According to you, mechanical engineer should know how to troubleshoot/ resolve faults in motors abi..
Go read more about cadres of field you have no knowledge of...
..
It's Nigerian system that need factory reset and not the graduates..
If engineer can easily find jobs in Total, Agip, NNPC, Ford Motor,.Peugeot, Toyota, TCN, Power generating companies,,Microsoft, HP, Apple, Foxcom, Nokia etc..
Economist/Accountants can also easily get in PWCooper, Banks, financial institutions....
Doctors/Nurses also finding and practicing their profession in the health sector easily....
All graduate getting a job strictly relating to their fields of study then everything will get back on track.
Experience is,a most and after years of experience in your field the next step is self employment to give way for other graduates.
you're actually making very little sense, why should those companies give you those jobs when they have better trained fellows from places like India, Pakistan, Europe and north America? remember we're talking about the university education system in Nigeria

My degree is not a waste. I learnt beyond the lectures and tutorials. I didn't limit myself to the 'classroom experience.' It was a life experience for me.
I think it depends on what you studied. Some degrees can easily be applied in Nigeria even without seeking for employment. Apart from this, every other thing to me is a waste of time and money. Don't tell me it's all about the knowledge cos I can still get knowledge without wasting time in school.

If I had known, getting skilled would have been the best, at least in auto mec, would have been a boss now in overseas. University degrees are just over hyped, you know what happens when everyone has the same thing, no value - ----

based on the majority votes and reasonable reasons..bottom line nigeria's educational system is a joke.. Most lecturer wnat u to write what they thought u not what u have spent your time researching... My chemistry lecturer does not know why carbon is used as a standard to determine RMM of elements... Sometimes I fell like I am wasting my time...if not for attendance I will not be in class I will teach my self and pass exam...!!
thats y dumb students have the highest gp when they possess high capacity memory to cram and reproduce what the lecturer taught them during exams, I also had a chemistry lecturer that ask questions like "nitrogen is a __________" if u didn't read her handout, u sure kno u failed tha question.

I believe no knowledge is waste. But sometimes i do think 'going to higer institution' is overrated. The main reason why People go to school is to graduate and get a white colar job,but u know what? Most of this white colar job are own by those who never attended higher institution or those who dropped out or those has a very BAD result while in school. You will go to uni to learn accounting for 4years but under one year a mechanical student will under go an accounting trainning and still do better than you who study it for 4 good years. This degree stuff is overrated abeg!

Biochemistry has been fun though but I don't think if given a second chance i'll go for it.
Good thing is- I can still be who I want to be.

So conclusively, while in my final year now I can say the school environment has opened my eyes, thoughts and mind to the real world especially the part where I went for industrial training in a fast moving city like Lagos.

School can't be a waste of time after all...
the sssht u learn about life during that short time of industrial training compared to the years u used in school tells fir itself.

the working place offers more connection, networking, socialization etc than any school environment can ever possible offer, now how does it feel graduating with a degree in building technology with almost zero practical experience only to discover that most successful contractors have no tertiary education?

It depends anyway. I know of people whose connections began from the University as undergraduate due to their relationship with their Professors and members of the University Management (the VC or any other top administrator). One of my friend needed a temporary job as an undergraduate, being a close friend to their University Vice Chancellor in UNIPORT, only a call from their VC to the Head of that company got him the job.

Yes, if you play your cards well, your connection starts from the University as an undergraduate. It depends on how sharp you are anyway. The job(part time) fetched him over 70k per month now. Now imagine when he graduates?

According to Wikipedia, mechanical engineering is the design, analysis, manufacturing , and maintenance of mechanical systems . It is the branch of engineering that involves the design, production, and operation of machinery . It is one of the oldest and broadest of the engineering discipline.

From the definition, mechanical engineering works encompasses a lot of area. So, it is not to build or design cars. We have the automobile engineering and motor vehicle technology disciplines to deal with that. Mechanical Engineers are still involved in the manufacturing process of vehicles.

let me use the word "Vehicles" here instead of cars because vehicles encompass land vehicles. sea vehicles, space vehicles, water vehicles etc.

Mechanical engineering deals with the design, production, manufacturing, and maintenance of devices or structures or mechanical systems. Mechanical engineering is inter discipline field in engineering that is mechanical engineer should in different areas. Unfortunately, our curriculum doesn't involved such just the theoretical aspect which is not applicable in the 21st century industries.

As a mechanical engineer, the first thing he or she should know is how to use spanner to work ICEs that internal combustion engines but it is disheartening that many Nigerian graduates who studied mechanical engineering don't know this because of our "obsolete curriculum" that is archaic in a advanced country.

let me come home now, I studied mechanical engineering from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo Sate. When I was in school the I used to go for the practical during holidays or at leisure time. Then people while laughing at me but today to the glory of God, I am happy. To crown it all, I did my industrial training with one of Toyota Motor Corporation divisions in Nigeria (name withheld for security reasons).

During my industrial training, I was exposed to a lot of machines, equipment etc. I was diligent to learn with them. These machines or equipment were not in my School or you can never found them in any Nigerian best institution. To my knowledge, UI doesn't have them.

During my service year, in our Skills Acquisition Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) I encountered a lot of graduates there, they have nothing to offer. When I talked, they would ask me bros, "where did you learn all these from? " I would just laugh and shocked my head.

Finally, my B.Eng in mechanical engineering is not a waste and can never be a waste because the degree + knowledge+ practicals + theories have skyrocketed me beyond my imagination.

My advice to under graduates and graduates out there who studied/still studying mechanical engineering, learn from the scratch that is from those out there who you think they are nobody. That will set you above the roadside mechanics out there.

my dear, 99.9%of Nigerian lecturers don't have any industrial experience or connection, if they do,they would likely have been working in industry than lecturing, "those who know it do it,those who don't know it, teach it" George Bernard shaw.

his personal connection got him the job not what he learnt at school, a wealthy uncle could even get him a better job with just a phone call, the question remains, can he confidently say that what he learnt in school was worth it?

any lecturer that have political connection would likely be working for the government in places like inec, nafdac or population commission, most politicians are not lecturers biko, they're equally looking for the connection.

funny . me im an electrical engineer . grad from abu . i happen to cherish my degree so much . and i can't be compared with no damned roadside trial and error dude.

and a mech engrs job is not to fix cars pls but to design, create , and optimize . fixing stuff is for technologists .

. @op uni edu is just a guide , you are meant to complement it with self research

To tell you the truth, Nigerian system of education in the university level is just crappy and won't add any skill for you. It's just a total waste of time unless you are innovative & can think outside the box.

Call an electrical engineering graduate to do some simple alternating wiring and he will burn down your house undecided but call a simple electrician for the job & he will do a neat work.

U mentioned that mech engrs create design & optimize...well I am yet to see a made in Nigeria car, unless am living in pluto, nothing tangible have come from our mech engineers.

Or shall I talk of the botanists that doesn't even know the name of species of plant from just one genus. What he knows is what he heard in the class but bring a cassava leaf for identification, his face will change to-->

What of our electronic engrs, the road side phone and computer repairers are far better than them. They only know how to carry files up and down.

Seriously do you want me to go on? The only thing you know there is: where is 201, 302, 411 lectures holding? & you will run like a goat on heat to grab the front seat & at least get D in the course undecided

Nigerian university education system is just wack...graduate and follow others in file carrying.
