Of course, it was going to affect Benin and some other neighboring countries. The only issue is how do we ascertain the proceeds from the subsidy removal will be used for the promised purpose cos I dont trust this new government.
This was the economic woe that befell Venezuela before their current recovery.

Benin Republic is just 13 milion people. And besides that Thier is very minimum fuel amount that get to that country. Same also Nigeria import cheaper things from that country. It's not the reason we are paying trillions but corruption.

Yeah, because the profit margin from smuggling fuel...I could earn enough if I was a smuggler, pay off the customs and excise people and still come home with a ton of money.

Plus, here is a cold truth,...customs men and women cannot be everywhere. Unless we built the equivalent of the Berlin Wall around our country and manned it with over 3 million soldiers, we won't stop this nonsense.

At least that loophole is closed for now.

The same thing happens in Venezuela. Fuel is less than N10, meanwhile in its neighbours it is above N500. Result...Venezuela loses 18 BILLION dollars annually to smuggling.

It's like osmosis...area of high concentration and all that.
How can fuel be less than N10? Are they mad in that country or what?
Custom guys are some of the richest civil servants, the amount of profit they rake in from bribes and impounded products is mind-blowing

When it comes to intellectual discourse you can never find obedients there because they are too beclouded by prejudice and bigotry to see the truth or think right, imagine saying this is propaganda, if Peter Obi had won and he removed the subsidy on his first day in office I'm sure they will cheer him on and argue vehemently about how right he is, they don't mind throwing Nigeria under the bus just to malign Tinubu, but we know their tactics.

Removal of subsidy is one of the best things to do.
My problem is, will the government invest the N7.2 trillion yearly budget into Education, Health or Infrastructure?
They will still loot it.

I believe subsidy is around N5.5 trillion.

In addition to the spending areas you highlighted, remember too that government will have to use some of the saved subsidy money to pay down the huge loans past governments have borrowed.

Removing subsidy should strengthen the country's fiscal position, but the money saved will still not be enough to suddenly transform Nigeria. But it should help to.improve things a little.

Oga, this is not propaganda.

It has been going on for years. That is how we keep losing money

And the same thing happens in Venezuela.....

Look, I know Tinubu and company are not the best we can do for this country...but this part is not propaganda. There are articles and papers and diagrams online that detail the extent of the smuggling problem.

Or have you forgotten the brave Customs officer who exposed what was going on?

Removal of subsidy has ended the cheating that some marketers were doing. Make them work hard for their money.
You guys sometimes sound like you reason from your anus. So, because some unscrupulous people have been smuggling subsidized fuel from Nigeria to Benin Reprublic, the whole citizen should bear the brunt? What happens to setting up a task force to curb this menace? What happens to effective border policing? There's a reason why illiteracy is worse than cancer. There's no single economic benefit of this subsidy removal. Please don't say that the money will be diverted to other sectors because you and I know if won't. Rather, it will be looted in broad day light.

Secondly, the law of equity says that; 'He who must come to the table must come with clean hands'. If the government is truly sincere about the development of this nation, why can't they reduce the running cost of governance? Or is their bogus pay not affecting our recurring expenditure? See, they ain't bearing any brunt but they are telling the citizens (who are already going through a lot) to sacrifice for the greater good. If you cannot see the insincerity of our government, then you need to have your head examined.

Citizens of Benin Republic are right now taking to the streets of Twitter to bemoan the removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria. With some hoping for the removal of President Tinubu.

This is what some Nigerians and even the NLC should understand, Nigeria is subsiding the fuel for our surrounding countries.

Benin republic will not be happy with the removal of subsidy

Fuel in Benin is N489 right now.

And right now, fuel in Nigeria is N488-540 per liter.

At the end of the day, smugglers cannot make a profit at all. Removing subsidy has made it difficult for anyone to smuggle fuel across the border.

And people ask me why I say subsidy must go...well here is one good reason. grin

Modified

If fuel was still N195, and I was living on the border, I can buy fuel into two 50l jerrycans, at N19500, cross the broder and sell it at dobule the price, and earn a cool N40000. Note that it was not only big cabals involved in the smuggling...it was also small poor boys and gals too.
Silly comparison
Rice, textiles cars and some other commodities are also cheaper in Benin Republic than Nigeria
I've not heard of their govt thinking of jacking up prices of such stuffs so that they stop being smuggled.
Besides, it's obvious this is cheap propaganda from the stable of agbadorians

This is no propaganda at all. This act has been on for donkey years, Cameroon, Niger, Benin, even all the way to Togo and Mauritania. Petroleum smuggling has been on for years and it is among the things crippling our economy

You can't compare petroleum to those products you listed above.

And the smuggling in of those commodities are one of the things damaging our economy as well. Instead of them to use Nigeria's port or manufacture in nigeria, they go to neighbouring countries and produce over there or import from there to smuggle into Nigeria.
Our west African neighbours are parasites eating on our economy.

The smuggling of petrol has come to an end. No going back. We hope Tinubu deal with them with the smuggling of commodity products as well

The decision was never thoughtless. Humans always solve challenges when faced with them and not in advance .Now they removal have occurred, We all will gladly solve the challenges it will bring. No Constant power, local production of Electric tricycles and other things.
