Ladies and gentlemen, I have read many valid comments here, and I must say the issue of domestic violence is on the increase everyday. The society at large must take this as serious issue. The causes of domestic violence can never be exhausted as it ranges from financial, emotional, traditional, psychological, intellectual, cultural, familial and even spiritual in origin. Domestic violence happens to both genders, but in most cases, the female folks suffer lethal forms of it, may be because of their fragile nature (not all sha). I believe no man would love to see his own sister treated harshly by another man. Now putting the blame on marriage is not true at all. Marriage wasn't designed to be a war zone. Atleast we never read that the first couple on earth (Adam and Eve) threw blow on each other.

Now we all here will do our generation good if we address our values. What values do you uphold strongly as a man. What values do you uphold strongly as a lady.
Personally, I tell myself constantly that on no account should I lay my hands on a woman. The same way I tell myself that on no account should I rape a woman. So one way of not being an instrument to domestic violence is to strongly entrench it in our values. The truth is that offences will always arise either in relationship or marriage. Finally, if everyone that visits this thread make a strong decision today of never to be an instrument to domestic violence under any circumstance, I think the safety of someone's daughter or son out there is secured.

I quote the verse of psalm and proverbs to back my claim on anger.....that it takes someone who is genuinely save by God to be able to overcome temptation... Remember Moses was tempted and he was angry and the wisdom depart at that point...even Jesus Christ was tempted but He overcame by God grace...how much more a man or woman...wen I talk about anger..you have to settle down and read so as not to allow your emotional leads you astray......when a man or a woman tempt or provoke anyone they should expect the unexpected... because when anger comes in wisdom will depart...and it takes the grace to be an overcome.

2. Submission didn't pop up out of thin air in Paul's letter. It began as God's curse in Genesis 3 vs 16 and God never reverted that curse(unholiness) to a blessing(holiness). So try to open your eyes so you are not deceived by the opinions of men in the name of God.

3. Jesus Christ is God's New Covenant and Law that God calls you to come into agreement with Him on. As Jesus Christ told you in many places in His teachings, those who belong to Him are those who obey His teachings(commandments) - John 14 vs 15 - 25. He told you that His friends are those who do as He commands - John 15 vs 14. So when Jesus Christ commands that you not be angry with your brother, He expects your obedience, not meaningless excuses.

Until men and women learn how to raise their male children right just the same way they spend all their energies raising daughters, this nonsense will continue to happen. Also, until Nigerians stop this "You must marry" or "Marriage is a fixed deposit, you can't leave" culture you got going on, domestic abuse will continue to happen. As long as you keep stigmatizing unmarried women in the society, we will keep hearing these stories.

I just thank God everyday that I don't reside in Nigeria or Africa. Make I dey my dey for where I dey in the abroad. Nigerian culture is rooted in toxicity and abuse so I don't know why anyone is surprised. Leave if abuse is clearly present in your marriage or you can choose to die there. This is why domestic violence will not stop. Imagine all the insults you have rained on him simply for having an opinion. You may argue that insults do not equate physical harm, but this is reality for you.

Women are the ones who cry and wail most times, those raised by their mothers can tell you that, if a mother feeds the home for a day, she would make the immature children believe that the father isn't doing well at all and he leaves the home responsibilities for her.

The verse you quoted from references a Beginning. That Beginning was Genesis 2 vs 24 where God instituted marriage, however, because of the stubbornness of the heart of man, God cursed marriage in Genesis 3 vs 16 and since then divorce followed.

Mat 19:8:
"He said to them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so."
Jesus said:
1. The law of divorce was not from the beginning (as God designed it).
2. A few thousand years later +at the time of Moses) was when the law of divorce was given by Moses (not God)

3. No where did God curse marriage in Genesis. God cursed the man, the woman, the serpent, the earth. In fact, the woman was now made to be independent of the man in Genesis.
Gen 3:16:
"To the woman he said, I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; in sorrow you shall bring forth children; and your desire shall be to your husband, and he shall rule over you."

If Jesus said: from the beginning, it wasn't so about marriage, what else could it have meant?

Look carefully at what the verse says! Also consider the one marrying the divorcee may be without a divorce record of his/her own. So the issue is not with divorce, but instead with remarriage for the divorced.

If you look at the scripture closely, what Jesus was teaching was the permanence of marriage. Divorce by man is not recognised in heaven so that if anyone (married or single) married a divorced person, such commits adultery against the husband/wife of the divorced person.

Mar 10:11:
"And he said to them, Whoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, commits adultery against her."

Mat 5:32:
"But I say to you, That whoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causes her to commit adultery: and whoever shall marry her that is divorced commits adultery."


There is a difference between DIVORCE and SEPARATION!
Divorce is a permanent disunion of a union of marriage
Separation is a temporary disunion of the Union of marriage

I believe that it is in the interest of women to contribute economically as much as they can to the household. They actually earn respect by doing so.

Any man ready to have a successful marriage cannot expect to work 9am-6pm just like his wife and yet won't help his wife slice even onions in the kitchen to make dinner. Assisting with house chores is not being woman wrapper. Especially if both are very busy with their work.

We already know that there are cases where the woman is the breadwinner after the hubby lost his job. But stories of wife disrespecting hubby seems to be fairly common in such cases. Are these stories true or the man's loss of economic control is also an issue? Probably both,
