Protesters react to Mubarak speech

Hosni Mubarak has decided to step down as president of Egypt.

Vice-President Omar Suleiman made the announcement in a brief statement on state TV.

It came as thousands massed in Cairo and other Egyptian cities for an 18th day of protest to demand Mr Mubarak's resignation.

Protesters responded by cheering, waving flags, embracing and sounding car horns. "The people have brought down the regime," they chanted.

Mr Suleiman said Mr Mubarak had handed power to the high command of the armed forces.

"In the name of God the merciful, the compassionate, citizens, during these very difficult circumstances Egypt is going through, President Hosni Mubarak has decided to step down from the office of president of the republic and has charged the high council of the armed forces to administer the affairs of the country," he said.

"May God help everybody."

That guy is crazy i swear, i really don't understand the armies role at this point, they inferred earlier on that they are likely to be taking control
There is no way he is going to resign and allow the Muslim brotherhood to take over the government. Egypt is a very strategic entity among the so called moderates in the middle-east and there is no way Saudi will just allow them to fall into the wrong hands. After Egypt then expect other moderates to fall as well but he is going to stay and ensures that a fellow moderate takes over from him. I am suspecting that Suleiman will be the president because the treaty with Israel must be kept by the next government or a war might be looming very soon. Turkey a once friendly nation is already going hostile and having Egypt going the same route will be a very big no to Israel and Saudi Arabia.

That is the way my brother. There is no point. Well if you guys feel it is a good way to go, good. But I differ in such thinking. University Education is meant to be strategic. In India, the govt developed there technical schools and focus on IT and software development, Japan did similar things back home. China did the same. They sent their best brains to USA and UK to learn what work and they return home to transfer ideas. The issue is most of the work place really do not need graduates. It is poor standard of education that made them insist a graduate yet they have to be trained and retrained. Developing basic education is not as expensive as University and it will do us better advantage. Nigerian leaders love to be seen to be doing something but we really waste a lot of money on things that wont help us in anyway. That is my argument
I fully understand your point and i agree with them, we are on the same track trust me. I also want to see radical changes in our education system and the development path the government is trying to take. I know what china and the other countries have done but the most surprising to me has been india because some decades or years ago we were on the same level. They have really left us far behind now and even china is trying to incorporate their model by moving away from just mostly manufacturing and exporting. They are moving into the research, development and service sector.

What i found to be very interesting about these  countries ( singapore, china, india etc ) is that  they have a very purposeful government and a relatively calm polity. These cannot be said about nigeria because except the polity is stable there is no way we are going to fix the education sector or any other strategic sector. To me education development goes hand in hand with a good economy, our economy is in shambles and there is no way we can move forward without the economy. We cannot train the needed graduate as well that will not get the needed support or funding to startup something reasonable. So many foreign expatriates are filling up positions that should have been left for Nigerian graduates but honestly we do not have these exparts in most cases.

I really don't like putting too much blame on the president. We have the universities and ministry of education that should have been the driving force towards these changes but they have not been doing enough. The president needs support from exparts and you also know that every move in these country has to deal with politics and satisfying some interest. You cannot fix this country or education system without meeting trouble on the way, try to even fix it and you will meet corruption. My point is that we need to  fix a lot of things before we can see changes or impacts on the little efforts we have been putting in these strategic sectors like education, power etc.

Thank God it was settled in a matured way . . . . . now back to the topic and questions at hand.

It is highly necessarily to build more higher institutions in the case of Nigeria because the present capacity is not adequate enough. The strategic importance should be pushed forward for now and fixing the education system the way we wished is not going to be an easy task.

How can it be binding when it is not constitutional?
We already have the federal character and quota system there so the implementation is left to those in charge. There are always careful consideration before appointing ministers, the senate president has always been from the southeast since we came back to democracy and thats the zoning system at work there. It is unwritten but very much acknowledged by everyone irrespective of your party affiliations.

The club's official website, has confirmed that Josep Guardiola, our amiable coach, has agreed on a one-year contract extension till June 30,2012.
Guyz, why do u think he keeps signing in bits? Why does he not go ahead and sign g long term contract, running into years?Does it mean he has his own reservations with the management ? Is he protecting his own integrity and authority? These and other questions, beggars for answers. Thank u guys, as u brainstorm on those.
What kind of issues could that be? . . except you guys are very good in concealing your internal problems because at madrid it is always in the open. So i do not really agree with that, the new president wants to save some cost and reduce the clubs debt but they have not starved him of money to buy players. Does he want more control over the selling of players as well ( especially non spanish as he would not mind if alves leaves the club ) or maybe he wants the club to quickly renew the contracts of these players?. He should not allow this little success to cloud his brain and understand that managing a club is not easy and he should surely not expect the management to meet all his needs. They are in business to make profits and as managers with varying stake in the day to day operations, they will not be taking instructions from a mere disposable coach.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: FC Barcelona Fan Thread: "Més Que Un Club" by Pharoh: 8:52pm On Feb 08, 2011
Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has agreed to a one-year contract extension and will remain with the club until the end of the 2011-12 season.

The Spanish champions revealed the news on their official website on Tuesday evening, adding that the deal will be officially signed in the next few days.

"FC Barcelona announce that they have reached an agreement with Josep Guardiola to renew his contract with the club for another season, until the 30th of June 2012," read a statement.

"The signing of the contract will take place in the next few days."

The 40-year-old's current deal was due to expire at the end of this season and he had been linked with coaching jobs abroad, with English giants Manchester United reportedly eyeing him as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor.

Guardiola was appointed the Blaugrana's coach in 2008 and has worked wonders with the Catalan club, winning two successive Spanish Primera Division titles, the Champions League and the Club World Cup among other triumphs.
Nah which kind shakara be this self? . . he should sign something like 3 to 5 years contract and forget this obsession to coach abroad or succed alex ferguson. So he wants to go to manchester and stay there for how many years instead of staying in barca for 5 or maybe 10 years. I really have a strong feeling that he might not perform well abroad ( he did not do much even as a player ). Most spanish coaches do not have great success abroad with teams that do not play the spanish tip tap. Juande ramos shined little bit with spurs and that was it. Benitez also with liverpool for about 2 years and that was it.

He should stay in barca for up to 5 or 10 years and i would love him to takeover from debosky someday in the future or after some other coach. ( He is very fit to be the spanish national team coach after gaining some experience). He should only go abroad to gain experience if he wants to and not some useless ambition, If he fails people will not remember his past exploits. He should take a cue from ancellotti, benitez, rikcard and even mourinho that is feeling the heat and abuse even though he had lots of support when he was winning with chelsea and Inter milan.

How is it a lie?. . . what exactly is the lie there? . . Well am still looking for more credible sources to backup this news.

It is good if we can go back to the normal five year economic plan that was truncated by the military as it will surely help us in having a focused development path instead of a new president undoing the work of the previous administration. China and other countries implements this kind of economic policies so it will be very good for us as well.
Politics › Good News - As Nigerian Government Eyes Five Year Economic Plan. by Pharoh(op): 6:58pm On Feb 08, 2011
APA – Lagos (Nigeria) Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan said on Monday that his administration will formulate a five-year economic development plan "that will turn Nigeria’s economy for the better’’, adding that the plan would reduce any form of crisis that might arise between the executive and legislature over budget presentation and implementation.

Jonathan told the Emir of Lafia (traditional ruler), Alhaji Isa Mustapha, when he called on him on Monday in Lafia in northern Nigeria that the five-year economic plan would be developed along with the legislature, so that “together we will work towards its smooth implementation for the progress and development of our country’’.

Jonathan is the Nasarawa State capital to launch his presidential campaign for the April polls.

He said that his administration would give special priority to farmers “where we intend to provide not only potable drinking water to the farming communities but also adequate water for irrigation”.

"We will surely not fail Nigerians because failing Nigerians means failing God who made it possible for us to emerge with me as president and Mr. Namadi Sambo as my vice,” he promised.

Goodluck urged Nigerians to avoid crises, saying they "have direct negative impact on our economy”.

Welcoming the presidential campaign team, the traditional ruler expressed confidence in the ability of the President to develop the nation.

"We in Nasarawa state have since declared for you in whom we have hope,’’ he said.

"Real Sociedad are playing very well and happen to be one of my favourite teams"
Laura Navas / Translation by Michael J. O'Donnell

Jose Mourinho talked about tomorrow's match against Real Sociedad, Cristiano Ronaldo and his future at the Club, amongst other things, in this afternoon's press conference.

"We must forget about the Copa. It would be silly to think about it now. We will play the final when the time comes. We must now focus on La Liga and the Champions League."

"Real Sociedad are playing very well and we'll have to watch out because they happen to be one of my favourite teams. Our first leg encounter against them was complicated because they played very well against us, not because we played badly. They are a difficult team to beat."

"The favourite team to win La Liga is the side that leads the table, but we still have mathematical chances to win. We'll have to continue winning games and doing our job."

"We have the same chances to win the Champions League as the other 15 teams that remain in the competition. It is drawing nearer and we are preparing for it because we'll have to be in optimum form to play the knockout stage. It's as important for Real Madrid to breach the Last 16 barrier as it was for them to reach the Copa del Rey final. The moment of truth will arrive at the end of February when we play in the Champions League again. That competition is of special significance to us."

"I haven't so far seen a team as fit as us at the end of each game, but a team can be fit and also feel minor fatigue. We put pressure on ourselves. I want to win every game. I don't like it when we don't win and fail to play well. I don't care about the point difference between us and our main opponent."

"We are working and improving on a structural and functional level, heading in a direction I like very much. I believe this will help make the Club powerful from a sports viewpoint, and allow it to win titles once more. My decisions go hand in hand with the capacity I have to do my job the best way I possibly can, and I am currently happy with the situation I'm in."

"Cristiano has scored 32 goals this season. His numbers are truly dramatic, tallying one strike every two games, having an enormous amount of playing time, He only missed the Copa match against Levante, he's never been suspended or injured, he's even played sick, I believe the season would continue to be fantastic for him even if he didn't score any more goals. His daddy always defends him."

"Kaka feels very well, but some sensations are lost over time and need time to get back to you. Arbeloa takes football seriously. He is aware of his quality and of his small defects. He doesn't want to play beyond his possibilities. He never gives a 10/10 performance, but he also never earns a 6/10. Her always earns a 7, 8 or 9. I like the type of player he is very much."

"Benzema is doing much better. He didn't score in our last match, but the Bernabeu applauded his efforts nevertheless. This means the fans believe he is playing very well. His physical and psychological efforts in the game are very high. He always tries to help his team-mates and to score."

The Portuguese forward was congratulated by his team-mates and wishes to become the Madridista to score 50 goals in the fewest league games tomorrow
Realmadrid.com / Translation by Michael J. O'Donnell

Cristiano Ronaldo turns 26 years old today and wishes to celebrate tomorrow by becoming the Madridista to score 50 goals in the fewest league games.

Ronaldo has been on the team one and a half years, and continues to dazzle the world with his ease for breaking records. Cristiano has become the team's lead forward ever since he made his debut against Deportivo on 28 August 2009. He made the 2010 FIFA World XI and currently leads the Pichihi Trophy ranking with 22 strikes netted in 21 games. By scoring two goals against Real Sociedad tomorrow, Ronaldo would become the Madridista to tally 50 strikes in the fewest league games, overtaking legendary Madridista Puskas, who did it in 54 encounters.

Cristiano is a true football veteran despite his young age. He was born in Portuguese city Madeira in 1985 and started to play football in small local club Andorinha. He joined Sporting Lisboa when he was 11, eventually making his debut with the first team in 2001.

The player caught the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson, who signed him for Manchester United, with whom he became the best player in the world and won the Ballon d'Or, the FIFA World Player, the Golden Boot and the FIFPro World Player awards in 2008.

Ronaldo attended training this morning just like any other day. He joked around with his team-mates, especially with Marcelo, one of his best friends on the squad. Everyone wished him the very best of birthdays.

The Whites have won 44 of 63 matches played at home against the Txuri-urdin
Realmadrid.com

Real Madrid and Real Sociedad are two heavyweights of Spain's Primera Division. The former has played in all 80 editions of La Liga, while the Basque side has participated in 64. Of the 63 prior visits by the Txuri-urdin to the Spanish capital, Real Madrid have won 44 times, drawn 15 and lost only three. The Madridistas have also outscored their Basque counterparts 156-52.

Looking only at the last ten matches played at the Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid have won on six occasions, drawn three times and lost once, while outscoring Real Sociedad 19-10.

The most recent visit dates back to 2006/07, when Madrid won 2-0 and eventually raised the league trophy. Earlier this season, Real Madrid won 1-2 at Anoeta with goals by Di Maria and Pepe.

Certainly they have improved. . .it is clear to see. IMO winning ANY of the available titles will galvanise them into a better team next season. No doubt about that.
A double will be an OVER-DRIVE!  cheesy
They have improved seriously and we have almost achieved one of the goals set for this season by reaching the copa dey real final. It is time to focus on one of the  other goal which is to get past lyon/ the second round champions league stage and see what goes on from there. Then we have to focus back on the third objective which is to improve on our league performances, we last won it in 2008 and have always been second in recent years. So lets see what comes out from all of these and then we move in to the next phase by next season which is to properly restructure/refocus the total football strategies and management at the club. We will get there  . . . .Hala Madrid.

Mourinho: "I am very happy with the way the team has grown"

Following Real Madrid's 2-0 second leg win in the Copa del Rey semifinal, Jose Mourinho expressed his thoughts on the match and what is to come.

"It took us a lot to get to this final, and because of the difficulty of our path to reach it, I truly believe we deserve it. He played nine straight matches in January and we played well in all of them."
We have taken this competition very seriously since the first match because we want to return this club to a prestigious place in it. The players played very hard to get here. We can't wait to play and win the final. There are no favorites in finals. History says so. Many times the least likely team is the one who walks away with the title."

"It's a lot easier to be a reporter than a coach. A coach is asked to rotate his players, but if they don't work then he takes the blame. If he doesn't, the team gets tired and it's also his fault. It's a lot easier to comment than it is to say. I cannot expect young or injured players to be on the top of their game with a simple "click." I also have players who I simply have a lot of trouble resting because of how important they are to me and the team."
"Adebayor saw his dream come true. He scored the first ball he touched at home, and it wasn't easy. It's good for him and his confidence. It's fantastic for the confidence of any footballer who scores in his first match in the Bernabeu."

"Benzema played a great match. He moved well, he lost his markers, he passed well, Cristiano, once again, worked for the team. He is the player he is. He didn't score, but he worked hard for his teammates and he will be right there again come Sunday. We have two very good forwards, and we hope that we get Higuain back for the end of the season. We also want Morata here starting on day one next season. He is doing what he needs to be doing with Castilla."

No other team has as many final appearances as the Whites
Real Madrid will play in their 37th Copa del Rey final after eliminating Sevilla in the semifinals. No other team has as many appearances in the final, which the Whites have won 17 times. Seven years after their last appearance, Real Madrid will lock horns with Barcelona on 20 April.
Fun facts:
The Whites now have the opportunity to win their 18th Copa del Rey title; a trophy they haven't lifted since 1993.

The two finalists Real Madrid has faced most frequently are Athletic Club Bilbao (cool and Barcelona (5).

Nine times have Real Madrid won the Copa in Madrid. In Barcelona, Real Madrid won the title in three of the eight finals played there, while in Mestalla the Whites have won two of the four finals on Valencian soil.
Jorge Valdano expressed his satisfaction after seeing Real Madrid defeat Sevilla 2-0 to earn a spot in the Copa del Rey final.
Casillas: "The final will be one of the prettiest matches of the year, but we must first focus on La Liga and the Champions League"

Iker Casillas will be play in his third Copa del Rey final come 20 April. The Madridista captain commented on Wednesday's semifinal match and what it means to him.

"We are very happy because we will be playing in one of the prettiest matches of the year. This was one of our goals when the season began and we have made it. Now we must see if we are lucky enough to win it. At least we will be there. I have lost two Copa finals and hope the third time is a charm."

Nine current players are Cup winners

Mourinho has also won the competition three times in three different countries

Real Madrid has nine domestic Cup champions on its roster heading into the 20 April final against Barcelona. But the most successful Cup participant has been Jose Mourinho, who has already won the competition in Portugal, England and Italy.

Raul Albiol is the only Madridista to have won the Copa del Rey. The then Valencia player defeated Granero's Getafe in 2008.

Five Madridistas have won England's FA Cup. Cristiano Ronaldo achieved glory in 2004 with ManU, Xabi Alonso and Dudek in 2006 with Liverpool, Lass with both Chelsea and Portsmouth and Carvalho, who whon three FA Cups with Chelsea after winning the Taça de Portugal in 2003.

Pepe won the Taça three years after Carvalho, Benzema lifted the French Cup in 2008 with Lyon and, most recently, Ozil earned the DFB Pokal in 2009 with Werder Bremen.
