Whats the percentage of importers to Nigerian population?.......thats an infinitesimal figure,,,,,,,,only very microscopic few wld benefit............u shld be afraid of the worsening Naira value becasue its has a result of crude oil pice fall......if the countries major source of revenue becomes obsolete,,rhe country can be come broke and be come a failed state......FG dosnt contribute much to the social welfare of Nigerians but atleast we need them to provide incompetent police officers and soldiers.....and pay salaries of teachers and Civil servents......Considern that FG employs majority of the population,,,majority of people would be affected because the Governmeent would be unable to pay salaries,,,,even if you or ur parents dont work for the Government,,,,u must know friends or family who do

1)Did you just validate Gej.....by using lots of grammer to hinder communication?....are u sayn Alison madueke Stealing $20bn, stella odua stealing $250million, and lots of other grave crimes against against the future of this country is legitimate has long has the integrity of the organization is upheld, i am utterly bamboozled by your comment.......very shocking

2)the dollar rose from #170 to #180 within a week.....this can be attributed to the falling oil prices as a result of discovery alternate energy sources like shale,,, and the worlds drive towards a green revolution. crude oil is now less than 100$ per barrel and its its falling fast........the bulk of our revenue is from crude oil,,,and our budget benchmark is 100$ per barrel,,,,if the oil prices plummets to $11, the country would have to borrow to compliment the budget,,,,,,,,that would be detrimental to the future of the country and the future generations,,,being in debt before they were even born.. If our major source of revenue becomes unmarketable or unprofitable,,,,,the naira would fall and become has useless has the Zimbabwean dollar

Your Grammatical construction professes someone with a high level of intellect but your statements are shocking......The President needs 2/3 majority vote of the senate to remove the CBN governor., and he also needs that amount of vote to appoint the CBN governor .......If thats not in place then the president can hire and fire anybody based on his disgression, imagine if the presidents goes to meet the CBN governor to print him some money and he refuses,,,,without the senate the president can fire him and hire some1 who would help him embezzle. In normal civilized countries,,,The president is not God or king or Cesar, he his answerable to the senate and needs the senate to taking any decision. its only in special circumstances like war that gives the president absolute authority
Is it possible for the I.G of police to act without the approval of the President?.....Lets say its even possible.......why has the I.G of police not been fired or called to other for harrasing the no.4 citizen in the country.

Nigeria is a messed up countey where anything goes.....We elect thugs, idiots and Ilitrates who dont even know what their functions has senators are.......we are currently in a state of abyss and we would continue down this path if there is no change.

Concerning security i am shocked at your lack of empathy for other people than urself........i dont know where you live but for the rest of us living in Nigeria,,,we have been victims of insurgency or armed robbers or even harrasment from police and soldiers,,,,,,,i know people who have died from bomblast in Abuja, i know people who have died from bomblast in Niger state, i know people who have died from bomblast in Maiduguri,,,,,i know people who have died from armed robbery attacks......i know a friend whose brother died in Maiduguri hhas a result of a soldier opening fire on the taxi he was in because of misunderatanding with the driver.....we i drive around Abj,,,,am always in fear of the unknown,,,, when, where would a bomb go off AGAIN....

Politics › Re: Fresh Air:Naira In Free Fall Against Dollar May Reach N200 To A Dollar This WeeK by podosci(m): 8:52am On Nov 19, 2014
NgeneUkwenu:
LAGOS—The fortunes of the national currency, the Naira took a sharp turn downwards yesterday as it fell by 270 kobo, with the parallel market exchange rate rising to N180 per dollar from N177.3 on Monday.
Since the beginning of the month, the Naira has fallen against the US dollar by N7.9 at the interbank market, and N10 at the parallel market.
Interbank and parallel market operators attributed this sharp depreciation to restrictions introduced by the CBN to curb foreign exchange demand at the official market. Falling crude oil prices, coupled with depleting Excess Crude Account has triggered palpable anxiety about the value of the Naira. Stocks have also been hit as a result.

Emefiele
On October 28, in addition to a 10-kobo margin limit imposed on intervention dollars, the CBN banned banks from selling dollars to Bureaux de Change (BDCs). Furthermore, on November 6th, the CBN excluded importation of six items from official foreign exchange, saying it would no longer sell official forex for their importation. The items included electronics, finished products, information technology, generators, telecommunication equipment and invisible transactions. According to the apex bank, the items would henceforth be funded from the interbank foreign exchange market only.
Thus, the apex bank unwittingly shifted forex demand for importation of the six items from the official market to the interbank market.
The two restrictions combined triggered sharp increase in demand for forex in the interbank market, and scarcity of dollars in the parallel market. Though the CBN was selling intervention dollars to banks, banks could trade with the dollars because of the 10 kobo limit. This, according to a foreign exchange dealer created a scarcity situation in interbank and the subsequent steady depreciation of the naira.
Why CBN imposed restrictions
The restrictions were imposed to stem the persistent decline in the nation’s external reserves following continued decline in price of crude oil. Within three months, the price of crude oil fell from $100 per barrel to $78 per barrel.
The sharp decline in crude oil prices occasioned apprehension among foreign investors, who believe that with decline in revenue from crude oil, and the CBN using the reserves to defend the Naira, it would not be long before the Naira suffered sharp depreciation. Hence they moved their money out of the country by divesting from the nation’s stock market and FGN bonds.
Scarcity of dollars behind Naira’s fall
Acting President, Association of Bureaux De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON), Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe in a conversation with Vanguard said the depreciation was due to scarcity of dollars in the market. He said most of the banks are not selling dollars to BDCs, thus worsening scarcity in the market.
This was corroborated by Managing Director/Chief Executive, HJ Trust BDC, Mr. Harrison Owoh. He said that parallel market rate rose from N177.3 to N180 per dollar because there is no dollar in the market. He said the banks are not selling to BDCs, and the two banks that sold, sold at N179 per dollar and N178.4 per dollar respectively. He added that depreciation of the Naira is not limited to the dollar, adding that it has been depreciating against the Euro and Pound Sterling in recent times too. He said the exchange rate of the Euro has risen to N220 from N117 last week. Owoh said that the market is overwhelmed with uncertainty about the exchange rate.
“In fact, we don’t know what the rate of the dollar is now”, he said.
Hoarding
However, Vanguard investigations reveal that increasing scarcity in the market has prompted operators to resort to hoarding whatever foreign currency in their possession. It was gathered that BDCs that bought dollars from the CBN at N157 per dollar last week hoarded them, only to sell this week at N179/N180 per dollar.
CBN bows to banks
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday bowed to banks’ demand for the removal of the 10 kobo margin limit imposed on intervention dollars.
Meanwhile, the Naira depreciated to N180 to the dollar at the parallel market in response to scarcity of dollars in the market.
Intervention dollars
Further probes by Vanguard reveal that at a meeting between the CBN and chief executives of banks yesterday, the CBN agreed to remove the 10 kobo margin limit imposed three weeks ago on intervention dollars.
Intervention dollars are dollars sold directly to banks by the CBN to stabilise the exchange rate of the Naira in the interbank market.
“Funds purchased through the CBN interventions should be utilised within two working days of delivery at a rate not more than 10 kobo above purchase rate. Consequently, intervention funds not utilised within two working days of delivery should be returned to CBN at the original purchase rate”, the CBN said in a circular signed by Mr. I.O Gbadamosi, Director, Trade and Exchange Department.
The limit however made the intervention dollars unattractive to banks and as a result they stopped purchasing the dollars from the CBN.
Investigation further revealed that the banks deliberately shunned CBN’s request for the foreign exchange quotes or offer to sell intervention dollars.
This however frustrated efforts of the apex bank to curtail depreciation of the Naira in the interbank foreign exchange market, leading to N7.45 depreciation of the national currency last week.
To arrest this development, the apex bank called a meeting of chief executives of banks yesterday to discuss recent developments in the foreign exchange market and its effort to stabilise the exchange rate.
Vanguard reliably gathered that the bank CEOs made it clear to the apex bank the 10 kobo margin limit has to go for banks to purchase the intervention dollars.
While the meeting was in progress, the Naira continued to fall at the interbank market, with the interbank exchange rate rising to N177.3 per dollar by mid-day. It was gathered that this development and fears that the interbank exchange rate could hit N180 per dollar before the close of business yesterday prompted the CBN to accede to the request of the banks for the removal of the 10 kobo limit.
A senior foreign exchange dealer, who confirmed this development to Vanguard, said the decision to remove the limit was communicated to banks via the Reuters trading platform. In addition, the CBN and the bank captains agreed that the apex bank would continue to intervene in the interbank market.
Furthermore, the apex bank hurriedly sold intervention dollars to the banks, to arrest the free fall of the Naira in the interbank market. The move proved effective, as the interbank rate dropped sharply to N170 per dollar, before rising to close at N173.25.
Naira would continue free fall
According to Harrison Owoh, except the CBN increases dollar sale to BDCs, or allow banks to sell intervention dollars to them, the Naira would continue to depreciate in the parallel market.
“The $15,000 sold to each BDCs is inadequate to address the scarcity in the market. Once the CBN increases dollar supply to BDCs, the parallel market rate would fall significantly”, he said.
A senior foreign exchange dealer who spoke on anonymity however said the though the CBN would try to manage the situation, it is obvious that it would have to devalue the Naira very soon. He said there are increasing fears among foreign exchange dealers that the CBN surprise the market with a N15 depreciation of the naira at the official market. He said banks are already advising their customers who have dollar liabilities to move them into Naira to avoid the severe impact of a sharp devaluation of the naira.
But a former CBN Director who confided in Vanguard said that the CBN can avoid a sharp devaluation by adopting some measures. “To put a small halt to the sliding Naira, CBN should allow the market operate, since it operates RDAS, which is a post mortem fixing rate process. Secondly it should use moral suasion to manage supply by encouraging dollar earning parastatals to support the market.”

October 17th, the Jonathan-led Nigerian government suddenly announced a ceasefire deal with the Boko Haram terrorist group. This announcement was carelessly welcomed by much of the global community who still perhaps and out of desperation, hoped that peace could be miraculously delivered by the Goodluck administration after six years of consistent bloody failure.

The President of Chad, Idriss Deby, a two decade dictator and military war lord with exhibited links to the terrorist group and a Nigerian ex-governor implicated as a terror sponsor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff were allegedly behind this 12th hour, pre re-election campaign, ceasefire deal initiated at a private meeting held in N’Djamena this September, with the duo and Nigeria’s President in attendance. With hopes raised, after initially denying the connection, the Nigerian government admitted to this purpose of the meeting.
It is now painfully known that the so-called ceasefire deal was a mere ploy to allow Boko Haram gain the upper hand and devastate and conquer large chunks of the nation’s helpless northeast. While the Jonathan-led Nigerian government’s army, under the command of the defense chief, Air Marshal Alex Badeh who had just promised to equip civilians in the northeast to defend themselves and finish off Boko Haram, rather ordered the army to stand down; Boko Haram regrouped, re-equipped and swept across the northeast adding the top half of Adamawa state to their enlarging new independent ‘country.’

Hundreds of thousands of Nigerians were affected, with thousands displaced or enslaved and thousands more killed. The French were said to also be party to this fraudulent peace-deal.

The Nigerian government is yet to officially declare the unilateral declaration of a cessation of fire, over. The Jonathan government is yet to explain to Nigeria and the World how and why they made such a monumental blunder if it can be so mildly put. And no top official has been resigned for their responsibility in such a high level security failure with devastating effects to the sovereignty and security of Nigeria and protection of life, property and territory of the people.

This lack of admittance and responsibility for such “error,” weeks after its fruitation has been bitterly experienced in lives and hope losses for thousands, indicts the Nigerian President once again, for unacceptable incompetence, carelessness, nonchalance and reckless irresponsibility. Rather than apologize and retire those culpable, the Nigerian President was spotted Tuesday declaring his intention to run for a further four years in Aso rock onto of the eight he has already spent at the apex of power.

The implications of Nigeria’s recent error in the war on terror are frightening. Boko Haram has now thoroughly embedded within towns and local governments across the northeast. They have secured years worth of food and supplies and stolen trailer loads of explosives from a cement factory in addition to obtaining heaps of new ammunition and military vehicles from barracks’ they captured.

Boko Haram is not invincible by any means but, the process of dislodging the urban embedded terrorists is now going to be long, hard and devastating. If Boko Haram is ever to be expelled, bombs will drop like rain across Borno, Adamawa, Yobe and whatever new States they have captured by the time sensible action is initiated. Millions of Nigerians will die or be at risk of death. Life and the economy of the entire northeast will be all but extinguished. It is a sad day for anyone who understands the situation update courtesy of this ceasefire blunder and has empathy on the people of the north and nation.

We are talking of a war like has been in Afghanistan, Syria; like was used to defeat Gaddafi and destroy Libya. The type of war in Iraq. Every day that passes with continued government inaction takes Nigeria closer to either permanently losing its territory to the new Boko Haram terror nation to be annexed perhaps by its friends in francophone Chad, or to a recovery war that will leave millions dead and at risk of death.

Nigeria is a foolish country . True federalism is not being practiced here, States are suppose to be independent of the federal government apart from issues of National security and foreign affairs but in Nigeria the state Government depend on the Federal government for everything . The powers of the state Government interms of security is limited to the Effectiveness of the federal government. Even in the USA matters of Terrorism are handled by the Federal Government, if a bomb goes off in Newyork, The NYPD would work in conjunction with the FBI and homeland security but the Federal Agencies would take the lead in the investigation. IN NIGERIA we don't have Kaduna police department or Borno Police department not even Imo police department, rather we have Nigerian Police Force under the mandate of the federal Government, Therefor any issue of security falls back to the office of the Inspector General of police, Director of SSS, Chief of Army staff all under the federal Government, The federal Government headed by the President who is the Commander in Chief............Before you reply let me ask you, Can Gov. Rochas remove the IG of police?, if he cant, then how can he alone without the Intervention of the Federal Govt ensure the safety of life and security in his state. Forget all those nonsense campaign promises,We know politicians make nonsense campaign promises to entice stupid Nigerians to vote for them

is u.s.a Democracy different from our own?
when bomb blast Boston Republican govt give
Obama idea on how to capture the culprit the
people of the country blame state govt for not
putting much security in place doing the
marathon but in Nigeria democracy when bomb
blast in kano APC accuse Jonathan ,governor of
the same state accuse Jonathan ,even mass accuse
Jonathan is this how Democratic govt have to be?
why should APC in there own state accuse
President nawaoo in USA Republican state will like
to show outstanding in every affair so that people
will believe in them even voting for them .but
what is work of state government?
I thought they were elected can't they protect
those that elect them?
what is work of President in Democratic nation?
are they not the one that support the state when
situation is going out of hand?
why is obiano first focus is to protect the life of
people who vote for him and that attract much
investors .
in USA President always focus on threat between
foreign countries and support state if there is any
internal security chalange in abs news they accuse
new York state govt for not putting Ebola team in
alert in Nigeria APC accuse President gej for not
putting facility in place? is this how democracy
suppose to be ?
In USA each state has the right to a militia and each state has its own police department and its included in their constituition, but in Nigeria the federal Government is incharge of both the police, Army and paramilitary formations......It kind of make sense to blame the Federal Govt and not the state govt for any lapses in security

"if President GEJ rigs himself back into office in 2015, it may very well mark the end of this country.” Junaid Mohammed

Hmmmm seriously I have tried my possible best not to see politics from a regional point of view because as a person I have got lots of wonderful friends from all over Nigeria. My very good friend Ibrahim Muhammad is here on my page,we met during NYSC, he is such a great guy. ALH Kabiru also is one hell of a guy I met during my service year, infact I still have the wristwatch he bought for me when he went to Mecca. Nice guys I tell you and I tell you these are the kinda guys I want to be calling brothers when we meet in foreign soil. But seriously I think these young friends of mine needs to call their fathers to order because a particular madness has entered their heads that makes them feel we still live in the 19BC.

The north has ruled this country more than any other region and the next 4years GEJ will lead Nigeria will not make the north go into extinction. Northern elders have been threatening WAR WAR should GEJ run. I want to bring to the notice of these old men that no part of Nigeria has monopoly of violence over another .

I VOM has been praying for this so called marriage Nigeria to break up long time ago because I still see no benefit from the so called union but God who knows more than we all do has been keeping us together. So let no old man from the north come and shout war as if others are afraid to fight.

GEJ has done more for the north than he has done for the south where he comes from also GEJ government has done more in 3years for the whole north than the 38yrs a northern has ruled Nigeria.

So to Mr Junaid Mohammed who has declared war should GEJ wins, we say no shaking bring it on and see if boko haram fight in the north east will not look like a childs play mtchewww.

President Goodluck jonathan will rule this country till Lord Luggard come and correct the mistake he made in 1914.

VOM
GEJ looks like a messiah to you because of the successive idiots who have been rulling us since 1960, if GEJ cannot even be elected mayor in reasonable civilised countires, talk more of President. Look, Forget about whatever nonsense some northern elders are saying but GEJ cannot and should not be allowed too rule this country, He is unintelligent and utterly clueless, I don blame him for the present state of the country where insecurity, corruption and indiscipline are at the peak , I don't blame him because he never planedbeing Governor, talk more of President. If someone like Fashola or Oshiomole were leading the country and the Northern people were agitating for violence, I would be 100% behind you but GEJ is not fit o be CEO of a company talk more of President of a country.
