Hello NL.
I'm going to keep this brief.

It started three weeks ago. my mum, who was walking normal with no problem suddenly could not walk. Her left leg began paining her severely that day. My mum was all in tears... She was rushed to the hospital where it was discovered that her sugar level was on the high side. The hospital gave drugs which stabilised it, at that point my mum was very weak, couldn't eat, each time she eat she throws up and also had some pain in the leg still. After a week in the hospital, we were then referred to a teaching hospital after a test showed that creatinine in her kidney was high.

The teaching hospital tried their best and I can say my mum is now okay. Except for the left leg. She can't still walk on it, the leg feels cold to touch with a little discolouration above the foot.

Doppler test showed that blood isn't really flowing through the leg. And they said they will need to amputate the leg to prevent the infection from growing to the other parts of the body.

Please I want to know if you know anyone who had similar condition and amputation was recommended but was later healed without need for amputation.

Please share your recommendations. I need my mum now more than before in my life. We are confused on whether to allow them to go on with the amputation or seek other alternatives.

Thank you very much.

Pls note that as at now, her sugar level, creatinine and other things are normal.
Sorry to hear this

Go meet other doctors,

Tell her to fast for 1 week only water or liquid she can drink.

The body can self heal that way

Abroad they would have let a vein from another part of the body to flow through that leg until it’s stabilized and it won’t have to be amputated but it will be very expensive. However I think you should go online, watch some of dr Jason fung videos on YouTube, read the diabetes code and also the obesity code. It’s gonna help your mum if you guys can practice some of the therapies recommended therein. Good luck

have you taken her to living church first before considering amputation? It really not nice how people don't seek the face of God first in a situation like this before making human decisions.

My dear sincere sympathy. Prosthesis is inexpensive. I guess your mother has a poorly controlled diabetes. Beyond your mum, all your sibs should periodically screen for DM. Definitely amputation is what she needs now. That foot must been gangrenous.

On the 21st of this month will make it exactly one year my Dad had similar case and his leg was eventually amputated.
My Dad had diabetes which he had been managing for over 10yrs before first quarter last year things were not properly handled and it resulted to a very tiny wound that eventually degenerated beyond the control of health centre to general hospital to federal medical centre all in Lagos before we landed at LUTH.
All the test you mentioned plus many more was carried out on my Dad. The Head of Endocrinology was on ground, Head of Surgical section was on ground Head of Emergency was on ground after all said and done it was concluded that the only option to safe his life was for the leg to be amputated thereby putting a stop to the circulation of infection to other parts of the body, it was a very tough decision to take but at the end of it all we had to agree for it to be done.
The leg was amputated as agreed and God took all the glory I must confess it was God all the way cox our eyes see things for hospital there. The medical personnels in LUTH are just too good cox the level of attention and professionalism accorded to us was just awesome (Again I belive it was God using them to act right), the cost implication was beyond the family again God showed up and everything went well.
The prosthesis is pf different types and quality the very best with good quality ranges from 500k to above 1million the last time I contacted those in charge but in LUTH they have a section that handles such as well.
So my brother I must confess to you that the amputation may be the only option as regards your mum's health challenge, the moment the surgery is done successfully, she will be relieved of those pains and she will be fine.
Above all, you need to be prayerful even with the surgery it takes the mercy and grace of God to get things right all through. I pray the voice of the blood of Jesus Christ will speak for your mum and over her life to bring her out of this in the name of Jesus Christ.
May the Lord see you through all this.

If there is a vascular surgeon, a bi-femoral bye pass may be considered first to re-establish proper blood flow to the limb. All the best to her

She will need insulin o. To be taken regularly. This is type 2 diabetes. Go to a reliable doctor. If her sugar level is well controlled, she won't need to go through that.

I'm a type 1 diabetic and am broke right now and unable to buy this expensive insulin. I've only eaten 4 times this week.

I also have malaria now that I can't treat well because no money. This life is not easy

CUT IT OFF FAST DON'T DELAY

Put your nose close to the skin of the leg. If it smells like dead flesh....cut it off fast.

Trust me. It's cheaper that way. I was there with my mom 3 years ago. She died.

dominique:

If gangrene bacteria (C. perfringens) has gotten into that wound then amputation is the ONLY solution. The tissues around the infected region would have died already and the necrosis will spread to other regions of the leg and rest of the body if it isn't removed. Op didn't show photos of the leg but for doctors to recommend amputation, that's the only viable solution. He should still seek for a second opinion though
Like I said in my comment my mum's elder sis suffered same fate , at a time it was reddish ,smelling and have this dark spot all over .
She was taken to the hospital and they said they'll amputate her. That her husband should come and sign.
We were many at the hospital that day and so someone came up with an idea to take her and go the ibile way.
Although they later go the traditional way. After sometime I saw her walking again gradually and I was surprised . was like see the leg they wanna cut in hospital ..!!!!

Your mum is diabetic but she has obviously not been taking care of the diabetes issue. One of the major complications of diabetes can be poor wound healing in the legs which can lead to severe infection and eventually gangrene. It seems the doctors think her foot may already be gangrenous. You guys can get a second opinion from another hospital if you want but if she has gangrene then there's no other option but to amputate.

My dear brother I strongly advise that you get a second and even third opinion on this before taking an irreversible decision. However, you need to act fast because delay could be deadly in such cases.

Also, We are living in a world of information now so take advantage of the internet and research your mom's condition and symptoms online so that you can make informed decisions about it.

Above all, let your family unite and pray fervently for God's mercy, He is merciful and can intervene in your situation.

May God have mercy on your mother.
