Problem is, the job security at my place of work is not that encouraging. I have older colleagues who have been in the company for 8 to 15 years, I've also, within my short period (less than a year now) seen about 5 workers sacked, it's a place where any thing can happen at any time.

So, should I invest this 400k in renting and furnishing an apartment with the constant uncertainty hovering over the job,and no side income yet, or should I continue staying with my parents while I invest the money in a side business which I don't know how it'll fare...

Now, frankly speaking, I'm not cut out for business, it's not my forte at all, so starting any at all comes with great risk but I still feel the need for another source of income.

On the flip side, Staying with my parents is not even as economical as most would think. Ever since I got the job, parents no dey gree say them get money again. All the bills are on me.

I'm just confused.

Why not get a land and start your own building? Tell your dad about the plan. Instead of wasting money renting an accommodation. We can get you a genuine plot of land in Ifo, Ogun state, at the rate of 350k. Then you can start your building even if it is a 3 bedroom flat.

Guy to be frank, you are a good economist if you really mean you saved 400k in less than a year and from a salary not up to 100k monthly. I give you kudos, considering the state of the economy of the country. I advise you stay more with ur people, save more money close to 2mil and most importantly, explore a business that is easy to operate and invest in it. It z true that you said you don't have a passion in that area, but these days, nothing pays like being an entrepreneur. Don't forget ur job doesn't have security.

My broda I advice you to leave ur parents place and find an apartment you can afford, I am from anambra(onitsha to be precise) with the same age bracket and I was faced with this kind of predicament. The truth is u can survive leaving alone but fear of not being able to pay for rent is what is drawing u back from taking a bolder step. Staying alone will give u more clarity and determination to push forward, knowing that u have a bill to pay makes u to dare for more. Don't give in to this fear. Nothing grows in ur comfort zone

Just stumbled on your thread and think I should give you my perspective. I was in your position sometime ago.

The responses were spot on. I mean considering your earning capacity.

It's a good thing that you have developed a savings culture. Kudos to you. Maintain that. It will definitely help in the future.

However your main goal should be how to increase your earnings maybe by starting something by the side , learning a new skill that can earn you money or getting a job that pays better. See, there is a limit to how much you can currently save.

Don't abandon the idea of leaving (you can postpone till you increase your earnings) and don't wait till you are ready for marriage. The earlier responses considered only the cost leaving out the value. Living independently comes with its own benefits also.

I get your parents angle. They are just trying to protect you. That's what parents do. But soon , they might not be so cool with that if they start seeing your age mates getting married and living in their own houses (Considering your age). That's when the real pressure will come.

Waiting till marriage is not advisable cos marriage comes with its own cost and responsibilities.

My advice is increase your income as soon as possible and start building your life.

There is no economic logic in your leaving to rent Your own because your parents also rent which would mean double rental fees in the same proximity doesn't make any economic sense,it would have been better if they have owned the place,stay and save more till your can, build a place for the family.

In my opinion I see now, shame in staying with your parents for as long as, u would have loved, that's why they were your parents in the first instance as, long as u are not a liability,i have a 52 friend who worked for AT&T for decades he, stayed with his mom till she passed some few months ago,now he is retired, single, never married, his credit score is in the sky he could buy a condo with a, snap of his finger plus his retirement benefits in the picture, he could never go wrong, why did he choose to stay because he had to be, there for his aged mom, even though he could afford a senior home for here, stay, there because u need to be there for your parents at least.

There's another I observe from people like you.

From the OP'S post, there's much love between him and his parents.

I observe that 90% of people that usually advice people to hastily run out of the parents house are people from broken homes, polygamous family, barrack-like family (6-10) children in small apartment.

Children from united family, 2-3 children will hardly run out of their parent's house hastily.

If I happen to work in the town my parent reside I'll live with my parent and save to build my own house because:

I love my parents and wouldn't want to stay far away from them if I have the opportunity.

I have my own room for my privacy.
