Probably

But it actually got some of us an avenue to earn a post graduate study here.... Apart from that... I think it's doesn't carry much weight outside the country...

Who told you Nigerians perform better abroad? Have you met the Indians or Chinese.

Indians are some of the people I doff my hat for. Those guys are doing well in IT, Finance, academia and medicine.
If not for indian tutorials on YouTube, one will graduate from a Nigerian University without knowing how LM35 looks like.

That's why I laugh when some people shout Nigerians make it everywhere. They've never met those Indians, pakis and Chinese. Those guys are all over the globe making it big and making impacts. .

Don't ever think of getting close to the United States if you feel EDUCATION is overrated.
That's my humble advice!

So one of my uncles that is based overseas is billed to come home this Xmas, as such a lot of cleaning and fumigation has been going on in his house in readiness for his come back.

I went this morning to supervise the work going on there. I went inside of the stores by the car house and saw this old metal cabinet and I decided to check what's inside. Lo and behold, I found in the midst of old paper files and debris my uncle's Nigerian certificates! Omo!

Rats has eaten some portions of the certificates. I scanned through and discovered that he was,by his Nigerian qualifications, below average. This is the same man that is an internationally sort after lawyer both in the country and overseas where he resides.

This got me wondering with so many questions on my mind:
1. Are certificates really overrated?

2. Does it really come a time in our lives (apart from death) when our certificates becomes irrelevant?

3. Is it not obsolete to measure ones intelligence based on exam performances? ( My uncle would have been jobless or better still a charge and bail lawyer at best going by his academic performance)

4. And why do Nigerians perform better in almost everything when the leave this country? Are we too stringent or is a reflection of our flawed system?

All the answers are in your questions. Meanwhile, he is doing well out there because he was well baked back here. Per results, the only guy in my set who is presently a SAN made a 3rd class. That says a lot. Those of us with second upper are not doing badly relatively but it is what it is.

The older you get, soft skills such as communication, leadership, empathy, emotional intelligence, project management, business development (ability to spot opportunities, sell your skill sets to close on these opportunities) etc are much more relevant than the technical skills you’re expected to gain mastery of in your youthful days.

In summary, soft skills trump certificates and qualifications as you advance in your career…

The class of degree a person graduates with is not the true reflection of that person's abilities.. some are divergent in nature and won't do the 'la cram la pour' or 'give me back direct' method most lecturers like.
In say 10-15yrs, go and look at those people, they'd have gone far cos they have that ability and will keep putting their gifts to use.

Disclaimer: This is not to discourage anyone from making good grades.. it's even better to be gifted and have good grades cos then, the sky won't just be your limit but your stepping stone.

Since you said he's a sort out lawyer, all he needs to get admission overseas is just his transcript.

Nigerian system of education will drain you to get the certificate but there will no equating job or financial freedom.

With certificate in Nigeria you'll need a strong hand to pass you through Jobs.

For me it's simple, Nigerians tend to perform better outside because the academic system of Nigeria is to frustrate not make.. we are being taught how to read and pass not to know.

Only additional skills to our certificate can make us stand out in this country. Everyday things gets worst.

No one cares whether you've first class or not you'll still pay to get job. Imagine paying a million and half to get a job that won't make you the same amount in a year. That's why we have more frustrated graduates which is not supposed to be..

My advice to any undergraduate or graduate is to learn a digital skill and become a freelancer at least you'll get paid by foreigners who understands the importance of time.

There are different digital skills out there.

Email marketing
Facebook ad
Instagram ad
YouTube marketing
Graphics design
Affiliate marketing
Amazon Kindle publishing

And lots of them..

Just focus on one and master it .. the fight no own should be again underpayment and unemployment..

I can help you get access to the course if you so wish.. get connected on WhatsApp for it.

PS: I will only help you get hands on the course then you do whatever you wish with it..

The reason why your uncle is a sought after lawyer despite his 'not so perfect' results is simple

He realized , early enough , that learning does not stop when you graduate. Learning goes on even after the degree has finished.

That is why he is a great lawyer....and a wise man.

@NoApology: Not necessarily. It depends on the profession or sector. There are some professions you can't practice in without a certificate of some sort. E.g, Law, Accountancy, Engineering, etc. While there are others that are more skills based, and where you can get by on account of your flair and aptitude. Eg Software programming, professional football, etc.

Nigeria of then is different from Nigeria of now. You could get a job with any degree plus your experience. The certificate still helped him a lot.

What ever you make of yourself after school is hardly dependent on your school performance, but more on how you can sell yourself. A lot of third class people with big mouth are doing very well in real life. School is NEVER a measure of life performance.

Largely because in the 1960's and 70's, the number of graduates was still far below the number of jobs. (Consider that less than 10% of Nigerians were in school in 1960, and that went down to less than 2% up North).

So any graduate graduating then got a job easily.(Back then a third class graduate got a job in the civil service instantly!)

Now? Number of graduates outstrips the number of available jobs...thanks to the success of our educaiton system in increasing the number of graduates. Then our economy isn't industry driven...which limits the number of jobs that can be created.
