CHAPTER FOUR

With tears running down her cheeks, she hurriedly followed the medical personnel wheeling Daniel into the operating room.

"I'm sorry madam but you can't go beyond this point," a nurse politely stopped her.

"But__"

"No but ma'm, it's the rule."

She bit her lower lips and lowered her head.

"I'm sorry madam but that is the rule." the nurse apologized due to the sympathetic look on her face.

"It's okay," she muttered in a low murmur.

A doctor soon came forward with two other nurses.

"Victim's name?" he asked.

"Daniel Chibueze." a nurse supplied.

"Any relatives around?"

"Yes sir," the same nurse with the files balanced in her arms replied. "the sister in-law is here."

The doctor stopped abruptly and took a close look at the weeping lady before him. "I will advice you to call his wife."

Oh lord! Where do doctor's bury their hearts!

"His wife is not really in the right state to be here, she's heavily pregnant." the lady replied.

"I still think you should call her," he responded and turned to the nurse with the file. "How bad is it?"

"Very," she replied, looking at the file. "Two bullets."

The lady gasped and they all turned in her direction.
"Sorry." she muttered, in the lowest murmur ever. "I'm really an emotional person."

The nurse nodded and looked down at the file again. "his leg and chest."

"Good," the doctor murmured and braced himself for the task ahead. "any allergies?"

"He is allergic to aspirin." the lady supplied and all heads turned in her direction again. "very allergic." she added.

"Thanks." the doctor said and faced his nurses once more."let's see what we can do, we're only humans."

"Doctor please don't let him die." the lady begged with tears in her eyes.

"Like I said Miss..."

"Miss Titilayo." the lady gave her name.

The doctor nodded. "Miss Titilayo, we're only humans but I assure you that we'll do our best to save your brother in-law's life."

"Thanks doctor."

"One more thing, I still advice you to call his wife. Your sister needs to be aware of her husband's condition even if she's nine months pregnant."

She opened her mouth to protest but the doctor gestured to his team and they walked into the operating room where Daniel was being prepped for the surgery.

She hissed and hurriedly left.

Walking through the large hall leading to the exit, she dialed a number and when the user did not answer, she muttered, "IDIOT" and rushed out.

She flagged down a taxi as soon as she got out. "Driver, Oledo street."

"Two hundred naira." came the short reply.

She nodded and stepped in.

Throughout the short ride to her destination, she was spewing curse words in yoruba, she probably spoke yoruba because she saw the tribal marks on both sides of the driver's face and assumed...no realized, that he's either Igbo or Igala.

"Take your money." she handed the two hundred naira note to the driver and hurried away.

Knowing fully well the kind of neighborhood she was in, she walked with her handbag safely secured under her arms.

Oledo street was a popular street in Abuja; known for it notoriousity and the great number of wayward youth it housed. It was almost more notorious than the much talked about Ajegunle in Lagos.

She rapped on the door loudly when she got to her destination.

"Who the hell is..." the occupant of the house stopped short when he came face to face with her.

"Idiot," she cussed and pushed away the gun he pointed at her when he opened the door.

"Hello, honey."

"Don't honey me, idiot why don't you ever do things right?"

"Hey baby, what did I do wrong this time around?" he asked, wrapping his hand around her waist.

"Don't even dare pretend." she said.

He smiled and drew her closer. "Is this what I get after you almost peeled off my skin with your teeth."

"You deserved it," she replied, her voice already dropping low as he kissed her neck while his hands did justice to her zipper.

"This new perfume of yours is driving me crazy," he moaned. "I love you. Everything about you always drives me insane."

"I really wish I could hate you but I just can't." she whispered and kicked off her shoes.

"I'm sorry but everybody knows I don't take orders that much." he replied.

"Mmmhhhh," she murmured.

"I like to be in control." he said and lifted her off her feet.

Meanwhile, Shade in her office, looked on dreamily with her phone in her hand. Daniel had texted her just like he promised he would do before the plane takes off.

"I love you more baby. Kisses." she texted back.

"Mrs Daniel," a colleague of hers called, interrupting her fantastic thoughts.

"Chiamaka." she called, laughing.

"At your service ma'm."

"Ouch! I'm the one at your service madam." Shade replied, hugging her.

"Nop, I am."

"But you're older than me."

"With two months," she answered. "we Igbos don't joke with our wives especially beautiful ones like you."

"You are joking, right?" Shade laughed at her facial
expression. Chiamaka was light skinned and tall, they were given their appointment letters the same day and immediately bonded when they realized they graduated from the same Secondary school. Back then, they didn't know each other because Shade was one class ahead.

"I wasn't joking. I just came to collect the things you got for me from Paris."

"I thought as much. They're in the car." Shade answered.

"Did you just say car or cab?"

Shade gave her a puzzled look. "I said car."

She smacked her forehead. "Oh! Sorry, I almost forgot who your husband is. Congratulations dear."

The ringing of the intercom beside Shade interrupted."Thanks Chi. Let's talk more over lunch. Duty calls."

"Yeah, but as usual, the bill is on you."

"You really are an Igbo girl." Shade teased.

"Compliment accepted. I better run back to my duty post. These customers are suffocating."

Shade laughed. Chiamaka always did her work meticulously but always complains even when there's nothing to complain about.

Meanwhile, in Newman Hospital Lugbe, the doctor and his team comprising of six nurses worked tirelessly to save Daniel's life.

They already succeeded in extracting the bullets, luckily the bullet didn't hit a major blood vessel as the shooter intended it to. Though it narrowly missed his right auricle but it didn't do any major damage.

At Oledo street, the lady and her lover had just finished tumbling the bed and scattering the sheets for the sixth time in a row__blame it on adulterated Viagra.

"That was hot!" she muttered, breathlessly.

"And we're not even finished." he grunted.

"I need to go back to the hospital, I will be back later in the evening." she said and stepped down from the bed.

"But we are not finished yet." he protested like a spoilt brat.

"No but for now. You know you won't be satisfied even if I stay till evening." she countered, gatheringher discarded clothes.

He took a sip from the bottle of alcohol by his side and grinned. "You and I know I'm not a one minute man."

"Hundred hours man." she dug into her purse and took out 3 one thousand naira notes. "take this for your dinner."

"Baby oku'm," he flattered and collected the naira notes.

"I said dinner not cigarettes and alcohol." she warned.
"I know honey. Man gaz to wack sometimes." he replied in pidgin.

"Thank God say you know. Till evening." she kissed him goodbye and hurried out tucking in her blouse into the very short tummy skirt that showed off her 'fat filled' and not-so-stretch-mark-free thighs.

She cussed as she walked, she had once again lost track of time. She had only intended to spend less than thirty minutes there but she ended up spending two hours.

It wasn't unusual for her to loose track of time whenever she was with him. Her one time best friend once called her a nymphomaniac during one of their heated argument, she didn't deny the title neither did she get angry over it rather she was proud of it__really proud. To her the title doesn't come easily, it portrays power, strength, youthfulness and above all it commands respect. She liked what she was, enjoyed it and was proud of it. Which was why she was still with him despite the differences in their characters and everything in general---well, almost everything. The guy was a pro in the bedroom section and he never failed to deliver--never! Not even when he was down with malaria.

She quickly boarded a cab while cussing and hissing angrily like it was somebody's fault that she lost track of time.

"See your money abeg, I dey hurry." she alighted and threw the money at the taxi driver like they were enemies.

She adjusted her clothes and probably her temper before walking into the hospital.

The nurse at the reception recognized her as son as she sighted. "Miss, congratulations, the surgery was successful."

She opened her mouth and placed her hand on her chest. "Thank you so much, lord."

The nurse smiled at her and continued with her work.
"Can I go in?"

The nurse looked at her, thoughtfully for awhile before nodding affirmatively, "but he's not awake now," she warned before burying her face in the file once more.
She nodded excitedly like an agama lizard and hurried off but in no time she returned to the reception, in her excitement she had forgotten to ask for his room number.

"Nurse?"

"I knew you would come back, he's in room 214. Just by the left, just walk towards that direction," she pointed out. "take the left turn and you will find room 214, it's not hard to locate."

"Thanks Nurse."

"You're welcome."

She followed the nurse's directive and in no time she reached room 214, from the door she could see Daniel lying peacefully like a new born baby without worries.
She smiled and walked in calmly, at least now she can do what she's been dying to do since time immemorial.

"What's up baby?" she asked, placing a hand on his chest. "I know you missed me, well the feeling is mutual cuz I missed you also, much more than you can think of."

Her eyes went to the heart monitor beeping by his headside, "not exactly how I wanted us to meet." she said with a feigned sober expression. "I love you cutie." with that she planted a kiss on his lips and proceeded to sit beside him on the bed. "Gosh, I can't believe I'm alone with you in a room. It feels like I finally have you to myself, I trust, it won't be long before you become all mine."

Another kiss on his forehead followed.

She stood up and danced around the room, like a possessed being showing off it ballet skills. "Dan, you're mine, you're mine now." she murmured still dancing around and smiling heartily.

She danced back to the bedside, laid beside him and wrapped her arms around him.

"Finally" she said, breathlessly.

Please I will reply the comments tomorrow. Thank you to you all for the encouragement. Love ya. kiss

To all the ghostreaders, I salute also. wink love you all too

CHAPTER FIVE

Shade paced around the room, with 'worry' written all over her face. Daniel had promised to call her when he gets to his destination but it was past 9 and he still hadn't called.

She tried to reach him several times but all her efforts proved futile.

Just when she made to retire to the bedroom, a knock sounded on the door. She walked to the door and opened it quietly.

"You?" She asked visibly angry.

"Yes, me." he replied smiling sheepishly.

"It's late." she said, her gaze totally fixed on the wall clock.

"I know and I'm so sorry, I've been trying to reach Daniel but he's not picking up, so I decided to come look for him before I return home and finally call it a day. Is he in?" he enquired, with the most innocent expression that one could possibly imagine.

"He didn't tell you he was travelling?" Shade asked, amazed.

He widened his eyes in shock. "No, he didn't. When did he travel and where did he travel to?"

"Dubai and he travelled this morning." she replied, still looking at him in disgust. "Why all these questions even?"

"I hope he reached safely?"

She hissed, "Is there any reason why he shouldn't reach safely?"

"Hey, I mean no harm." he said, maintaining his cool smile.

One part of him wished he could just crush her with his bare hands while the other wished she could just be a little bit nicer to him at least, it would benefit both of them.

He of all people, she had absolutely no reason to hate him, everyone loves him. Most women love him, heck, all the women he's ever known all loved him especially his baby mamas, they all clustered and clamoured around him, each wishing he would one day pop the question "Will you marry me?" to her. With that knowledge and his promise to himself never to settle down with any of them, if and whenever he wanted to settle down, he made them warm his bed almost on daily basis, Atleast the money he would have spent on prostitutes that day, he would give them for their upkeep and that of their kids at the same time promising them heaven on earth.

If he had actually wanted to settle down, he would have long settled down with Miranda's mom, she was his first love but she had hurt him, badly. All women do is hurt men, that's what they were all created for; procreation and hurting men.

"What are you thinking about?" Shade asked, feeling irritated.

How could he just just come to her house at that time of the night not just that, he stood there staring at nothing in particular like a confused puppy.

"Just wondering why Daniel is being so distant this days, we used to be so close, just like 5 & 6." he said quietly.

"He got married, that's what happened, you should also do the same." Shade threw at him.

His expression softened, "I really don't know why you don't like me. I'm sorry if I have ever wronged you or done anything that would make you hate me."

His apology shocked Shade "I don't know why you're being nice to me all of a sudden," she started softly "but...

"No but, I've always been a nice person. You just don't know."

"Story!" she replied, abruptly.

"I've wondered and I'm still wondering why you would hate me without actually knowing me, " he said dryly.

"Your husband is my only friend and my best friend."

"Just few days ago, you were shouting at your best friend." she replied, laying emphasize on 'best friend'
"for no particular reason, you just kept on shouting like a mad goat."

The insult hit him and he sighed "That? He didn't tell you?" he asked tightly.

"No." she replied with interest.

"He knew he was at fault, I'm sure that's why he didn't tell you." his voice cracked.

"What did he do?"

He stayed silent for a moment, probably thinking. "Can we at least go inside?"

She nodded and made way for him to go in but not before staring deeply into his eyes with a deep frown, she didn't like the guy a bit.

They got in and she nodded at him to sit, he did and she went over and sat directly opposite him, without offering him anything to take, not even water, after all, he was an uninvited guest.

Alex heaved silently, he needed to convince her that he never meant any harm, that he had always been a nice person just that she failed to notice. He knew he was up for a very difficult task, her expression like that of a wounded lioness about to pounce on the next available victim spoke volume.

He adjusted his shirt and started, "Daniel and I did a business with some white men, like two years ago and up till today, I'm still waiting for my own share of the profit," he murmured, praying inwardly that he convinced her with those words.

He couldn't possibly afford not to convince her, he needed her to start seeing him as a friend rather than a foe that shouldn't be allowed any where near her dwelling place.

"What happened to your own share of the profit?" she finally asked after keeping mute for some seconds, she knew she asked a question with an obvious answer but she just didn't want to conclude at least not yet.

"Daniel, your husband is still with it." he breathed savagely "Your husband is still with my 8.5 million naira and that was why I was upset the other day." he explained "I'm sorry if that gave you a wrong impression of me."

A gasp escaped Shade. Though she saw it coming but the reaction still came naturally. "I don't believe you." she hesitated "My husband can't do such a horrible thing."

With a groan, Alex stood up and walked to where she sat. "I knew you won't believe me but it's okay, I understand it's your duty as a wife to love and trust your husband."

The whole thing was proving more difficult than he had anticipated but nevertheless, he didn't relent, he was more than determined to make her trust him...completely!

He sat next to her and went on and on about his different businesses with Daniel and how Daniel has been the one taking all the profit without sharing it with him.

After few minutes, when he was sure that he had convinced her, if not fully convinced at least he had filled her heads with words that would make her think twice about her husband.

From his experience, he noticed one similar thing in all the women he had been with, they were way too trusting, they trust too easily, just like how easily they hurt men.

Convinced that he had done a wonderful job, he stood up to leave.

"Are you being sincere about all you just said?" Shade asked.

Daniel has a lot to answer to when he gets back, she thought he was different!

"More than sincere," he murmured. "You can ask him yourself or more still, observe things yourself. Why do you think he never told you anything about the argument we had the other day? That's because he can't possibly open his mouth to tell his way too trusting wife that he's been cheating his friend. He doesn't want to taint the perfect image you have of him."

"But..." Shade made to speak but no coherent words came. The revelation was too shocking for her. Her system hadn't yet absorbed the information. She just couldn't believe that her Mr. Perfect could wrong anybody but Alex, his best friend had just proved her wrong. Initially, she didn't want to believe but he presented evidence to back up his claims, evidences that were way too clear, the audio recordings were all Daniel's voice. Confusion was written all over her. She once thought he could not even raise his hand to hurt a fly but the audio recordings that Alex brought with him proved everything wrong; he was even threatening his best friend in one of the recordings.

Suddenly, she didn't know the man she married anymore!

Alex congratulated himself, he had done a wonderful job. She believed him totally.
Women are way too easy to manipulate, if you know the tricks, he thought.

"Sweetie, no but, you should have taken your time to properly know him before marrying him." he said and his hand moved to her shoulder to console her.

"I should have...I can't believe he did all that." she cried out.

"Believe it or not, he did it and he's still doing it." he muttered. "I need to leave now. It's getting really late and my neighbourhood is not safe at night."

"It's okay. Thanks for stopping by, I'm so sorry I didn't offer you anything to take." she apologised, already regretting her action. She should have at least offered water to the man who opened her eyes to who she truly married.

"It's nothing. I shouldn't have told you all that. I'm sorry." he said, rubbing her shoulder slightly. "I just didn't like the hateful expression you usually wear whenever you see me."

"I'm sorry." she apologised, silently.

"It's okay. I will take my leave now." he said and stood up to leave. "I will stop by tomorrow after work to see how you are faring. Since my friend is not around, the least I can do is show love go his wife."

"That's very nice of you." She gave him a tight smile.
He bid her goodbye and off he went, congratulating himself for a mission well accomplished.

******
Daniel's eye fluttered open.

"Ahhhh." he moaned, trying to adjust to the bright light in the room.

"Where am I?" he murmured.

When his eyes fully adjusted to the brightness of the room, he looked to a side and noticed he was in a hospital room.

"Hospital? What am I doing here?" he asked inwardly.
The event of the day came flooding into his memory and that was when he noticed a familiar figure sitting at the other side of the room with tears in her eyes.

"Daniel, thank God you're awake." She muttered.

He watched her with anger written all over him.
"Dan, how are you doing?" she asked, concerned.

"What are you doing here?" he questioned.

Before him stood the woman that once shattered his whole world, he likened what she did to him to a man who used to live in a gigantic glass castle until one day, a woman cracked the glass and the fragile thing came crashing on the man's head and ruining him totally
"Daniel, I'm sorry. It was the work of the devil." she said, tearily.

Sorry? What was she sorry for? For shattering his world or his heart? Or both?

He had already vowed never to forgive her even in his next world. She had wronged his whole being and now she had the gut to stand before him and blab about being sorry.

"Daniel, look at me please. I'm sorry for everything, I've repented and I'm here to ask for your forgiveness. I know you're married and we can never be together again but please forgive me, all I need now is your forgiveness."

She went down on her knees and began to cry.
Daniel hissed and made to turn but the state of his body made him unable to turn away from her and he winced in pain.

She came rushing to his side.

"Get your filthy hands off me." he barked at her.

"I'm sor...I'm sorry." she apologised and dropped her hands by her side. "Daniel, please forgive me, forgiveness is just what I want."

"Amanda, please leave." he barked again.

"Dan..."

"Leave and don't come back. I don't want to ever see you again. You're a blood sucking demons. A creature from hell. How could I have ever gotten involved with someone like you? he asked.

...Ahhhh" he winced as he felt the pain from the two spot were he had been shot. But that wasn't the primary thing on his mind, he needed to give this woman his own piece of mind. Few years back, he was too hurt to even talk but now despite the pain and the condition he was in, he won't let her go without letting her know how disgusting he found her. "You're nothing but a cheap harlot. No man, no matter how evil he is deserves to be involved with a woman like you. I must have been an assassin in my previous life to have ever met you in this life." he ranted.

"Dan, I know I'm the worst person on the face of this earth but I'm sorry, please forgive me."

He ignored her and stretched his hand to reach for his phone in his pocket only to notice that he was no longer wearing the clothes he wore to the airport and his phone was nowhere to be found.

"Do you want to call your wife? It's late."

"Who asked for your opinion? It's not your business to tell me if it's late or not." Daniel replied.

He rested his nerves wondering how he would reach his wife and tell her that that he's safe, that she shouldn't worry about him. He wondered if she'd heard about the incident at all. He didn't need anyone to tell him that she would be really worried now, whether she's heard the about it or not. Shade was so fragile and he liked that about her. He closed his eyes. "If only I can get a phone now so I can speak to her." he said inwardly.

"If you're that worried about her, you can use my phone."

Amanda's voice so close, made him open his eyes. He saw her outstretched arm with her phone hanging loosely in her hands.

"I don't need your phone. You harlot!"

"You have no option Dan, your phone is nowhere to be found and no other person will enter this room till tomorrow morning. The nurse, came to check on you for the last time like 30 minutes ago." She explained.
What she said, made sense to him. "Give me." he looked at her angrily and then snatched the phone from her hands.

Meanwhile, Shade sat in the bedroom in deep thought. She was finding it difficult to believe all that Alex said. I mean, she found Daniel too perfect to commit such atrocities but then again, the audio recordings that Alex had played to her hearing solidly backed up his claims.

"Oh God, who on earth did I marry?"

Looking at him, one wouldn't even imagine that he could hurt a fly. Even she too used to think the same until few minutes ago.

*****

"Switched off?" Daniel murmured and dialed the number for the fourth time like it would change anything.

"Daniel, stop trying. It won't change anything, her phone is switched off, try sending her a text message." she suggested.

"Thanks but I don't need you to tell me what to do."
He slowly typed a text message, stating clearly that she shouldn't worry, that he's safe.

He sent it and gave the phone back to the owner.
"Daniel, I knew you would be hungry when you wake up, so I brought something for you to eat." she said and brought out a flask from a bag on the floor.

"I'm not hungry." he said, but his stomach rumbled in protest.

*******
At Oledo Street, the two partners had just returned from a night out.

"...that club was fun tonight." he said referring to the club where they had just returned from.
Earlier on, they had gone out to celebrate their success.

"In no time, I would have Daniel crawling at my feet." the lady replied, speaking on an entirely different topic.

"Can we not talk about that now?" her partner replied, frowning.

"Dan is our only route to success. If our plans work perfectly well, in no time we would be travelling round the whole world in our private jet." she said and winked at him. "We would have the world at our feet."

"I know." he replied knowingly "but you don't have to keep mentioning him whenever we are together."

"Are you jealous already?" she asked, smiling.

He walked to her and held her by the waist "Jealous?"
No way, not when I know you're mine. Forever!"

A husky laughter escaped her.

"I like your confidence." she said teasily and tugged at his belt. "Let's make good use of this cool weather for two."

"You know that no man can treat you better than I do, right?" he asked, feeling himself.

"I know sweetheart."

She needed to get all the tension out of her system. There was so much on her mind and so many things to accomplish. She had been lucky enough to leave the hospital today without being caught. She needed to restrategize and what other best way to prepare to restrategize other than loosening up her nerves a bit?
Luck was definitely on her side that evening; she had just gone to the hospital's canteen to get soft drinks for herself when she saw Amanda coming into the hospital. She was so lucky that she brought her handbag with her, if she had left it in Daniel's hospital room it would have been disastrous and her plans would have failed woefully even before it started.

********
"How did you find out?" Daniel asked, dropping the peel of the last banana into the wastebin.

"IDV evening news." she answered, like she's been expecting the question.

"News?" he asked, just to be sure he heard right.

"Yes."

"Oh!" he exclaimed. It occurred to him that Shade wouldn't tune in to a news station even if it was the last thing on earth, she wasn't a fan of it, simply put she hated it.

If she was a fan of news stations, she would have long came running to the hospital.

"Daniel, I'm still apologizing. I'm sorry."

Amanda chewed on her lower lips, feeling guilty for how she had treated him those years, feeling guilty for all her past mistakes, she still couldn't put a hand to what came over her but what she knew for sure was that she wanted...no...needed; Daniel's forgiveness.

"Just because I ate what you brought, doesn't give you the avenue to start blabbing in my presence.' Daniel retorted. Amanda knew just the right buttons to press to get him to do anything except forgiving her. She had brought his favourite fruit with her and he was terribly hungry and had no choice but to eat it.

She stood beside him, all confidence draining from her. She knew that Daniel wouldn't forgive her easily, not even for all the jolly good times they've had in the past. She had terribly wronged him. "Those mistakes I made, I can't undo them, but please find it in your heart to forgive. I'm so sorry Dan." she pleaded softly.

Anger vibrated through Daniel. This woman had wronged him, hurt him badly and even mocked him. She had absolutely no right to stand before him much less to stand and talk about forgiveness!

"If you really need my forgiveness, just do one thing." Daniel said, through clenched teeth.

Hesitating fractionally, Amanda asked. "What?"

"Get the hell out of her and never come back!" he barked as pain soared through him.

....And who is Kimberlywest?
Another wannabe writer or what??

The audacity in which she start the story.. hitting the right nerve with devastating accuracy made me conclude that we are not dealing with an amateur writer here or one of those first timer learning the rope LIT 101.

We are actually dealing with one who had been in the game for a while. To confirm my theory,I had to check her out and indeed she has a story to her name.

A story I have never read nor came across.

However,i intend to check that story out soon...for the plot here, the use and choice of words, the creative aspect of this very story proves beyond reasonable doubt that this is gonna be something awesomely beautiful, inspiring alluring and above all educative teaching a serious lesson and the first story..who knows, might be a little more above ordinary in the interesting aspect of it.

Well,I am not concluding yet...
Everything so far sounds and is still pointing and screaming ..."this one is capable "...." this one is the real deal"..."this one is something special" so I intend to critical follow this story and see where I could encourage vehemently or kick her ass.

Chucking...

Lady Kimberlywest....You are undoubtedly creating something special here so far and your efforts is highly appreciated and acknowledged.

Maintain the standard...
Give us some reasons why we won't get tired of your stories a thousand times.

All I can say so far is,"more critical description of the environment and event is needed".

Thanks you for entertaining freely!
