But Asians and Africans understood each other for millennia without English or French. These languages have only been on the African continent actively for less than 200 years, in a continent that is more than a 100,000 years old, in which time Africans communicated and shared with each other across space and time. English and French, serve a useful purpose but they are not inevitable. Even today on the continent, there are extensive spaces where African languages play a vital role of communication.

Virtually everyone in China understands Hans Chinese, virtually everyone in Japan understands Japanese, virtually everyone in Korea understands Korean and virtually everyone in Malaysia Understands Malay.

We do not need to merge ethnic groups and languages to create a few super-continental languages or ethnic groups for peace and prosperity. Learn a few African languages and study African history and current affairs. Follow African news and their developments. You have no debate. I can smash your views but it might be a waste of time. I only commented on the language part of your first post, so that those who are not sufficiently clued would not fall into your views. The English language is largely a borrowed language. There is very little in it that is native to it compared to 90% of Nigerian languages that depend on their vocabulary and grammar to function. Take Igbo for instance. It has hundreds of dialects with their own vocabularies, proverbs etc. It has native words for many plants, trees, animals, politics, economics etc, where the English language equivalents are from Greek and Latin. The English language should be a distant second language on the continent. If not for inferiority complex, by now we should have Hausa, Zulu, Shona universities in Africa, just as there are Polish, Catalan etc universities.

No European country - apart from Ireland for historical reasons - has bowed to the international might of English by making it a national language and Europe has fifty countries. Even Sweden that is seen as the most receptive of English, has the second highest number of published articles - in Swedish - on Wikipedia. Preach your message of making the English language a continental language, first to Europe, the homeland of English as it only comes distant second on the continent. I would rather Zulu to be the continental language. It is a more natural language - 90% of its vocabulary belongs to it. Its written works on science, politics, economics etc are largely own. It has produced lots of books and has a vibrant media. English produces more books because of its status in world science and business. But German, French, Japanese and Chinese etc are not far behind. There are many knowledges that are not published in English. Every years lots of books are published in African languages from Malawi, Uganda etc.

Africa only needs to manage its diversity of language, by respecting them and apportioning spaces to them to thrive (I prefer it to be in-country) and then allowing mutual co-operation between them. We should aim for the Switzerland example. It is composed of French, Italian and German ethnic groups, with each having universities run in their languages and many other examples of cultural cohabitation. This is civilisation.

Many African languages are underdeveloped, but that's not to say they can't be developed. It's a matter of effort and will.

Anyway, languages are slowly dying, day by day. At some point we will have to choose. I'm curious though, why you'd want English as a lingua franca. It's not native to Africa and can't express Africans values, ideas and concepts like our own languages. If you go to France and ask the people to start speaking English, they will refuse. If you go to Africa and ask someone to speak English, that person will be ashamed by his/hers inability to do so. Do you see where the problem lies? Africans always look outside their own continent instead of inside their own. They strive for foreign values instead of sticking with what they know.

Sadly, we as a poeple are supressed to mere shadows of our former kingdoms. People suffer and poverty has taken over. That makes the way for an overly materialistic society where there is no time for self-reflection.

Objectively, English is the best language ever created. It has the largest vocabulary, it is capable of the most nuance and complexity and more books are written in English than in all other languages combined.

If they are going to die, it should be a natural/consensual process involving the native speakers and not something slapped on them.

Igbo and Yoruba for instance, are more natural than French. The former languages rely heavily on their natural formations, while the latter on Latin, from where it derives most of its grammar and vocabulary. In fact African languages on the whole, are natural specimens of used languages. They are spoilt with numerous dialects, each having unique words and richness. The only area African languages might struggle is in deep science and even this is navigable with great creativity. There are many African languages that have come a long way like Kinyarwanda and Zulu, that have generated huge bodies of writings.

And as usual you people cannot stop talking about whites.

2000 years ago Europe was just as ethnically fragmented as Africa is today. Modern Britain with about 3 or 4 native ethnic groups (English, Welsh, Scots, Gaelic) had up to 12 during the time of the Romans, each speaking a different language and practicing a stupid backwards "culture." What is now Germany & France (Germania) was even worse.

The difference between Europe and Africa is that Europe conflated its multiple tribes into many less but larger ones via conquest and mixing. Having Latin as a Langua Franca was the main reason why Europe was able to exchange scientific information so effectively between countries and become more culturally and religiously similar during the middle ages and onward.

The reason why this has not occurred in Africa is because Africa is frozen in an archaic state of development that will not be broken until the excess diversity is eliminated.

The first 2 images show the ethnic map of Europe during the time of the Roman Empire 2000 years ago. The final image shows the ethnic groups (tribes) of modern Europe, much larger and consolidated than what we see in Africa. They also usually have separate states.
