Community-based Entrepreneurship Development Programme (CEDP)

Theme: Community-Based Entrepreneurship: Transforming The People’s Passion & Resources into Sustainable Local Enterprises.
For Civic/Community leaders, CBOs/FBOs/NGOs and Entrepreneurs from Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION
Economic Development is no longer precisely about attracting or wooing business to the community as global changes have forced Civic Leaders and communities to rethink their approach. Rather prosperous communities across the world have achieved sustainable growth by developing local systems that support entrepreneurial development. Their approach is built on developing a civic culture and structure that appropriates the passion, innovativeness, energy and creativity of its people; translating them into catalysts for growth. Such leaders are also committed to meeting the needs of the entrepreneurs as they grow their businesses through resources, capital and strong networks.
In setting the stage to take advantage of the entrepreneurial spirit of our communities, civic leaders need to develop the requisite capacity to enhance what will galvanize their people towards fostering local business enterprises and, ultimately, creating local economic prosperity.
This programme was developed in order to practically offer Nigerian Civic & Community Leaders and Entrepreneurs skills and approaches for creating and developing community-based entrepreneurship in their respective communities in Nigeria.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

1. To share Indian experience and policies with the participants in five different industries.
2. To expose the participants to various government and private initiated projects that are creating entrepreneurs in the communities of India.
3. Equip participants with technical know-how to establish community-based projects in any of the following:- Agriculture & Food Processing, Energy (Solar and Inverter), ICT, Bamboo & Cane Technology and Waste Management.
4. To facilitate Inter-cultural exchange, learning opportunities and increased business collaboration between Nigerian and Indian entrepreneurs.

INDIAN EXPERIENCE

In the last two decades, India has experienced a significant economic growth. This growth has been attributed to entrepreneurship in the context of its relationship with rural development. In other to accelerate economic development in any community, it is necessary to promote entrepreneurship. India has achieved this through a robust entrepreneurial orientation in its rural areas based on stimulating local entrepreneurial talent and subsequent growth of indigenous companies. This in turn, created jobs and added economic value to the communities and at the same time, helps to keep scarce resources within these communities.
Today, Indian high quality products and low-cost technologies are finding their way into every country of the world. Most of these products are, interestingly, manufactured in the rural areas, not cities, of India. Nigeria can learn from the Indian Experience and use such to develop a framework for encouraging rural entrepreneurship in the country. The unique Indian model of promoting and incubating grassroots innovations for rural enterprises and livelihood generation has no parallel. The model is based on developing home grown solutions and indigenous technologies that have significance and could be adapted in the Nigerian context. The empowerment of Indian rural women by promoting micro financing through women self help groups (SHG) is another model which is relevant to Nigeria. The rural villages in India are witnessing great transformation through rural enterprises run by women self help groups.

I applauded the project as innovative when I first saw it and I still feel the same way. However, in hindsight; seeing the village idea shown by @Tushbobo"s photos, I ask.... Will the village be able to withstand a tsunami or other natural disasters that might be from the ocean??

What ever you wear, you have to be confident about it. I don't think its colour riot. I even got complements about the way I dressed for the two days.

I will provide a picture at the end of the conference.

Thanks.

LoveAmaka88: Do you have the full grey suit?

If not, black blazer, black belt, black shoes, with the grey pants, silver jewelry(watch, ring...whatever), light colored shirt (lavender or light blue would be great), darker tie but not black or grey(dark blue, dark purple, patterned). . . in my humble opinion

or go buy pants that will work

Thank you ma'am.

I have a grey suit aside from the pant and that is what I wore today. I have all silver accessories and light green shirt(glo like) and dark green tie (Nigerian green-like). I got black shoe and belt too. However, it just occurred to me now that I wore grey today and it will just look like I swapped a grey suit for a black one as the grey pant looks like the grey suit too.

Gosh!!

Thanks Ma'am.

Please I need your help people.

I have to attend a conference in V.I. tomorrow and next tomorrow and I intend to wear suits on both days. The problem is that I suddenly found out that the pant to the black suit that I intend to wear on Wednesday is no where to be found. How that happened I can't say. However, I have grey, brown and black pants available. The black pant is out of it, but I need advice about the brown and grey.

Please which is advisable, I prefer the grey, but don't know what colour shirt and tie to wear with it.

Please help a brother, so I don't get arrested by the fashion police or my photo ends up on NL as a way never to dress.

Thanks.

Finally......

I make front page after being on Nairaland from October 2008. I should throw a party considering the way people go gaga about being the first to comment or making frontpage...
The moment I saw this breaking news on CNN, I knew I had to post it because it is front page material and I am not disappointed.

Am not complaining about never making frontpage before though, because I haven't posted anything that is worth it. Nonetheless, I am glad to have joined the league of front page makers and I hope my bank account will be credited with the due funds that warrants so much ecstasy at making FRONTPAGE....

She shud start spreadn her gadamn message from home......blaady amebor!!!!!!

This shouldn't make you sad, its the reality of what our brothers from different parts of the country had caused in other people's countries. Thats the reality we have to face.

I had heard this story of carrying a green passport and being suspected at every airport and I'm glad I heard that before travelling abroad, so I was prepared. At the end of June this year, I had to come to India for a course, it was my first time outside Nigeria. After alighting from the plane, I was in the first 10 passengers to reach the checkout counters, but I left last..... After more than 200+ other passengers who met me there. My passport was brandied around, I was asked several irritating questions, my papers were checked and rechecked and it was frustrating. Really it was....

But, having heard about how my brothers, carrying the same green passport as mine have gone to other nations to swindle them, sell drugs to them, beat up their citizens for looking at them somehow (recent Nigerian like me in the UK, hitting a 16 year old) etc. I was prepared for anything. I kept smiling and feeling good with myself, watching them run agitatedly with my passport and enjoying the ensuing drama. Since I knew I was clean, all my papers were complete and I had no illegal stuff on me, I was confidently watching them, waiting for the drama to pan out before calmly collecting my beloved green passport and walking to collect my luggages, my head held high and their gazes accompanying me. I guess they were disappointed not to catch me for anything....

I don't blame them, not at all. BECAUSE its not their fault... Its my BROTHERS' fault.

@ All

I am the person who needs the help of a volunteer web designer. I was very reluctant to post this on Nl because as @ Dual Core posts above 'maybe' Nigeria is not just there yet for volunteer-powered projects. I asked @ Kuyt to help with finding someone who can help, and thats how we got here.

We may not be used to volunteerism, but then, there is always a beginning; how about it begins here

As @ Sology requested....

The project is to economically empower street children using fruit farming and the processes involved in bee keeping as tools. The project will be a holistic approach to tackling the issue of street children in that it starts from taking them off the streets, taking care of their medical and basic needs, giving them literacy skills using non-formal education, livelihood skills using farming and bee keeping, business skills of basic book keeping and social etiquettes, sourcing for micro financing to enable them start their own enterprises and eventually reintegrate them back into the community as positive contributors to the society.

I am presently on a scholarship, training in India for this project and am due back home in January. In the institution where we are training, we have opportunities to fund raise for our projects. That I need a website is an understatement, it is a must have. I need to show my seriousness to donors, I need to create publicity and hype for the project even before leaving here. Obviously, I can't do it alone, I need help.

I have registered the domain name through GNBO - Upperlink and I just created a wordpress account, thats all I have done.

What I need is a good designer who is willing to volunteer for a good cause.

Thank You.
Politics / Re: Lagos Sued For Proposed N500 Toll On Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge by popoyeh(m): 7:13am On Nov 27, 2012
Not saying it is right or wrong, but I think it is an option specifically designed for the 'elites' who transport between Lekki and Ikoyi, specifically Old Ikoyi and I doubt if 500 Naira is too much for these set of people.

Once the bridge opens and the so called elites use that route, it will invariably reduce the traffic on the expressway for other road users. I am not one of the elites, I reside in Lagos Island and I don't have a car, but hopefully someday, I'll be able to pay the toll on the bridge too, without bathing an eyelid.

Politics / Re: What Are You Doing To Improve Nigeria? by popoyeh(m): 5:47pm On Oct 29, 2012
What I am doing to improve Nigeria is that I have come to India on a 7 months training course to enable me come back home and start a project to cater for the numerous street children in Lagos.

While here; On Saturday, two days ago, I was honoured to speak at the AGM and Elections of the Friends of Nigeria Association, Trivandrum, Kerala. India. The association consists of about 60 Indians who have worked in Nigeria before. Some came back to India as recently as 2 weeks ago, after spending 50 years working in Nigeria, while most of them have been back in India for as far back as 30 years ago, but they all have fond memories of our Nation. Most of them were elderly men and women with grey hairs, who have worked in different parts and different sectors of our country's economy .

I met Indian ladies who spoke to me in clear Yoruba with the right accents and who were speaking our Pidgin English as if say na Ajegunle dem grow up.

I was asked to speak to them about the present state of the Nation and I spoke for 15 minutes. I felt on top of the world hearing these people talk passionately about my country.

They all had mostly good things to say about our country and the people. The eldest member of the organisation said he hasn't seen any people in all his travels round the world who are as accepting and accommodating as Nigerians.

These people are as troubled as any Nigerian could be about the state of our nation today and about the inability of our leaders to take our nation where we rightly belong among the comity of Nations.

At the end of the day, I was presented with the autobiography of "Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi" whom the world know as "Mahatma Gandhi" and who Indians favourably call "Gandhiji". The autobiography is titled 'The Story of My Experiments with Truth'.

I will forever cherish the book, because it was given to me by people from another Nation and Continent, but who truly are Nigerians at heart.
