DISCLAIMER The Nigerian Army (NA) has been notified of an online video footage making the rounds in the social media, showing some persons in military fatigue torturing and mutilating an individual. The video footage is not only capable of deceiving unsuspecting members of the public into believing that the men in the footage are members of the NA, engaged in the ongoing counter insurgency operations in the North East, but a deliberate effort to promote a culture of violence in the society by creating an erroneous impression that it is a legitimate action by troops. It is therefore crucial to refute and properly inform the public on the said footage. Preliminary investigations reveal that the said footage has been on the social media for quite a long time and is not originated by troops of the NA. Very importantly, the uniform of NA troops deployed in the North East is the Nigerian Desert Camouflage, while that of other operations around the country is the Nigerian Woodland Camouflage. Evidently, the military fatigue worn by the criminals is a far variation from the uniforms adorned by own troops in the various theatres of operation. The NA therefore, wishes to clearly inform the general public that the video being circulated does not have any connection with its operations. Those in the footage are not troops of the NA and do not represent any operation of the NA. The video is circulated by mischievous elements aiming to tarnish the good image and reputation of the NA, in order to create mistrust in the minds of the public. It must be reiterated that as a responsible organisation, the NA conducts its operational activities in line with extant rules of engagement and respect for fundamental human rights. The NA therefore wishes to distance itself from the outrageous video and reassure the public that the NA under the leadership of the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Faruk Yahaya will continue to discharge its roles of securing the territorial integrity of the nation and aid to civil authority professionally and in consonance with extant laws and international best practice. Bukarti further said the death of Shekau was a heavy blow on the terrorist faction under his leadership and doubt if the new leader has the capacity to do what Shekau did during his reign of terror across the northeast region. The Nigerian Army says its troops operating along Mokwa-Jebba road intercepted a fleeing bandit in a vehicle travelling from Zuru to Ibadan during a stop-and-search operation. The bandit was arrested on Sunday. The army’s spokesman, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja. Mr Nwachukwu explained that the “vigilant” troops spotted an occupant of the vehicle, who claimed to be “Sgt. Aminu Sule.” He added that the suspect had a pair of camouflage, military boots, a knife and substance suspected to be charms. He said on further interrogation, the suspect disclosed that he was travelling to Ogbomosho and further claimed that the uniform and boots belonged to his brother, who was a soldier. According to the army, the suspect was fleeing from the ongoing military operations in Niger to a safe haven. The army statement further said the troops handed over the fleeing bandits to the police at Mokwa for further investigation. “The heat on bandits and other criminal elements in Niger has caused them to start fleeing to supposed safe havens. Members of the public, particularly around Niger and contiguous states are, therefore, enjoined to be vigilant and report any suspected movement of fleeing bandits to security agencies,” said the statement. It added that the Chief of Army Staff, Maj.-Gen. Be Selfless, Patriotic in the Discharge of your Duties - COAS Charges Troops* *...As he tours 82 Division Area of Responsibility The Chief of Army Staff Maj Gen Faruk Yahaya have charged the troops of 82 Division Nigerian Army to remain selfless and disciplined in the discharge of their duties. He made this assertion during his address to troops today 22 June 2021 at Abakpa Cantonment Enugu. Gen Yahaya, who was on his maiden operational visit to 82 Division Area of Responsibility said his administration would provide troops with the requisite support including improved welfare and equipment to discharge their responsibilities effectively. In his welcome address, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division, Maj Gen Taoreed Lagbaja expressed the commitment of the Division to tackle all threats to national security in South Eastern Nigeria. He lauded the COAS' concern for the wellbeing of troops and timely operational visit to the Division Area of Responsibility, adding that the visit will shore up troops' morale as they perform their duties. Earlier, the COAS had commissioned a remodelled Quarter Guard building, which provides office and accomodation for troops on duty. He commended the GOC for executing the project and urged the end users to utilize the facility to improve their professional output. Similarly, Gen Yahaya paid a courtesy visit to Ground Training Command of the Nigerian Air Force. He commended the synergy existing between the Nigerian Army and the Air Force, pledging to sustain it for the success of military operations. He expressed appreciation for the 'fantastic job the NAF is doing in support of Land forces in the fight against insurgency and banditary'. sizzorchan:Bro, i get what you meant. But about giving these kids choices, its very different than what you think. I happened to live in rural kano for more than a year. A place where you couldn't access mobile network most of the time. I lived among almajiris. I noticed something. Every kid goes to an islamiyya. From a tender age, you get to be soaked into the fundamentals of Islam. Each islamiyya has its scholars. An each scholars wants to have more followers. So some scholars manipulates the teaching of Islam to change the idealogy of the kids. My point is alot of people in that rural area don't mind joining ISWAP. They hate boko haram cause it kills Muslims. Those kids wanna join those terrorists organisations because they feel its the right way. They feel its an obligation. Don't get me wrong. I'm Muslim too. Stormtrooper11: I'm sorry, but I feel as though you have a very limited understanding of the dynamics at play, especially pertaining to the insurgency and the general disposition of the average almajiri in the North. The lot of them dont even know anything about the ideological differences between ISWA and JAS, nor do they have a clear picture of the conflict in the NE. Most of them are students of "fiqh" and "sunnah" of which the vast majority of the teachings in the curriculum run against the ideologies of non-state actors in the NE. shadowprimezero:I understand your point. Let me clarify my write up. The average Northern Nigerian Almajiri is in the quest to gain more Islamic knowledge. In the process, most of them at a young age leave their families in this quest. Most of this Almajiris don't wanna hurt no one. They got no business with terrorism and politics. But some, i repeat, some Mallams and Scholars give them a twisted ideology. They don't preach the undiluted fundamentals of Islam to the Almajiris. These corrupt mallams and scholars, whose quests are to have more followers and power lure and twist the Almajiris to his will. In Kano, people classify terrorists as the same. But with the advent of ISWAP, i have met few locals talking about Albarniwi. You have to understand that Mohammed Yusuf had vast support initially because he wasn't violent. He didn't hurt locals. These locals i met dealt with drugs. There is a line drug "highway" from Zinder to Kano. This line supplies bandits in the region to and fro. This is bigger than what we think. My point is the average Almajiri isn't a bad person. Its the system that makes him a potential weapon. 3 Likes |

Gunshots rented the Obelawo area along Ikirun road in Osogbo, capital of Osun State on Tuesday night when three soldiers invaded a police post in the area to free their colleague detained by policemen. The Nation gathered the gunshots led to palpable tension in the area as residents scampered for safety. A source close to the police post, who pleaded not to be named, told The Nation policemen had arrested some suspected cultists and kept them in the custody. He said: “One of the suspected cultists that were arrested is related to a soldier. The man (soldier) came to the station in the afternoon on Tuesday to secure administrative bail for his brother. “During interaction with the policemen, an argument ensued and the soldier was put inside the custody with the cultists. “However, he had communicated his colleagues informing them that he had been detained in the police post.” It was learnt that three soldiers, armed with knives and wearing camouflage vests, invaded the police post around 8pm to forcefully free their detained colleague. Another source said: “The policemen started shooting to the air to scare the soldiers but when they observed that they were resolute, they fired bullets on the three soldiers which did not penetrate. “The policemen in the station fled their station as the soldiers chased them away from the station. “The soldiers returned to the station and freed their colleague.” Osun Police spokesman, SP Yemisi Opalola, confirmed the incident to The Nation. She said: “Suspects who claimed they are military men from Ede took the suspected cultist away to Ede Military Barrack.
