Mikel did not play in the 1-1 game against Barcelona. He was on the bench. When Essien scored the goal, he ran to hug Mikel on the bench. Hiddink made a big error leaving Mikel out of the game, after Mikel's brilliant performance in the first leg against Barcelona. Mikel was a torn in Iniesta's flesh in the first game. Essien got some sticks for missing the clearance which landed the ball at Iniesta's feet but Hiddink bringing in Belletti instead of Mikel to secure the goal was the main error. Belletti was not disciplined to shield the defence and help Essien.
