Politics › Why I Stopped Visiting Obasanjo In Aso Villa – Soyinka by pheesayor(op): 7:03pm On Mar 27, 2010 |
Nobel laureate and social activist, Prof. Wole Soyinka, paid a surprise visit to the Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, on Friday at the Presidential Villa.
After the closed-door meeting with the Acting President, Soyinka told newsmen that he was at the Aso Rock for the ”unfinished business of the ill-executed amnesty programme,” as well as the reform of the country‘s electoral system.
He said, ”As you can imagine, what was uppermost on my mind was what was happening in the oil producing region. The issue of the amnesty, the unfinished business and ill-executed amnesty programme which is a brilliant idea, but as I said to his predecessor, the person he is acting for, Yar‘Adua, I hope he will remember I did have a meeting with him, where we had a one-on-one, in addition with meeting him with the rest of the team.
”So it is a continuation of my dialogue with the presidency over the Niger Delta region. So those are the overriding things (discussed).”
Soyinka, a supporter of the Save Nigeria Group, which is still protesting the unconstitutional issues surrounding President Umaru Yar‘Adua‘s ill-health, expressed confidence in Jonathan‘s commitment to the success of the amnesty programme.
On the electoral reform, he said, ”We also discussed electoral reforms, which he (Jonathan) is a very clear supporter; he is very keen a believer in it. I got very good vibrations from him.
”Unfortunately, one cannot transmit the same vibrations from the members of the House of Representatives and the Senate, many of whose members are unelected anyway, and would like to leave things as they are because they hope to benefit from this illegitimacy and the whole corruption of the electoral system.”
Journalists observed that it was unusual for Soyinka to visit a sitting President in Aso Rock.
In response, the Nobel Laureate disclosed that he used to visit former President, Olusegun Obasanjo in the Presidential Villa until he became disappointed in the retired General.
”Well, you know, people tend to forget that presidents are human beings, first of all, and they have relationships. I used to visit Obasanjo, at least when I thought there was something in him to benefit the nation. When I found there is nothing, I stopped. So it is not unusual for me to visit presidents,” he said.
Pressed to give further insights into their discussion, Soyinka said, ”I don‘t think one should ever talk of conclusions, you just exchange ideas, and that is exactly what we did.
”He told me of the motions that he has been making to revitalise the (amnesty) programme. I don‘t even like to use the word amnesty programme, I never liked it, really.”
Soyinka went ahead to recommend a recipe for the success of the amnesty programme. ”Let me begin by saying that it (amnesty programme) was a marvellous initiative; it was a great initiative on the part of Yar‘Adua, no doubt about that, but it was ill-organised, ill-thought out.”
Soyinka said his role as a member of the SNG did not feature in his discussions with Jonathan. He said, ”In fact we never mentioned Save Nigeria Group, we didn‘t. You see, we like to compartmentalise things as much as possible; he (Jonathan) has his presidential responsibilities, I have my responsibilities to the civil society, of which Save Nigeria Group happens to be one, and the Citizens Forum, which I am the head, is also another.”
Asked to comment on the ministerial list sent to the Senate, Soyinka admitted that he congratulated Jonathan for dissolving the cabinet, but added that he could not comment on the nominees because he was not familiar with most of them.
After addressing journalists, Soyinka met briefly with his daughter, Mrs. Moremi Soyinka-Onijala, a Senior Special Assistant in the State House, before departing the Presidential Villa. Soyinka-Onijala was appointed by former President, Olusegun Obasanjo. http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art20100327923250 |

May God be with us all. God bless you for this. I thot I had outgrown asthma but this dust atmosphere gave me an attack, I was shocked. abdurrazaq: Saying he was a nobody doesn't mean he doesn't have a video out then, but the major hit for Modenine came when he dropped CRY, that's when he became somebody in the industry either to the 'heads' or 'non-heads'. To those who followed him well would have known before that track but not as enough as they know the likes of Dr. Fresh (now Fresh) on the same joint Maybe you want us to go "back in time" which I wont mind. Before cry, there was elbow room, that aside. That video at that time wouldnt have been complete without modenine. I was always with my walkman then listening to the radio and modenine got regular airplay esp from rythm , raypower and sometimes star fm. I still disagree with you. #It'z Pheesayor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

abdurrazaq: The last time I saw Jafar was on Da New Live Beats a couple of years ago. He sais that he had to go back to school. Can't just forget his track which he featured Ruggedman - Feel it or something close to that produced by Jos Kenny The list of the rappers of that era should include B.B - that fat girl (sorry 4 my description) though, I still saw her at a show organised by Tetmosol few years back for ladies in the industry.
@Post! OJB was just like a mentor to the rappers you outlined maybe due to his age, being a producer, and other things but, I don't think he wouldn't have done more than what he did if he's capable. Even OJB himself is not being respected enough as a producer, for someone who was instrumental to most of 2face debut solo album, Shitta Anthem, Shake something, etc
Hoping they all make it back because they really need to harvest where they've sown.
Talking of the LIVING IT UP Song, We are left with just Modenine (who was a nobody during that time), Ruggedman (trying hard to hang on), Basketmouth (as a comedian though). That will always remain a classic in the history of Nigerian Hip Hop I disgree with your view on modenine, he has his first video out, couple of other tracks on radio (schooling ft. rule clean and IX files). His frst video stayed long on the MBI top ten countdown #It'z Pheesayor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

A pregnant woman with a baby on her back was among the 13 people killed in a fresh attack by persons suspected to be Fulani herdsmen in Byei and Batin villages in the Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State in the early hours of yesterday.
The pregnant woman who appeared to have woken her baby from sleep and taken him on her back to be able to get away was burnt in her hut. Some of the victims were similarly matcheted or shot dead, while others were burnt with their houses in the attack which occurred at about 1:30a.m, just after a downpour in the area. The dastardly act came 10 days after hundreds of people were killed in Dogo Nahawa and other villages in Jos South Local Government Area.
Wednesday’s killings occurred, just as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole paid a condolence visit to Dogo Nahawa and prominent leaders in Plateau State including Governor Jonah Jang, Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Gyang Buba, Catholic Arch- Bishop of Jos, Ignatius Kaigama and held closed door meetings with them on how the Dogo Nahawa incident would be the last in the state. According to information gathered, the attackers had come with men wearing Army uniform, who provided cover for them and did the shooting.
The Fulani men were suspected to be those residing in the area and had left in the wake of the Jos crisis of January and are familiar with the terrain. One of the inhabitants, John Davou, who escaped unhurt but had his homestead burnt down, said upon hearing gunshots, he ran out with other members of his family and hid in another area. But by the time they came back, his house had been burnt. He said all the rooms with zinc doors were opened with knife and fire was lit and thrown into them.
The pregnant woman who was burnt to death also had her seven-year-old son killed, wiping out the family except for her husband who had traveled to Abuja a day before the incident. A lady, Kachollom Pam who hung herself on the roof when the attackers arrived watched her two sisters –in- law gruesomely murdered by the men.
Mother of the two girls, Garos Dauda who escaped unhurt was almost out of her senses to the extent of attacking people moving close to the corpses of her children.
A woman aged about 90 was murdered in her sleep. One of the corps members serving in the area, names withheld explained that they were in the nearby village, Jol when they began to hear gunshots and by daybreak when they came around, they saw that people had been killed. He described the operation as well-planned and well-executed, alleging that the soldiers who were expected to protect the people connived with the attackers. He suggested that if soldiers could no longer protect the people they should leave and allow the people to protect themselves.
At the time Daily Sun was in the village, men of the Civil Defence Corps and Red Cross were around to remove the corpses and provide relief materials for the victims. Meanwhile, Speaker Dimeji Bankole has said that unless the culprits were punished the attacks would not be curtailed.
He told community leaders in Dogo Nahawa to hold meetings regularly with all members of the community irrespective of tribe and religion to promote harmony. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2010/mar/18/national-18-03-2010-002.htmThis pdp govt is killing Nigeria, looking the other way round all in the name of politics, this is bad. |
