It's now very clear that Turbo is used to increase the power output of the engine rather than increasing the engine capacity. Now, is turbo charged engined easy to maintain by Nigerian mechanics? I ask this question because not everyone can afford to take their cars to dealers or to expensive garages. Most of us patronize these so called road side auto technician who as a matter of fact are trying considering the educational background of most of them. Does turbo charged engines require more expertise to maintain than regular engines? Allo contributions will be highly appreciated |
Thanks Moderator for taking this thread to home page. Thanks for all your contributions. I'm afraid of gear problems but majority here say it doesn't have gear issues. Whats the difference in terms of performance between FWD and AWD version of the car? |
ibkgab001: The Car is just too good .. Fuel economy ... 5 speed drive ...VVt mini engine but it hates Bad road and gear oil have to be changed almost everymonthAre you saying it has auto transmissions problems? What do you mean by saying it hates bad roads because I don't know of any car that "likes" bad roads. I also think the auto tranny is 4-speed. abatically: @ibkgab001 I have not seen a car that requires transmission fluid to be changed every month. The recommended is 30k miles, but just to be on a safer side u can change every year, but definitely not every month, especially when u are using the recommended fluid which is Toyota type iv. Toyota matrix is a good car economy wise. I'm just not a fan because it has one of the worst interior i have ever seen in a car. The buttons peel off easily and the dashboard is the ugliest i have seen, and the car is pricey too. @op, if u are buying it try buying the one with AWD, at least that will complement its shortcomings.Poor interior design is common with Toyota vehicles so I guess Matrix is not an exception. I really wouldn't mind the poor interior, you have to sacrifice something for something. What advantage does the AWD have over the FWD version of the car? Nobody has told me is the car is DURABLE AND WETHER THE PARTS ARE EASILY ACCESSIBLE AND AFFORDABLE TOO. More contributions please |
@Trac Thanks for that response. I always thought that the engine might be difficult for ordinary Nigerian mechanic to handle well. I don't have so much money to go to expensive auto technicians |
I have asked some mechanics and they said Toyota matrix is same as Toyota corolla with a different mini-SUV body. I have checked carcomplaints.com and it says 2003 has mostly reported engine problem. Please anybody with experience on this car should please help before I make a mistake. Is worth buying to be used as everyday car and for traveling once in a while. I love the spec of the car but then I want to be sure about the availability of the parts and it's cost effectiveness, durability, etc Thanks for all your contributions. |
Please I see mostly in Volkswagen products having Turbo Charged Engine and I wonder, what exactly is a turbo charged engine? I notice that turbo charged engines produces higher power that their non turbo engines. For example you will see 1.8L turbo engine producing about 140hp while a 2.0L engine will produce 120hp. Can the turbo engine be easily fixed by most Nigerian mechanics? Thanks for all your contributions |
@op Finish the story once and for all to avoid somebody hijacking it. |
@costee Thanks for your response. What I mean by not been referred to Ladipo for parts is that I expect the parts to b easily accessible anywhere in the country. I don't reside in Lagos so I wouldn't want a situation where I will need to go down to Lagos to buy parts for the vehicle when the need arises. From your response, does it mean the two cars are same technically? |
Hello. I know this will be the best thread to get answer to this question. I'm considering 2000 Nissan Primera Estate 1.8L engine or 2000 Nissan Almera Tino 1.8L engine. Now i want the house to help me make a choice considering the following: 1. I intend to do inter-region travel i.e. from South West to South East at least twice every year 2. Low on fuel since the car will be used on daily basis 3. Easily accessible and relatively cheap parts - i do NOT want to be referred to Ladipo to buy parts 4. Rugged and durable - our roads are not good 6. Good interior. Attached are the pix for clarity. Thanks for all your inputs

How much can I get Nissan Almera Tino 2000 model 1.8L with auto trans? |
Instead of f acing your studies, you go about FORNICATING in the guise of boyfriend and girlfriend. I will advise you to zip up and repent. Jesus is Lord. When you are ready for marriage then look for a wife and enjoy matrimonial bliss |
olumide4christ: @IdaraCHODB - I am considering purchasing a MPV 2001 or 2003. What's your advice on that? Do you know about competent/reliable Mazda specialist mechanics or mechanics in Lagos that can adequately handle the car?? Please I need their details so that I can ensure that adequate hands are on ground to maintain the car if or when i eventually buy it. Hope to hear from you soon. thanks.@OP Go for 2001 model. It is more advisable |
What about the "insurance company" type? |
@car-doctor Please which of the corolla is the "insurance company" and "Bank" type? please be specific to help others reading through this thread |
@OP Attach pictures for clarity |
Hi. How much can you get a 2002 or 2003 Toyota Corolla (1.8L GLi), that type that Banks use? |
Mazda MPV is.....oh, sorry. You only requested for comment from @Sienna. |
How much on the average is the tokunbo of the two corollas? |
Please could somebody enlighten me on the difference between these two corolla 2003 models. One is mostly used by Banks in Nigeria. Are the prices same? Attached are the picture of the two cars.

Hi Sonetautos. I'm interested in Japan version of 2001 or 2002 Toyota Ipsum 240u or 240s, 6-seater (automatic transmission). How much will that cost? Then how much will it cost to convert it? Do you have a reliable person who does conversion? I will wait for your response. |
Sorry I actually attached the picture of the car to that post but somehow it did not show. I meant 2001 toyota avensis verso. You can google it |
I want to suggest this vehicle but i'm not sure if you can get it at your budget of N1m |
adejide2: Greetings to all ye my people. I seriously need your counseling on the most reliable, durable and easy to maintain family car I can buy in nigeria whether nigeria register or tokunbo. I have read some thread on this topic but I still need more counseling on it in order to go for the best. I have in mind the following cars toyota sienna, camry, corolla, picnic, vw sharan, and mazda mpv 1998-2004 model worth #1M. Thank very much for your urgent responseWell, each of those vehicles you mentioned has their advantages and disadvantages. Toyota Sienna - Has that Toyota durability and very reliable. It is NOT fuel economical which is understandable (3.0L V6 engine). The parts are quite pricy too. Honda Odyssey - If you must go for this then buy the first generation odyssey (1996 - 1998). From 1999 model has CHRONIC AUTO GEAR problems which is well reported and is comes with 3.0L V6 engine. The 1st generation as i mentioned is very durable and fuel efficient (2.2L or 2.3L I4 engine). Some even come with dual air conditioning. Toyota Picnic - Has that Toyota durability and very reliable and fuel efficient (2.0L I4 engine) but it is smaller that its competitors. Watch out for RHD to LHD converted since it a a European vehicle. The boot is very small and does not have dual air conditioning for effective cooling for the rear seat passengers. VW Sharan - Durable and reliable vehicle but comes mostly as manual. The 4 cylinder version is fuel efficient (1.8T or 2.0L) though the 2.0L seem a bit under powered (about 115hp) for a 7-seater vehicle. Generally does not have that luxury look. Mazda MPV - Another good family vehicle with good interior but fuel thirsty with Ford Duratec engine (2.5L, V6). 2000-2001 uses 4-speed auto gear which from reviews performs better than 2002 - 2006 using 5-speed auto. The 5-speed is known to be more prone to developing problems so you need to take note. One auto gear seller said the gear box for 2000-2001 are two types - one is N45,000 while the other one is N130,000. You may need to consider this just in case you need to change the gear box. The choice is yours! |
smartchoice: why is it being sold off @ ridiculous prices?Do you measure the durability of a vehicle by the cost of purchase? |
This is RHD converted to LHD. @Poster your price is not realistic knowing that it is a converted car. |
I will advise you to go for 2001 model. The gear box is less prone to problem and check other threads about gear box on this forum. |
