Life is how you see it.

All I can say is that I forgive her because she's a kid. I don't think anyone will tell u come to America because it's all rosy, come to the US because your effort will be rewarded. If you think success will be handed to you, then you are setting yourself up

35 years of living in the US, I have never feared for my safety as much as I do now.
Some of you don't want to hear this but I feel safer whenever I'm back in Lagos than I do here.
Every American major cities have become so dangerous that you have to think about where you are going and fo what purpose.
I generally avoid any unnecessary trips outside of my house.
Coming to Naija soon and I'm looking forward to it like a child going to Disney world.
That's the American reality.

Another mass shooting just last night in TN

https://www.yahoo.com/news/six-people-shot-chattanooga-tennessee-182801897.html

There have been more than 200 of these, some don't even make the major headlines anymore.

Having said all these, the US remains may be the only country where you can come from anywhere with nothing and start earning a very decent legal income in a short time. That's what's keeping most people here.

I just shake my head cus i know shes telling nothing but the truth.

Alot of people think its all rainbows outside Nigeria, they think immediately you "Japa" you make it. This is a common stupid silly throught from people who never traveled abroad.

Yes of course there are opportunities out their but is not always. Dont be surprised you will be a victim of racial profiling and discrimination, check the rates of unemployment of African American in the us you'll be shocked. Even if you lucky to get a job, taxes, rent, bills will leave you drained. Only then you will realize working there is slavery.

Except if your parents are wealthy, influential, have good connects OR God decides its your destiny to make it outside, But for a poor or local man to "japa" , you will live abroad for 50 years, come back with nothing to show.

Its what we say in hausa "ka sake reshe ka kamo ganye" grin

She should stop talking nonsense and complaining. If she finds life there so unbearable, she should relocate back to her paradise Nigeria.

A lot of people would do everything to be in her position. It's better to suffer in a country you're not a citizen than to suffer in a country you're a bonafide citizen, which many Nigerians are currently experiencing in this shithole.

She spoke her truth but she's misguided. Firstly, her problem is not America but the failings of her parents. They failed to educate her on the challenges she would face moving to an unknown land with no support. They failed to prepare adequately by having at least one year's worth of finances to take care of housing, feeding etc. Finally, they failed to research properly as Chicago is one of the deadliest places you can live in the USA, it is not cheap, it is not safe so why move there?

The write up also makes no sense as the title alleges racism but the write up merely mentions it. She's a victim of stupidity and unfortunately the American dream does not protect one from stupidity. American dream still remains a dream, it is up to you to make it a reality. Nobody said there won't be challenges or obstacles but how you deal with them is what determines if you live the dream or you experience the nightmare!

I live in a decent neighborhood on the Southside. All other Nigerians I know live in decent neighborhood. So I don't get all the stories flying arround.

I laughed when people say Chicago is very dangerous and I see someone recommending Baltimore MD.

I'll say this, if you're here in Nigeria, you have a laptop and internet connection and can't make something out of your life then you're one lazy bum because there are just too many opportunities online where you can earn in dollars and live a very good life here. Most are lazy and will blame the system for everything. I agree the country isn't okay at all with our economy and all but that doesn't mean you can't make something of yourself because for me opportunities abound too much in this so called zoo by you people. The more the problem of a nation, the more the opportunities there in only if you can seize it but I'm sure many won't like what I've posted, they'd rather be wasting there time on the internet doing things that aren't productive. A Nigerian lady, Ajibola Elisabeth Junaid from Oyo State narrates how she migrated with her family members to the United States in search of greener pastures. Her family settled in Chicago, as they were all asylum seekers. It did not take long for her to discover that hardly does the American dream exist for minorities or people of colour.

She described America as a reality of racism, poverty, food insecurity and gun violence.

She is a senior student at Wendell Phillips Academy High School.

Her narration below:

https://nigeriastandardnewspaper.com/ng/true-life-story-american-dream-is-a-mirage-struggle-only-racism-poverty-food-insecurity-gun-violence-are-realities-ajibola-elizabeth-junaid-a-nigerian-asylum-seeker-in-chicago-narrates-experien/

That's the fault of her parents and not America. They are economic migrants disguised as asylum seekers whose aim was to beat the system.

Why the hell did she think an asylum seeker with no documentation will live like an Angelina Jolie?

99% of Nigerians that comments here on topic like this have no first hand experience whatsoever to be living where majority don't love you. If war breaks out in any western country and you of African descent that is when you know your worth and your true status. Living in the west is just like you being acting movie all your live cos in actual fact.

This is the kind of person that said Ibadan is a city because of the thousands of red roof mud house bungalows that dotted the landscape.
Even coming to lived in lagos from Ibadan is a big task that some can't withstand it but has to relocate back to Ibadan, talk more of Southern nowhere!

If your dad and mom are smart enough to research where they're going to, they won't need to be working 2pm to 1am the following just to make a living.
If they've used same amount of time to do cocoa farming or open amala joint along that lagos express after the roundabout, I'm sure life would've been better because the korepe Nissan drivers that'll come to eat there don't own guns.

Let's even talk about you a bit.
You lived in that kind place and doesn't care to hustle and visit other states, make friends etc, but telling us you're still going back there to establish as if it's your ancestral land.

My advice to you incase you're reading this, pls don't even think of coming back because the Ibadan you left is no longer the one you'll meet.
The Adedibus, Akalas, etc has changed the formula since you left.

Why would they think it's all rosy abroad? Everybody I know abroad always make it a point that it's not easy out there. On what basis are people thinking it's easy? It was not based on what the actual people on ground tell them.

Those thinking it's easy are looking at people who have weathered the initial storm abroad and are comfortable enough to come back home and invest, which is hardly the case with anyone who has barely spent 5 years abroad and with no clear path to success. There was a thread on Nairaland several years ago on this where folks moving abroad were advised to relax, pick a clear path (via education, training, vocation etc) and work diligently until they are certified/licensed. The system will always reward you. Some get to America and start chasing small money without any long term plan, get carried away then they get stuck and after more than 10 years of seeing others who are focused leave them behind they start wishing they never left Nigeria.

By the way, African American unemployment rate is currently placed between 5.9% and 6.5%. Where is the shock?
That means if you have 100 African Americans, at least 93 are employed. Be assured that the rate is way better for Nigerian immigrants.

America is one cesspit of crazy people running around with guns. You are better off going to Canada or any of the Scandinavian countries. Easiest route is to go there as a student but very expensive. After your studies, you can start your path to citizenship...

Quit that crap and only say what you know.

Cut it, I say.

Are there no gun or knife violence in Canada or the Scandinavians?

Those of bashing her should at least understand the point she's trying to make.
Most of us have that same notion of America, a place beautiful and peaceful. She's merely saying that what she saw isn't what she imagined. She's no way saying that Nigeria is better or that she intends coming back to Nigeria. She's saying that the situation of things on ground dose not reconcile with her imagination
