I've been to 15 states in Nigeria my whole life, and one thing I always notice is, Untarred roads, Lack of drainage system, Lack of proper planning e.t.c

Which always make me curious, Why does everywhere in Nigeria look like it got hit by a nuclear bomb? Why? Why don't we have modern streets and cities!!

Since the inception of Nigeria, I Don't think we have built any city, And please don't even mention Banana island, It's a piece of crap!!

It's sad that only about 3% of Nigeria is actually developed and the other 97% is just straight up piece of trash!!
You guys can't discuss Nigeria without insult and curses? Criticism should be constructive. Discussions should highlights the problem and present a solution. Now back to the to topic, the major cause of the problem is the local government which are not closer to the grassroot, they are not functional. Most of the so call local government chairs don't even know why they are there, no town planning no single activity, even streetlights done by state governors, other bodies in some local government are left to rot. I think the local government also need more funding we should also hold the local government chairs more accountable because they are largely been ignored by us.

1.We don't pay enough in taxes as a NATION (I'm not talking about your personal income tax...).

You can now call me a liar, but our tax rate is 24%, and about 70% of the population does not pay taxes to state and federal coffers. Largely because informal sectors.

Also, our government revenue is 80% dependent from oil revenue. If we were more serious about tax, we would not be that reliant on oil

2.The Oil Money is not Enough

Nigeria produces 1.6m barrles of oil a day. That's enough for Libya, a country of 8 million, to look nice. Enough for Qatar, a country of 1.1 million, to look nice and host the world cup even. Nigeria...220 million people. The stealing, corruption and looting makes our own matter worse.

And that 1.6 million provides 80% of government income.

Is that enough?

Oga, BEFORE you call me a government apologist, I AM NOT EXCUSING THE GOVERNMENT.

I AM NOT EXCUSING THE GOVERNMENT

The hard simple fact is that government has failed because WE DO NOT RUN A DIVERSIFED ECONOMY...and WE do not collect enough in tax.

Again, because we do not collect enough in tax, gobernment officals can loot because it is not 'our' money they are spending after all...it is oil income. LOL.

aLL BOILS DOWN to one conclusion, we must choose a leadership or make our leadership make us a nation that is reliant on exporting manufactured goods and services.

Good afternoon.

Thank you for this. One thing is evident though, even if 70% of Nigerians paid taxes, we have not had the type of leadership that can create anything meaningful with the revenue. What you will just see is more Keke Napep and grinding machine programmes. Then occasionally one road, one flyover, and maybe one airport. 🤷🏼‍♂️

So all the billions being looted can't be used infrastructural development ? Yet you recommend the pilferers should be given more? Plus out of the little an ordinary Nigerian manages to get from work (With the current spending power of the naira, that sum won't take care of a family of 5, without them tightening their belt? Not to mention the very low population of Nigerians receiving that much as salary.

We've already seen how they use the funds they can lay their fingers on. No need to give them more.

I just paid my licensing fees for the year, and e don add an additional 1500naira...grin

Let's start with me addressing the implication you make, that I am excusing looting. I am not, and I appreciate it if you read what I wrote, and understand.

Second, the problem with looted funds is that they take time to get back, and the law has to find all of them, which is why it is taking so long to find all of it.

Third...and now onto my point, let's get the looted money back....and then use it for development...what next? What happens when the money finishes?

That is why governments have to have a continous source of income.

And it has to be taxes and taxation. That's how Europe runs.

And like I have said here, we have to become an exporter of manufactured goods and servicies

Again, we have to become an exporter of manufacutred goods and services

Again we have to become a manufacutrer of services and export goods (ok, brain malfunction there..lol).

Not only do we earn money, but government won't be corrupt, because if they are, it harms our bottom line.

But, as I have said here earlier....even if we get back all the money looted from Nigeria...it amounts to 582 billion dollars. Assuming the money is sitting somewhere, all it would do is make things a bit better.

If we want to be rolling with the big boys, we have to be having an economy of 5 trillion or more dollars. And that can only be achieved by fighting corruption, raising taxes from all...so that people are forced to take an interest in how government money is spent...and in becoming an economy that is dependent on (all together now) the export of manufactured goods and servicies.

Every street is a market and the wares must be displayed for the legs to touch them.

Every house has at least one shop. That way the competition must be at peak.

Every open space is a motor park, or mechanical workshop. That way you don't have to pay for shop or shed. But some "task force" finds it an opportunity to put bread on their table.

All because of greed and unhealthy competition. The politicians don't care because they are preoccupied with the next election.

I love dis ur reasoning.
But wait o, so no one can build a personal house in U.S?
yemmit90:
For Nigeria to have beautiful and organised cities, the right to build structures or buy land must be remove from individuals. Real Estate or construction companies should be the only organisations mandated by law to do so. Flexible Mortgage system must be introduce by banks, government and other financial houses. We are just wasting spaces in the name of building individuals houses, a single condo can accommodate a whole street in some localities. Would it not make sense if 50 people buy a flat each in a building than making useless structures on 50 plots of land or more. No individual or family should be allow to own more than 3 bedroom apartment or duplex if you are rich enough.

By this development, it will be very easy for investors to invest in a massive modern buildings and condos. This will also curb corruption to a greater extent as most of the loots are being spent on properties.

Well, we could enforce extant laws on street trading, and zoning of housing and businesses, but the problem is, anytime a governor or LG chair tries to do so, he or she is labelled as evil, and demonic, and is accused of making the poor suffer.

El Rufai tried to do that in Abuja when he was FCT minister, and of course he was labelled Shaytan .

I once tried to fix my street all by myself. I planted some beautiful trees, water them daily, and cleaned up every nook and cranny, but after one month, the Fulanies brought their cows and ate up all the trees I suffered to plant and nurture. They left behind, cow dungs all over the street. cry

They were driving on I-75 Highway in North Dallas when the woman sighed and said, "na wa oh, everybody just dey drive New cars here..." the driver replied: "you can buy any car of your choice by credit facility.."

The woman exclaimed and said: " how then do you distinguish the rich from the poor?" The man replied: "you can't know by their cars because anyone with a job can buy anything on credit and pay monthly to maintain a good quality of life."

The woman said - to her shame - "I can't live in this country where everybody is equal."

The story above depicts the mental frame of many black people who grow up in Africa.

God and angels have very little regard, if any, for the black race in Africa.

Exactly that is how Nigerians are ...terrible sadist , they dont want you to have what they can afford...Black hearted .....if any person who have this terrible mindset becomes a leader they will impoverish the citizens that is what is going on in Nigeria today

The truth is that everyone doesn't have the same mental capacity; I found out in the university. In school, some of us read to learn.

However, I was shocked when I met a course mate who could cram the text of an entire page of a textbook and reproduce it without looking at the page word for word. I am not kidding. God knows that I cannot do that. He graduated with 4.23. He nearly made a first class.

Meeting that guy exposed me to the fact that there are things one can never be, no matter how much one tries. Humans are not the same. Humans don't have the same mental capacity. Genetic makeups differentiate races. For Black Africans to come close to Caucasians in mental capacity, we have to invest massively in education.

Botswana is less than 3 million people, and is what Nigeria would be if our population was 5 million instead of the 230 million people.

Botswana's main export is diamonds. It is the seventh largest exporter of diamods, and it has just 2.9 million people. That's why it can afford good looking roads and streets.

Nigeria? We can't because our populaiton is too huge to rely on one single export, and that is if we used the money rightly. Countries like Nigeria that have a large population size and are prosperous also rely heavily on exporting manufactured goods and services, and taxable income. A multiplicity of money streams if you will.

If Botswana were to grow to 200 million people, and still rely on diamonds...it would be as bad as Nigeria.

Alora, Gabon is a 2.4million populated country and remains a gross underdeveloped nation due to crass corruption and greed. As someone mentioned, black Africans are somewhat genetically cursed from the inception of mankind

You must understand that we are a very poor country. Infact, we are very wretchedly poor.

We seems to have this notion that we are a rich country because of the oil and other mineral resources below our feet, but all that has no value if what is in our head is emptiness, corruption, injustices et al.

On Gabon,Gabon has been described as an 'oil rich country' yet they export around 233,000 barrels of crude per day.

A lot but not as much as Qatar does (Qatar exports nearly ten times that).
