Ekofisk:
Late Post: 11:00 AM Slot. Lagos Consulate

Status: Approved

Duration: 3 – 4 Minutes

I started reading from Part 4 and I believe there’s more than enough information for anyone as regards US-Visa Interview. Albeit, it’s important I share this overdue experience.

I tried as much as I could to be loud and exude boldness though my heart was pounding very fast (Nervousness is permissible). I was expecting a more private interview zone based on the YouTube videos I watched. Anyway, I practically lost cognizance of the fact that people were listening during the course of the interview.

VO: Good Morning
Ekofisk: Hello, Good Morning
VO: Why are you going to the US?
Ekofisk: I’m heading to the US for my masters degree in Petroleum Engineering at TTU.
VO: What do you do?
Ekofisk: I provide research support for Dr. X (VO Cuts-in)
VO: What’s the research about and what’s your role?
Ekofisk: Fluid Characterization and EOS modelling of PVT Experiments. My role is to provide research support by reviewing published literatures, software simulation of PVT experiments, Sourcing for PVT data of characterized fluid samples from Niger Delta fields amongst other sundry activities.
VO: What’s the field of this research?
Ekofisk: Petroleum Engineering
VO: Do you have a BSc.
Ekofisk: Yes I have a BSc. in Petroleum Engineering
VO: What will you do with your degree?
Ekofisk: I’ll come back to Nigeria to work as a Petrophysicist or Reservoir Engineer
VO: (Stops typing and stares right at me)
VO: Is that a smart decision given all the issues…. (I had to cut-in because I knew what she was driving at. It’s either the recent attack on oil installations or the slump in crude oil price. I tackled the latter)
Ekofisk: Absolutely, it’s a smart decision. I expect that in 2 years the price of crude will have improved and stabilized. The industry has experienced price slumps through history so I’m not going to make a career decision based on the existing market situation. Also, I can always focus on research and academia. (I was ready to keep on talking but she started typing again so I had to stop.)
VO: Who is sponsoring you?
Ekofisk: My Guardian….I noticed that she hasn’t looked at the I-20 so I added the fact that I got a scholarship that qualified me for instate tuition. (I didn’t plan to say this).
VO: Types for two minutes or thereabout...”Your Visa has been approved. Pick it up in three days”.
Ekofisk: Alright, thank you!

You are one smart being. You totally deserved it. Congrats!

essayHelp:

- Go to thegradcafe survey results page and search for your school and department. On the comments column, note the number of students with funding.

- Go to the Edulix forum and read up on all the posts on 'the school specific' thread for your school. Also, read the results thread, from 2012 to present, for your department and note the proportion of students indicating funding offers.

- Join the MS in US groups for Fall 2015 and 2016 on Facebook. Search the groups with a query that contains your school and department (remember to use the common acronyms associated with them, too). Note the number of incoming students with funding offers.

- You can also mail students already in the department to inquire about funding. Please do not ask them if there is funding in the department -- that is too generic. Try to ask for the specific number of students in their cohort who are funded through assistantships (and probably the number that obtained funding after the first/second semester).

Wow i really don’t know how to feel right now.

Here is my story, I applied to study in Canada late 2014, my application was refused for insufficient funds for tuition and living expenses even though I paid first semester of my tuition (7000) and my sponsor had over 25M in her account
I reapplied again but it was refused for insufficient funds for tuition and personal assets, I realized the embassy wanted to see my own fund so Included my fixed deposits, my own statements and stock portfolio, paid off the entire tuition of 27,500 and applied the third time but the embassy did a full 180 reverse and refused my application for "your purpose of visit and length of stay". I was very sad and infuriated that the visa officers there are just playing games with me.
I so much wanted to study in Canada as my older brother and friends are all there but i knew it was time to look elsewhere for my graduate studies.
I was going to apply to Australia, which was my second option, but my entire family discouraged me and gave me zero moral support. They said Australia is far and out of the way so they won't be able to visit. They suggested applying to US.
Well i have always seen US as the big brother to Canada, so if Canada could do that to me i didn’t expect to stand a chance with the US.
I decided to process both countries Australia and US simultaneously; i contracted a renowned education agency that frustrated my life for months all in the name of processing my application. I have had to postpone my admission more than twice and last week after much quarrel, i received my i20 from them. i asked them when my application would be finished off, they said I should print another statement and they provided a list of another fresh documents different from the ones i already gave them.
I decided to conclude my application myself and ignore them.
I reviewed my ds-160 form, booked an appointment for today and submitted it.
As early as 6:50, i received an email from the school i applied to in Australia; it was an admission offer from the CQU Australia. (Of all mornings na this morning wey i dey go interview wey una go send am? well i took it as sign of better things to come).
I took a shower, ate better rice and plantain, went over my documents and left home around 11:30 for my interview schedule for 2:15.
I went through all the security process, when i got into the interview hall, o boy i was dazed to see people being interviewed openly. My moral dropped to -100%, my legs could not carry me any longer.
I am naturally a shy and introverted person so being interview openly was the least i expected.
One guy was being serious investigated, I’m not sure what the guy did but his passport was taken inside and he was left standing at the booth for over 15mins.

Well here goes the transcript

Me: Good day Sir
VO: Good Afternoon.
VO: Who is XXXXXX?
Me: XXXXXXX is my oldest sibling
VO: Why did you choose SNHU
ME: (With so much studding and choking) The Program MS Information Technology at SNHU lay emphasis on bridging the gap between communication, technology and business solution. It has three majors, Network security, Database management and Web design. I am interested in the Network security Major. (Trust me this didn't come out as you have read it, i could barely understand myself while i was saying it)

VO: Which Other school did you apply to?
Me: I applied to Valparaiso and WKU Western Kentucky University
VO: What does XXXXXXX do for a living?
Me: XXXXXX is an assistant bank manager at YYYYYYbank
VO: What do you do?
ME: I work at BBBBBBBBBBhotel as an IT administrator.
VO: Where is BBBBBBBB LOCATED?
Me: Lekki phase one
VO: Do you have family in US
ME: NO
VO: Do you have relatives in US
ME: NO
VO: Do you have friends in US (by now he has dropped my passport in a tray beside him and brought out a white paper.)
Me: No, oh Yes i do (V.O pauses and holds back the white paper), i explained further " it’s a childhood friend who left when we were still in secondary school).
VO: In which state does he live?
Me: Texas (V.O give me the white paper)
VO: Your Visa has been approved pick up your passport in 3 days’ time.
Till now i am still dazed and in disbelieve, there was nothing spectacular about what i said adding to the fact that i choked severally while saying it. The VO was virtually not interested in what i had to say as he was looking at his computer screen and typing 90% of the interview duration.

Finally I will be giving up my Australian dream to embrace what the LORD has done.
I am not the most prayerful, sinless or holy, but what i happened to me today was clearly a divine intervention.
I called my mother to tell her and she is already crying saying
"So you are going to staying in that country alone" (She would have preferred Canada so I will be close to my brother)
I am the last child of my family, everyone’s favorite at home and i am very hard working too.
To everyone out there, i think there is a little bit of faith in everything we do, sometimes we can't fight faith.
Your faith may be somewhere else while you look in another, but must importantly don't give up.

Please house, i will be needing contact of anyone already in Southern New Hampshire University for further enquiries.
God bless you all and thank you for your contributions so far.

One love

You can't pay sevis fee from Nigeria. Someone outside US can make the payment for you or you go to Cotonou and get it done..

Posting this transcript on behalf of my aunt (not on NL) to give back and replenish the thread for prospective applicants to learn.

Profile: HND, Msc, Works in a bank, been to the US before, applied to Lone Star College, Kingwood, Houston Texas, Nursing.

Visa Type: F1 and F2 (for my 12 year old son)

Interview Time: 6:30am

Visa approved at Lagos.

V.O: Gudmorning
Me : Good Morning
My Son: How are you today?

V.O: Oh am good and you?

My Son: Am very fine.

V.O: Can I have your passport?

Me: Passport passed to him?

V.O: Your 1-20 please?

Me: 1-20 Passed to him.

V.O: Why this Course and tell me more about it?

Me: My dream job had always been a job where I can save lives. The flair for it got increased when I started living with my foster parents who now happened to be a nurse. However, I couldn’t secure admission to study Nursing as at that time but the urge never left me. The urge became more stronger some years back when I lost a close family member to diabetis due to ignorance and at that time I had wished I was a Nurse. She wouldn’t have died. I further discussed this with my husband who supported my idea and decided we start planning for this to come to reality. In this vein, we agreed to invest into health care for the use of the people.

V.O: Why this School?

Me: I had an opportunity to visit this School during my last visit to the US and discussed extensively with the International Student Advisor.

V.O: Okay that’s fine. Excuse me for a minute
He left with the 1-20 (Come see prayers o).
He came back and faced his system, after some minutes the next I heard was go to Victoria Island and pick your visas.

I bless the name of the Lord.

You can still look into the Canadian Express Entry System and see if you have the points and put in the application now ....so by the time u are
graduating you have two options and can move closer to your brother if u want

I guess d only thing is d annoying application fees since ur focus is on ur fees first. ...but if u can do it cool . Many naija i knw back then did Canadian as a student as backup so as H1b no show , oya off to where u have PR.

there isnt really much difference between the two, besides the fact the international graduate application fee is to be paid by international applicants which often times is more than the normal graduate application fee.
for instance the gradaute application fee for kansas state university is $65 while the international gradaute application fee is $75

I need your advice pls. I was recently denied visa at the Abuja Embassy under the 214(b). We had barely started the interview, after she asked how many Universities I applied to and what course, I was expecting why the course then she asked who's sponsoring you and what does the person do, I was staggered off as it wasn't the next question in my subconscious. Anyways I stuttered, and she was brought out a pink-red letter.

To Present day... I'm filling out a new D-160 form having been offered admission to another school with GA offer. Please guys how do I go on with this and not rupture my chances of getting an approved visa. Thank you.
