A popular businessman in Ogoja, northern Cross River State, southsouth Nigeria, has been arrested for allegedly raping a two-year old girl (name withheld).

The man, Mr. James Eze, was detained by the police after he was arrested for allegedly having carnal knowledge of the child.

Eze, who owns a well known pharmacy, Edoh Pharmacy located on I, Mission Road, Igoli Ogoja, allegedly lured the girl into his office where he defiled her and thereafter gave her N25 to buy sweets.

Eze was alleged to have defiled the girl for ritual purposes as he “collected the blood that gushed from the girl’s private part with a white handkerchief. The handkerchief is now with the police,”

Codelia, a resident of the area who said she was an eye witness told newsmen. Mrs. Josephine Ibeh, the mother of the victim who owns a beer parlour at the back of the building where Edoh Pharmacy is located, said her daughter came back and told her that blood was coming out of her private part and on close examination she realised that she had been defiled.

“I saw that her private part had wound and was bleeding profusely and when I asked her what happened, she told me that Edoh put his penis inside her,” Ibeh said.

Mrs. Ibeh said the girl’s private part was severely damaged by the suspect and when she confronted him, he gave her money to pacify her.

“When I confronted Edoh, he brought out N50,000 and told me to take the girl to the hospital, saying that it was the devil that pushed him to do it,” she said as tears streamed down her cheeks.

Mrs. Eze said the matter was reported to the police at the Divisional Headquarters in Ogoja and the man was arrested while the girl was taken to the General Hospital Ogoja where she was stitched.

A doctor at the hospital, who pleaded anonymity, told newsmen that the girl had “four stitches as the tear was deep and the lacerations caused by the forced entry wide.”

A source at the Divisional Police Headquarters confirmed that Edoh is in their custody and may not be given bail immediately going by the inflamed passion in the town over the act.

“We suspect ritual purpose for the man’s act because that man is rich enough to have any woman of his choice in this town. The white handkerchief the man used to collect the blood is in our custody,” the police source said.

The matter, the source added, would soon be transferred to the state police Command Headquarters in Calabar.

A gang of armed robbers on Sunday night killed two policemen and two others in a deadly attack around World Oil Filling Station at Ibafo, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Witnesses said the robbers, numbering about 15, came in jeeps. On arrival, one of them shot a plain-clothed policeman straightaway.

The gunmen it was learnt engaged some policemen and vigilance group members at the filling station in a gun duel, shooting sporadically in a bid to crush the resistance and scare away people.

As a result, bullets flew round, hitting an unspecified number of people. Bizarrely, no reinforcement came from Ibafo Police Station, located less than a kilometre away from the scene.

Presently, the walls of the deserted filling station were riddled with bullet holes as hundreds of spent bullet littered the environment; an evidence of a horrific battle.

Only few weeks ago, robbers attacked Jimken Filling Station, a few metres away from this latest attack site, killing a customer.

The rate of robbery operations has increased nationwide in the past few months.

No fewer than six people have been reported dead and over 60 hospitalized in Amegu village, Ede-Oballa in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State following an alleged poisoning of pork meat they took at a funeral ceremony.

According to reports from Ede-Oballa, more than 60 guests developed severe stomach problems after the funereal ceremony, prompting their immediate hospitalization. Investigation by Sunday Sun showed that all the popular hospitals in the university town of Nsukka including the Catholic Mission- owned Bishop Shanahan have been flooded with the victims who were said to be in critical conditions. A woman was said to be the first casualty of the meat poisoning followed by three girls while it was feared that two others who are not natives of the community also died.

It was gathered that a pig farmer who sold the infected animal to a woman (name withheld) who hosted the funeral, was in police net. Hospital sources expressed apprehension over the survival of the victims, saying they ought to have been rushed to the hospital same night. “In a situation like this, victims should be rushed to the hospital promptly for early stomach wash”, said a hospital source. The source however said frantic efforts are being made to save the lives of the victims Another reliable source suspected that guests at the funeral might have been served the meat of a dead pig injected by a veterinary doctor.

The source said the owner of the pig (name withheld) had lied to the woman that the pig fell into a ditch. Apparently due to the intimidating size of the pig and its relative cheapness, the woman quickly entered a bargain and bought the meat not knowing it was sick and had been treated recently by a veterinary doctor who also advised that in the event of its death, the animal should be buried. A source quoted the doctor who has been quizzed by the police as saying that he advised the pig farmer to bury the animal if it died within three weeks of the injection.

The tragic incident has caused tension in Nsukka zone where pigs are used at funeral ceremonies as an imperative and status symbol. It was gathered that since the incident, guests at burial ceremonies in the area have been avoiding pork. This has created problems for pig farmers who have lost patronage due to the tragedy.

Our reporter could not reach the veterinary doctor at the time of filing this report. A senior police officer attached to the Nsukka Urban Police Command said that some of the guests and the pig farmer were helping the police in their investigation.

Five persons were feared dead on Saturday in the Akenfa suburb of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State when canoes transporting passengers capsized, eyewitnesses said.

Witnesses told the News Agency of Nigeria in Yenagoa that the tragedy occurred when the two canoes, transporting persons from Akenfa III to Akenfa I, capsized on the Epie Creek at about 8a.m.
NAN reports that the accident is one of the major disasters recorded due to the ravaging flood in the state in the past three weeks.

Witnesses said the two canoes collided close to where they were supposed to have berthed at Akenfa I due to panic by the passengers.

NAN learnt that the five persons, who had yet to be rescued from the creek, included a woman with a baby strapped on her back.

A NAN correspondent who visited the scene reports that a large crowd was seen at bank of the Epie Creek at Akenfa III, the take-off point, and Akenfa I, the destination.

Meanwhile some officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission who said they had received a distress call, added that the Nigerian Navy had been notified due to the commission’s handicap.

Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Fidelis Odunna, who confirmed the incident, however, said that three persons and the driver of one of the canoes, were missing. [url=

LOKOJA – IF only, 13-year old Yetunde, Racheal Samuel had known what fate had in store for her on 5TH October, she would have changed her mind about staying home and followed her family to the wedding of the day. But life played a fast one on her and kept her in the dark about the evil that lurked at the corner . She had no premonition whatsoever, that on that particular day, she would bid the world goodbye in a gruesome manner.

On that day, the serene town of Isanlu, headquarters of Yagba – East Local Government of Kogi State was thrown into tumoil following the gruesome murder of Yetunde, whose body was deposited inside a medium size freezer after being strangled to death by yet to be identified killers.

Yetunde Rachael Samuel, a JSS 2 student of Oluyori Comprehensive College, Isanlu was killed in the night of October 5th and neatly deposited inside a medium size freezer to create impression that she fell into the freezer and was subsequently jamlocked and frozen to death without any body knowing; which shows that her death was pre-planned and carried out with an ulterior motive.

What has remained a mystery is who actually murdered her and for what. Aside that, the question on the lips of people is why was she the only one left in the house that particular day and why she was hurriedly buried in the cover of the night? Why did the parents or the guardians fail to report her mysterious death to the police before she was committed to mother earth? Only the police or perhaps, the late Yetunde herself could actually reveal who killed her and how she died.

The perpetrators of the henious crime would have gotten away with it if the police had not gotten wind of it. Maybe Yetunde’s blood is seeking for justice as no one knows how the Police heard about it.

The state commissioner of Police, Alh Mohammed Musa Katsina who got wind of the dastardly act, suspected foul play, arrested the guardians of the girl and ordered that the corpse be exhumed for a thorough autopsy to confirm whether the girl actually jumped inside the freezer and got frozen or she was killed.

It was a hectic time for our correspondent and detectives led by the deputy commissioner of police, Alh Zannah Mohammed who travelled to the community with a pathologist from Federal Medical Centre to exhume the decompsing corpse for autopsy.

The guardian of the girl who is at the centre of the mysterious death, Mrs Deborah Motunrayo Jaiyeoba claimed that she left the girl who was the daughter of her younger sister at home that Saturday morning for a marriage ceremony along with all her children.

According to her, when she got back from the wedding ceremony and did not see Yetunde, she thought she had gone to play. She said she was thirsty and raced to the deep freezer to get a satchet of water to quench her thirst when she suddenly discovered that Yetunde was stone dead in the freezer and she immediately raised alarm.

Mrs jaiyeoba, a sanitary inspector at the local government claimed Yetunde wanted to clean the deep freezer in her small retail shop when she fell into the deep freezer and must have frozen to death.

Saturday Vanguard also gathered that the father of the desceased was said to have felt indiferrent about the death of her daughter as he hurriedly consented that she should be buried immediately.

Saturday Vanguard’s investigation revealed that Yetunde’s mother was impregnated at the age of 17 while she was still in secondary school; and after delivery , decided to drop Yetunde at the age of two with her sister and headed to Ilorin for greener pasture where she later got married. However, the autopsy carried out revealed that the late girl was actually killed; maybe, for rituals.

Preliminary doctor’s report confirmed that the girl died as result of neorogenic shock secondary to multiple skeletal injuries most likely sustained from blunt force trauma .

The doctor’s report also said two of the girl’s teeth were removed with some vital parts while the entire head region was battered with blunt instrument.

Speaking with Saturday Vanguard, the State Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Kastina said the whole episode was a case of culpable homicide. He said the innocent girl was brutally murdered but expressed shock that the biological father of the girl did not show concern but instead, he brought a letter to his office along with somebody who claimed to be a judicial officer that the case be withdrawn.

The CP said when he interrogated the father, he could not even read nor comprehend the contents of the letter which gave suspicion that some people were behind the murder. He therefore called on members of the public to be more vigilant with their children and to know who they give their children to for upkeeping but vowed to pursue the case to a logical conclusion .

If truly Yetunde’s guardian was behind the gruesome murder, why and what could be the reason behind it after sucessefully nuturing her for the past 13 years? What does she stand to gain? All these questions seem unanswarable as the peoples wait patiently for the police to unravel the case and make their submission known on time.

Those arrested along with the 43 year- old Mrs Jaiyeoba Deborah who was the guardian are three of her children namely: Jaiyeoba Titilayo, 20 years old; Tunmininu Jaiyeoba 23 years old and Jaiyeoba Femi 18 years old. Others are Shade Jimoh, Chief J I Owolabi, Raphael Owolabi, Raphael Abiodun and Tolulope Sunday.

A Chinese nationale who is an engineer with CGC construction firm handling the dualization of Lagos street and three others were yesterday shot dead in separate attacks by gunmen in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital. This brings to two Chinese nationals that were shot dead in Maiduguri, the other one was shot dead in Gubio council area two weeks ago.

The incident is coming barely 24 hours when some gunmen suspected to be terrorists attacked Potiskum town on Thursday which led to the killing of one policeman including 10 others after the multiple explosion and shootings between terrorists and men of the Joint Task Force (JTF) where scores were killed while others sustained various degree of injuries.

One of the 60 houses razed down in the mayhem.

Also at about 11am, there was an exchange of gun fire on Thursday around 505 Abbagana Terab Housing Estate in Ruwan Zafi along Maiduguri- Gamboru Ngala road between men of the JTF and some gunmen which led to the killing of over six people whose identities could not be ascertained as at the time of going to Press, while two soldiers sustained gunshot injuries, even as an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) targeted at the JTF personnel exploded in Hausari ward a minutes after Juma’at prayer.

Although it will not be officially confirmed on whether their is a casualty after the blast which later followed with sporadic gunshots in some nearby wards of Gwange, Shehuri, Post office and Bullabulin of Maiduguri metropolis, an eye witness who does not want his name mentioned in the print said he saw one of the JTF patrol vehicle with over 5 dead bodies being conveyed to an undisclosed hospital.

In a separate attack, some gunmen suspected to be terrorists attacked EYN Church (Church of Brethren in Nigeria) in Atagara village of Gwoza council area of Borno. State, killing two people and set the entire church ablaze.

The killing of the Chinese nationals our Correspondent gathered took place at about 10am when the gunmen trailed him and shot him dead at his duty post in Gidan Madara Lagos street.

Our Correspondent who visited the area along Lagos street saw that all the construction equipement and heavy duty machines along the street have been evacuated to their camp (CGC Camp) along Damaturu- Maiduguri road.

Confirming the killing of the Lagos street construction engineer, the Information Officer, Borno state Ministry of Works and Transport, Alhaji Babakura Bukar told newsmen that one of the Chinese Construction workers handling the busy Lagos street was shot dead by suspected gunmen.

He said, the remains of the Chinese national have been deposited at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital mortuary.

Also, Confirming the separate attacks and killings in Potiskum town of Yobe state, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Patrick Egbunewe said that some suspected Boko Haram sect members again launched an attack on Potiskum town at about 4pm on Thursday.

Egbunewe however did not give further details on whether there was a casualty recorded in the second attack.
Likewise, a JTF source in Maiduguri told our Correspondent on phone that at about 1050 hours behind 505 Housing Estate , some suspected Boko Haram sect attacked one of the JTF post and injured two soldiers.
He said the JTF personnel immediately responded by repelling the attack which led to the killing of two of the suspected gunmen and the recovery two AK 47 rifles.

In another incident, the source added that at about 11:15 hours yesterday at Atagara village in Gwoza council area, some suspected terrorists drove to the area in gulf saloon car and attacked EYN Church and burnt it, before they killed two persons and inflicted gunshot injuries on two other persons.
