka Ojukwu to the APC was in the best interest of the Igbo.

“I assure you that Igbo will see the importance of Emeka’s decision in 2019 because it will be the time Igbo will decide if they want to produce president of Igbo extraction or not,” the APC chieftain told Daily Sun.

“What it means is that if Buhari is re-elected in 2019, the coast will be clear for Igbo to lay claim to the presidency because other geo-political zones must have taken their turn.”

FamilyPrince Harry’s Would-be Wife, Markle, To Become Anglican, British by PenPrince07(op): 6:07am On Nov 29, 2017
American actress Meghan Markle will be baptised in the church of England and also become a British citizen following her engagement to Britain’s Prince Harry.

Markle, a Protestant, was not baptised as a child. She attended a Catholic girls’ school in Los Angeles.

The 36-year-old will be the first American, since Wallis Simpson, to marry into the royal family.

On Tuesday, the Royal family announced that the pair will wed in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle in May, although a specific date has yet to be fixed.

It was gathered that Queen Elizabeth II granted them permission to marry in the chapel, a site of many royal weddings.

Also, Prince Harry, 33, was baptised there in 1984, with the royal family paying for the wedding.

On Friday, the pair will undertake their first official engagement in Nottigham, England.

They will attend an AIDS charity fair and speak to staff and students at a school.

Markle has not said if she will renounce her American citizenship.

Reports say that in the United States, the oath administered to naturalised citizens demands that they “entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty.”

However, federal law does not state what happens if a native-born American — like Markle, who was born in Los Angeles — marries a foreign prince.

PoliticsOmokri Blasts Sagay For Jonathan Criticism by PenPrince07(op): 6:03am On Nov 28, 2017
Former presidential media aide Reno Omokri has taken a swipe at Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Anti-Corruption Professor Itse Sagay for criticising former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Sagay had said that “if Jonathan had another three years in the office, we all will be crossing Sahara to Libya.”

And Omokri, who served as Special Adviser on New Media to Jonathan, reacted to Sagay’s comment by alleging that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration is corrupt.

Omokri said facts show that Jonathan’s administration was more responsive to the plight of Nigerians.

“I hope Professor Itse Sagay is not going senile” Omokri said.

“How can he say ‘if Jonathan had another three years in the office, we all will be crossing Sahara to Libya.’ This assertion flies against the facts on the ground.”

He further said, “Professor Sagay spends too much time poking his nose into other people’s affairs and too little focus on his own business, that is why under his watch as chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Anti-Corruption (PACAC), Maina got recalled, reinstated, double promoted and still received salary (according to his lawyer).”

PoliticsI Can Take Oath That Buhari Is Very Clean – David-west by PenPrince07(op): 12:06am On Nov 27, 2017
Former Minister of Petroleum Resources Tam David-West says he can bet his life on the integrity of President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to him, there is no comparison between the Kastina-born President and former Military President Ibrahim Babangida.

”Buhari and Babangida are two different personalities. Buhari is a clean man. I can take any oath that Buhari is very clean and I won’t die. I cannot do that on Babangida,” David-West told Daily Trust.

“I cannot vouch for him not because he put me in jail but because that is the fact. Buhari has some good qualities, some positive characteristics that Babangida doesn’t have.”

He also said, ”Another thing is that if Buhari tells you something, believe it is true. But if Babangida tells you something, don’t be too sure.

“I want to quote former President, Obasanjo, when he said: ‘When Babangida tells you good morning, check your watch very well if truly it is morning’.”

The APC stalwart said Buhari is fit and should complete for a second term in office.

According to Kalu, who made this known on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics, monitored by Concise News, Buhari is the best candidate for the job.

Furthermore, Kalu said the president commands 10m voters in the country and will win any election by landslide if he ever declares interest.

He said Buhari is willing to challenge any candidate for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket and is not banking on automatic ticket.

On the resignation of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the APC, Kalu said Atiku’s resignation will not affect the party.

The former governor says he is still friends with Atiku and that people are free to be in any party they want.

A South African mother and daughter have given birth to babies for the same man with just four days separating them.

Mildred Mashego, 39, knew about her daughter’s condition and was shocked.

It was gathered that Mildred had advised the 19-year-old Patricia to go for abortion. This was before she discovered that it was not her boyfriend that impregnated her.

However, after the birth, Mildred’s mother said she had forgiven her for the grandson’s sake.

Further details revealed that the father of the children, Vincent Malumane, admitted having affairs with the mother and daughter behind their backs.

“I cannot go back now and explain what happened,” the man said. “All we have to do is focus on making sure that the children are properly cared for.”

The daughter gave birth first and then the mother. Both gave birth to healthy boys, making the children brothers, a nephew, an uncle and a grandson.
