This is a big lie a 1 litre of fuel in filling station cannot run for 1hr 40min + on 2.5kva generator the one you measured is total gallon which is way higher than filling station 1 litre. The 1 litre of Mobil or total or lubcon gallon is approx 1.5 litres of filling station so no dey cap.

Do ya own experiment post nah.....

The risk of that is minimal when used in a highly ventilated environment.

Generators should be kept outside anyway, so there is enough Nitrogen in the air to dilute any leakage.

It's far safer than petrol.

Nice analysis by op

Considering the new proximity of diesel price to that of LPG and petrol, please someone else should help us analyse as well the consumption rate of diesel for power generation in relation to LPG.. At least I know as a fact that diesel burns far slower than petrol.

Because way I am looking at it, diesel might be more cost effective for power generation than LPG or petrol presently..and far safer than these LPG to petrol generator wahala...

. I am sorry sir you are misguided

Th e entire purpose of the exercise is to influence a financial decision
So the basis of comparison should be how much gas does it take to run the generator at full capacity for a unit time for example 24 hours
Versus
How much petrol to achieve the same objective. And A comparison in cost

So comparison is neither mass nor volume but. Comparison of financial cost of running with either gas or petrol.

A Kg to kg comparison is useful for caloric studies in a physics study. Density does not come into it and is irrelevant

This is purely an economic or business study to determine which is the cheaper fuel

A good analogy is a diesel engine vehicle versus petrol

The motorist is concerned with kilometres per naira

It is important to learn how to formulate problems in other people's terms and address what is important to them

In response to the removal of PMS subsidy.

I have installed an LPG/CNG carburettor that also works with PMS (petrol)

Kindly note

Fuel tank emptied via the supply hose .

Scale set to measure lpg as it is consumed in KG

1L of fuel measured out into a gallon and will be poured into gen.

Same amount of load will be applied in both instances .

Timer set to zero.

I will start with LPG.... Will run for 1KG and I will turn it off once it hits 1kg on the scale the
mark the time.

Next will be petrol PMS, it will also run for 1L then I will mark the amount of time it took before gen went off.

1kg of gas = ₦650 (June 12 2023)

1L of petrol = ₦500 (June 12 2023)

Let's start.

Any questions feel free to ask.

Modified summary

Total time of LPG - 197mins at #650/kg

= #3.3/min

Total time or petrol - 106 mins at #500/l

= #4.7/m

Another way of looking at it .

With Gas

By calculation

1kg of gas at 650naira per kg lasted 3.17hours (3hours 17mins)

How many kg of gas per hour
650/3.17= 205.

Cost per hour = ₦205

I.e ₦205 of gas lasted one hour

*With Petrol*

One liter at #500 lasted 1.46mins (one hour 46mins)

Cost per hour= 500/1.46 = ₦342

Conclusion LPG cheaper

Personally gas is so safer than pms any day, but I'll have to put out this warning.

WARNING!!!!

LPG IS FLAMMABLE.

THE GAS LINE AND GAS CYLINDER SHOULD BE KEPT AWAY FROM NAKED FLAMES AND HOT SURFACES.

WHEN TROUBLESHOOTING A PROBLEM WITH YOUR GEN USE PMS ESPECIALLY FOR VALVE AND ELECTRICAL ISSUES.

FINALLY THE END PRODUCT IS STILL CARBON MONOXIDE AND GEN SHOULD NEVER BE USED IN A CONFINEMENT, CARBON MONOXIDE WILL KILL IF THIS HAPPENS.

Happy independence day people .

We can also use Biogas, which is not inflammable

LNG will be more expensive as it is more compressed, so more work done and higher price.

I have a feeling that the cost of running CNG will almost be the same as current petrol price.

That deceptive APC government is simply using CNG propanganda to divert attention on the proper use of the replaced subsidy money
CNG is an abbreviation of “Compressed Natural Gas” whereas LPG is an abbreviation of “Liquefied Petroleum Gas”. The primary difference between CNG and LPG lies in the components that make up these fuels. While CNG is primarily made up of Methane, LPG is primarily made up of propane.use your brain, everything doesn't have to be propaganda

Results for PMS petrol .

1L of petrol ran for 1hr and 46mins

Cost ₦500

Nice experiment. I like practical people. Nevertheless, I think u should have converted the 1kg of gas to litres using it's density so that both gas and PMS would be litres.

As in this case, 1kg of gas is not equal to 1litre of PMS.

Sorry to ask, is the price of LPG same as CNG? Because I was told at NIPCO gas that CNG is 110 Naira per KG.

Kindly confirm please
Price are not the same and CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) is different from LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas).
LPG, which is either propane or butane (or mixture of both) is also known as Cooking Gas or Domestic Gas.

The cylinder size is 28kg when full. It can contain 12.5kg of propane (LPG) or equivalent fluid content of 26.5 litres.

A 6.5kVA generator contains 25 litres of fuel and it can only run for a maximum of 12 hours. I stand to be corrected. The OP must have done the test on a 2KVA generator.

I intend to do this test as well. I will run a full 12.5kg cylinder of gas and see how many hours it will last, then run the same gen on a full tank, watch the consumption and the cost, then find out how many litres of PMS it will take to match the number of hours it will take to exhaust a full LPG cylinder.

If you use a Non-Explosive Composite Fibre Cylinder, you won't have to worry about explosion with LPG, LNG, CNG or any other type of gas.

I'm just waiting for the results to come in, so I can decide on what to do next with my generator.

In terms of pricing, it is possible that petrol prices will fall a little with less demand if many Nigerians switch to gas to fuel their cars and generators, but what will happen to the price of gas with the high demand? You expect price of gas to remain below N700 per kg?

Thank you for your last sentence. Nigerians will use all sorts of skills and stupidity to shy away from revolution.
Switching to gas is NOT the escape people think it could be.

The risk of explosions of a gas cylinder only occur in an enclosed space.

In the open air, this risk is heavily minimized.

Nigerian gas is heavily underutilized. We are still flaring 66% of natural gas.

In Jan to November 2022, Nigeria flared 216.5 billion standard cubic feet of gas .

All this wastage since 1956 will now find usage.

This is actually LPG, CNG is cheaper and the rate will still be same.

As at today, CNG is sold around 130 to 15o per kg but my question is does the carburetor serve both LPG and CNG ? because I know they cannot be mix and I also know the engine can work with either of LPG and CNG but the kits( carburator) cannot fit for duo . Like u need to get a CNG carburetor if you're using an LPG own.
