The definition of Kenge is to crack .

I am not sure if delishpot is correct or not cos that music was not of my time. I was a kid when it was the music of every Ogbo in Kalabari so I d not know if they said kengeba or kien aga ba or ke anga ba..
If it is kengeba, I m not sure kengeba means anything tho. Cos no one would say I will crack or peel ( a kengeba )

Kenge actually means to crack. So if the woman was singing about her skin sickness it has to be a kind of sickness that kenge is the symptom of and not the name of the sickness. Ari oju kenge ari ( Her skin was cracking )..

But I am not sure she meant oju kenge symptom .

Now Ah minji birite means I have taken my bath and not I ll be taking my bath..
I ll be taking my bath is ( a minji birite bebe )..

in be ye be ye balama.... Ah ke anga ba balama ( this makes more sense than a kengeba )

AH KE ANGA BA means I will live with it ( I do not care ).. while , In be ye be ye means ( what ever they say )

The message there fore would be... what ever they say I do not care don't worry ( in be ye be ye ah ke angaba balama ) .

The Earliest Kalabari groups or settlements are

1. Ke
2, Oporoama
3. Ifoko
4. Minama
5. Abisse / Oloma
6. Ekuleama
7. Angulama
8. Ebema
9. Ibelema krakrama
10. Soku
11. Kula
12. Tombia
13. Market settlement called Obu Ama. ( Several Ijaw people traded with the Ikweres .
14. Kalabari town ( Calabar )
15 Torusarama piri ( Ke anga be ama )

Other settlements founded later

16. Ido
17. Tema
18. Ogru ama ( Ba- kana )
19 Abalama

Ancient Non Ijaw communities within Kalabari kingdom

20. Bukuma
21 Obonnoma

History of these people ( settlements ) or groups is what gives a finer picture of the History of KALABARI KINGDOM....

There was however no KINGDOM prior to King Amakiri.

Each of these settlements were independent settlements prior to King Amakiri.

Ancient Kalabari settlement ( Calabar ) was the first to have contact with Europeans in the 15th century.
Several rulers of the place and people existed before one Owuere ye Daba became known in the 16th century.
He controlled the slave trade on the river Calabar where he served as middle man between Portuguese ship dwelling slave traders and the hinterland Arochukwu Igbos at the mouth of the river .

These Ijaw people had Efik neighbors and had among them a more influential group who called themselves Koro ame that claimed to be ancestors of one Opukoroye . There were other families also .
Some times the Koro ame were also known as Awome or perhaps Awome was another group of Ijaws that lived in the settlement .

The settlement was abandoned in the early 17th century during the reign of Owuere ye Daba.. It was due to the treatment of the new slave traders who had dislodged the Portuguese. They were the Dutch. The Dutch chose to enslave the people so the people fled after some brutal encounter. This was cos of on going war between the European slave traders in the region. Eventually, the French took over control and in no time the English dislodged the French.

The Ijaw people however, abandoned the place and scattered themselves to new settlements West ward . Some settled among the Okoloma while the Bulk of them went further West to join another Ijaw settlers in the what was called TORUSARAMA PIRI.

Torusarama piri was beehive of activities and it quickly became a center of trade due to its location. .

It was in Torusarama piri the making of the KINGDOM known as KALABARI KINGDOM happened..

Torusarama piri was said to be initially settled by Ijaw people along their various wards.. The settlers were mainly from the early groups mentioned above and other Ijaws far away..

( To be Continued..)

For once commit yourself to putting all this trash into a book under your real name and have it published so the Word can know who you are, and characterize you as the worthless intellectual midget that you really are.

Hi Everyone, I happen to bear the surname Iyalla but i am from Benue state. However, my dad (in blessed memory) did tell me that his forefathers may have migrated from the south south to where they currently are. I would like to know my true origins from any Iyalla who would be willing to help me. Thanks

Your apparent forefather Chief Iyalla, history from his teenage years to his last great war, is in the book, "The True Kalabari History...". It is in amazon.com at

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0988996073/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1448777988&sr=8-1&pi=SL75_QL70&keywords=opubo+g+benebo

Get a copy and you can read more there than any one here can tell you about Chief Iyalla.

Main article: Ijoid languages
The Ijaw speak nine closely-related Niger-Congo languages, all of which belong to the Ijoid branch of the Niger-Congo tree. The primary division between the Ijo languages is that between Eastern Ijo and Western Ijo, the most important of the former group of languages being Izon, which is spoken by about four million people. There are two prominent groupings of this language. The first group is nominally termed "Western" or "Central" Ijaw or Izon, and consists of "Western" Ijaw speakers (Ekeremo-Sagbama(Mein), Bassan, Apoi, Arogbo, Bumo, Kabuowei, Ogboin, Tarakiri, etc variety) as well Kolokuma-Opokuma (Yenagoa and the vicinity). Nembe-Brass and Akassa (Akaha) dialects are referred to as "Ijo South-East". These groups, since 1996, mainly constitutes Bayelsa State, but spills over to Delta, Edo and Ondo States. Biseni and Okodia dialect are termded "Inland" Ijo The other major group is Kalabari. Kalabari is an "Eastern" Ijaw language but the term "Eastern Ijaw" is not the normal nomenclature. Kalabari is the name one of the clans of the Ijaws that reside on the eastern side of the Niger-Delta (Abonnema, Buguma, Bakana, Degema etc who form a major group in Rivers State, hence their involvement in the fight for greater oil control. Other "Eastern" Ijaw clans are the Okrika, Ibani (the natives of Bonny, Finima and Opobo) and Nkoroo. They are neighbours to the Kalabari in present day Rivers State of Nigeria.

Other related Ijo sub-groups which have distinct linguistic relations but very close blood (i.e genetic), cultural and territorial homogenity with the rest of the Ijaw are Epie-Atisa clan, Engenni people and Udekama (which speak Delta Edoid Languages). Others are Ogbia clan, Bukuma, Abuloma (Obulom) and Andoni (which speak Delta Cross languages).

It was discovered in the 1980s that a nearly-extinct Berbice Creole Dutch, spoken in Guyana, is based on Ijo lexicon and grammar. Its nearest relative seems to be Eastern Ijo, most likely Kalabari (Kouwenberg 1994).

If the ijaw speak nine languages, can they truly be considered as just one tribe?
Even if the languages are related, are they mutually intelligible?
I understand that western izon and eastern ijo are unable to communicate with each other in the same language. Ogbia is a different language altogether. So are Ogoni, Andoni, Kalabari & Obulom. People need to look properly into this matter.
Ijaw is not one tribe.

Hello Bros KIWI,

It's quite a while now, i have been offline, missed you all.
Permit me to comment on Killayut's recent post concerning descendants of Berepiki staying outside the Homestead, Berepiki's Compound.
First, I would want to point out that, it sound strange and worrisome for Killayut, TOM Alabraba; to accuse other Berepiki descendants for not living and growing up within the Berepiki homestaed, Because, the Tom i know if my memory still serves me well, Did not live and grow up in berepiki's compound in Bakana, rather he he lived in Iyalla's Compound, precisely Elder solomon iyalla's compound, popularly called abraham solo wari, besides the christ army Church.
Other well known friends and relatives in same compound with TOM are IGONIKONYE, IBISO YELLOWE, TARIBO YELLOWE, Dr. Bob Yellowe, Akonte Alabraba, Mr. Jene Braide just to mention a few.
So to acuse others like Bros Kiwi for their preference for Iyalla compound over Berepiki is really uncalled for.
The Tom i know, whose mother i only got to know recently is a Berepiki, introduced to me by my mum. I respected and admired TOM while he was in Bakana, not even knowing then, he was a relative.
If it is the same TOM, as described above, Then i say, " I bote" " I bolate ", because for a very long long time he was outside the country, precisely he left Bakana for America.
And if it's you, the same Tom, I would rather you Help and encourage Bros KIWI return and settle down to bring his wealth of experience to enhance the lives of fellow folks, just the WAY our Brother Ken Yellowe is doing by investing in GAS GATHERING PROJECTS, whereby many gain means of lively hood, Ken Yellowe is from the Bagshaw extraction, who left the shores whilse he was a baby. He is touching lives.
If i still have the chance to grow up in that environment i'll still choose to live in Iyalla's compound for many reasons, though some of the reasons may not hold water in today's Bakana. More because negative forces had polluted the entire landscape.

So much generational lies on this thread. Kalabari has no meaning in Ijaw.

Kalabari old name was New Kalabar. The area first settled by the Igbos with Igbo kings. Then the Efik influx brought the Efik into prominence in the area and thus the area was recorded in their name by the seafarers : Kalabar (New Kalabar). The agressive boat dwellers known as the Ijaw came last. Over centuries displacing the Igbo and Efik populations and absorbing the rest.

They displaced and almost totally absorbed the Igbos at Okrika. Okrika's Igbo heritage only remains only minute traces. They have almost completed absorbed the Igbos of Nembe. The Oru remnants of the Igbo race at Nun are gone forever. Completely absorbed.

This tendency to revise history is very bad from the boat dwelling Ijaws. Saying Kalabari means Kala and Bari is a devilish falsification. Kalabari's origin points to Igbo and Efik. Though they are nearly completely Ijawnized now.

Mr man! There's nothing like igbo people in Okrika, any Igbo you see in Okrika are either descendant of slaves or are foreigners living there. There are no indigenous igbos in Okrika be guide.
