CultureRe: Can Any Ibo or Yoruba Speakers Help Me? by Phut(f): 9:26am On Aug 13, 2015
Carriacou1985:
For anyone interested in the exact words and way it is sung and danced, please see the video as posted by Phut.

No one has mentioned the style of dance as a characteristic of which tribe it belongs to?

I'm guessing it does come from a very corrupt form of Igbo with possibly other tribal influences.
Hi Carriacou. This is a video someone posted on facebook. The dance style is very similar to the dance in the ibole video. This is an Igbo dance from Nkanu people in Enugu State, Nigeria. You will notice the spinning or twirling style of dance. I can't get the video to post like the youtube video I posted earlier. Maybe someone can help me? In the meantime, you will have to click the link to view it.

Nkiti means one of a kind/unique. It does not mean nothingness. Nkirika means raggedy. I feel that is where the word okirika (for 2nd hand clothes comes from). So nkirika may apply to a jalopy or clunker.

I still feel your thread about prefixes and suffixes was a good idea. You just have to get more people on board and get the collaboration going
RomanceRe: How Do I Get Out From This Friend Zone by Phut(f): 3:55am On Aug 13, 2015
You guys have gotten to know each other without the distraction of sex and really determined if you really deep down like what the other person represents. If you get married to her the marriage would be great because it was built on a strong foundation. The mistake a lot of people make is basing their decision on sex and lust

Good job Scholti. Your list is looking better and better

Why did you remove Stock car: Ugbo nkiti?

You previously had tire as Ogi. Is this word already in use? What is the etymology and why did you remove it from subsequent lists?

Which song?

I think it's 'year to year' and not 'yetuye'. Phyno has said that on a number of tracks. But if you tell me which song you heard it on, I could be doubly sure.
You just might be correct. They say the word/phrase and then after it comes: so gi ka'm ga na ekpere

I think 260 is a tad overwhelming. Some are repetitions. I think whittling it down to a number that people can learn quickly and actually begin to use is better. Some people that come into this thread are not even going to read the 260 what more learn them

Oyibo is most likely not from Yoruba.

It could be from Portuguese or another European language.
I think it's Igbo. Older generation Igbo people used to answer it as a first name and it means light skinned. There is a woman from my hometown that is called Oyibo Asieme. Also there is that song that goes "oyibo na nu eh joromi jomimi jo". Na nu = Is married to.

I wouldn't say 'too literal'; I would say too 'English'. grin

'To have a heart' in English figurative speech means what you interpreted it as -- 'to have a conscience'; in Igbo it could mean the exact opposite.

Interesting how different peoples would come up with very different meanings (opposite meanings even) for the same expressions.
Hahaha! Now you are pulling my leg. I do have to confess that I tend to think in English and then translate to Igbo (in my mind).

Radoillo I need to ask you something. Phyno and Stormrex say "Yetuye" or something to that effect. Does it mean maka?

Uwaoma and please I don't want the literal meaning cuz that doesn't make any sense
Uwaoma = Good life/world.

Contextually speaking when a person says "I putara uwaoma" It means you came into a good life/world i.e. You are lucky/blessed

I think my favourite verse is Ice Princes tho that may be because I can understand what he's saying......

The chorus that Illbliss keeps repeating over and over.... The meaning ? embarassed

Such an Igbo boy song about container landing and bank alerts lol. Like MI's Bullion Van.
Hmmm ... you are missing oh! I didn't even notice there was anyone else on the track. Illbliss' rhymes enter well well

Trust me I know that album inside out and backwards. The only song I haven't listened to more than 50 times is Paper Chaser ft illBliss
Okay. Have you listened to Bank Alerts by Illbliss?

Thank you, this is probably going to be a very tedious experience, but I'm going to connect to someone. I haven't been able to reach anyone yet, but hopefully my emails will be returned.
Search on YouTube for "learn Igbo". A YouTube user called Igbomatrix has a lot of lessons already set up. The advantage of this is that you get to hear the pronunciations as opposed to just reading text in a book. Ndewoigbolessons is also on YouTube. These are just 2 out of many. They are both in the U.S so you should have no problem connecting with them

Oooooh I remember now
Didn't know the meaning but I heard it sang in that 'Welcome to Enugu' song by Flavour and Stormrex cheesy

So cute. Do people actually use it as a name?
I've only heard people use it as a term of endearment. A man calling his wife Oyoyo'm and vice versa. But I would think nothing stopping a person from answering it as a name. Not when we have the likes of Jennifer LOVE Hewitt

Hehehe yup

On iTunes.

Can't wait till the next one, he said he's releasing it this year.... Hope it's as good as NGNG because that album was perfect lol
Don't worry, when I have time I will test you and Gurgle on NGNG ... seeing as you have refused to open a thread. You better go and "study" now because any thing less than 100 percent will be unacceptable cheesy

Ihuomadinihu

What's the meaning of Oyooyo if you don't mind.

I just love that Nonso even tho it's a tad common. All the Nonso's I met have been so cute. I'm naming one of my kids that whether male or female
Pardon me @ Ihuoma.

I believe Oyooyo = Dear/Dearest

When a woman travels or comes back from work, her children usually run out shouting Mommy oyooyo = Mommy dearest

Hello guys,
NaiRaland is an extension of my family.I can't remember a day without visiting this addictive site.
Back to the matter,my wife is having a son in few weeks.I want u guys to drop beautiful IGBO &ENGLISH names

Let's make this topic fun...No racist comment or abuse.
A gift awaits the nairalander with our preferred choice

Thanks
Why not just an Igbo name? Choose 1 or 2 short ones that are easy to pronounce and you are good to go. I find that people are drawn to you in the U.S., if you have a nice ethnic name. English names are so 2000 and late.

If enter "Igbo names" in Nairaland's search engine, you are going to come up with a lot of threads with a lot of name suggestions. The threads are mostly in the culture section. I will see if I can post some of the links, here.
