Exactly my worry.
I just love the way they shower me with dividends twice every year. grin
You cant go wrong with a stock, paying 10% yield and above.Lets just keep enjoying the dividend my brother until the investing public discovers the goldmine in it,we can then sell it to them at 9+,then come back later or move the funds into more juicy terrain

There are no free lunches in the financial markets. How can there not be risk of exchange rate volatility? Those yield are rewards for risks, so higher yields comes with higher risks. There is however value if you can speculate the future direction of exchange rates and then trade in line with your expectation.

See the first two snapshots below. The first is the performance of the cedi against the dollar while the second is the performance of the naira against the dollar. Both currencies lost ground against the dollar in the last 5 years but the naira lost more, the third snapshot proves this point - you need less cedi today to get a naira compared to 5 years ago. If you had invested in Ghana 5 years ago you would have earned those yield plus exchange rate gain, by now, you would have l owo bi Adnuga.

I do not expect going to Ghana now to be a good bet because I think the naira would strengthen in the next 36 months. Aliko has started producing fertilizer and refining of petroleum products will start soon, max next year. Even if he doesn’t export to earn FX, our demand for FX will be down by about 33%(not sure of this figure and can confirm atm) as that is what the cbn uses to fund fuel imports.

For me, any bet against naira assets with a horizon of 36+ months will not payoff.

Good analysis. here my part.

Anything dat will make ghana devalue/nigeria will also follow suit. it a cycle.

Why r u worried abt devaluation ? when stock will b cheaper? like if devaluation occur d stock market will suffer more ,u barely av nothing to lose except inflation in fixd income.

As for me am even betting against d naira for long time. everyone shouting dangote refinery dangote is not even a fool to use nigeria bank after all the foreign loans. most refinery dont sales oil in local currency

the only advantage is no more subsidy fraud since we wount import oil again...

but can you bet that oil price will stay above 65$ till the next 2-3yrs? if the price drop below 40$ we will devalue.

So you think policitians/CBN/President /NNPC will let the 33% u talk abt have effect to the reserve ? dey will steal it.pension fraud/susbidy fraud/ amcom fraud/ allocation fraud..

What happened to the 44 items band by cbn gorv...did naira get stronger ?

if i see 15% for t.bill.jaapaa.

Thanks for this inspiring post Mr. Gentlesomebody. God bless you.
I actually wanted to say something similar but not as detailed as this sometimes ago when one nairalander, Hungerbad (RIP) serving in the US Army died.... but I refrained from doing so on second thought.
A thread or even two threads were opened for him and, my people, you need to read the testimonies of Nairalanders in that thread.
I was really touched by the comments on how he helped and assisted a lot here. Just like Lydia in the Bible.
Let's try our best to be a giver and 'invest' in the things of God, the needy and the less privileged if its in our capacity to do so. This is a great service to God and humanity and the Good Lord will not forget our labour of love in Jesus name.

Oh... don't mention my dear !!

I was around idiroko border axis and the air was filled with implications of removal of ban on tokumbo vehicles............my thoughts are that once the ban is lifted.........I would accumulate petroleum marketing stocks as they will be the highest beneficiaries of cheap vehicular imports..........I also see the lifting of this ban as a strategic move to the commissioning of dangote refinery

Interesting news from Ghana.
Ghana is now the the highest gold producer in the Africa
https://m.fin24.com/Economy/sa-loses-african-gold-crown-to-ghana-20190610-2

Ghana could be the 4th largest oil producer by 2020

https://www.reuters.com/article/ghana-oil/ghana-could-be-africas-number-four-oil-producer-by-2020-report-idUSL8N1BX52H

With moderate and manageable population, the economy of Ghana is set to explode in the next decade.
I think, the government of that country has a road map and it appears they understood what they are doing.
You can imagine the foreign inflows that will oversubscribe the TB and bond issue by the central bank of Ghana (BOG) Your guess is as good, if not better than mine.
I can see Nigeria investment firms getting thousands of requests in the coming days on offshore investments.
We are playing investme games with the smartest people in the world. I will not be surprised if the Power to be block this move.,
Same way the present government made it difficult for people to benefit from the storage of Wealth by overdefending the Naira with over $48 billion in one year.
Buhari or EMEFIELE like it or not, the US $ remains a storage of wealth. Swapping Naira for yuan will only spell a doom for the Naira.
You do the right thing, Investors will flock to your country.
The transfer of wealth is grossly retarded under Buhari regime.

There’s no devaluation oo but our currency is suffering against all major currencies $€£..
when I read here about how our foreign brothers with hard currency are trooping into Ghana, I went asking questions..cos I’m currently not in the country..
My 58 years old mom was the first to play me scores.. and since then I’ve been seeing 19,50% everywhere.. lolz grin grin if I go for 5 years ( at least by then buhari would be through with his next level)
Turns out the government “over” promised the people so they needed to borrow money to fulfill their promises lolz or get voted out.. they want to impress the people..
This made yields high.. plus stock market, GSE CI is down by 6% YTD so people prefer to lend to the government instead..

The main reason to me, is the promises they made in their budget..

Ok got you. Thanks for the explanation.

lol.....Oga boss 50% on a single stock might just be 8% on ur total asset. We're talkin of 20% on total asset. and also d interest can be re-invested netting 22% plus..

You nailed it Oga 333. This year, i made almost 50% on FCMB (cost price of 1.54 and SP of 2.25+) but on my overall portfolio, i made around 15% or less. The issue with those penny stocks is that, how much volume can you get without causing an unnecessary spike in their price. I remembered how long it took me sef to get out because sometimes the total bids available is even less than the volumes in your portfolio so you had to be selling in tranches.

Investing in Ghana TB as part of diversification is a good idea.
I just have a strong believe that the NSE will explode. When
No one can say.
It could happen unannounced
It could get worse
NSE is positioned to reward patient investors. I can see the bourse minting many Multi Millionaires in the nearest future.
Just keep accumulating and diversity off shore and on shore.
The worst bubu can do is to constrict the economy for another 1 to 2 yrs... We are ready.

I agree with you.. nse will soon become the talk of town.. no doubt but when it will happen is the main koko..
Imagine caverton that I bought and received haircut on, their registrar have refused to pay me my dividend.. this among so many things killing nse.. you’ll see a stock with good results and juicy dividend fall like it drank fallingmacine ..
People are tired with all these registrars and their bullS***t hence selling off good stock before qualify date.

Me, I’m just looking at that 5 years T-bill because I can gather the interest and come back and invest it in nse in 3 years time.. the GOG Bond, they pay you your interest every 6 months and hold the Capital till the 5 years is complete..
Very interesting..
I don’t know if they do this in Nigeria T-bills..

I’m not saying all these to encourage any sell off oo.. I just want to share it here so those interested can benefit..

Interestingly, the BOG TB is available for people of all nationalities. I have been researching on it.
It was dt simplified that people of Ghana can buy it via cell phone network providers. I am still researching on it, in the process, waiting for a response from GT bank Ghana on the possibility of buying it via them. I will post the update here. However, the available yields on line is 14 to 17. 9%

I am also in touch with this company. They provide answers on so many FAQ on GOG TB. They also mentioned that foreign nationalities and non residents are qualified.
