Some companies only recruit from certain universities for their graduate trainee programs. A top HR of one bank once mentioned it in a training i was attending.

As a job seeker or regular individual with a degree, have u ever been discriminated because of the kind of university you attended..or do u believe one can be discriminated not because of a CGPA or grade of degree but because of the kind of university he or she attended

With the huge competition in getting admitted to high ranked schools like UNILAG, UNN and the likes...

Are there a bit of disadvantage for students who end up switching to less competitive universities..

Am talking about schools like maybe Gombe state university to pursue probably a good course like pharmacy which they couldnt study in the high ranked schools and eventually come out with good results..
Gombe has exceptionally equipped laboratories. Is jt true?

Do not bother. E go soon happen. Job no dey no be a matter of university

Well, all I can say is that if there's a job opening in nnpc, Exxon Mobile, agip and d likes, and a 3rd class geology graduate of oau applies for d job with his contemporaries with first class from other universities, that oau geology graduate would definitely av an upper hand and would be considered before d others

Depends on what angle you're coming from.

1) If its based on bants and yabs from friends this would be a point
2) If it's based on promotion or salary scale, it's not a point cos there's no more dichotomy between HND and BSc talkless of Big School BSc vs Small School BSc
3) If it's on general employment issue I'll ask u are u a Nigerian or you're just waking up? Jobs generally these days is based on who you know (connection) or what u can offer (technical skills). After stage of application, nothing else counts.
There is still dichotomy between hnd n bsc, I doubt some private companies will implement the law signed by the Senate.

You are right. Cause some professors from Harvard can't stand on the same podium with a university drop-out like Bill Gates.

Make I no lie to you, employees don't care. Make sure the course is accredited and you come out sound, good results and good skills. Bro forget your school name. Build relevant skills in your field.
Re: Discrimination Because Of The Kind Of University Attended. by Ruthless1(f): 9:44pm On Sep 17, 2021
Just make sure you attend a school with very strong alumni. Keyword 'very'.
Re: Discrimination Because Of The Kind Of University Attended. by Nobody: 9:45pm On Sep 17, 2021
I will be sincere with you. If a private pharmaceutical company wants to recruit pharmacists, they would rather pick a pharmacist from Uniben, UI, UNN OAU, than pick one who finished from Gombe state University, except your fellow job seekers also finished from a state University.

However, in a Government setting, it doesn't matter. Just know someone. Even if you finish from any state University, you will be employed. If you are not employed in a government hospital, it will not be due to you graduating from a State University. It will be due to your lack of "connection" or your "connection" not being strong enough!

However, I want to guess you are a Northerner. If so, you don't have to worry na. You can easily be employed in the North where you are. Infact, Northerners who read medical related courses hardly come down to the South to look for job.

The university you attend don't really matter it is what you as a person can offer that matters.

I have seen a company that employed an HND holder over a Degree holder here in Abuja and they both attended the interview but the HND holder was able to prove his worth and was able to convince the interviewer that he knew what he was doing while Degree holder was unable to.

Your intelligence is what they need not the school you graduated from.

Many of you think school is a joke. You think spending four years within the four walls of a particular university doesn't impact the lives of its graduates. Self-determination is key but the environment where you grow matters. You cannot compare an average OAU graduate to a Gombe State University graduate on any reasonable index. You will always see the difference.

To Op, if you can, please, attend a good school. It doesn't only help you academically, it exposes you in all spheres of live. You will be far ahead, mingle with bright brains and have an early direction. Although, this doesn't guarantee wealth, it puts you in that pedestal.

Employers dont think the way you think. Your grade qualify you for short listing into an advertised position regardless of the institution you attended, now depend on you to proof yourself. Except you cant proof ur worth. I have seen a nassarawa state university student "dusted" students from unilag, UI, Uniben etc in an aptitude test. Guess it's not an inferiority complex on ur part.Perhaps,u are intimidated by student from Ife, UI, Uniben at test venue.....

I've never been discriminated against. Only inferiority complex and the fact that you do not recognize your value will make you accept such. It is only in a backward place like Nigeria that the institution you attended will shape your destiny, but I'm glad that it is changing now.

I attended a State University established less than 15years ago, and I tell you, I've never attended an interview where I didn't ace the job and tower above most candidates especially from First-generation universities. Even in this my current job, I was the only candidate chosen above other candidates. Part of the reasons? Diversity in knowledge. Education has become far more advanced than La-cram La-pour in our ivory towers.

Dedicate some time regularly for studying, open the internet, read about topics, subjects, themes and topical issues beyond your discipline and you'll be amazed at what you know, and only then, you'll not be discriminated at.

Allow the applicants to show themselves first. In my field, a lot of graduates from the federal universities are shamelessly incompetent.
