Faults on a sunday(PART B)








Derek felt the need to move almost without end as anxiety course through his veins as if it hitched a ride on his blood cells...., worried he dialled Erica's number again, when she didn't answer, his heart leaped into his chest as different thoughts begin to cross his mind.., he swallowed hard and dial her number again, he waited impatiently with throbbing heart, when she didn't answer, the thought that Nerissa had done something evil to her overcloud his brain....

In that moment he looked up, look up at the man he had come to see minutes ago when he got tired of just sitting in Erica's house and waiting for her.., that very moment she had told him Nerissa visited her at the hospital, he knew something was going to go wrong......

"My man..."Lawrence, the man Derek had visited said as he engaged in a handshake and a light pat at the back....

"I never knew I was going to see you again...."Lawrence said walking to sit on another chair after Derek sat down.....

Derek sucked on his teeth, Lawrence had always been his plug in times of trouble, he's more like a saviour he calls whenever he's having difficulties with anyone associated with confraternity and in return, he gives him money and business suggestion...

"I must say this is really a surprise..."Lawrence said...."Who's the target this time..?"

Derek thought of Erica and the fact that he hasn't heard from her for the past one hour was bothering him..., he heaved a deep sighed and refocus his gaze on Lawrence...."There's no target this time....."

Lawrence raise his brows before he reclined his back on the chair......

"I need a favour."Derek added..

Lawrence tilt his head forward before speaking..."Favour...., what favour?"

Derek swallowed hard as more thought of Nerissa doing something to Erica made way to his head..., he thought of all the people he felt Nerissa must have killed and it made his spines shiver....

"I need a gun.."Derek sad remembering what the old woman at the hospital had told him....

"A gun..!"Lawrence reiterates....., he scoffs before he continued...."Are you serious...?"

"I am....., I need to kill someone..."

"Mann.."Lawrence dragged between his teeth, shocked by Derek statement......"You're not that kind of person..."

"Am desperate Lawrence...."Derek cut in...."I need a gun and I need it now.."

"Okay man calm down..."Derek said...."First thing.., what the hell do you need a gun for...?"

Derek almost hissed at the question...."I can't tell you the details now.., I just need the gun.. "

"Okay I get it.."Lawrence riposte with shrugged shoulders..."But you're not this kind of person.., you bring the job and we do the killing if necessary...."

"This isn't about a job man.."Derek chided, a little hitched in his voice...., realising he sounded harsh, he inhale before he continued...."This is a personal stuff I need to sort out myself.."

"With a gun...?"Lawrencs asked...

Annoyance swept across Derek's face, the fact that he couldn't speak to Erica knowing she's with the devil angered him more...."Are you helping me or not...?"

Lawrence sighed and lean his back on the chair...."Fine, I'll give you a pistol but you can't be caught with it..., I spend a lot buying these guns.."

"I'll pay back every cent if it goes missing...."

Lawrence nodded in agreement...."I hope you know what you're doing man.., you sure its something we can't help you with..."

"Trust me.."Derek said.."This is a personal shit...."

"Fine..., I'll give you a gun..."

The approaching footsteps clip-clopped down the bleached tile hallway, the thugs couldn't imagine any of them wearing such impractical shoes, and they were right. As the clattering noise came to a halt the pastor's wife poked her head around the corner before she walked into the room......

"Happy Sunday mummy..."Jailer, one of the two men who have abducted Maxwell said...

A wry smile that quickly disappeared as it came surrounded Beatrice lips...., frown lines encroached on her face the moment she took her gaze from Jailer and focused it on Maxwell who was laying on the floor....

"Is he unconcious....?"Beatrice asked walking towards hm..

"He has been like this since we knocked him out in the vehicle....."Mano, the other thug replied...

"Wake him..."Beatrice said glancing at her wrist watch.....

Jailer stepped out of the room and later arrived with a bucket of water.., without hesitation, he poured the water on Maxwell's body....

Maxwell quickly bounce back to reality as water drip into the floor from every part of his body..., his sight went blur for a slight second and it made him wipe his face with his palm..., when his sight was restored, he shift his gaze towards the people in the room with him., he shivered and flinched, the shock making him recall what had happened earlier, someone had sprayed in his face..., he look around the room, his heart throb with irregular beats as he return his gaze to them....

"You..."Maxwell mutter with pants breathe when he recognised pastor Alfred's wife......

"Yes me....."Beatrice replied, a mirthless smile following her words.....

"You're the pastor's wife.."Maxwell said with a cringe at the two men beside her...

"Yes...."Beatrice said..."My reputation they say precedes me....., my reputation a swine like you was at the verge of taking down....."

Fear licked at Maxwell's stomach..."I don't understand.."He said, his heart pounding with irregular beats..."Why am I here...?"

"Oh...., are you asking me that..?"

Maxwell breathe heavily but didn't say a word.....

"Would you love me to remind you the stupid video you made...., you stupid stupid boy..."

Maxwell's thoughts quickly catch up, when he made the video, he never thought they were going to retaliate even though the video was intended to ruin the pastor.....

"Your husband scammed us.."Maxwell stated

"Scammed..!"Beatrice reiterates...."What do you know about scam...., when my husband had his first member, the likes of you were in the streets begging...., do you in you little thinking knows how far we've come..."

"Then tell him to give us our money back..."

Beatrice scoffs and fixed her gaze on Jailer..."Shoot him..."

Cold chills rain down Maxwell spines when Jailer pointed a gun at him..., he didn't allow his head to formulate a thought before he shouted...."No wait..."

"Wait....!"Beatrice reiterates...."For what exactly...?"

"I made a mistake..."Maxwell said with a cringe at Jailer who was still pointing the gun at him..."I was under the influence of alcohol when I made that video....."

"Oh really. ."Beatrice said taking a step closer to him...

"Am sorry. .."Maxwell begged with renting heart..

"No.., you'll be sorry if you don't take that video down in five hours.."

"How would I possibly do that..., the video is everywhere. .."

"Exactly....., you're going to make another video and you're going to say some men of God put you to the task..., you'll say my husband, pastor Alfred and God servant on earth is innocent of the accusations...."

Maxwell hesitated in replying but quickly speak out when Jailer threatened him with the gun again.....
"Alright fine, I'll do it.., I'll make another video and say exactly what you've said. ."

"Good..."Beatrice said glancing at the time........"And remember, this discussion never happened, if you tell anyone or refuse to make right your wrong, these gentlemen will pay you another visit and they won't be as nice as they are now.., I'll be awaiting your video. ."....

Maxwell took a deep breathe to calm his panic as he the question that kept hitting his head came bouncing around again.. how the hell did his life become a hell hole..."

"Gentlemen.."Beatrice said returning her gaze to the thugs..."I need to be in church now.., you know what to do with him.."

The thugs nodded, she stole one last glance from Maxwell before she walked out from the building. .

Jailer crunch down to meet Maxwell eye level......"There are people you meet in this world and mess around with and they'll let you go free..., there are some you offend with what you say and people will applaud you, and there are others you offend and unknowingly drag trouble itself to your doorstep and this is one of it......, my advice man, don't be a blabber mouth, learn to mind your business, think carefully before you talk...."

"Really, you're really lecturing me.., you kidnapped me...."

"And I'll be the one to kill you if you don't make that damn video.."

Maxwell's stomach clenched as fear twisted in his gut..., he took his gaze from Jailer and pondered on how his life has become such a mess....

Her grief came in waves replacing a feeling of normalcy with raw tears that sheen down her cheeks leaving her desolate until there was no strength left in her to reconnect and weave herself anew into the fabric of living....., Erica just sat down looking at Jasmine dead body, her mind overcloud with profound sadness as the event that have happened few minutes ago kept replaying in her head over and over..., she lost track of time as she assure herself there is no chance of future happiness. .., her best friend is dead, her throat slit right in front of her..., even now the good memories was far from her as an onslaught of tears took hold of her, everything was mute around her and the only thing she could hear was her own heartneat and her scream when the mermaid slit her friend's throat......

A hand pulled her from behind snapping her from her day dream, a break in the moment of agony......, she bounced back into reality and once again delve into the painful realisation of her friend's dead...., when she heard voices, she spun around, only then did she noticed she hasn't been alone, the site workers on their coverall and helmet were watching her with doubtful eyes, that heavy gaze that is been cast on a killer.., just behind them were three policemen and two nurses rolling strecher from the elevator....

Dread twisted in her gut, she look down at herself and her heart pounded hard in her chest realising she's the with knife and her clothes and body is stained with blood.. Jasmine blood.....

She tried to breathe as she look at Jasmine dead body again surrounded with a pool of blood.., realising air could not enter her lungs, the knife fell from her hand and clattered on the ground before she crunched back down and once again give way to more tears..., she sobbed heavily with heavy breathes, the pains seared across every part of her body...

Some of the site workers pulled her away from Jasmine's body as the health workers carried the lifeless body into the stretcher and made way to the elevator. ...

Erica cried out as she see her friend body been carried away, she tried to follow them but the site workers held her firmly...

One of the policemen picked the knife and took a step towards her..

"I need to be with my friend..."Erica shouted amidst pants breathe...

"She's your friend. ..?"The policeman asked..

"She killed her.."Erica shouted..."She killed her.."

"Who killed her..?"The policeman asked

Erica didn't say a word but rather she let go of more tears letting them roll bead by bead down her cheeks.....

"You're under arrest..."The policeman said

"She killed her.."Erica blared out...

"The knife was in your hand...."The policeman said..."You killed her.."

Shocked, Erica staggered backwards as the other policeman moved towards her with an handcuff.., Erica didn't resist, she just stood brooding over the moment Nerissa slit Jasmine throat while they handcuff her....

She kept mute, totally lost on what to say, mounted in sadness until they dragged her into the elevator.......

Smouldering with resentment, Derek entered his compound.., he look around and noticed the compound is just the way he had left it when he had to run away...., he felt a flash of irritation when he brood over the event that made him run, he grope his fingers around the gun behind him, tuck between his waist band and trouser..., he hesitated a bit before he pushed the house open and entered the house. .., to his surprise inside the house has been arranged and properly swept, even the arrangement of his chairs has been changed again..., he took a step inside not bothering to close the door....

When he heard the creaking of a door, his hand quickly reach for the gun behind hm but he didn't pull it out.., he just stood and watch.., waited for someone to come out from behind close doors..., when the creaking sound became loud...., his heart hammered hard against his chest with irregular beats before Nerissa came out from the kitchen with a plate of food...

Rage quickened Derek's blood when he sighted her...

"Oh Darling, you're home.."Nerissa said dropping the food on the dinning. ..."I prepared your favourite, Care to join..."

Anger burn hot and unstoppable in Derek's stomach. ..., he hated her guts....."Where is Erica..?"He queried, his anger bleaked in his voice....

"That isn't a question a husband who had stayed away from his wife should be asking..."

"Where is she..?"Derek growled taking a step closer to her..

"Probably in jail.."Nerissa chided. ..."Haven't you seen the news, they say she killed her friend. ., what's her name again... oh I remember, it's Jasmine...., that sweet girl so full of life had to die like that... it's a shame..."

Derek's anger spiked as he felt something bad has happened to Erica, without hesitation he pulled the gun out and pointed it at her..

Nerissa sighed and refocus on her food...

"Where is Erica. .?"Derek growled holding the gun firmly. ....

"You're going to shoot me...?"Nerissa asked returning her gaze to him.."You're really going to shoot your wife because of that Christian trash. .."

Derek knew any moment he's going lose it...., eyes hard rimmed, he glare at her as she stood up from the chair to walk to him..
He took a few steps backwards as he look daggers at her..

"What have you done to her...?"

"What you done to me..."Nerissa fling back. .."You came to me, you made love to me, and you promise to always be with me and no gutter trash is going to come between that bond..."

Infuriated, Derek cocked the gun and circle his finger around the condenser. ...

"Put that thing away..., your gun is useless, it cannot harm me.."

A fresh swell of rage rose in Derek, everything Nerissa has done to him began to come like flashes in his head, it annoyed him and finally he lost it.. without hesitation, he pulled the trigger. ..

The bullet flew out the chamber and little by little it began to close the distance between it and the target, in a split second, it pierced into Nerissa's stomach. ......

Nerissa flinched as the bullet penetrated into her body. ..., for a second she was alright...., suddenly pains throbbed inside her and black blood pooped from the bullet hole. ....

She quickly staggered back almost loosing her balance and pressed her stomach, she touch the bullet hole and rase her hand to her face..., her eyes widened with extreme shock when she saw the blood on her hand....

"How is this possible. ..?"She ask amidst pants breathe. ..

"Salt...."Derek said..."I rubbed the bullet on salt...."

When Nerissa tried to walk towards him.., he fired again...

The bullet hit Nerissa’s shoulder tearing away chunk of her skin...

Pain seared across her eyes as she screamed an stumbled backwards.......

"What have you done to Erica...?"Derek growled attempting to fire again. .

When Nerissa didn't reply but glare at her, his anger welled up in his chest....."I hate you. .."He said..."And I curse the day I meant you, nothing will give me the satisfaction of seeing you go back to the hell hole you crawled out from...."

Nerissa scoffs then she burst into a taunting mirthless laughter, blood pooped from her mouth, she spat the blood out before she raise her gaze to him again.....
"You fool.."She sneered. ...."You would be dead if it wasn't for me..., You need me to survive. ..."
Derek scoffs. .."That's funny. .."

She try to take a deep breathe but pain Mount on her tearing her insides..."I have seen your future. .., you'll die in jail, the only person that can save you is me., you need me..."

"Go to hell..."Derek said and once more circled his finger round the trigger, before she could utter another word, he pulled the trigger, a bullet straight to her forehead. .
Blood splashed around as her body landed with a thud on the ground.....

Terrified and angry, he shot her again and again until he ran out of bullet. ...

He threw the gun down and crunched down in thoughts of Erica. ..., he bow his head as different questions bounced around in his head...., just then he remenbered what she had said, Rica was probably arrested, he quickly raise his head up, terror thundered on him when he saw black blood flowing on the tiles but Nerissa's body wasn't there.., startled, he circled back almost hitting his head on the wall behind....

His heart raced and his stomach fluttered with fear when he look around and she was no where to be found...., he quickly stood up with intentions to run and that was when the door burst open...

The shock threw him backwards. ..., his heart race with tremendous speed. .., every part of him went numb before he noticed it wasn't Nerissa that had open the door but a different person, a different person but with a gun.....

"So this is you, you bastard. ....."The intruder yelled before she pulled a gun out and pointed it at him...

Struck between running and staying. .., Derek stood as the face of terror came crushing hard on him..., his thoughts catch up and quickly he recognised her..


"Caroline. .."He mutter..

"Yes Caroline...."She replied angrily...."The bitch you made barren...."

He look towards his gun and grunt heavily realising his bullet is finished.. ."Okay calm down, put down the gun, we can talk about this.."

"Talk about what..?"She riposte..."How you slept with me, impregnated me and gave me a concoction to drink..., that concoction made me lose my womb..., I've been rejected, pushed out of my husband's house..."

"Caroline that was a long time ago and what I gave you was just to rid you of the pregnancy, I never made you barren. .., you should shift tha blame somewhere else.."

"I was a teenager. .."She yelled..."You deceived me and ruined me of my innocence, then you ruined me of everything and whenever I tried to reach you, you give deaf ears to me...."

"You need to calm down...."Derek said brooding over the past.....

"No.."She hollered.."I am done calming down..., the police are outside. ..."

"What...?"Derek blare out. ..."You brought the police to my house..."

"You ruined my life and this is why I've taken this decision. .."

"What decision..?"

Derek eye enlarged when Caroline face herself with the gun.., Derek shouted and try to stop her but in a split second later, she pulled the trigger and blow her brains out.....

The gun sound sent Derek shivering, just then he remenber what he had told her, the police are outside, he quickly rushed towards the window and there he saw them tiptoeing towards his door.....

Horror swept across his face when he remenber Nerissa's words, he'll die in jail...
He glance down at Caroline dead body with Nerissa's words bouncing around in his head...., he didn't wait for signal from his brain before he ran towards the door to lock it before the police could pulled the knob down....

"This is the police, open the door. ...?"A baritone voice sound from outside. ..

Heart renting, Derek thought of all the possible things to do, he thought of opening the door but how would he explain a dead body in the house. ..., Nerissa is doing this to him and he wouldn't give her the satisfaction of seeing him in handcuff. .. no way.....

"Open the door..."A policeman shouted from outside....

Chased into a quandary, Derek thought of all possible way to escape, when one finally suffice, he quickly pick up Caroline's gun and began to head for the backdoor. .. He can't go to jail. .. God damn his future....
