Amb. Mellejor whose country has excelled very high in 8 of the 17 SDGs Goals emphasized the importance of building bridges between the Philippines and Nigeria, highlighting the immense potential for collaboration in various sectors. He expressed the Philippines' keen interest in deepening diplomatic and economic ties with Nigeria, a key player in West Africa. Amb. Nwachukwu and the SDG Council delegates echoed these sentiments, underscoring the need for strategic partnerships to drive sustainable development and progress. "We recognize the immense potential for our nations to work together to achieve the ambitious goals set out in the UN's Agenda 2030," Amb. Nwachukwu stated in his opening remarks. "By pooling our resources, expertise, and collective efforts, we can make meaningful progress on issues like quality education, inclusive economic growth, and climate action." A key focus of the discussions centered on education and cultural exchange programs. Amb. As signatories to the Paris Agreement, both the Philippines and Nigeria explored avenues for collaboration in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and disaster resilience, with the aim of aligning their efforts with the SDGs. *UN SDG - ANTI CORRUPTION WAR:* *CODE OF CONDUCT BUREAU CHAIRMAN RECEIVES AMB. NWACHUKWU SDG NATIONAL STUDENTS COUNCIL ON COLLABORATION VISIT.* In a landmark initiative aimed at fostering integrity and ethical standards among the youth, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) National Students Council paid a Collaboration visit to the Chairman Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), Dr Abdullahi Usman Bello, FCCA, CFE, to discuss potential areas of collaboration aimed at combating corruption and advancing the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Agenda 2030. Speaking during the visit, the National Coordinator of the SDGs National Students Council, Amb. Timothy Nwachukwu, explained that the council's core mandate is to promote the SDGs among students and the general public. He noted that corruption undermines the achievement of the SDGs, as it leads to a misallocation of resources, perpetuates inequality, and erodes trust in institutions and hence requires a synergy of all Institutions. Amb. Nwachukwu expressed appreciation for the CCB's commitment to promoting moral values and ethical standards in Nigeria. He stressed that the CCB and the SDGs Students Council share a common goal of building a better society through ethical leadership and good governance. He emphasized that the CCB's objectives align closely with SDG 16, which focuses on promoting peaceful and inclusive societies, access to justice, and effective institutions. He further harped on the need to establish integrity clubs on campuses to promote discussions and activities centered around ethical behavior and anti-corruption. The proposed collaboration will focus on educating the youth about the devastating impact of corruption on national development and the SDGs, Promotion of integrity, transparency, and accountability among students and the general public. *Dr. Abdullahi Usman Bello, stated that the CCB is responsible for enforcing the Code of Conduct for public officers, investigating corruption, and administering the Asset Declaration regime, ensuring that public officials adhere to high standards of conduct and transparency. He commended the SDGs Students Council for their efforts in promoting the global goals among young people. *$10 MILLION CAD WVL PROJECT:* *SDG NATIONAL STUDENTS COUNCIL EXTOLS CANADIAN GOVERNMENT FOR EMPOWERING MILLIONS OF NIGERIAN WOMEN* The Presidency, SDGs National Students Council, (Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on Students Engagement) has commended the Government of Canada for its empowerment initiatives aimed at enhancing the capacities and voices of Nigerian women through the Women's Voice and Leadership Nigeria Project. The project, which was funded by Global Affairs Canada, worked to increase gender equality and reduce gender disparities in Nigeria. It provided training, mentorship and financial support to women-led organizations and women's rights groups working to advance women's empowerment and gender equality. The project also engaged with influential men and boys to challenge harmful gender stereotypes and promote gender equitable social norms. Amb. Timothy Nwachukwu LLB, the National Coordinator, SDGs National Students Council, gave the commendation while speaking to newsmen in Abuja after a courtesy and collaboration meeting with Arash Irantalab Tehrani, Canadian Counsellor and Head of Development Cooperation, and Josephine Obinyan, Development Officer, Development Cooperation Section at the High Commission of Canada in Abuja. Amb. Nwachukwu praised the Canadian government for its support for women's empowerment in Nigeria. "The contributions of the Government of Canada through the Women's Voice and Leadership Nigeria Project have been invaluable in strengthening women's voices and leadership in Nigeria," he said. "The project's focus on enhancing women's capacities, challenging gender stereotypes, and promoting gender equality aligns with our own objectives and commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 5 on gender equality." Amb. Nwachukwu highlighted the importance of empowering women and girls in order to achieve sustainable development. "When women are empowered, entire families and societies benefit. Women's empowerment is critical for reducing poverty, improving health, increasing economic productivity and promoting peace and stability," he noted. "As students, we recognize the need to support initiatives that promote gender equality and challenge discriminatory attitudes and practices that hold women back." He also commended the implementing partners of the project, including ActionAid Nigeria, for their efforts in mobilizing and supporting 100 women led groups in promoting gender responsive policies at state and national levels. "Available data showed that the project's partners positively impacted 7,150,153 women and girls including people with disability (PWD) across 24 States and the Fct in Nigeria, disbursed 178 grants to 153 Women led Organisations while the sum of #271,445,478 (250,637 CAD) was saved by 7,563 women through the village savings and loans Associations (VSLA) among other results and we hope to see a continuation of the project." The SDGs National Students Council pledged to collaborate with the Canadian High Commission and it's Implementing partners in supporting women's empowerment and gender equality in Nigeria. "We have a critical role to play in sensitizing and mobilizing young people to support gender equality. We look forward to working with the Commission and it's Implementing partners to create more awareness about the importance of empowering women and girls and challenging harmful gender stereotypes," Amb. The Women's Voice and Leadership Nigeria Project aligned with the Federal Government of Nigeria's commitment to gender equality as encapsulated in the Nigeria's Strategic Roadmap on Plummeting Ending Violence Against Women and Girls and other relevant policies. UN AGENDA 2030: *SDG NATIONAL COUNCIL LAUDS NAFDAC OVER WAR ON FAKE DRUG DEALERS* The Presidency, SDG National Students Council, Office Of the Senior Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on Students Engagement, has commended the proactive measures being taken by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to tackle the menace of fake drugs and the proliferation of substandard drugs within Nigeria which poses a serious threat to the health of the Nigerian population and attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). *Amb. Timothy Nwachukwu, The National Coordinator, SDG National Students Council, while referencing the recent raid by NAFDAC officials on suspected fake drug outlets in Lagos, Abia, Anambra and other parts of the country, which led to the seizure of huge quantities of substandard and adulterated drugs worth billions of naira, highlighted NAFDAC's crucial role in achieving Agenda 2030's Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3): Good Health and Well-being noting that the fight against counterfeit pharmaceuticals directly impacts the goal's targets of reducing premature mortality from non-communicable diseases and ensuring access to quality healthcare services.* Nwachukwu emphasized that NAFDAC's work is not just about regulatory compliance, but a critical component of building a healthier and more resilient nation, directly contributing to the overall success of the SDGs in Nigeria. He described the development as a major victory in the quest to rid Nigeria of the menace of fake drugs, which has claimed many lives over the years. "This renewed fight against fake drugs is in line with the SDG target on Good Health and Wellbeing for all Nigerians", he emphasized. "Fake drugs are major impediments to achieving that goal and NAFDAC's efforts are a boost to what we are doing". Nwachukwu also lauded the collaboration between NAFDAC and other relevant agencies in the fight against the illicit drug trade. He emphasized that the war against counterfeit and substandard products is a collective responsibility that requires the active involvement of all stakeholders. He urged other relevant agencies to borrow a leaf from NAFDAC's efforts. "This level of commitment is needed across board to achieve the SDGs", he declared. "NAFDAC has shown that with the right political will, the SDGs are achievable". He assured that the SDG National Students Council will continue to support NAFDAC in its efforts, saying "we will mobilize stakeholders and resources to strengthen their hand. Amb. A consignment of five 40-foot shipping containers full of books was delivered to the Gambia. Sir Emeka Offor in partnership with the American non-governmental organization, Books For Africa (BFA), Sir Emeka embarked on an educational project bringing over 1 million books, computers, and school supplies to Nigeria and other West African nations. Through his nonprofit, the Sir Emeka Offor Foundation (SEOF), Offor has become BFA’s most important partner in Africa. By the conclusion of this ambitious $14 million dollar book project, his foundation will be the largest private donor of books on the Continent. Furthermore, Sir Emeka Offor Foundation endowed a N50 million for the Faculty of Social Sciences at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. UNICAL FEES HIKE: PRESIDENTIAL AIDE URGE UNICAL VC TO SHUN INCREMENT OF TUITION FEES. *Appeals For Calm, *To meet University Management.* The Senior Special Assistant To President Tinubu on Students Engagement, Hon. Sunday Asefon, has called on the Management of the University of Calabar to rescind it's decision to hike the tuition fees payable by the students but rather engage with student Leaders and relevant Stakeholders to forestall breakdown of law and order in the University. Hon. Asefon made this call in Abuja while reacting to the news report that Students of the University of Calabar ( UNICAL) were protesting against the hike of tuition fee by the University Management. He stated that the increase of tuition fees by the University authority was a contravention of the directive given by President Tinubu to the management of Tertiary institutions across the country. Hon. Asefon stated that President Tinubu had earlier directed the authorities in all Federal Institutions of higher learning to halt arbitrary increase in sundry fees payable and where possible defer further increase so that parents and students don’t face too many difficulties. He further posited that in demonstration of the commitment of Mr. President to revamp the educational sector, the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, while speaking at the 75th Founder’s Day ceremony of the University of Ibadan had cancelled the 40 per cent deduction of the Internally Generated Revenues of federal universities, describing the policy implementation as “ill-timed”. Hon. Asefon called on the University Management to abide by the directive of Mr. president while negotiations continues. He further appealed to the students to remain calm and avoid wanton destruction of school properties under the guise of protest. He assured that He will lead Students Stakeholders and Leaders to meet with the University Management over the hike. Meanwhile, In the statement by the University’s PRO, Mr Effiong Eyo, the upward review of the tuition fees was taken at an emergency meeting of the University Senate on Friday. The release stated that the implementation of the upward review takes effect from the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions. Findings showed that with the increase fresher’s, returning students and the final year students for the non science courses are expected to pay N111,000, N91,500 and N114,000 respectively. They are also required to pay N36,500, N21,500 and N21,500 respectively as third parties dues. In the same vein students for the science courses was increased to N155,000, N125,000 and N148,000 respectively for fresher’s, returning students and final year students.
