So u sef dey see dem? In other news can I drive with my nigeria international drivers licence alone without needing an international drivers permit in states like maryland and texas?

They permit it for a short duration of time which I don't know. Work towards getting your state driver's license soon after you get there.

You didn't post the name of the school for personal reasons?. You don't want people to come and occupy the space meant for only you yea? Or you don't want them to take back their scholarship due to large number of applicants that may wanna seek for scholarship after you tell us the name of the school... Mtschew
QueenID:

When I posted my transcript.. I stated that I was interviewed on the 1st which was Friday...
The question I asked when I put the weds to fri date was because I wanted it to be a general question for all the people that were interviewed between weds and fri...

I didn't post the name of my school for personal reasons..

And when I went through people's transcripts.. I didn't have any business with the name of their school...all I wanted to know was how to prepare, the questions likely asked and how to structure my responses..it helped me...

I don't want any quarrel over this pls...it's not an issue..

Thanks

[quote author=dickoflife post=47342903]You are welcome.
My 2 cents on this matter goes thus:
As a first time traveller be neutral in your submissions. Be firm in response and not overbearing or abusive. The first check you will get is the airline staff. Some are prone to ask stupid questions like where are you going? What is your purpose and all.. Kindly restate its none of their biz and ask them to check you in and move on. Next is customs, try not to carry banned items or those in liquid form so you do not have a problem. Stand your ground that you will not drop a dime. Next is the immigration checkpoint which is where passports are tendered. Do not look at them directly, pose an air of non chalance, to show you care not about what he does and answer questions firmly. Do not allow them bully you. After you are done some ndlea and sss officers usually gather at the point of leaving the immigration counter, some will demand to see your passport. They do not have the right. Be firm in making them understand that. Drug agents are not empowered to stop and harrass. That's what the immigration official is for. Yellow card isn't needed to board a flight to the US. The issues of pta or bta also concerns no immigration official as long as you have a visa you can board a flight without any issue. The issue arises at the point of entry however, because it is expected that you have 1000$ to cover contigencies. Should anyone attack you over this they do not have the right. It is not their duty but rather that of those at the point of entry.. Lastly if you are going to atlanta abeg don't book houston ticket and expect angel zebrudayah to clear the way for you. Try as much as possible to get tickets to a neighbouring state with a connecting local flight or bus pass to your final destination. I did this by buying aticket to chicago and booked a bus pass for michigan, grand rapids slated for the next day as my flight lands by 9:45 pm local time. Lastly please do not carry foodstuffs as if the national research institute needs them for pharmacology purposes, this usually causes delays at point of entry and in most cases secondary examination. A case in point is that of mine in Istanbul few years back and also at Vnukovo airport. From then I decided carrying food from one continent to the other should majorly be the job of migrating birds. I hope this epistle has helped. See ya all on the other side (I mean Amelika o not heaven)[/]oga mi sir.. I can see you're ready to miss your flight.. Those sss and ndlea guys will ask to see your passport and it won't cost u anything to show them unless you want them to waste your time.. Biko just answer their yeye questions and do as you're asked... No be today police dey do road safety work, That should not be a time to claim right

This thread is fast turning to an e-fight thread, straying from the purpose for which it was created.

Guys, sheath your swords. We all need to learn to ignore. When a conversation is getting out of hand turning into an altercation, silence is the best. Being silent does not portray foolishness or cowardice. It helps to avoid further mess. What's even the point of fighting on a faceless forum? We all aim to come study in the US, but I must warn that matters like this (exchanging words during an altercation can put one in trouble). I witnessed a similar experience at my work place on campus just few days ago.

I walked into my work section as my shift commenced and met two other co-workers (black guys) exchanging words. Work pressure at that time apparently told on them. Although they never went physical, they were obviously furious at each other and they talked so fast that it became difficult for me to clearly hear what they said. I spoke to both of them to calm down. While one did the other kept on talking and stoked another fire. It was getting out of hand. I had to call the manager.

To cut the story short, on top 'ordinary' altercation, as the only witness (note that I met them exchanging words so I didn't know the root course of the issue) I gave a verbal statement on 2 different occasions to the Manager and another Oga, a written statement on another occasion, and on Tuesday again I was called up by one of the Vice Presidents (Deputy VC) of the school to come and relay what I witnessed. The guy who kept on talking happens to be a Senior in the undergraduate level. He was fired! Now his studentship is on the line. The VP told me she may call on me again.

My point is this: We should drop our 'fights' and muscle flexing at the MMIA or wherever in Nigeria before boarding the plane.

The truth is that we Nigerians can be very superstitious. There's nothing we can do about it. Plus it's human nature to try get as much as possible while giving away as little as possible. I think we have all made it clear that that behavior is detrimental to the purposes of this thread. However I trust we still have enough non superstitious people on this thread to keep it going.

As an aside...most people attribute their interview successes to God's grace. So this is a question to them: Doesn't God's grace cover you even if you post your school details in your transcript? Or does God's grace evaporate when you post your transcript, then He turns you over to the witches and wizards?

It seems a lot of us are more scared of witches and wizards than we fear God.

1. How much is the minimum PTA to carry in cash for a traveller?...
PTA are hard to get now so maybe you mean Cash. You can carry any amount however anything over $10,000 u must declare it on the custom form. If you don’t declare it and they find out it can be seized. So in this economy no make them seize ur money. Declare anything over 10K and be open about it if its your school fees, and the source of the money but then there is a safety issue . Do you really want to travel with so much?. Dont keep your money in your checked bag or it might grow legs. Keep cash close to you at all times

2. Do we need yellow card also called vaccine card to get to the US? ……
I never been asked for Yellow card but I have heard of it . This is a Nigeria airport thing, not sure what its used for or if they ask maybe depending on who u meet . The US airport dont ask or require of it , any immunization thing is for ur school not airport

3. Can any immigration official stop an individual from travelling for whatever reason and what is to be done in such a case? …
Very rare but the only reason I can think of is travelling after your i20 start date . If u are entering in a city far from your school then depending on the POE u meet , be ready to explain or show your continuing ticket (Some ask u some dont) . If you look suspicious then they can pull you out for questions but i doubt that for a student .

4. Do you need to give anybody money as a first timer?
Its so shameful the way the Nigerian airport staff beg for money and they do it so shamelessly open . Me I just carry face. If u carry too much naija food stuff then they might waste your time to give them money . You can have little change for that if u want or just strong your face that you no get money.

5. And likely questions to be asked at the point of entry…..
No need to prepare for this . Just be honest and answer the questions asked. Make sure all your school documents are with you and not in your checked bags. Have them ready at POE .

Weigh your bag before u leave so its within tolerance, no liquid in ur hand luggage or it will go into the dustbin for example perfume. Put it in your checked bag.

Remember traffic so get to the airport in good time. Give at least 2 to 3 hours to departing time. If you have a connecting flight be mindful of your next flight and make sure you are at that boarding gate well in time. If you are very tired and might sleep off , set an alarm because I have slept off at the boarding gate and shockingly nobody woke me up so I missed that flight sitting right at the gate embarassed . Airline brought down my luggage and off it went then i woke up

you be fine though .....Enjoy your trip

Can i send you a pm? Thx

Omo, this unusual killing go cause trouble o. I've had several one on one debates with black folks here and seem not to fathom why black communities are not safe. In Chicago, 60 people got shot the weekend of July 4th, this is black gang against another black gang. They should start by making the black folks understand first that all black lives matter. Statistics recently reveal that black to black killings is way more than white cops killing blacks. I wonder which one needs more attention.

I used to think the blacks were the major cause of the problem but with recent happenings and digging a bit deeper, I'm not too sure anymore. America seems to have some serious race issues still. But that's probably the least of an F1 visa holder's concerns.

Omo I feel you o. And I believe that's actually the best way. But if it's just to show them your passport I think you can just humor them. Also since they are SSS they can actually cause a lot of problems and probably have the right to inspect people. You know some naija laws are not well defined. When are you leaving?

Get an original print out and show them at the POE. If asked let them know no direct flight from Nigeria and that's the cheapest you have seen. Make sure you have the printout of a confirmed local flight. But ensure you don't go too early also. Like you are going 29 days before school resumes and then you head for Texas direct whereas your school is in new york.
