Its a fact, the average yoruba mum frowns at the idea of an Ibo daughter-in-law

But, I'm not understanding, why?

The funniest excuse I've heard is that : Ibo women don't make an effort to learn Yoruba culture and pass such ideals to their kids

PLEASE GO AHEAD AND MARRY IGBO IF YOU ARE NOT FROM THE EAST...20years Later return to this post and comment

The dog who wont hear the master's whistle will get lost

IGBO's are wonderful and lovely tribe ONLY WHEN THEY MARRY THEMSELVES.... cross marriage can never work for them... because they are all BORN LEADERS.... HAVING THEIR WAY IS INBRED IN THEM... and it doesn't show when they are singles especially in the ladies but it will over time.

Nonsense!

My Yoruba neighbour is bishop at a local church married to an Igbo woman, that speaks fluent Yoruba and even preach with same.

To the best of my knowledge Yoruba/Igbo marriages are ubiquitous.

Marriage should be by choice not by religion nor ethnicity.
If both of you are good, carry go.

@ OP. Those excuses may not be far-fetched;

an average Ibo girl raised in the East irrespective of how exposed she is will most likely be skeptical/ not marry a Yoruba man cos she's afraid she's going into a family where she'd have to depend on her hubby to translate before she could understand a thing been said, this isn't her big worry but the inability to decipher when she's the topic of a discuss/gossip.

Ibo girls are also worried for what her surrounding community might say. an average ibo man is still bitter about the July 6 1967 event so much that they instill it in their offspring that Yorubas are the Devil himself.

If you see any Ibo girl marrying a Yoruba man, know that she's spent a substantial amount of her life down West and same goes for any Ibo man who does. Reason being that, they're better exposed and have a re-orientation of who the Yorubas really are.

This was able to happen bcs the woman must have some traits of Yoruba culture in her. You said she speaks Yoruba fluently. It's either she was born in the west or started living there at a very tender age. 90 percent of Yorubas don't marry other tribes.
Marry whoever you find love in. Let's say no to tribalism, we are Nigerians.

I have seen a scenario where yoruba mother-in-law threatened the igbo wife to back-off from her son or else she would get barring for life. We should unite and civil ourselves in one spirit and not to discriminate one another - Nigeria is one.

(Only if each one can reach one and each one can teach one, what a much more beautiful nation Nigeria would be.)

No ma'am, born and bred in Igbo land, her husband married her after his NYSC in the east.

Yoruba/Igbo marriage is on the all time high, I'm telling you.

Yorubas ain't clannish only conservative.

But, what I'm not understanding is what is the cause of the apparent hatred Yoruba women have for Ibo ladies

Is it historical or what?

Bro, nothing of such exist.

Tales abound of Yoruba mother in laws, supporting the marriages of Igbo wives to be to their sons, the only clause I've heard is that they must move to the west.

Yorubas ain't tribalist at all, we even more open minded than people believe.

Most Yoruba mothers frown at their sons hooking up with an igbo lady. Each time I make a call in English to a lady, my mother would say "Ma gbe omo Ibo wa fun mi o, ti o ba fe ki n Se adura fun e" meaning " Don't bring an Igbo girl to my house if u really want my blessing"

I don't blame them anyway, because most Igbo ladies are not submissive enough as far as yoruba culture is concern. Yoruba mothers would expect their daughter inlaw to great them with their two knees on ground which is not obtainable in Igbo culture.

My grand mum do tell me same thing in Ekiti dialect " Mo gbe omo gudu eveni a si be o" meaning " Don't bring good evening wife to me" because it is assumed that good evening is the mode of greeting inlaws among Igbo ladies as they can't speak yoruba.

I agree with every other thing you said except the emboldened. Yorubas are one of the major tribes that marries out of their tribe, if not top of that list. But like you said, let's kill tribalism and be just one race ==> HUMAN RACE

Wish i could give a satisfying answers to that, It's something i find belligerent amongst these yoruba mothers arising to their unfair accession over their son's choice of spouse - this is a more causecelebre issue which need serious attainment for clear accentuating.
