Lol. Boss, no be say I confuse but I feel I wasted almost a decade of my life doing the wrong thing. I was very good at what I did, in fact, other staff members wanted to be like me. I was the example.

Unfortunately, I had to resign at a point and reality dawn on me that the job did not build as much value as someone like me would want. If I invested that number of years in a Tech field, I know how much value I would have added to myself.

That's why I want to go into Tech now but I don't want to do trial and error. I want you Seniors to guide me. And once I choose a particular field, I will give it all it takes and tell myself that there is no going back.

It's natural to feel that way but your past experience always matters. IT is collaborative, you need people from every field. That's why we're having great development. Those making great innovations are not those with decades of IT experience but those who bring in their expertise from other field and contribute technologically.
I got into tech, left for business, sales, construction, oil and gas, support services, research, volunteer services, humanities/health/social science, and gravitating back to tech. I try to learn from everything I did.
You have to analyze your circumstances, create an output from the several inputs and start your journey. No two individuals walk on the same path but we all have a destination. Now is the time of tech so expect a lot of people to come in. The salaries we look down on so many people will never earn it even after 20 years experience in their fields. My mother is a senior resident doctor and my first remote job salary is more than her present salary with more than 15 years of work experience. People will naturally gravitate to what will pay the bills and we shouldnt discourage them. Also, not everyone will make it. I think we make things look easy. To get my entry level job, I studied for at least 10 hours everyday for 6 months. I work now daily for 8 hours and after that I still need to spend at least 5 hours learning new things. Leetcode alone will humble so many many people especially if they take the programming parts of tech.

The funny thing is that jobs in Finance also pay unbelievably well. Like very damned well. But people aren't rushing into Finance? Why? Because they see Finance as difficult and Tech as "easy".

Some niche field are devOps, QA Engineer you'll get a job asap. Mobile Devs is still a niche. Don't jump into web dev like React, jump into platforms built with React like Shopify, Airtable. Platforms bring money e.g WordPress Themes. Integration like the sort of Airtable, Softr and Zapier.

There's Chrome Extension, there's even Webflow gigs.

You can set yourself as a consultant and be earning money. That's the route I'm taking until bigger projects come, sometimes you might even think of a product the more you do platform gigs.

I don't think we should discourage anyone cause you don't know their circumstances. There's nothing wrong with going into a profession for the money, provided you have the appropriate mindset to succeed and the willingness to put in the hard work. If you discourage them now and they don't make it in another line of work, they'd start regretting that they didn't try to get into tech (or any other line of work they were initially interested in) because of what internet people told them. It's true that success is never guaranteed, but whether it ends in success or failure, let everyone be responsible for themselves. Especially in this country where things are so tough and no improvement in sight.

Just today, in an office where I'm doing my service, a worker there was talking to this girl and told us that some of his colleagues in university are hitting it big now cause they seriously invested in various sides of tech back then. Although I have a 2:1 in Accounting and planning to write ICAN after my service next year, I'm seriously thinking about learning this as well because of the state of our country, although definitely still going to learn Excel and QuickBooks for my course this year when I get a laptop. Me personally, I looked into a few online skills back in 2019/20 on the advice of my older brother (graphics, video editing, and programming). Programming was the only one I actually bothered downloading several videos on, but I eventually stopped because of no laptop.

I didn't even know about this apparent high pay thing for programmers back then, just until April this year. I don't know what will work out for me but I just don't want to put all my eggs in one basket in this country, lol. Whatever case, good luck to all of us.

With a background in Accounting have you thought of Remote Bookeeping roles? How about AP/AR roles? The thing is there's a plethora of opportunities in other fields. But because a lot of Nigerians only get to see the few tech folks they assume the only roles available are tech roles. A few weeks back I saw an opening for a Finance role offering $60/hr! I had to go and dig out my notes from Uni to see if I still remember NPV and FV and all that good stuff. I can even apply for an AP/AR role and start off with around about $15/hr US roles. No one is trying to prevent others from coming into tech. For me, I'm just saying there are opportunities outside of tech. That pay well relative to Nigeria.

Totally agree with you about looking at other areas apart from Dev and Web dev. Tech Support and Helpdesk are very good entry points for those with some OS kind of knowledge. Understand AD? M365? And all of the gibberish that goes on in that space? Look for Helpdesk roles in IT MSPs and start getting your hands and nose bloody while earning a buck. Depending on how good you are and how quickly you learn you can be a Junior SysAdmin in 18 months to 2 years. Get your triumvirate certifications of A+, N+ and Security+ and you are off to the races

Yes o, I've heard about some of these especially in freelancing.

Even if it's Amazon KDP or ordinary writing of articles, I'm aware that Nigerians make six/seven figures monthly from them. I'm just trying to keep an open mind to several job opportunities in different fields.

Secondly: Since money is the goal, the question shouldn't even be the highest paying. It should be the quicker to getting a paying job. Lower barrier of entry. Because if you are told the highest paying but it take 3 years to get a junior role, can you be that patient?... Exactly

Although I started as mobile dev with a 2gb RAM core2duo system, I can tell you it was hell till I got a better system as a gift.
The top 6 can be done on an average computer. So If you can't shell out 200k+ for a computer, your choice is already being made for you.

2. Getting a job: You see those last 2, I doubt there are many Nigerians that work on those full-time. Getting a local job would be hard or even not possible. Hardly will a foreign company send you their hardware to work with remotely and e fit take you years before your first gig

I am also a very good problem solver

I think outside the box a lot, I have a curious mindset and it constantly helps me to understand how things work.

I am the kind of person that does not just accept that this is how it is done, I always ask why it is done that way. If we do it this way, what will be the outcome? This mindset makes it very easy for me to understand things because I most times know why those things work that way.

When I used to work in the corporate world, I discovered something about a very reliable, widely used and trusted software. That discovery was never made by anyone before me. In fact, I don't think they have found a solution to that discovery ( it is a loophole).

TBH, my inquisitiveness, curious mindset was what led me to that discovery. I kept asking myself that what's the concept behind this technology. And in 24 hours of testing, I discovered a major loophole.

Bro you need to reorient yourself with regards to how focused you are about the monetary benefits of a career path you've not even started. One of the things that drives people to get into "tech" is money no doubt but you're probably not going to stick around to make that money if that money is your only motivation because it might relatively take a while before you start seeing that money.

Another thing is nobody can really decide for you what aspect of tech to focus . you're going to have to do your own intensive research so as to know beforehand what you're actually getting yourself into.

Whatever aspect you later pick, you can now start finding people in that domain for more in-depth suggestions about how you should go about it. That way, you make it easier for everyone involved.

Let me give you a very fast track. There's a company Called Microverse(Microverse.org). It's a company based in USA.

They train you for 7 months, then you use 3 months to look for a remote job. You pay them 15% of your income after your start making $1000. Some of their graduates make $30,000 because the stack they use is fullstack Ruby(HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Ruby and it's framework Ruby and Rails).

They have a one month pre-course, so don't worry if you're a beginner.

The training is on the concept of pair programming, so you'll work with students from all around the world.

If you register now, and get accepted let's say in August, by May next year you're at least a 500k earner.

That's the most practical advice from me, because it's structured, and you're learning with a goal to get a job.


Note: Ruby and rails is a sought after stack in US and Australia, so there's no much competition for developing countries developers.


This advice is just for Software Development.
Other fields of Tech like Product Design, Graphic design, just get a good Udemy course and stick to it for six months while connecting with a community.

All what I mentioned needs dedication. So if you're intentional, by this time next year, you'd smile.

I think it's unsettling that a lot of people are migrating into tech careers just for the pay,

You cannot take a big brush and paint everyone as driven by money. That's a fallacy of generalisation. Where was the money when I wrote my first program circa 1994? Where was the money when my first choice for JAMB was computer science whereas most other people came to CS after being rejected by their preferred courses and CS was their third choice? Where was the money when I built home networks and messed around with different software at home and I was looked at as mad and a lazy NFA? Take the so-called money from Tech today and I'm still going to remain here. A lot of us do it for the passion not for the money or fame

Some niche field are devOps, QA Engineer you'll get a job asap. Mobile Devs is still a niche. Don't jump into web dev like React, jump into platforms built with React like Shopify, Airtable. Platforms bring money e.g WordPress Themes. Integration like the sort of Airtable, Softr and Zapier.

There's Chrome Extension, there's even Webflow gigs.

You can set yourself as a consultant and be earning money. That's the route I'm taking until bigger projects come, sometimes you might even think of a product the more you do platform gigs.

I don't mean to be off topic, but what can we actually do to kill the hype around tech,
I think it's unsettling that a lot of people are migrating into tech careers just for the pay,
I mean, it would be nice to come across a Nigerian doing research and developing some cutting edge advancement in tech, who knows, maybe if we had more people like that, technological innovation could be one of those things that would make Nigerian Standout just like Music has done.

See Bros leave talk! Most persons that got into tech, got in because of the money... But along the line, what keeps you going is the passion... I ain't gonna deny that...
I started learning Web dev in February this year... I can boldly tell you that two things attracted me to tech.
1. The pay
2. The fact that you can work from home. Then, you get to live a low-key life.
But along the line, I became passionate about it.
I have rejected a job in the banking industry just to focus on this part even though I don't know or it is not sure I am gonna get a job so soon after learning and I don't have so much financial strength to carry on for so long but I have chosen that I am gonna stick to it.
I got in with the mindset of just learning front-end development but now, I virtually just want to know everything... Like I want to know how the web works fully(from Front-end to back-end) and even other fields of tech. I am just so curious to acquire knowledge and know more about the field(not just web development alone).
So, telling someone who knows nothing about tech to be driven by passion is like telling a man to fall in love with an woman he is never met or spoken to before.
Something will definitely drive you into the industry but what is gonna keep you is most likely gonna be the passion which you develop as time goes on...
So, please let's minimize this passion stuff for newbies trying to break into the field.

So, let me use this opportunity to ask... Is it possible for someone who didn't study Computer Science in his/her first degree to go for a Master's in CS? Possibly after acquiring online certificates...

Research are done at the universities. Our universities are all shitholes. I really cant blame people who come into tech cause of money cause I did. I only code for money. Food needs to be put on the table and there are bills to settle. It used to be engineering and then working in oil and gas and one could have a good life then medicine or law. Now is the time of tech so expect a lot of people to come in. The salaries we look down on so many people will never earn it even after 20 years experience in their fields. My mother is a senior resident doctor and my first remote job salary is more than her present salary with more than 15 years of work experience. People will naturally gravitate to what will pay the bills and we shouldnt discourage them. Also, not everyone will make it. I think we make things look easy. To get my entry level job, I studied for at least 10 hours everyday for 6 months. I work now daily for 8 hours and after that I still need to spend at least 5 hours learning new things. Leetcode alone will humble so many many people especially if they take the programming parts of tech.

Thank you for this post... My dad with 20+ years of experience in journalism is earning lower than my older brother, who has been a graphic designer for just a couple of years and he's not even doing remote work yet. He started with my dad's old laptop back then.

I don't think we should discourage anyone cause you don't know their circumstances. There's nothing wrong with going into a profession for the money, provided you have the appropriate mindset to succeed and the willingness to put in the hard work. If you discourage them now and they don't make it in another line of work, they'd start regretting that they didn't try to get into tech (or any other line of work they were initially interested in) because of what internet people told them. It's true that success is never guaranteed, but whether it ends in success or failure, let everyone be responsible for themselves. Especially in this country where things are so tough and no improvement in sight.

Just today, in an office where I'm doing my service, a worker there was talking to this girl and told us that some of his colleagues in university are hitting it big now cause they seriously invested in various sides of tech back then. He didn't do so because he was more invested in the conventional education pricess. Meanwhile, they haven't paid him a few months' salary as of today and he's barely getting along. He's really regretting it now. Like the head of their department actually gathered us corpers and advised us to learn in-demand online skills because there's no jobs in Nigeria today. She also revealed to us that one of her sons is in Europe today because of this remote work thing (I don't know what skill he learned though).

Although I have a 2:1 in Accounting and planning to write ICAN after my service next year, I'm seriously thinking about learning this as well because of the state of our country, although definitely still going to learn Excel and QuickBooks for my course this year when I get a laptop. Me personally, I looked into a few online skills back in 2019/20 on the advice of my older brother (graphics, video editing, and programming). Programming was the only one I actually bothered downloading several videos on, but I eventually stopped because of no laptop.

I didn't even know about this apparent high pay thing for programmers back then, just until April this year. I don't know what will work out for me but I just don't want to put all my eggs in one basket in this country, lol. Whatever case, good luck to all of us.
