Due to Intermarriages across language groups and races, Not all is what it seems in Kenya.
Kikuyus,Swahilis and Taitas are Bantus but differ in skin color even with their linguistic kin. Taita had arab traders passing through for centuries and interactions occured thus racially, Taitas are closer to the Swahili but linguistically, they are closer to the Mijikenda Pare and Usambara .They are also predominantly Christian while Swahilis are Muslims.
Swahilis are counted as Bantu, even though a large number look like Yemenis and Omanis especially if their bloodlines are more Arab than African. In Lamu,Swahilis are almost indistinguishable from the Coastal Arabs of Kenya.
Kikuyus are the most complex, originally Kikuyus were a bantu tribe that settled in Central Kenya, absorbing the Cushitic Athi and the Bushmen Gumba. Later, some migration occurred from the North, claimed to be from Ethiopia, then the Maasai civil wars drove many Maasai into Kiambu and Nyeri.At the same time, Arab traders interacted with Kikuyus from Nyeri and Southern Kiambu and Finally large scale European settlement in Central Kenya as well as the establishment of Mission stations all over Kikuyuland saw European genes intorduced into the Kikuyu community. The physical features however do differ from one county to another. Muranga Kikuyus are typically dark to a chocolate complexion.They are considered to be the original kikuyusince Kikuyus actually moved north and south from Muranga.Europeans only settled in Lower Muranga which was then sparsely populated .Kirinyaga Kikuyu are also generally dark as you move Eastwards from Nyeri.Kirinyaga only recieved Maasai settlement in their county. Nyeri and Kiambu which are the most populous counties in Kikuyuland are the most diverse. You will find Tall and Dark Kikuyus due to Maasai Ancestry(Jomo Kenyatta, Wangari Maathai) Light skinned Kikuyus(Ephraim Maina,Njoki Ndungu, Malonza Chege,Branda Wairimu) and those in between. Rift Valley Kikuyus are a mix of all the counties so they exhibit all characteristics of Kikuyus.
