We were all seated in the waiting room, hoping upon hopes that Anna survives the surgery. What was she thinking? If anything happens to her, William won't be able to forgive himself. I looked at William, he was no longer the handsome guy that came into my house that morning. He looked different. Was it guilt? His suit has been removed and is on Lois's hand. His tie has been loosened and the hand folded like he was returning from a masonry job. I stood up to go to him but Leonard walked in,memories of what happened in my house came back to my head and I hissed. I had pushed him away and slapped his face. What was happening to my friend, I wondered? He held his face, just where the slap had landed and I stood up. Me: Leonard, get out of my house Leonard: Pamela, let me explain please. Me: I don't want to hear anything. Just get out. He stood up and came to me, he tried holding my hands but I slapped his hands away. anger filling every hole I had in me that moment. Me: Leave Leonard: Look, I know it's going to sound awkward but Pamela, I'm in love with you. Me: What? Leonard: Yes. I don't know how but since that day you walked to the barbeque with me, I've practically not been able to get you out of my head. And I slapped him again! Me: Are you insane? What is wrong with all of you for Christ's sake? Why haven't you made your intentions known all this while? And here I was, trying to make you and Lois work. Leonard: I know. I .... Me: You know? Then why do this? Why fall for me? Why will you even try it in the first place? Leonard: We don't control our emotions Pamela. They just come. Me: I do. Leonard: Then I'm not like you. I'm not. I hide nothing. I have blood in these veins, I have feelings behind this muscles you're seeing. I'm human. Me: Me? And did I ever mention that I've got no feelings? Leonard: I'm sure you don't. But look, I'm sorry about whatever happened here. I just realised you have got your heart all stoned out. No wonder none of your relationships work. He stormed out of my house and I sat down there in confusion. Did he just say that to me? Did my friend, Leonard, mock me just now? I wanted to cry but the tears refused to fall. I just sat down there, staring at the empty wall beside my electronic gadgets. It took me a while to snap out of my thoughts and I headed upstairs, undressed, got into the shower and let the water cool my nerves. I'm not a bad person. I've not just found the right man for me. The Lord's prayer came to my mind and I started saying it, getting to that part, even though I walk through to the valley of the shadow of death, I stopped and started thinking again. Tobe and Anna are on a thin rope. What if they die, for Anna, there will be no thoughts of Williams, for Tobe, there will be no Claire to make his life miserable. They would be happy in the after world. But me, I don't even know the shadow I was walking on, or the shadow I was following. I closed my eyes and heaved a sigh. It was time to work on myself. Once Tobe and Anna are certified healthy, I'll start going on dates, work on my tight schedules and see if I can loosen up a little. Since Leonard could say those words to me, my own Leonard, it means anybody could say anything to me........and I won't allow that. I got out and picked another dress, tied my weavon in a messy ponytail and stepped out without any make up. I got a cab that drove me to the hospital only to realise that Anna had been wheeled to the theatre. And that's how we all sat silently, hearts in our hands, praying to God to spare the life of this innocent girl, to give her a second chance. He walked in and sat beside William, saying something I couldn't hear. Franca was sprawled on the floor, weak from crying. I went to her and joined her on the floor. She looked at me and smiled. I hugged her and we held each other like long lost siblings. Me: She'll be fine. Trust me FranC Franca: I'm sorry for my earlier outburst. It's not William's fault. Me: You don't have to apologise. Anybody in your shoes will act same way. Franca: He's angry at me right? Me: Let's bother about Anna now. Every other thing will come later. She nodded and went back into my arms. We remained that way until the bulb outside the theatre turned off. We all stood up and waited for the doctors to come out and give us the news. Franca: Do you think she'll survive? i nodded, not sure of what I was to say. Just as we expected, two doctors walked out of the theatre. One looked mean and the other had a faint smile. Out of instinct, we went to the doctor with the smile, gathering round him like we were ants going for a cube of sugar while the other doctor walked away without as much as a hello. We looked at the doctor with expectant eyes and his smile gave me hope. It was weak, tired and not sure but I still counted it as something. Lois; Doctor, how was the surgery? How is she? Doctor: The surgery was successful. If luck be on our side, she'll return to consciousness within a day or two, if not, she might slip into coma and we might eventually loose her, but I pray it doesn't get to that. If I may ask, what really happened? Mr William, you know we did this without a doctor's report because of you? William nodded and Franca leaned into me. Leonard: Actually, we just got a call that she shot herself. Doctor: Who shoots herself three times? Three times? I scanned the faces of others and their reaction was just like mine. Doctor: A bullet in the scapula and two in her lower abdomen doesn't look like suicide to me. But anyways, Mr William, I suggest you involve the police immediately. If you don't mind, you'll have to excuse me. I need to freshen up. He walked out without waiting for a response. Who shot Anna? Who wanted her dead? Franca left my side and went to William who enveloped her in a warm embrace. I lowered myself to the nearest chair and carried my head in my hands. Something is amiss. Small Anna? Lois: You alright? She sat beside me, placing William's coat on her laps. I shook my head in the negative and she placed a hand on my shoulder. Lois: It's going to be fine. Like the doctor said, we'll involve the police and get this thing sorted out. Me: But who would hurt Anna? She's just 18. Gosh! Leonard: In this case, two things are involved. We looked up to see him standing beside Lois. Anger quickly replaced whatever feeling I was having then. Leonard: Its either an old enemy from school or someone who wants William Lois: Yes. You're right you know? Leonard: But I don't know, Anna doesn't look like someone who'll be ..... I stood up and walked out of the building. I wasn't going to sit down there and listen to his dumb talks. He wasn't a cop and he sure knows nothing about tracking a killer. I walked to where Lois had packed my car. I leaned on it and closed my eyes, allowing the early afternoon sun wash through me. My life has gone back to seven years ago when I was pushed to run away. But this time, I'm going nowhere. I'll sit and see it through to the end. I'm not going to risk being lonely again because of some guys who don't know when to catch feelings. I'm 27, forgive me, I'll be 27 in a month and some days, yet, the men in my life don't even know what they want. Just the same way I have denied myself sexual satisfaction. My phone vibrated in my hand and I looked at it. It was a phone call from an unknown number. I picked it and put the phone in my ear without saying a word, typical Nigerian right? Lol. Caller: Hello house mate. And it clicked. Claire! Me: Claire? She laughed and my hatred switch got on. Claire: Nice you still remember my voice. Me: The same voice that wants to drag me to insanity. When did you get out from prison killer? You still have a long term to serve Claire: You're in Nigeria baby. Slip money into the right hands and you're a free bird. You don't have to tell me that. I ..... I quickly started walking back into the hospital building, I have to tell William or Harry what was happening. Me: You say? Claire: That I'm hoping you are enjoying it while it lasts. Cause Claire is back to cause chaos in your life. I'm going to take everything away from you. Me: You won't dare. I found Harry first so I dragged him outside. He wanted to vex and protest but seeing the look on my face and the phone on my ear, he complied and I left him. I put the call on loudspeaker and also hit the record button. Why was I just remembering it now. Claire: Watch me. My husband is down, that William's girlfriend is also down. If I take them all out, you ...... Harry smacked his forehead with his palm and fought not to curse out loud. Me: You shot Anna? Claire: My humble self bae. Me: Trust me Claire, you won't get out of this one. I'll kill you myself. Her crude laughter filled my ears and I shifted the phone away a little. Claire: Isn't it you? I was a fool to have ran away once, but listen, you've touched me where it hurt most. You've come back like rat perceiving the smell of poison and I'll treat you like one. I flung my phone and it landed on the floor, crashing into several pieces. I attacked my car but Harry was close enough to stop me. I folded into his hands, hating my weakness, hating my vulnerability, hating my past. The tears fell and Harry held on tight, like I was his baby. Harry: We'll get her, I promise. But i wasn't hearing that. Who would lend me a gun? Who would teach me how to use one. Murder! I wanted to commit murder and the only person I see with a bullet on her head is Claire. Harry helped me up and I got into my car. Harry: Wait up dear, let me inform the others. I nodded and he ran inside. But did I wait? Could I wait? I got into the driver's side and started the ignition, then I drove out of the hospital like a mad woman. Claire is out on the loose again. And I'm not gonna let her hurt the people I love so much. Never. I got to the hospital where Tobe was admitted and parked outside. I got in and made straight for the elevator without giving or replying greetings. Seeing Tobe before I go home to soak myself in liquor is the only soothing remedy to my anguish now. I got to the fourth floor and made straight to the room that was allotted him. The door was slightly open so I got in and saw a doctor looking at him and stroking his arm like he wanted to give him an injection. Me: What'd wrong doc? Is everything okay? He turned and left without saying anything. I sat on the chair beside the bed and held Tobe's hand. The paleness and slow response of his pulse got my heartbeat hammering in torrent. I bent my head and began a silent prayer. When was the last time I prayed? When was the last time I sought for the face of my creator? Another time for me to use the word, "typical". Typical human beings, only remembering God when we are in trouble. My prayer was short but very powerful and sincere. I prayed that life be granted back to the body of this man who's breathing aid is now an oxygen. I did the sign of the cross, pecked his forehead and left the hospital. ----------------------------- So I need your suggestions my friends, help me out here. You have a friend who's bin your everything for a good number of years, only to realise recently that she never considered you as you friend. I got into my car and reversed, about pulling into the road when I saw the "doctor" who was in Tobe's room. He was on a call. Instinct told me immediately that he was not a doctor. He was no longer on the white rob. He was wearing a black top that has a hood, his trouser had this rugged cut all over. I cursed out loud and started heating up my car, ready to run the bastard over. He started walking away and I brought my car to life, put it on full speed and without batting an eyelid, I started racing to his direction. Passersby started screaming and waving at him but he was so engrossed in the call that he didn't notice till he was on the floor. I got out from the car and went to where he was lying, half dead. People began to gather and my heart started beating fast. The security men of the hospital was already at the scene. People were shouting at me, asking that I be beaten since I did it on purpose. Some were asking the security men to help take him into the hospital. Security 1: Madam wetin nau? Why u come jam this man? Me: Let's take him in first. He's a criminal. That was all I could mutter before picking up his phone from the ground. On hearing the word, "criminal", their reactions changed immediately. The security men carried him into the hospital and I followed. The nurses started doing their job, came with a stretcher and wheeled him into the theatre immediately. The second security man stood beside me, like I was going to run away. Me: Can you call the police? Security man: Madam, its not our duty to do that. Me: But I don't have a phone here with me. Call the police please. Security man: You don jam person, come dey blow big grammar for here. Me: Listen, you don't know that man, you don't know what he did. If you won't call the police, take me to the senior doctor immediately. SM: No be for here o. You go pay for all damages first before you speak to our oga. Then I got it. He wanted " eye wey see". How stupid most Nigerians are. I brushed past him and he followed suit. I stopped a nurse Me: Excuse me, how do I see your chief doctor? Nurse: Do you have an appointment? Or a card? Me: No but I'm the lady that hit the guy who's in the theatre now. Nurse: Oh! Come with me. I followed but the security man tapped me on the shoulder. Me: You better not touch me again. Fool The nurse led me to the doctor's office. He was a man in his late fifties. He was reading a medical magazine when we entered. Nurse: Good day chief Doctor: Thank you. He looked up and smiled at me. Nurse: The accident victim was brought in by her. Doctor: Alright. You may leave now. The nurse left and I sat down. He closed the magazine and dropped it on his huge mahogany table. Doctor: What's your name? Me: I'm Pamela, Pamela Bernards. Doctor: How's the victim related to you? Me: He's not related to me. I came here to see a friend of mine who's in coma only for me to see that guy in his ward, dressed as a doctor. I asked him if something was wrong but he didn't respond. He just left. I was about leaving when I saw him outside on a call. That was when it occurred to me that he's not a doctor but an assassin. Doctor: Wait a minute, this friend you came to see, is he the patient who was shot by the wife? Me: Yes doctor. And his wife has escaped from prison. Doctor: What? Me: And she's shot another person. Doctor: I'm calling the police. How can my staff be so careless that anyone can come in here, dress as a doctor and go about his business like he was one of them? They want to spoil the reputation I've built for myself over the years? Or they want me to loose my license? He picked up his phone and made a phone call to the nearest headquarters. 9 Likes |

Haven't been around. Plus I lost my aunt. Making it a total of two I've lost just this ember month. The police were in the hospital just as the guy was wheeled out of the theatre. He only had a few broken bones. The policemen followed the nurses into his ward and handcuffed him to his bed so he won't run away when he wakes up. PM: Excuse me madam, did you see him give the patient anything? Me: No. Its either I was late or early. Pm: Is the patient your husband? Me: No. No. He's a good friend. But it was his wife who shot him. The policeman questioning me looked at his colleague. Me: and she has escaped from prison. Pm: I believe we're talking about Claire Onuoha? Me: Yes. He barked orders to his boys immediately, asking them to post checkpoints all over town. Pm: We just got information about her escape a few days ago but there was no officer from that station, willing to give us information on that. Please forgive us. Me: I'm surprised criminals can freely parade the street these days. Pm: Not to worry madam. We'll report directly to you on this case from now onwards. Me: Fine by me. I handed the criminal's phone to him and nodded in appreciation, saying it would help in their investigation. I dropped my house address with him, bid farewell to the doctor and left the hospital, breathing an air of relief. I would drop by a car wash and wash off the blood stains from my car, stop at an eatery and have a good meal before going home. And once I get home, I'll just tell them what happened at the hospital and nothing more. I got to my favourite car wash and my "friend" quickly jogged to me and I willingly handed him my key. He pledged all loyal and I gave him my weakest smile. I checked for my purse and found it under my seat, took it out and left the car wash, after telling him what I wanted for my car. I looked around and saw a cab, flagged it down and was on my way to my favourite eatery, chittis. We've not rode for five minutes when I saw a guy on a red polo and black chinos flagging down our cab. Driver: Madam, you wan charter or make I dey pick person? Me: So long as you'll get me to my destination, I'm good. He smiled, revealing his set of white teeth before pulling over beside the young man who also had a red boot on his feet. He got in beside me without saying a word to the driver. His cologne filled the car, subduing mine. The driver himself didn't move. It was when I saw his face through the mirror that I knew he wanted the young man to tell him where he was headed. I looked at the guy beside me who was already engrossed on his phone. I tapped him and he looked at me with red eyes. Hmmm! This one must have smoked Indian hemp or SK before coming out Me: You didn't tell him where you're going to. He said something to the driver who brought the car to life and we started our journey in silence. His phone rang a while later and he picked it. "Shes gone........ yes. I can't believe mum had to die now that I need her most......... I was there." he sobbed. "no. I told you she's being sick. Gabriella is with her mother for now........ I put her in the mortuary." I turned to him as he broke down again. I wanted to hold him, to comfort him, but I don't know him or how he'll respond to such act. "I don't know where I'm going...... I just want a quiet place..... I'll talk to you later okay?" He hung up and wiped his eyes with his palm. Me: Its a pity. Sorry for your loss. I heard myself say. He looked at me and nodded, not saying anything. We got to chittis and the driver pulled into the parking lot. I looked at the young man again but then, his attention was on his phone, maybe he was telling friends he had lost his mum. I touched his thigh and he looked at me. Me: Don't be too hard on yourself. I believe the Almighty knows why it has to be this way. Again, he nodded. I paid the cab man and got down from the car, wondering if he doesn't speak to women at all 8 Likes |
