Add anything you can defend. That should be a common knowledge by now.

I learnt a skill last year and added it to my CV. I even made it look as if that was what I did as a full time job. Well, I tailored my CV and got a job two months ago.

Mystery2020:
After job hunting for a while, I saw a thread on Nairaland (some of those how to write a CV topics) where applicants with gaps in their CVs were advised to fill them up anyhow with anything they can defend. The poster authoritatively said such applicants stand no chance of getting a job.

I met some others too and was the last to be interviewed. The director decided to test me hands-on on some of the things I claimed to have done or able to do. I knew it was a setup, because they ought to have done this in previous stages. But I remained calm. I did what the director requested and I left.

this sounds like a pure lie.

by the time you are meeting the director, your competence has been established and the ogas at the top just want to have a look at you. interview with director is more of the ogas looking you over to see if you are a fit in the organization.

lying about technical competence can only work if your prospective employers do not already have their own experts.

one of the reasons i was employed back then, was because the dept needed an engineer who was good with CAD . the CAD guys we had were struggling. Less than two months after i was employed, they brought this big ass nepa scheme drawing that every other CAD person in the dept had been unable to replicate. they asked me to do it. i did it, and did it well.

imagine if i had zero experience. i would have been fked right there.

your boss will just be looking at you and wondering why a 30 minute job is taking you hours.

anyways, that is what probation is for.

Then, I continued the journey after rewritting my CV by 'filling the gaps'.

Boom! I was called for an interview at the very first place I applied to with this doctored CV. I passed the first stage with the HR. I was quizzed thoroughly during the second stage (panel interview) with the line manager & supervisor. They kept going back and forth on those things I claimed in my CV. They had doubts, but I remained calm and relaxed.

Days later, I got a call from the HR to come for stage three with one of the directors. The caller said I should relax that it is nothing serious. I became anxious. Why would the HR say something like that and why didn't they send an email like they have always done? I asked myself.

I met some others too and was the last to be interviewed. The director decided to test me hands-on on some of the things I claimed to have done or able to do. Maybe we need to brainstorm on how we can train people and help them acquire skills useful for gainful employment.
Someone mentioned “Excel”
Maybe we can make a list.
These skills are not very expensive to acquire.
For example, someone can decide to help by sponsoring someone to acquire these skills and hence improve chances of being successful.

If you are wise, instead of coming to gloat on Nairaland about your ability to pad CV, you will learn those skills which you padded on your CV, as it relates to your job function, so that you don't lose the job.
The first stage of a successful career development is to get a good job, the second stage is to be competent on the job and the third stage is to make progress on the job.
You have only passed the first stage, the second stage is more difficult. If found out that you don't have the competence you wrote in your CV, you will be fired and you will be back on square zero.

Congrats ooo

What I enjoyed is the suspense that accompanied your writing style though. I believe those things you doctored you can do are things that can be learned by reading. If it's purely hands-on or practical work like operating a machine or fixing a device, I bet small Wahala for dey

Congrats

I can attest to this op.

I could remember when I took the interview of my current job.

I made lots of research about the job but I had limited knowledge about it.

During the interview, I said so many irrelevant things grin I later discovered that most of those things I said during the interview were rubbish when I took the job, did the training and started work.

Omo, but the confidence I was using to say this rubbish was out of the world grin. I guess that's what fetch me the job.

Confidence is the key to success in interview. Very important!

So true.
I remember applying for a job last year, with this technique. I used to work somewhere in a session of the technician department.
But when I was interviewing for this job I added in my CV that I could work in another capacity.
They were impressed cos there were looking for somewhere that could be varse in various departments. I became their top choose. Lol.

I immediately called someone in my former work place, gave him the load down and told him that I would call him anytime I have I need clarification.
Naso I take nail then job.
Now I'm so good in that department I don't call anymore.

So in essence, you lied to get a job... Waow, and I see people congratulating you... My brother, the truth is that you've started that job on a faulty foundation. The Holy Bible says, "No other foundation ought any to lay, except that which is laid by Jesus Christ", which is the foundation of truth.
Repent of your sins and make restitution. God will surely pardon you. Shalom!

I like the happy ending.
Truth is only multinationals and govt employ fresh graduates, and those who have gaps on their CV.
You need to doctor it to suit the job requirements, many people do this, don't have space more than six months.
Just make sure you include skills and experience that you can defend in interview, if there's any you cannot, spend quality time on self development.

Congratulations to you. Many people exaggerate their CV.

If you go to a new country, even if you have never worked in that country, you need to put that you have some experience working in that country. If not, you don’t really stand a chance.

I’m of the opinion that you should put anything that you think will get you an interview with the HR. Anything at all. When you get to the HR, then the table is set for you to defend everything you wrote on that CV. Also, remove anything that will make anyone prejudge you. For those outside Nigeria, write the name of the school you graduate from but don’t write it is located in Nigeria. You can write the city or state but never write the country.

Infact, remove anything that will give people the impression that you are Nigerian. Use your English name instead of your native name. Immediately you have gotten a chance with the HR, then you can restore to default setting. That is my own take anyway. Job hunting is a very aggressive stage and you need to remove anything that will give people a bias impression of you to the extent that they wouldn’t call you for an interview.

Now imagine if the person graduated from University of Nigeria. Lol

Completely agree that it should be made compulsory. Excel and Microsoft word should both be made mandatory. Yes o .
Microsoft office tools are geared towards making your life very easy and you get tasks (data processing ) done very fast.

Excel and power BI are like games to me . I thoroughly enjoy using them to process data.

Knowing how to use Excel very well before graduation is a big plus. It can literally get you a good paying job. You really don't need a lot of work experience.
