You are right. This is a must in all Northern marriages. During my marriage, my wife came with a set of executive Chairs, a 50 inches smart tv, two deep freezers, a massive family bed with it's mattress, makeup mirror,2 sets of AC, wordrope and all Kitchen utensils including a cooker.
All northern marriages? Even shoe makers family?

Buying expensive gifts for tje bride are done by rich families in all tribes.

I am surprised this is new to some Igbos.

It is called IDU UNO.

Basically the bride's people giving their daughter the basics to start a home. The minimum is kitchen utensils and newborn things. Then if they have the means, they can add more and you see things like this.

In a situation where the man has everything, she would take it to his village house and lock in their assigned room there.

Whether the groom's ego likes it or not, the bride MUST receive these gifts. It is a standard where I come from. My compound youth even contribute to support the bride's family and most times we give more than whatever the man brought as marriage list. It should be adopted by all.

In a display of tradition and community spirit, a man from Umuezukwu community in Onicha Igboeze, Ebonyi State, has shared a video showcasing the array of gifts given to a bride on her traditional wedding day. This customary practice reflects the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo people, where a bride is showered with blessings and essentials as she embarks on her new journey as a married woman.

This is normal in Northern marriages. It's not new to me.

And when there’s a divorce the bride packs all that she brought to the house.

Most of the things my wife brought are still in their cartons. They are kept in the Store in my house. Cause I have almost everything in my house before I married her. But the executive Chairs she brought is the one we are using in the living room now. And we are also using almost all the Kitchen stuffs she brought

That's why when you enter North, you will see Furniture makers, make sets of beds, executive Chairs, center table, wardrobe, make-up mirrors etc. They make them in sets. They don't sell one except the entire sets.

They actually make them for sale to brides families. Thats why funiture makers in the North make money. People patronise them regularly for this purpose.

While common People patronise Nigerian made furnitures, the rich go for imported furnitures.

Yes they do in all Northern marriages. Did you noticed that, during those mass marriages that are conducted in Kano. Do you notice that the Government provided sets of Couch, bed, wardrobe, make-up mirrors plus kitchen stuffs.

The government provided those stuffs to each bride, since the Government was responsible for the marriages

Note: Both Northern Christians and Northern Muslims do this. It's a Northern tradition.

This one never know what await him in the hands of that girl.

There is no amount of gift the girl's family will give you that will equates, the amount of deceit, pain and death she is preparing for you.

Kindly, collect the gifts and throw that useless ashawo back to the family. Who needs a Borden in this modern life!

The only thing you should do, is use and dump her. Not shining teeth because of gifts.

Who did this to you?!

The best part is peace in the home.

Hopefully families can have unity and love with such cultures. It should not be one sided, with the man bearing the whole responsibility.
Cheers bro.

It's common with the Northerners. The girls family may be wealthy but personally, i don't like it.

Always best to avoid your inlaws feeding you people or providing things for you people. That's the fastest way to lose your respect and status as the head of the home.

Marrying into a rich home in Nigeria as a man is not as romantic as most people think it is.

You are wrong. What you wrote is far from the reason. It is actually a tradition in the North. Common people do it for their daughters who is getting married too. Even the bride price, most families give it to the bride to do whatever she wants with it.

All these from your family purse or your husband contributed?

My Wife's father bought almost everything. The mom bought all cooking utensils. That's what tradition demands for them.

The idea is this. Without knowing the full financial status of the groom, they want their daughter to be comfortable in n her husband's house. As for the cooking utensils, you know most bachelors only have few plates, few cutleries.

But as he gets married, his wife will need complete Kitchen utensils. There are even times that, she might need bigger pots to cook in the house. Maybe they are hosting friends or families for a birthday occasion or anything that calls for celebration.

She won't need to go borrow those stuffs like big pots, mortar, big bowls, big trays etc. The mom will provide everything during the marriage.

Another reason for this is that. Some men are fun of having querells with their wife's every now and then. They will call the woman names. They mostly tell her to pack her bag and leave his house. That she didn't even bring anything to the house when he married her. Some will even claimed that,he picked her from the gutter and wretched. But with things like this, every groom will have some respect for his wife to some extent.
