The one wey dey burst my head is when people use their earnings in dollars/pounds to build houses in Nigeria, collect rents in naira and reside in developed countries. If the person plans to return to Nigeria after hustling, I can understand but spending that much on a property in VI when the returns are so poor, and demand is not high is nonsenscial to me. It even gets worse outside Lagos. Land prices in Owerri/Enugu are ridiculously so high for a city that is very unsafe and high-paying jobs aren't ubiquitous. Rather than do such as an investment, I take the money to Mexico, Portugal, Chile, Spain or even Namibia and build a hotel. At least, tourists and digital nomads visit/stay there regularly.

I think the houses in Nigeria by abroadians is majorly for comfort when they come back home, not for the sole purpose of making money. If or when you visit Nigeria, you'd require a place to stay. The rental fees they collect is just for people to occupy parts of the house, so it won't look deserted. I know some people who have houses in V.I who are living in San Francisco, so it's not about money for most people.

the bolded are wildly inaccurate and exaggerated. Most working class folks use inverters now just as most homes now use boreholes for water. I have been using an inverter right from 2014 even as a bachelor with 120k salary. Till now I have 24hr electricity as do most of my contacts/friends etc. Having an inverter setup is pretty commonplace these days.

It is actually very easy to build in Nigeria thanks to lack of regulations. Not everyone will live in Lagos, as Nigeria does not start and end there. I got mine sorted before I got married at age 30. Buy land today and with enough funds on standby even with the horrendous exchange rate you will build a 3-bed tastefully with 15m total (land cost inclusive). Buying is even easy now, 6-7m and you'll still get a 3-bed in an okay area. It always easier and cheaper to buy houses as people only sell houses out of desperation. Ppl selling lands are not usually desperate to sell. Smart people are buying property for really cheap rates at the moment. Screw Bitcoin, buy houses!

PS: I never even got to 500k monthly salary till 2020 when I resigned to face business squarely. Sales reps in good companies/multinationals like Merck, BAT wey I know dey build block of 4-6flats, most of them still under 40. Artisans, meat sellers sef get their own house. Fancy or not, it is theirs. So scratch the only the wealthy can own house thought.

None of the folks you mention here represent close to 1% of Nigeria's population. The exception is not the rule. You make N500k/month… how many Nigerians make that amount?

That is true. But you have to consider that for someone like TW who has lived abroad for a very long time, he and others like him are accustomed to a certain lifestyle and desire to be within certain facilities and amenities many places outside Lagos cannot afford. My major issue is insecurity. It is Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs at work. As for building houses/flats to rent, provided they earn in naira, that makes sense. Not using dollar earnings to invest and get naira returns, except it is long-term business investments like factories and service deliveries.

You hit the mail on the head. The issue of inverters is fairly new to me… they weren’t a thing when I left Nigeria. I can admit Nigerians can build homes, but frankly so what? I own my home, through the mortgage system. I have enough equity in it to build 2-3 mansions in Nigeria. But here’s what I can’t compromise - peace/security, excellent schools that are free for the first 16 years of my child’s life, excellent healthcare system, which means every medical issue isn’t potentially life threatening, never having to “pray” for visas just to travel to South Africa. There are way too many intangibles we tend to ignore when we reduce everything to “I can build a house outright”.

As @Treadway himself admits, he benefits from a Nigeria having little to no regulations… that is a non-starter for me. I like an ordered society where I don’t have to drive past mounds of rotting garbage daily on my way back to my mansion sealed off with 15 foot barbed wire fences.

Amazon just opened a new office in Lagos Nigeria .why ? Since japa people say Nigeria is about to collapse or may likely collapse so why will this company see prospects in Nigeria while Nigeria are resigning to Japa to work in Amazon as warehouse worker .while Amazon is setting up in Nigeria .
You that you are in Nigeria, why haven’t you opened a business that is similar to Amazon and make that money that is plentiful in Nigeria

To be honest, I cannot blame them, especially if one looks at the future of Nigeria. Some people prefer peace of mind and security, others prefer the fast lane. Like someone mentioned, the thought of driving through the night is something I cherish and owning that the chances of anything happening is very low. Nigeria is too unpredictable for me, so for those who say "you can make money here", that is one aspect of investing in the country. Before I left, I wanted to invest in having a cassava factory that would process large quantities of cassava and even begin an out-grower scheme within the locality. Only for me to read in the papers that Fulani herdsmen cut off the hands of the farm manager of a nearby cassava plantation. An aide to the governor owns the farm, and till date, the culprits have not been caught. You want to arrest senior citizens? Someone will mention Indians, Lebanese and Chinese, but don’t forget that most come with huge capital, the Nigerian government loves foreigners more than some Nigerians and these people have deep networks built over the years. This is something Nigerians who relocated a long time (esp those in the UK) should have built especially regarding entrepreneurship. But being the divided people who we are, they could not do so.

Lebanese don't come to Nigeria to hustle for jobs through study routes. They come either as expatriates or entrepreneurs with business ideas. Nigerians don't go to Canada or the UK for either (typically). I don't think division is the issue.

you responded without reading, clearly. First of, I noticed you changed the 0.0001% to 1%, so you are thankfully backtracking closer to reality. Now, even 1% is about 2million people, meaning a little above 50000 ppl per state. You saying about 50000ppl per state don't use inverter shows how WILDY out of touch this point is. Again, inverter setup in most homes is pretty commonplace these days. Stop the habit of throwing percentages or stats without having a full or partial grasp of what you are saying. I would say at the very least 15% of people use inverters as at now. It doesn't have to be a mega setup, with one chinco Suoer inverter of less than 20k, charger of
about 15-20k and a good 200-220ah battery of about 120-150k, you are good to go, even now wey naira don cast...it beats fuelling gen daily. I only put my gen on once or twice a year when long power cuts of like a week long or more happen, which is very very rare.

Also, I typed clearly that I didn't even get to 500k/month before I resigned to face business. Just to let you know that most of my shit was sorted even without earning very big money. While I agree, I find it extremely odd that till date, Nigerians are not a major entrepreneurial bloc in the UK. There are Indian and Pakistanis born and bred in the UK who are multi-millionaires and even billionaires but not a single Nigerian. Indians before colonisation was a very rich country. Uk met them extremely rich and plundered them to oblivion. They just bounced back and is taking over their initial spots in world politics. Pakistan and India were one before.

We wil talk about different nations in Nigeria before colonisation after the election and where they were with civilisation. Nigerians going to uk or abroad still have the average Nigerian mentality we display at hone which is show off.

Kenyans are taking over the sport after India in uk.
Indians are united, will circulate info that will benefit them but see a Nigerian showing what to do to excell, its very impossible. You rather hear from Indians or other African countries. Indians start grooming their children as soon as they are born. We are busy with owambe, feminism and back biting. How can you groom your kids when more than half of the Nigerian population are divorced because they want to be fake oyibos? Custody battle and busy trying to get the kids to hate the other parent. Others have moved on.

…and exactly how accurate is the 15% number you just threw out? Is there data on which you based your estimate… or like me are you making a guesstimate? Very easy to criticize…

Your point is all over the map. In which other country do you pay taxes and yet have to pay for and generate your own electricity, build your own boreholes, provide your own private security and pray you never get seriously sick? You provide lots of personal anecdotes that don’t apply to the vast majority of Nigerians.

I asked before, what percentage of Nigerians earn up to N500k/month? Easy to “sort your shit out” if you won the birth lottery…

Save the idiotic condescension. All you are living breathing proof of is that a tiny minority of Nigerians will win the birth lottery. End of.

I notice you’ve steadfastly refused to address key points I raised… let me state again:

1. What percentage of Nigerians earn N500k/month?
2. Why should I pay income taxes every year yet have to provide my own borehole, electricity, security and enough savings to travel to India for basic life saving treatment?
3. Are you certain of adequate medical care should you need it? Or there are inverters for life saving surgeries now?

The point isn’t to laud living abroad, it’s to point out the utterly and laughably deluded idea that just because you won the birth lottery, anyone “with a little financial literacy, can live well and fine” in Nigeria. Good luck with your inverter… no one uses that in serious countries.

Just more word salad… a cursory read of your posts and it’s clear this is your MO with other folks like justwise and Ednut.

I make what you make a year in a few weeks… my 2 best friends from college in naija are in high ranking jobs at chevron and BASF US. See, I can use 3 of us as “living proof” that a life in America is far superior to the life you live in the hellhole called Nigeria.

Your reluctance to answer my questions speak volumes. You won the birth lottery and think you can lecture everyone… good luck when you get any health issue beyond malaria. If you had the brain you delude yourself into thinking you have, go back and ask why you pay income tax and yet have to provide your own basic utilities. You own an inverter/generator, you build your borehole, fire service is basically nonexistent, no healthcare… and the dunce thinks an inverter is all there is to life? grin grin take a seat young man.

Weren’t you the first to waffle on about your “financial literacy”, N500k per month salary and how much your inverter system costs? grin grin Now you have a problem? Not everyone is in awe of your “financial literacy”. You are poor by foreign standards dude.

I initially refrained from saying anything about finances. It was simply hilarious to me that you thought what you earned was a reasonable salary. I earned more than N500k per month as a poor graduate student… and I didn’t need an inverter to guarantee 5 straight years of uninterrupted electricity supply. I paid my taxes and the government did it’s job. You’re a joke.

Everything you said here is so wrong.

Once your buy a house, the mortgage rate is usually fixed for 30 years. Except you intentionally did adjustable rate, but most people don’t.
Also you got the maths wrong. The recent increase in interest rate was for three quarter of a percentage point, that 0.75%
Therefore , 0.75% of £1500 is not £1900.
It is just £11.25 increase .
Which is £1511.25

Don’t make it sound like you were talking about new loan. The point you made was that an existing mortgage amount would increase from 1500 to 1900 due to the recent increase. And I am telling you that, existing mortgage does not change with interest rate. It would only affect those taking new mortgage or refinancing.

How is Nigeria nearing it's ruin to be honest? Gun violence and kidnapping happen in USA everyday. But you won't talk about that due to White worshipping..but you people wish bad things happen to Nigeria and her people everyday so you'll be able to justify your Japa and tell them "we warned you". Why can't you people Just accept the fact that not everyone want to come And live a lonely and boring life abroad Just because of 24hrs light which you pay for with your nose anyways , and McDonald Job of $1500 per month. The money you earn over there doesn't even find you that boost until you convert it to naira in your head just to validate yourself and say ",I'm earning more than a professor in Nigeria". This is a trend I see Among you people.

And you can call me broke because I live in Nigeria. Since you can't even know whether I'm more satisfied and contented with my life or not

Thanks

It is amusing how many of you only know those who works with McDonalds.
