Music legend Elton John is facing some personal heartbreak!

On Monday, the Music legend Elton John John took to social media to reveal his mother Sheila Farebrother’s passing. He said, “So sad to say that my mother passed away this morning. A University of Vermont College of Medicine child psychiatry team has found that musical training might also help Children who play the violin or piano focus their attention, control their emotions and diminish their anxiety.

The research continues Hudziak’s work with the National Institutes of Health Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Study of Normal Brain Development. Using its database, the team analyzed the brain scans of 232 children ages 6 to 18.

As children age, the cortex — the outer layer of the brain — changes in thickness. In previous analysis of MRI data, Hudziak and his team discovered that cortical thickening or thinning in specific areas of the brain reflected the occurrence of anxiety and depression, attention problems, aggression and behavior control issues even in healthy kids — those without a diagnosis of a disorder or mental illness. With this study, Hudziak wanted to see whether a positive activity, such as music training, would influence those indicators in the cortex.

The study supports The Vermont Family Based Approach, a model Hudziak created to establish that the entirety of a young person’s environment — parents, teachers, friends, pets, and extra-curricular activities — contributes to his or her psychological health. “Music is a critical component in my model,” Hudziak says.

The authors found evidence they expected — that music playing altered the motor areas of the brain, because the activity requires control and coordination of movement. Even more important to Hudziak were changes in the behavior-regulating areas of the brain. For example, music practice influenced thickness in the part of the cortex that relates to “executive functioning, including working memory, attentional control, as well as organization and planning for the future,” the authors write.

A child’s musical background also appears to correlate with cortical thickness in “brain areas that play a critical role in inhibitory control, as well as aspects of emotion processing.”

The findings bolster Hudziak’s hypothesis that a violin might help a child battle psychological disorders even better than a bottle of pills. “We treat things that result from negative things, but we never try to use positive things as treatment,” he says.

Such an approach may prove difficult to accomplish. According to the study’s authors, research from the U.S. Department of Education indicates that three-quarters of U.S. high school students “rarely or never” take extracurricular lessons in music or the arts.

“Such statistics, when taken in the context of our present neuroimaging results,” the authors write, “underscore the vital importance of finding new and innovative ways to make music training more widely available to youths, beginning in childhood.”

Francis Bacon, the father of scientific empiricism, and René Descartes, the French philosopher, were also interested in the phenomenon, which became a theory when, in 1960, a Tanzanian student named Erasto Mpemba explained to his teacher in a class that the hottest mixture of ice cream froze faster than the cold one. This anecdote inspired a technical document about the subject, and the effect began to be analyzed in educational and science magazines. However, its causes and effects have hardly been studied until now.

“It is an effect that, historically, has not been addressed in a rigorous manner but merely as an anomaly and a didactic curiosity,” said Antonio Prados, one of the researchers from the Universidad de Sevilla Department of Theoretical Physics. “From our perspective, it was important to study it in a system with the minimum ingredients to be able to control and understand its behavior,” he said. Manchester City has announced the Club’s third consecutive year of profitability and the ninth successive year of improved financial performance in its 2016-17 Annual Report.
Record revenues of £473.4million posted, a 21% increase from the previous period

All major club activities detailed in the report, including the women’s team’s unprecedented successes and the 30th anniversary of the Club’s City in the Community scheme
Manchester City Football Club has today released its Annual Report for 2016-17, announcing the Club’s third consecutive year of profitability and the ninth successive year of improved financial performance.
The Club has reported record revenues of £473.4million, marking a 21% increase from the previous year and breaking £400million for the first time in City history.
A profit of £1.088million was posted, despite the club reporting against a 13 - month period which had an adverse impact on profitability. The extended reporting period arises from a move to change the Club’s reporting cycle to a July 1st to June 30th year end in order to better align Manchester City FC’s financial year with City Football Group’s growing number of reporting entities.
Commenting on the publication, MCFC Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said, “This report is about making sure our fans and our partners can see the true detailed status of every aspect of the club. What hopefully comes across is that the football organization and off-field business have the right symmetry and balance to allow us to continue to further strengthen and grow.”
In the report, Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak observes the revenue growth moving “towards the £500m mark” and reiterates the club’s long held position that “on-field success and financial sustainability must exist hand-in-hand.”
Despite the men’s team finishing the season without silverware and the disappointment that comes with that, the Chairman also reflects on “a season of promise and of some very real highlights” and the fact that “targeted investment in the summer of 2016 in some talented young players, blended together with the existing capabilities in our squad, led to an impressive start to the season and some memorable performances.”
This sentiment is echoed by Chief Executive Officer Ferran Soriano who points to the fact that while finishing the season empty handed was unsatisfactory, the team showed at periods throughout the season ‘exactly the type of quality football we want to be playing.” He continues saying, “We are committed to playing beautiful football and to win. Both elements are compatible and the second is a consequence of the first.”
On the development of young players, Chairman Al Mubarak celebrates the nine trophies won by the Club’s Academy teams and the two academy players who marked their first team debuts during the season commenting, “The ongoing development of Phil Foden and Brahim Diaz in particular, continues to be encouraging and our commitment to nurture our own talent remains a central pillar for the Club’s long-term sustainability”
The report also highlights the incredible achievements of Manchester City’s treble-winning women’s team, which Khaldoon Al Mubarak describes as “an outstanding achievement” that has established the team as a “major force in the game.”
Looking forward to the 2017-18 season, the Chairman says that the Club “enters this season with a justifiable sense of ambition and expectation”, a view shared by CEO Ferran Soriano who says that he is "convinced we will see further progress and silverware in the seasons to come.”
The Chairman concludes his message, pointing to the fact that the 2017-18 marks a decade under His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed’s stewardship, reflecting that “in the context of more than 120 years of Club history, this is a relatively short period of time, but it has been one of significant growth, with much learned and much gained on a journey that still has a long way to go.”
