The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) South West Zone D, has told  Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State to reopen the Ekiti State University (EKSU) or face mass action.

This was contained in a statement by NANS South West zone on Wednesday where they gave the state government 72 hours to heed to demands by workers of the institution.

According to them, failure to do that would “cause the students in Ekiti State to embark on mass action.”

They noted that with the recent development, it “will automatically become impossible for them [students] to participate in the NYSC mobilisation process.”

In addition, NANS demanded a reduction in school fees in the state-owned tertiary institutions namely EKSU, College of Education, Ikere Ekiti and College of Health Technology, Ijero-Ekiti.

“An acceptance fee is a fraud. We are against N50,000 and N100,000 acceptance fees in EKSU; N50,000 in College of Health Technology, Ijero and N35,000 in College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti," NANS added.

“Acceptance fee is against the masses. We also demand immediate resumption of academic activities in our striking institutions in Ekiti State.”

The Senate of Wednesday threw out a bill seeking to amend the National Youth Service Corps Act to allow corps members wear skirt, hijab among others.

Sponsor of the bill Senator Emmanuel Bwacha (Taraba-South), said the proposed amendment was to amend sections 13 and 16 of the principal Act.

According to Bwacha, the amendment was to “increase the penalty for the offences contained in the Act to make such fines reflect the present value of the naira.”

In addition, the lawmaker noted that the amendment was meant to “ensure that regulations made by the NYSC directorate prescribing uniforms and exercise regimen do not violate the religious practices and beliefs of corps members.”

Proposal

“In exercising its powers under Subsection 2(a) and (b) of this section, the directorate shall take into consideration the need to prescribe or adopt uniforms and exercise regimen or drills that do not violate the religious practices relating to modest dressing, and accordingly specify alternative uniforms and exercise regimen that conform to the religious dictates and conscience of corps members as recognised by the 1999 Constitution,” Bwacha proposed.

Fifteen students of the Federal University Gusau, have been expelled  for poor academic performances.

Vice Chancellor of the school Prof. Magaji Garba, revealed  this at a news conference shortly after the university’s matriculation ceremony on Wednesday in Gusau, Zamfara State.

According to Garba, the students of the university were expected to be serious with their studies and perform up to standard, noting that any student who scores below 1.0 Grade Point Average would be expelled.

Although he did not disclose names of the affected students, he noted that all the 27 programmes being offered by the institution would be accredited between April and May 2018.

Garba said the maiden convocation of the university would hold before the end of the year.

“We want to introduce new programmes into the university, especially engineering, which we believe is very important, considering the availability of solid minerals resources in the state," said the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Gusau.

“The Petroleum Technology Development Fund has sponsored five of our staff abroad for doctorate programme in engineering, to boost the capacity of our engineering department.”

About 10, 000 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo state.

Chairman of the APC in the state Barr. Anselm Ojezua said this on Thursday in Benin while receiving the defectors at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

Ojezua noted that the PDP in the state is dead and ready for burial, adding that the APC remains the viable party in the state.

JAMB's Head of Media and Information Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in Lagos on Thursday.

According to Fabian, the candidates can check their 2018 JAMB Mock Exam result by visiting www.jamb.org.ng with their registration numbers.

Benjamin described the conduct of the  2018 JAMB Mock exam nationwide as hitch-free.

About 245,753 candidates registered for the 2018 JAMB Mock exam which took place on Monday.

The 2018 JAMB Mock exam is optional for UTME candidates.

Professor Kingsley Moghalu has declared his intention to contest for the seat of the President of Nigeria in 2019.

US President Donald Trump has joined millions across the globe to mourn popular televangelist Billy Graham who he described as an “American hero.”

Apostle Suleman’s prophecy on Jacob Zuma being “humiliated” has come to pass after the latter resigned as South Africa president on Wednesday.

Doyin Okupe, former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has said he does not wish the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) well.

Okupe also noted that he is not a fan of President Muhammadu Buhari, adding that the recent herdsmen clashes is enough to end his reign.

Okupe said this on Wednesday in a lengthy Facebook post, stressing that the APC used the Boko Haram killings when they were in the opposition to oil their ”propaganda machine.”

The Federal Government has revealed that it spent $8 billion on the resuscitation of the Ajaokuta Steel Company without meaningful progress.

Minister of Mines and Solid Minerals Kayode Fayemi revealed this on Tuesday at the 2018 Kogi Investment Summit held in Lokoja.

According to the minister, the present administration is poised to revamp the company but efforts being made thus far have not yielded the desired impact.

Fayemi said: “The Governor [Yahaya Bello] said the goverment has money to revive Ajaokuta Steel.

“I must tell you that under the leadership of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, we have been working on that. FG has spent $8 billion on Ajaokuta Steel Company and nothing has come out of it.”

He noted how Bello had been on his neck to see that the project is completed.

“The governor has never allowed me to rest on the issue of Ajaokuta,” the minister said.

“Under the leadership of Vice president Prof. Yemi Osinbajo we are doing our best to bring Ajaokuta back to life.”

He equally challenged the state to “generate IGR from its solid minerals.”

The event featured the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding by Bello with foreign investors.

Suspected Fulani herdsmen on Tuesday morning reportedly invaded the Akure South Local Government Secretariat and drove workers away.

It was gathered that the incident followed a disagreement and it took the intervention of the commissioner of police in the state, Gbenga Adeyanju, and the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Pedro Ideba, to bring it under control.

One of the workers of the council was allegedly macheted by the herdsmen with the members of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees calling on the government to intervene in the matter.


Following the incident, the secretariat was deserted by the workers, some of whom returned home.

Prayers are needed to tackle the current farmer/herdsmen clashes in Nigeria, says the Lagos state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria.

Chairman of the chapter Apostle Alexander Bamgbola noted this in a press conference on Thursday in Lagos.

According to Bamgbola, the country needs divine intervention to halt the attacks.

He said the 2018 annual Inter-denominational Divine Service, tagged ‘Humility in service’ was to enable them pray against challenges faced by the country.

“Prayers for our land are very paramount. There’s no challenge confronting the state that cannot be surmounted with prayers,” Bamgbola said.

“Every situation of the country requires prayers and that is why we want to urge all the Christian faithful under the umbrella of CAN to attend the thanksgiving.

“We are not happy with the recent killings by herdsmen; such happenings cannot be confronted with a violent approach. This underscores the need for Christians to pray to God.

“There is no stronghold in the nation that God cannot pull down through prayers. I enjoin all Christians to attend the programme of great worship to God and corporate prayers for a better Lagos and Nigeria at large.”

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party has said that President Muhammadu Buhari has done badly and thus should not seek re-election in 2019.

Also, the party faulted a bigwig of the APC Bola Tinubu for trying to get Nigerians to accept the Buhari government for a second term.

The PDP added that the failure of Buhari administration is glaring for all to see.

“It is ludicrous that after almost three years of failure to deliver on its campaign promises, the Buhari Presidency is now moving around, cap in hand, looking for those to use once again to beguile Nigerians ahead of the 2019 elections,” it said in a statement.

“There is widespread disenchantment and indignation across the nation resulting from hunger and the inability of the Buhari Presidency to provide the people with basic necessities of life, which they had always enjoyed in the past.

“Nigerians are therefore waiting to see how Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who has also openly expressed his concerns and disapprovals on the mismanagement of the economy and whose large constituents are direct victims of the ineptitude, impunity, nepotism, dictatorial tendencies, corruption and insecurity that have characterised the Buhari Presidency, will now turn around to preach that all is well and attempt to sell a practically bad product to the nation.

“It is instructive to further state that the desperate move by the Presidency to politically prey on individuals is mere foolhardiness and a totally decadent approach to pit key leaders against the people on an issue that has already been thrown overboard.”

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria says the President Muhammadu Buhari administration has not addressed its “glaring failures.”

The team of Bishops, during a courtesy visit to the President in Abuja on Thursday, added that the goodwill he enjoyed when he came to power is all but no more.

“There is no doubt that when you came into office, you had an enormous amount of the goodwill of Nigerians, since many saw you as a person of integrity who would be able to bring sanity into a system that was nearly crippled by endemic corruption,” the Bishops said.


“Nearly three years later, however, one has the feeling that this goodwill is being fast depleted by some glaring failures of government, which we have the moral responsibility to bring to your notice, else we would be failing in our duty as spiritual fathers and leaders.”

In addition, they noted that, “Our beloved country appears to be under siege. Many negative forces seem to be keeping a stranglehold on the population, especially the weaker and defenceless ones.

“There is a feeling of hopelessness across the country. Our youths are restive and many of them have taken to hard drugs, cultism and other forms of violent crime, while many have become victims of human trafficking. The nation is nervous.

“Just as we seem to be gradually emerging from the dark tunnel of an economic recession that caused untold hardship to families and individuals, violent attacks by unscrupulous persons, among whom are terrorists masquerading as herdsmen, have led to a near civil war situation in many parts of the country.

“We are saddened that, repeatedly, innocent citizens in different communities across the nation are brutally attacked and their sources of livelihood mindlessly destroyed.

“Lives are wasted and property, worth billions of Naira, including places of worship, schools, hospitals and business enterprises are torched and turned to ashes.”

The South South chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has unanimously adopted President Muhammmadu Buhari for a second term.

Officials of the party in the zone made this known in a communique after a meeting at the resident of former governor of Edo State Adams Oshiomhole on Wednesday.
