Good day guys, I'm new here...

I'm but a humble student who's interested in learning all i can about proper investment as i will soon be graduating from the university.

Nairaland had played a big role in my life in terms of guidance and advice from well experienced superiors, i wouldn't be where i am today if not for some wise advise from fellow nairalanders, currently in school and doing well (at least better than most of my mates ), trying to set a good foundation for my future after school.

i'm 25 and i am interested on starting a journey on investing and would really appreciate any advice that will help me succeed in this path.

Thanks in advance.

This shouldn't take up to a week or more than a month depends on how much of a voracious reader you are (I will not suggest what i didn't do myself). This gives you better picture of how the past played out (political and economic scenario of Nigeria since 2012 till date). As at H1 2023, UBA's African operations had contributed close to 50% of the group's earnings. The Naira has depreciated further since then, implying the percentage contribution from its African operations should have improved.

UBA, Ecobank(other factors to be considered), Access(riskier expansion drive should be factored in), GTBank, Zenith, etc, who had a substantial percentage of their operations outside Nigeria before 29th May, 2023 should be given a closer look, in terms of the improved topline and bottomline these operations will translate to, as Group results are reported in naira. And this has nothing to do with forex revaluation gains/losses which are one-off.

Caveat: The converse will be the case should Naira strengthen, as expected.

@synticate, don't rush. The race you are about to start is a marathon, not a sprint. It takes time. Don't worry, this market will always be there and opportunities will always abound. First, define your reason for wanting to invest ie your investment objective. Most times your objective will direct your interest and the knowledge to seek.

When it comes to investment there are principles to follow which are normally universal but the applications of these principles are influenced by individual investor's interests, risk tolerance, age, amount of funds available for investment, the purpose of investment, environment etc.
Don't try to get everything at once and don't be scared when you read or hear those investment jargon in no time you will get to understand.

One thing with this market is that you get to understand it more when you go practical with a profesional guidiance most times. As you are reading try as much as possible to practice. Learning never ends it's a lifelong activity.

Also, note that capital market investment will require you to control these two emotions - Fear and greed and if you wish to do well have a long-term approach with fundamental sound stocks at the start and you can graduate to trading or short-term later.

While reading previous pages of this thread, don't abandon the current pages, be interested in economic news and visit other financial websites that can help you understand investment generally.

At Investment One Financial Services we can take you by the hands and walk you through the investment corridor and in no distant time you will find your feet. Reach out to me my contacts are displayed on my signature.

Note that the fx revaluation gains are largely unrealized.
How is it unrealized? Some of the banks have already included it in their EPS. That is what probably makes UBA to have EPS of about N12.93 in Q3. I stand to be corrected on this assertion though.

Unrealised because whatever instrument they invested in and the value has now gone up purely due to the exchange rate has not been sold and therefore Unrealised.

On the face value, UBA's Q3 2023 'Net trading and foreign exchange income' of N450b is more than its PAT of N449b. Don't expect too much for YE 2023, especially with the CBN reiterating that dividends can't be paid from forex revaluation gains.

With CBN's insistence that banks should not pay dividend from their forex gains, expect a significant pull back on the banks. Interesting times!
Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by BuchyD: 7:57am On Mar 17
Pullback...yes Significant pull back?...maybe
Even If it happens,FUGAZ will bounce back soon enough.
Re: Nigerian Stock Exchange Market Pick Alerts by Frangel: 8:06am On Mar 17
I think the fear of banks not paying very good dividends because of the CBN policy on fx gains might not give the full picture.

Most of the big banks already have huge revenue reserves/Retained Earnings balances from which higher-than-previous dividends can be paid. However, most banks don't pay so much due to need to conserve cash due to nature of business, for growth, loan/debt convenants, regulatory requirements, etc. Retained earnings are available, by law, for distribution as dividends.

A major reason, I think, banks would not pay huge dividends would be the ease to meet a possible recapitalization policy, especially from Tier1 cap. Otherwise, they can pay huge dividends from the retained earnings balance and not run foul of the policy on fx gains. I don't see them pay less than what they paid last year sha; it sends some wrong vibes.

But this has always been CBN's instruction since last year. In my own opinion, these things have already been factored in.
Me also think that this year is not all about dividends. If not how can you explain all the interest in MTN, transcorp, nascon, dang sugar and many more that are not paying dividends or anything significant in that regards.
Dividends are good but capital appreciation appears to be the focus at this time.

The people in banks are not expecting more than 50 kobo to 1 naira increament to thr last dividend paid .The price rise In banks is based on devaluation/inflation in the country.
And if it is based on dividend oando has no business above #5 . When did oando pay the last div.what is the div of geregu and transcorp plc.why did mtn recover after bad result. Nigeria equities are under valued because of devaluation of naira. How many naija equities worth up to a dollar when you check its asset value

Do you have an Investment account with United Capital Asset management?

Which of the investment account products did you invest in?

Who is your account officer? What is the purpose of the loan?

Interest rate for new loans is now reviewed to 25%.

Existing loans will continue with the old rates until when the customer rollovers the loan for another 6 months

The news was out since Early Friday, if not Since Thursday last week self...
It didn't affect the banks on Friday because I was watching out for this........rather, the banks appreciated the more.
Thinks there's more to bank's rally than dividends.

A whole 16 soldiers were allegedly murdered without the assailants suffering any losses. This is the greatest embarrassment faced by the Nigerian army. Is this part of the deteriorating affairs of this country? Then there are the alleged unprecedented levels of budget padding.

I strongly feel that something drastic is coming, and I hope that when that happens, our investments in the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NGX) will be spared. undecided
