The only war benin would have had with the oyo empire was the war benin aided ekiti as a tributary under itself to wage war against the egba people which the ekiti won

Politically, Alaafin The Oba of Oyo, and The Obas of Benin I can say are neck and neck.
So they are Equal in my opinion.

Reason being that Oyo exerted political influence over about 75% of Yorubaland and conquered non yoruba territories in Bariba, Nupe, Fon, Egun, and Aja. Even fought the Ashantis by leading a coalition between themselves and the Akyem in Ghana.
Benin exerted political influence over the remaining 25% of Yorubaland, mostly in Ondo (Owo, Ondo town, Akure, Ikales etc), Ekiti, Lagos Island and the jekris (Itsekiri) and conquered non Edo territories in Anioma and where else.... maybe Urhobo and Isoko if we don't consider them as Edo based on linguistics.

Symbolically and Spiritually though, Ooni is above both. Though Ife never proved itself Militarily, it was more like a Vatican of sorts. Its power lay in its symbolism and mysticism.

Benin never saw oyo as an empire or brothers i believe it only had to take time before the benins would have enterd the whole of yoruba state untill the britsh came to stop them in 1897. oyo.was an empire that never fought any renowed war the inky war they fought they lost and the ines win they struggled to win.
