World1....I have seen posts on this forum claiming plantain is ready for harvest at 9-10months , some say over a year, which is it exactly?
How do plantains typically mature? do they mature in batches or all at once?
If the plantain trees are over 13 months with no fruits, what are the things one can do to speed up the fruiting, or does that mean such tree will never fruit?

@World 1, I have just three questions, if u can help me answer these three questions, I'll always be grateful to you.
(1) The plantain suckers that are initially bought for planting are usually treated and protected against nematodes and other pests. However, when these suckers germinate and produce fruits, they die leaving behind new suckers. Since these new suckers are untreated, how are then now protected from nematodes & other pests? Is they any special chemical/pesticide for this?
(2) Improved plantain species take at least 9 months to reach harvest, during this period, the farm must be taken care of and weed must be controlled, this might cost some good money. Please, what is the most cost effective way to control weeds.
(3) Finally, sometimes farm security is always a problem. Plantain farms are vulnerable to invasion by monkeys and theft by man. Paying people from day 1 - 9 months to move around and secure one's farm may cost more than 50% of the income depending on size of the farm, & the cost of labour in the environment where one's farm is located. Please, how do you take care of this?
Thank u & God bless. Waiting eagerly for the answers...

Sorry for replying late been busy with our WABI project.
The mature in batches
I don't know why a 13 months plantain will not fruit.
where is the source of your suckers?
Is it well taking care of, I mean did you feed the plantain well?
Is this problem affecting all your olantaing or few?

1. You will have to retreat the new suckers but if you feed your Plantain very well the forget nematodes

2.you can use nylon muching technology

3. Security challenges differs per location so no standard solution.
Firstly the case monkey buy gun or dog.
Secondly for human being do perimeter fence with moringa or jathropha we they are 2months old add barb wire around the tree and make sure there is no weed or bushes in and around the farm.

Oh no, I don't have that problem. I just wanted to be clear on what the maturity period should be. Some say 9mons, some say 13. And also what to expect when harvest comes because most articles make it seem you harvest all at once . And I also wanted check if all the planted suckers will make it or fruit. Thanks.

It can be 9 ,12 , 15 or 18 moth all depends on the sucker planted.
If the source of your suckers is good you don't have proplem.
They cant mature at the same time but you will harvest all at the specify time given buy the sucker seller.

have u tested the practicality of using mulching film for plantain?
I dont think it will work for plantain considering thw roots and how the suckers produce.

I had intended to convert an oil palm plantation to plantain but people advise that the oil palm had suck up most of the nutrients in the soil and that will make the plantain stunted and low yield. Further more, It will cost so much to procure enough fertilizer that can reclaim back the land.

Is that correct? If I want to fallow the land, how long should I keep it after clearing the oil palm

Hello everyone,
Am an Agribusiness Consultant based in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria.
My company is Natural Nutrient Limited.

LET'S DISCUSSED EVERYTHING ABOUT SETTING UP A PLANTAIN FARM.
What is a Plantain?
Plantains are a member of the banana family. They are a starchy, low in sugar variety that is cooked before serving as it is unsuitable raw.

Unlike starting other tree farms, starting a plantain farm and growing plantain are easier and less complicated.
Although growing plantain still requires ones attention, the level of skill required is not as intensive as other trees.
Here are a few guidelines in growing plantain and starting a plantain farm.

Step 1.
LAND PROCUREMENT
The first thing to consider in starting a plantain farm is looking for the right climate. Plantain cannot thrive in an environment that is too hot or too cold. The proposed land/soil for your plantain farm must be a well drain land that is rich and naturally fertilized but If such is not available, you can create compost and add chicken manure to your existing land.

Now that you have the land what next?

Based on the bolded, it means that Plantain cannot thrive on the Jos Plateau.
Abi OP?

Why promise no more questions?
Abeg fire more questions o jare. That is what will generate more information useful for those in the business already and those contemplating [seriously or not] to start.

Thanks a lot world1 for your labour of love, hotmas911 as well as Seun and the mods who put this on the FP.

Hopefully many NLers have been inspired to see the potentials and will aggressively explore rather than simply wait for some underpaying employment or handouts from leaders who steal our heritage and so DEPRIVE us of the very BASIC amenities of modern life.

You can START small, make adequate SACRIFICE for a long time thereafter by continuously PLOUGHING BACK your profit to keep growing the business.

At every point you will have to creatively leverage on different credit/loan opportunities.

Op well done. Even d info u hv given 4free will cost in some other places. My only advise is to be honest @ all times. People will still ask questions n look up to u; they will even respect u more even if ure not handing out d freebies. Don't promise free land (ehnnnn!) or seeds/suckers if you know u can't deliver. Una when dey find free land for Naija (lol) I bah 2u sha!

The best place to cultivate plantain is a swappy land or clay soil. If u do otherwise the harvest will be slow.
