You have to be careful. This is your destiny and nobody can advise you better than yourself.

Are you passionate about Biochemistry or you just want a discipline that can guarantee you a job?

Why did you study Biochemistry? What is your class of degree?

There are many opportunities for a Biochemistry graduate. However, nepotism in Nigeria MUST affect your chances:

If you graduated with at least a 2:1 and you are 25 years or below then you can easily secure a job in the following organizations if you are good enough to pass Aptitude test & interview:

i. Audit firms: KPMG, ERNST & YOUNG, DELLOITE, PWC
ii. Banks
iii. Food Industries: Nigerian Breweries (M.SC required), Nestle, International Breweries, Coca Cola, Guiness Nigeria
iv. Pharmaceutical Industries as Sales Rep

Alternatively, if you are connected and know a big man in government:
i. Research Institutes (We have more than 30 in Nigeria & Biochemists are well positioned. You start as Research Officer II and grow and become a director)
ii. Monotechnic/Polytechnics as lecturer
iii. Federal Universities as lecturer (M.SC, PhD required)
iv. Government Agencies: DPR (as environmentalist), NSE (Graduate Trainee), NARICT, NILEST, NABDA, NAFDAC etc as Research officers
v. Teacher (PGDE required)

In Nigeria today, no discipline guarantees you a job, Medicine inclusive.

A yoruba graduate may secure a better paying job than a doctor.

I am a passionate Biochemist (B.SC, M.SC). Secured a job 8 months after my M.SC and today, I earn more than a professor of Medicine. Even a Matron cannot come close.

If you are a fresh graduate, it is time to ponder and tell yourself the truth.

You need to be patient, prayerful, diligent, and determined to succeed.

No profession be it Engineering, Nursing, Medicine will guarantee you success.

Can I DM You, Bro? I have a B.Sc in Biochemistry, an M.Sc in Biotechnology and it's been tough job hunting.
Thank you in anticipation.

Hmm if her brother is financially ok why not move her to uk to study nursing there abroad doesn't recognize our result like that. If she study nursing here she will still av to go for some program in abroad b4 her result can be recognized. Well, I also studied biochem in Nigeria then studied Nursing in Calgary smiley
You went to Calgary to study Nusring as an undergraduate?

In the U.S, some medical schools accept people with non-science background into medical and nursing school. Hence, you can find someone with a bachelor's in management or business going for a M.D degree.

The same medicine them dey use suffer our doctors here for 7+ years.

@op, let your friend listen to her uncle. I have a friend who studied economics from Abu zaria graduated during Abacha period , meanwhile the mother beg him to study medicine he refused, luckily for him he find his way to America, he told me later he regretted not listening to his mum advice, he later enrolled in nursing degree, today he is a big boy

Honestly, it doesn't equate. But I'll encourage you to go for the school of nursing. Difficult, but you'll pull through.

Biosciences in Nigeria are almost useless outside lecturing jobs.

Lovelydaisies:
Hello. Does school of nursing plus one year midwifery equate to the B.Sc. Nursing (It's like four and half years)? I am a graduate of one of the Biological Sciences but due to many circumstances, I am considering a school of nursing. In what way can I equate to a university nursing graduate? In what other ways are school of nursing graduates disadvantaged in Nigeria?
Thanks and sorry for the bother.

Unless your friend is passionate about science or research, I’ll advise she takes the advice of that person and go to nursing school if she plans to relocate here, although that’s still dependent on whether she has passion for healthcare. If she’s rich enough and doesn’t want to study in Nigeria, she can build up healthcare experience and apply to accelerated Masters in Nursing programs (Pre-registration) in the UK. It’s 2 years instead and she can register with NMC as a UK RN after graduation.

When you talk about maybe there being another alternative with her biochemistry degree, I did biosciences as well and a bioscience masters here. I was able to get 2 job offers, one as a lab person in the NHS and another as a research assistant. I took the research assistant post cuz it’s at the No1 Uni here in the UK (UniofCam). However I’ve found research / being confined to a lab to be boring, and tbh most people going down that route would have to spend longer years getting a PhD, else you’ll not be able to get a higher up position. However Nursing seems more interesting to me, reason why I’m starting an accelerated nursing program in 3months. Most Nigerians like me too studied Microbiology / Biochemistry / Cell Biology / Molecular Biology and the likes as a first degree because we didn’t meet the cut off for medicine or nursing or dentistry or the other medical courses. So if that’s the case for your friend, she should grab this opportunity for a career in healthcare. It’s totally worth it (IMO).

I read anatomy in one useless university angry, but my cousin is UK , I don't know weda I should join him there but the job she can find is HCA jobs , but I'm also checking I don't want to work under somebody, I don't want one day in the middle of my life somebody would just sack me, I don't know what to do?

Hello All,

A friend studied Biochemistry in one of Nigeria's Federal Universities, she has completed NYSC but she does not have a job yet.

Her brother who currently resides in the UK wants her to enrol in a school of Nursing in Nigeria and she is not happy with what her brother wants.

I asked her if her brother's reason is because Nursing is profitable in the UK and she said YES, that's his reason. The goal is that she'd eventually relocate to the the UK.

My concerns are:

1. Why study a course like Biochemistry and go back to a school of Nursing? Aren't there better alternatives?
2. Most of the people I know that attended school of Nursing always go back to the Univeristy for BSc. Nursing.
3. School of Nursing in Nigeria will take her about 3 years and I am sure she will still need to write some exams before she will be able to work as a Registered Nurse in the UK.

Are there possibilities of moving to the UK to study that version of Nigerian School of Nursing? If yes, how expensive is it?

On the other hand, if she's able to go to the UK for her masters, masters in what course can she apply for (please bear in my that she is a Biochemistry graduate) that would give her chances of securing a good job in the UK ( At least, a kind of job that would still make her earn something close to what Nurses earn)?

Please advise. Thank you
Her brother wants the best for her. A friend went to school of nursing after Bsc in Microbiology. She's now working in the UK as a nurse. Let her go to school of nursing. Studying Nursing in the UK is going to be more expensive

With B.sc in Biochemistry, she can go ahead to do her M Sc in Public health which is currently sort after in UK as much as a Nursing.

There are three viable options I will suggest for her.
1) Take the advice of the brother and go to school of Nursing, there are lots of people with first degree going back to study nursing. Three years is a short time, she may have nothing tangible in three years time running contract bank job or one sales job with target as opportunities for Biochemistry are almost non existent with lack of research facilities. School of Nursing does not go on strike unlike going to the university, and she will be done in 3years as against five for university nursing. UK places both on same scale and she can do a top bsc in one year over there if she starts working.
2) If the brother can sponsor her for a masters in UK she can go for MSc in Biomedical Sciences with placement which will give her opportunity to gain experience of the NHS laboratory system. She will then apply to IBMS UK for top up modules in order to take courses relevant to get HCPC registration as a UK Biomedical scientist ( Biochemistry option). Biomedical scientist are in demand in the UK also and start on a level higher than Nurses in the UK.
3) Gain 6-12months work experience in hospital setting in Nigeria, she can do auxiliary program or voluntary assistant work to gain clinical experience and apply for MSc Mental health or Adult Nursing in the UK Pre registration. This is for 2years and will enable her to register as Nurse in UK. Although more expensive than normal masters program and usually application is more stringent. I have a friend resuming this September in UK for same program with a bachelor in Medical Biochemistry and working experience in Primary health center.
Hi hi.
I would like to speak with you please.
Can I drop my contact nos?

Who are you, and where are you from

People all from over the world migrate, whether they've built their own country or not; it's not a Nigerian thing.

Where i live in the Middle East, there are a lot of British and European workers, who left their own developed countries to live and work here.
How about the Indians and the Chinese? You will see them practically in every country in this world.

There are many reasons for migration

You dey mind nyen nyen nyen people. So, someone who's in UK not follow dey develop Nigeria and baa?

Those people are witches abeg. If it like that, why didn't they stay in their villages since one must be physically present in a given location to develop it.

I understand where she and her brother are coming from. He wants her to use Nursing as a route to the UK. Her personal sense of self(which is different from person to person) will not let her go to Nursing school after a graduate certificate. She has a right to feel that way. I would not have agreed to do what her brother suggested even if it means starving. Sense of self is sense of self. Period!

If her brother wants to help her, he should pay £4k or £5k for her to study for an Msc in Biomedical Science here in the UK. The total fee for foreign students is about £15k. When she arrives here, she should be prepared to work while studying and pay off what is left of her fees.

With a graduate degree in Biomedical science, the world will be her oyster. Or she can study for a Masters Degree in Public Health!

I don't know who told her brother that being a Nurse in the UK is profitable. It is not, by any stretch of the imagination, unless earning £25k to £35k a year alongside long working hours is his idea of profitable.

My two pence!
