Please gurus in the house I need urgent help.

I have a Honda Civic 2004. The automatic transmission slips after sometime of use(I cannot say exactly how many kilometers the car covers before it happens). But once I switch off the engine and start it again, the transmission works perfectly. Then if I continue to use it, after a certain no of kilometers, the transmission will stop working again.

When I took it to a gear technician, the problem did not come up so the person said I should bring it when the problem occurs.

Please i need urgent help before the transmission dies completely.

Don't change to Mobil 2000 5w30 if you're satisfied with the performance of your engine with Mobil Super XHP 1000.

The car was just bought and the previous owner (the first owner) used Mobil XHP 1000. I cannot say much about the performance for now but i was hoping that using Mobil Super 2000 5W30 will improve performance of the engine and still keep i running for a long time.

The car will be used for e-hailing.

These are the two engines found in Elantra 2006-2010. No 1 as per the picture was bought as new in Nigeria while No 2 was imported as tokumbo from the US.

I understand that engine in No 2 is way cheaper than engine in No 1. Engine No 2 comes only as 2.0L while engine No 1 comes as 1.6L or 1.8L.

Result of little research i have done subject to any correction grin

You guys are derailing this thread. I was following this thread to learn about Hyundai cars but its degenerating to something very unnecessary.

One of the questions @Op asked is, why are Hyundai engines so expensive? I read from another thread that Hyundai sold as new in Nigeria have different engine than Toks from US. The engine of the ones sold in Nigeria as new cost much more than those imported as Toks from the US.

I really do not know how true this is. If it is actually true, how can one know the one imported from US and one bought new in Nigeria that is if you are buying Nigerian used?

Personally, there are 4 cars I will consider.
1. Toyota Corolla bank type manual. It has the same engine with all these auto corollas selling for 1.5m and you can get it for 800k or less.
2. Honda civic. 2002
-2004 model. More economical than almighty Corolla. Manual or auto doesn't matter. You can get it for 800k or less.
3. Honda City. The auto is CVT, so I would advice you go for manual transmission. This is the baba of fuel conservation.
4. Toyota Yaris. Manual or auto doesn't matter. The car is simply rugged. Fuel economy is excellent. I heard parts are cheap and easy to maintain. Though some people complain about AC problems. But falls within your budget.
I'm not sure about getting Honda Civic 2006 upwards with the budget you have...
But if you see clean one for 800k it's also a good buy.

I agree with your post. however i learnt in another thread that Honda makes one of the best CVT so there may not be need to worry buying Honda City with CVT Transmission. However the buyer MUST use ONLY CVT fluid to avoid destroying the transmission

Parts dey. Body parts are expensive (general Honda thing). Replacement parts for mechanical items are not too expensive. Within the same price range of other cars.

Thanks so much. I asked a friend who is a Honda parts seller today. He said exactly what you have said here. Body parts are very expensive like bumper, fender, side mirrors, headlamps, tail lights, etc. I remember he said one of the doors is about 40k.

However mechanical parts are relatively less expensive. Some of the mechanical parts include the shock absorbers, brake pads, steering rack, power steering pump, etc.

Once again, thanks

Tzar:
Don’t buy any car higher than a 1.8L engine capacity. The lower the engine the better for you sef. The bigger the engine the higher the fuel consumption. And your highest running cost is fuel. NEVER BUY A V6 ENGINE (3.0L & above engine) FOR UBER/BOLT!
Accord is a 2.0 /2.4L /3.0L engine so don’t go there!

Don’t forget, you need the AC running in top shape ( AC increases fuel consumption) and your price for parts must be low.
Factors to consider for the car:
1. Price of initial purchase
2. Condition of engine, gear, body rust, AC & tyres / suspension
3. Size of engine
4 Cheap & available replacement parts.
5. Never buy a car without scanning the engine and GEAR 1st. Invest in a good scanner that can scan both. It cost fron 60k & above.

These cars a great for Uber/Bolt.

1. Kia Rio or Hyundai Accent. They are the same car. 1.4L & 1.6L
PRO- they have the best fuel economy I know of. AC & suspension is also very good. Very good to buy as naija used but expensive as tokubo,
CON- One of the most expensive replacement parts.

2. Toyota Corolla- 1.6L, 1.8L
PRO- available parts. Good fuel economy. Very good AC, good suspension & strong engine. Every mechanic can fix it. Very good leg room for riders.
CON- very OVERPRICED (extremely expensive to buys as tokunbo or naija used). Parts are available, but very expensive.

3. Toyota Yaris 1.5L
PRO- Excellent fuel economy. Very good AC, suspension & strong engine. Every mechanic can fix it
CON- very OVERPRICED (extremely expensive to buys as tokunbo or naija used). Parts are NOT available & very expensive.

Honda City- 1.5L
PRO- Excellent fuel economy. Very good AC, Excellent suspension (the ONLY HONDA with good suspension) & strong engine. Parts are very cheap at Oyingbo in Lagos, but expensive everywhere else.
CON- very OVERPRICED (extremely expensive to buys as tokunbo but cheap as naija used). Better to use a HONDA specialist as mechanic.

Honda Civic 1.8L , 2.0L Avoid the 2.0L
PRO- Excellent fuel economy. Very good AC, strong engine. Parts are very cheap at Oyingbo in Lagos, but expensive everywhere else. Very good leg room for riders.
CON- Bad suspension. Better to use a HONDA specialist as mechanic. The 1.8L engine is rare in automatic gear but available as manual.

Kia Picanto 1.1L
PRO- The BEST fuel economy I know of. AC & suspension is also very good. Very good to buy as naija used but expensive as tokubo,
CON- One of the most expensive replacement parts. No space for luggage. Riders don’t like the compact seating.

This is a guide @op. To the best of my knowledge, you are about 80% on point. However, on Honda Civic 1.8L engine, they come mostly with automatic transmission and NOT manual.

I would also add Honda Civic 1.7L to the list(Honda Civic 2004-2005)

Durable? It depends. If you drive it like a danfo, the body won't hold up.
Engine is solid. Trans is a bit iffy if not serviced regularly or if you pour non OEM fluid into it.
Like the name says (city), it was meant for city driving. Fuel economy is superb.

No matter what you do, don't pour non cvtf fluid inside that transmission.

Thanks for your prompt response. However, this model as shown in the picture below as I read uses normal automatic transmission rather than CVT.

How about availability and cost of parts?

Hello guys, I need help.

I am looking for a good Nigerian used car to buy for everyday use. The car will be used to n fro office weekdays and taxify for weekends/public holidays.

Consequently, i am concerned about low fuel consumption, cheap and readily available parts, very good AC system and enough room for 3 people at the back.

After my research, I have come up with the following, all Auto transmission:
1. Honda Civic 2007-2008 (US Model)
2. Honda City (the model with normal auto transmission)
3. Hyundai Elantra 2007-2010(US Model)

I did not include Toyota Corolla because of the theft and harm to drivers. A taxify driver told me a couple of Corolla drivers were killed last year and their cars snatched. Toyota Matrix would have being there but I don't know if hatchback cars are acceptable for uber/taxify.

Thanks
